2023.03.20 22:11 Gloomy_Athlete8586 IT or Skilled Labor?

So I currently work as a level 1 tech and I'm in college for CS, nothing big just a 2 year associates being paid for with financial aid. I dropped out of high school at 16 and went to work as a framer building apartments. I got tired of all the traveling and realized that life at home doesn't stop just because I'm not around and after one of my good friends passed, I came back home and pursued IT at 20. First step ws my GED which I got in like 2 weeks and then placement tests for college, now that I'm in it and realizing what office work is like. I'm starting to 2nd guess if I'm cut out for being in an office my whole life. I love construction and I love IT but I'm having trouble deciding which one is right for me. Having a 10th grade math comprehension really set me back in college algebra so I dropped the class to save my GPA for the quarter but I'm excelling in my computer classes. I don't know what I'm meant for, there's no particular direction I'm going so I'm starting to feel a little lost. I know that reddit cannot decide this for me but what advice do you guys have to help me decide what I'm meant to do? I make shit for pay at this job compared to what I made in construction and my boss offered me a lot to come back, what I make in 2 weeks at my tech job id make in 3 days in construction so it's pretty tempting. TIA

2023.03.20 22:11 autotldr Trump’s Lawyers Seem Pretty Panicked He’s Going to be Indicted in Georgia Too

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 39%. (I'm a bot)
Donald Trump spent the weekend having a meltdown about the prospect of being indicted by Manhattan prosecutors over his 2016 hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.
In a court filing, attorneys for Trump demanded the final report from the Fulton County special grand jury that investigated Trump and his allies' attempt to overthrow the election be suppressed, claiming that the "Results of the investigation cannot be relied upon and must be suppressed given the constitutional violations." In addition to arguing that Robert C.I. McBurney, the supervising judge in the case, "Failed to protect the most basic procedural and substantive constitutional rights of all individuals discussed," Trump's lawyers also claimed that Fulton County district attorney Fani Willis engaged in "Instances of forensic misconduct and improper extrajudicial activity," and should be removed from the case.
It's not hard to see why Team Trump is going to the ends of the earth to destroy the report generated by the special grand jury.
As for its recommendations re: which individuals should be charged, jury forewoman Emily Kohrs told The New York Times last month it was "Not a short list," adding of whether or not Trump was on it: "You're not going to be shocked. It's not rocket science." Speaking to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, another juror said of the group's report: "A lot's gonna come out sooner or late. And it's gonna be massive. It's gonna be massive."
Legal experts told the Times they doubt her comments would have an impact on the case, noting that the special grand jury does not actually issue indictments, a job that would be left to a regular grand jury.
As for Willis, it's not really at all surprising that Trump's lawyers want her booted from the case, given that she appears prepared to actually hold the ex-president and his pals accountable for their actions.

2023.03.20 21:58 AuthenticFish PM Subgenres

Good afternoon. I will be transitioning out of the military in two years, I'll be 42 at that time. I have my PMP and want to pursue a PM career, but I am not sure in what industry. I see a lot of tech and construction PM jobs, but I am curious about what else is out there. Is there another industry that has an abundance of PM jobs? Are there a lot of remote PM jobs? Is there anything else I can do over the next two years to set me apart when looking for my next PM opportunity? I've been networking in my current industry (aviation) for when I start the transition, but I want to look for some additional insight. Thanks!

2023.03.20 21:55 autotldr GOP threatens to defund the prosecutor as Trump indictment looms

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 80%. (I'm a bot)
WASHINGTON - Republicans' defense of former President Donald Trump has taken a surprising twist: They're threatening to defund the prosecutor.
For years, Trump and fellow GOP candidates have pilloried progressive Democrats for promoting a "Defund the police" movement that seeks to shift funds away from traditional law enforcement and toward community services aimed at reducing crime.
Still, Michael Steele, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee who has become a vocal critic of his party, said GOP lawmakers would be outraged if Democrats wanted to investigate federal funding for a local prosecutor based on an ongoing case.
Since Trump announced Saturday - without apparent evidence - that he was likely to be indicted Tuesday, he and other Republicans have targeted the support Soros-backed entities have given to progressive candidates for elected prosecutor jobs.
An aide to McCarthy provided a copy of House Republicans' 2022 "Commitment to America" agenda in response to a question about the difference between defunding the police and defunding a prosecutor.
Turning the argument on its head, Republicans are now applying pressure to get a prosecutor to avoid indicting Trump.

2023.03.20 21:41 autotldr Amazon to lay off 9,000 more workers.

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 58%. (I'm a bot)
Amazon is cutting 9,000 more jobs, CEO Andy Jassy announced Monday in a memo to staff.
The latest cuts come after the company announced earlier this year that it was eliminating some 18,000 positions as part of a major cost-cutting bid at the e-commerce giant.
"This was a difficult decision, but one that we think is best for the company long term," Jassy wrote in the memo.
"Some may ask why we didn't announce these role reductions with the ones we announced a couple months ago," Jassy added.
Amazon, like a number of other Big Tech companies, also rapidly grew its headcount during the early days of the pandemic.
Jassy wrote on Monday that the hiring "Made sense given what was happening in our businesses and the economy as a whole."

All we can say is, “Good call!”

Best Overall 30-06 Ammo for Deer Hunting

Barnes VOR-TX 150 Grain TTSX

Specs

Pros

Cons

Why We Chose It

The best deer hunting rounds for the 30-06 are affordable, in stock, and have additional features that control expansion and adequately maximize penetration. The 150-grain Barnes TTSX meets all our standards, and it’s something we can recommend to everyone.
Barnes takes extraordinary measures to produce insanely high-quality ammo, and the TTSX line is no exception. The polymer tip makes the TTSX more aerodynamic, raising the ballistic coefficient and helping the bullet penetrate before expanding.
The bullet’s terminal performance is nothing short of superb. The 150-grain bullet penetrates deep and expands to nearly double its original diameter (assuming impact occurs between 1,800 and 3,000 fps). The brilliant design and all-copper composite make an extremely effective wound cavity. All you need to worry about is shot placement!
In addition to being a slam dunk for deer season, we love this round for its versatility. Not only can the Barnes 150 gr TTSX easily take down a deer at 500 yards with proper shot placement, but it can also be used for larger game animals like black bears, elk, and moose.
If you want an efficient round that’s pretty easy to find, pick up a box of the Barnes 150 gr TTSX. The high ballistic coefficient, superior Barnes quality, and flat trajectory make it well worth a few dollars per round.

Honorable Mention

Nosler Trophy Grade 150 Grain Nosler Partition - Another excellent round you should grab for deer hunting is Nosler Partition ammo for the 30-06. The Nosler Partition bullet has two components separated by a partition, the front for penetration/expansion and the back for weight retention. Of course, if you need a round for hunting large animals, consider the Nosler 150 grain Accubond. However, we found Nosler Partition ammo easier to find in stock.

Best 30-06 Ammo for Deer Hunting - Runner Up

Remington CoreLokt 150 Grain Scirocco Bonded

Specs

Pros

Cons

Why We Chose It

Remington 150 Grain Scirocco Bonded ammo is an excellent round for hunters during deer season. It’s a hard-hitting bullet with a flatter trajectory than some other rounds and leaves an impressive wound channel.
Like the Barnes TTSX, Swift Scirocco Bonded bullets have nearly 100% weight retention to maximize penetration. The polymer tip is responsible for initiating expansion, but the electro-chemical bonding process is what keeps the lead core and copper jacket together to ensure deadly terminal performance.
You’ll get adequate expansion at velocities as low as 1,650 fps (around 500 yards). This gives you a little more distance than some of our other recommendations. It’s also slightly cheaper than the Barnes TTSX but still pricier than some other options on our top 5 list.
Not only does the Remington 150 gr Swift Scirocco Bonded bullet do amazing work on deer, but we also love it because you can ethically hunt elk, black bears, and moose too.

Best Budget 30-06 Ammo for Deer Hunting

Hornady American Whitetail 150 Grain SP

Specs

Pros

Cons

Why We Chose It

Hornady American Whitetail is a phenomenal choice if you’re looking for excellent factory ammo on a budget and you don’t have time to work on handloads. Easy on the wallet and effective on the hunt, this 150-grain cartridge offers phenomenal terminal performance and exceptional accuracy.
Hornady Whitetail is an extremely popular choice for avid hunters because it’s a high-quality round that deals a lot of damage to the deer and not your pocketbook. With Hornady’s patented InterLock® design, the lead core and jacket stay together on impact giving you high levels of penetration and expansion.
Hornady Whitetail utilizes a soft point bullet with a muzzle velocity of 2,910 fps that can accurately bag a deer within 400 yards (just over 1,800 fps) and still achieve the expansion necessary to bring down a trophy buck.
Although Hornady American Whitetail is soft on the wallet, the jacketed soft point bullet design is less effective at long range shots when compared to other offerings on our top 5 list. However, if you hunt in wooded areas like New England, the Midwest, and forests of the Pacific Northwest, then Hornady American Whitetail 150 gr SP ammo will offer more than enough range for deer season this fall.

Honorable Mention

Prvi Partisan 150 Grain SP: This is another excellent budget round that simply gets the job done. If you’re looking for an affordable deer hunting cartridge, Prvi Partisan is an excellent backup choice. It’s readily available and the soft pointed lead core will easily penetrate medium-sized game animals.

Best 30-06 Ammo for Deer - Fan Favorite

Winchester Power Point 165 Grain PSP

Specs

Pros

Cons

Why We Chose It

We love a good, tried and true 30-06 cartridge, and Winchester Power Point 165 grain fits that bill perfectly. This low-cost cartridge has a flat trajectory and packs more than enough wallop to take down any deer in your sights.
Winchester designed its Power Point bullets for accuracy and penetration. The soft lead core is encased in a copper jacket, so you’ll have the controlled expansion necessary to create a sufficient wound cavity and ethically take home your deer.
The Winchester Power Point was deadly accurate in our hands and expands perfectly between 3,000 and 1,800 feet per second. Assuming you keep your shots within 300 yards, you’ll bag a deer for less than $2/round without having to trek through the woods following blood trails.
However, while many hunters have taken down large creatures with the 165-grain Winchester Power Point, it’s a bit risky to use it for hunting bigger game (larger than 300 pounds). Shot placement and distance will play a significant role in your success.
If you want to ethically hunt deer, this round will work. But if you want to hunt larger game, try one of the other rounds on our list.

Honorable Mention

Federal Power-Shok 150 Grain - Another excellent round that works well on the medium-sized game, like whitetail deer and mule deer. It’s a traditional lead core soft-point bullet with no bells and whistles. If you’re looking for a low-cost conventional 30-06 ammo for deer hunting that simply gets the job done, then look no further than Federal Power-Shok.

Best 30-06 Ammo for Deer Hunting

Federal Fusion 180 gr FSP

Specs

Pros

Cons

Why We Chose It

If you’re looking for the first round developed specifically for deer hunters, then look no further than the Federal Fusion 180 gr FSP.
Utilizing a skived nose, the Federal Premium Fusion Soft Point is built for immediate and deadly expansion the moment it encounters soft tissue. This is perfect for thin-skinned game like whitetail and mule deer, where you want maximum penetration, weight retention, and a wide wound channel.
The copper jacket used on FSP rounds is electrochemically bound to the soft lead core. This makes for a perfectly uniform jacket that is incredibly accurate for a soft point round.
The massive 180 grain bullet really does a number on medium sized game, transferring the maximum amount of kinetic energy possible into that trophy whitetail that wandered in front of your tree stand.
Although the Federal Fusion is perfect for deer, it’s not the best choice for larger game like elk. However, if you want the original purpose-built deer round, then Federal Fusion 180 gr is a perfect choice to take out into the woods this fall.

Oh Deer! That’s a Wrap

Congratulations! You made it all the way to the end. No matter which of these factory loads you choose, you’ll be well armed to put Bambi in your freezer this deer season.
But since you made it this far, do you want to keep learning more about the 30-06 Springfield? We’ve shared a vast majority of our wisdom in the sections above but keep scrolling to take a gander at our 30-06 buyer’s guide.
Or if you’re ready to order a box from our list, click HERE to go back to the top.

Buyer’s Guide: What to Look for in 30-06 Hunting Ammo

The 30-06 Springfield is considered by many as the quintessential hunting round. It has served the US military through two World Wars and has been taking down deer, elk, and moose across North America for over 100 years.
It is the round that all other hunting cartridges are compared to. Often you’ll hear hunters make the comparison of, “Well is it any better than a 30-06?” Which tells you that the old warhorse has quite a long track record of putting game down humanely and efficiently.
As such, the 30-06 has seen a lot of work done on it to make it one of the best all-around hunting rounds on the market. With multiple bullet designs and grain weights, picking the best hunting load for your needs can be difficult for newer shooters or hunters.
But don’t worry! We are here to help you cut through all the hype and buzzwords to explain what you should be looking for in an excellent deer hunting round.
As experts in the field, we analyze a lot of hunting loads, from weight to bullet types and more. So, take some time and read through the following sections to learn more about choosing hunting ammo.

Deer Hunting & Weight Grains

Although the weight of the bullet affects numerous factors, including wind resistance, terminal performance, ballistics, and expansion, shot placement and knowing your rifle always prevail over the “best bullet weight.”
But, for those curious, how do you know what weight is best for hunting deer? Well, the answer to that question is highly subjective, and for good reason! You’ll have to consider distance, how your rifle handles the round, and what you’re shooting (deer, in this case).
The lighter the bullet, the more muzzle velocity, and therefore, the faster it will travel. This creates for a flatter shooting bullet that is more forgiving or ranging mistakes.
On the other hand, heavier bullets tend to travel slower but are more resistant to wind drift and pack more kinetic energy.
If you’re trying to shoot an elk at over 500 yards, you’re going to want something that hits a bit harder to make sure you have enough kinetic energy to ensure a clean kill. But if you’ve got a whitetail in your crosshairs at 400 yards or less, you don’t necessarily need a massive bullet to get the job done.
For whitetail deer, hogs, or pronghorn, the 150 gr and 165 gr bullets offer a happy compromise between stopping power, lower recoil, and a flatter trajectory.
However, do keep in mind that your next deer won’t ask you, “What grain weight is that TTSX bullet you just shot me with?” Because if you’re using premium expanding hunting ammo and can put the bullet inside the vitals, the deer won’t be asking you anything at all!

Types of Hunting Bullets

You’ve surely seen a lot of acronyms online and on ammo boxes. But what do they all mean?
Hunting is a lot different than competitive or long-range target shooting. The goal isn’t just to hit your target, but to put down your quarry quickly and humanely. The hunting ammunition you choose needs to keep working after the initial impact.
So, it’s important to put a little more thought into your hunting rifle cartridges. To put it simply, match-grade ammo won’t cut it.
For example, you don’t want to use FMJ (full metal jacket) ammo for hunting. It’s typically a lead core bullet that won’t expand.
To further complicate things, match-grade ammo is typically loaded with Boat-Tail Hollow Point (BTHP) bullets. Although hollow point bullets are typically used for self-defense handgun ammo, these rifle bullets are designed for extreme accuracy and NOT terminal expansion.
To help you sort things out, we made a list of some of the most common hunting bullet types deer hunters utilize and why they are effective.

SP (Soft Point)

You’ll see a few variations of SP rounds. From Soft Point to Pointed Soft Point and the beloved Jacketed Soft Points, all are perfectly suitable for hunting deer. But let’s break down the differences.
Of course, you’ll find soft point bullets are just that; they have a softer lead core than other bullet types. Unlike FMJs (full metal jackets) which have a dense lead core, soft points consist of a softer core with an exposed nose cavity allowing the bullet to expand easily. However, if a bullet expands too quickly, it will not penetrate, which leads us to jacketed soft points.
Like JHPs (jacketed hollow points), a JSP (jacketed soft point) is a jacketed round. Except, a small part of the lead core is still exposed. This design allows for both penetration and controlled expansion while also maintaining a high ballistic coefficient.
You will also see PSP, which stands for Pointed Soft Point. These bullets have the same overall design as soft points, except the pointed tips make them more aerodynamic and more accurate for longer range shots.

Polymer Tipped Bullets

These days, polymer tipped bullets are all the range for hunting ammo. The polymer tip not only provides a more aerodynamic bullet, but it also aids in expansion.
Bullets like the Barnes TTSX, Hornady SST, and Nosler Ballistic Tip utilize the tip to initiate bullet expansion. This creates a more uniform wound channel and puts down game more quickly and humanely.

Bonded Tip Bullets

A bonded tip bullet is one where the jacket is chemically fused to the lead core rather than pressed. The reason for this is better penetration. As per the Scirocco recommendation above, a bonded tip will hold together much better and control expansion. There are a variety of bonded tip bullets, they typically have a higher price tag, but they’re well worth the extra coin if you’re hunting or buying self-defense ammo.

Get to Know the 30-06

Before we leave you with nothing but a vast technical knowledge of the 30-06 (which we know you appreciate), let’s talk 30-06 fun facts.
To start, the 30-06 is a 30-caliber round. So, where does the -06 (aught six) come in? Well, the round was first produced in 1906. That’s right. The 30-06 simply means it was the 30 caliber round of 1906.
Before retiring into an American hunting cartridge, this round was used with the M1 Garand during WWII and in Korea. As a matter of fact, it was the military’s favorite rifle bullet for nearly fifty years. It was a favorite of Teddy Roosevelt, who took a keen interest in hunting (he left North America in 1909 and hit up Africa for a big game hunt).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the effective deer hunting range for the 30-06?

Most 30-06 ammo will be incredibly accurate within 400 yards. However, you also want to consider the muzzle velocity for an effective shot. If the round exceeds 3,000 fps, it may not expand. If it drops below 1,800 fps (excluding the Scirocco Bonded rounds), it also won’t expand.
Of course, do keep in mind that the effective range can vary based on your rifle barrel length. A longer barrel will result in a higher muzzle velocity thanks to a more complete powder burn than a shorter barreled rifle.
Therefore, if you’re using the Browning Gold Medallion lever-action rifle one day and a Ruger American bolt-action the next, you may get extremely different results.

Is the 30-06 a good cartridge for deer hunting?

Absolutely! The 30-06 Springfield has been bagging deer for well over a century and shows no signs of slowing down.
However, we can’t say that a deer will be able to tell the difference between a 30-06 Springfield, 270 Winchester, or the 6.5 Creedmoor, provided you select an appropriate bullet that expands and penetrates well. Smaller rounds like the 223 Rem can be used but many states prohibit them for deer hunting.
As stated previously, there are some 30-06 rounds that may leave you following a blood trail in the woods for hours. But as long as you choose one of the options we listed (or something similar), you’ll have an excellent hunting round.

What is a premium hunting bullet?

Premium hunting bullets are those that are manufactured specifically for controlled expansion and penetration. The term first reflected Nosler’s partitioned ammo because, before that, bullets didn’t exactly focus on terminal ballistics.
Today, several ammo manufacturers push the limits of imagination and engineer all sorts of ways to make bullets better for hunting. Premium bullets often have higher ballistic coefficients and are incredibly accurate. You’ll still find them with a common boat tail and spitzer design, but it’s what’s inside that counts!
Others love that they can purchase a few rounds and start reloading. No matter your preference, a premium bullet typically performs better.

Do manufacturers still make bolt-action rifles chambered in the 30-06 Springfield?

Yes! The caliber may be old, but you’ll find Ruger, Mossberg, Remington, Savage, and many others still make bolt-action rifles chambered in 30-06.

Is there a nickel-plated brass 30-06 hunting round?

Yes. Notably, the Sierra Gameking uses a nickel-plated brass case.

My 18yr old daughter is dating a guy who was kicked out of the divorced parents home. The parents dont live together, and they dont reallly care about ther 22 year old son. Hes not a bad guy just needs help. Hes not allowed to sleep over or stay here. We dont want to kick him out into the streets. We would RATHER REALLY HELP HIM get on his feet. HE needs low cost housing and some guidence. He told us hes getting a construction job soon. and that will help his $$ situtation. were not sure where he goes during the day.
Looking for a shelter for young men who can teach and guide him. I googled shleter but only found places for homless people, MSC Homeless Shelter, i guess this is a good start. He is homeless.

2023.03.20 20:53 marcandreewolf I asked GPT-4 to compile a timeline on when which human tasks (not jobs) have been/will be replaced by AI or robots, plus one sentence reasoning each - it runs from 1959 to 2033. 2023.03.20 20:49 Severe-Button-3857 Have no energy after work.

I’m 25(M) been working construction for 4 years now (high rise plumber) I get up at 5am get to the job site for 6:30am, I clock out at 3:15pm. Then I go to the gym straight after work. By the time I get home I barley have energy to eat dinner (which is made for me) after I eat I have no energy to do anything.. I just want to lay down and try and prepare my self for the next day. I do this everyday (still tired even if I skip gym) I’m also single, how am I ever suppose to get a girlfriend if I literally have 0 energy to even talk to a girl. I do this all week then the weekend comes and I’ve noticed I’m even exhausted on the weekends. I find my self relaxing to prepare for the new week. How is this sustainable?
Also I live in Toronto, Canada and everything is so expensive. I get paid very well, live with my parents, and I’m still broke. .. i have debts and bills of my own to pay, I bust my ass everyday and ask my self will I ever be able to afford a house one day ? It’s so stressful. Any advice for a young male like my self ? Anyone else feel like this ?

2023.03.20 20:46 PersonWhoLikes2 OPINION: The top 10 worst things Joe has done

10. Murdering Vic
Killing this guy wasn't self defence as many claim. He was pointing a gun at Joe after finding out he killed Malcolm. And he was literally phoning the police to turn Joe in when it happened. So Joe evidently wasn't in any danger unless he would have attacked him first.
And Vic shooting Joe after seeing him creepily stalk Kate, finding out that he murdered Malcolm and then getting attacked by him is self defence.
Joe murdered him to get away with his crimes. That's all there is to it.
9. Murdering Hugo
This guy was just doing his job, and just happened to be seriously unlucky and in the wrong place at the wrong time. And for that minor offence, he had his ankle slit and was murdered.
A bit worse than the Vic situation, in that Joe landed himself in this predicament through his own actions (tying up Tom and preparing to murder him), where as at least in the Vic case he was caught off guard.
8. Murdering Eddie
Again, another murder Joe committed because he'd rather a person died than he had to own up to his crimes.
Worse than the Hugo situation as this was premeditated. He had already constructed a frame job for Eddie so evidently this had been in the works for more time.
7. Murdering Beck
So Joe had murdered Benji and Peach. Of course he didn't want to accept the consequences and allow justice to them and their families. So he murders yet another person instead.
Worse than the Eddie situation as the way in which he killed Beck was much more violent. He killed her via strangulation, as was revealed through Beck's ghost showing Joe her neck in season 2, and Joe strangling Forty after he said the things Beck said to him before he killed her.
6. Trying to murder Candace
I think this was worse than the Beck case because Beck was a much larger threat to him. She would have had him in prison for two murders.
Candace threatened him with an assault and abduction sentence. Lesser threat, yet Joe still resorted to the same solution.
5. Murdering Benji
So this was the same threat as the Candace situation. Joe killed Benji to get away with assault and abduction. Except I think it was worse because this was premeditated. Joe had to prepare the poison and then take it down to Benji and watch him drink it.
4. Murdering Peach
I think this is worse than all of the crimes so far as the rest were at least done for self preservation. Nowhere near an excuse, but at least a better reason then...
Killing someone so you can keep dating a girl...
Any info Peach may have gained on Joe comes from his attempts to kill her. So ultimately, he decided to kill this woman so he could keep dating Beck. To him, his relationship has more value than a person's life.
3. Framing Dr Nicky
I think this is worse than the former 7 because it's not something he did just once. He does it every day. He could confess to the framing and set Dr Nicky free from prison and clear his name. But he refuses every second of every day to do so.
He can't unkill people, but he can free Dr Nicky. Yet he doesn't.
2. Framing Nadia
Same thing as the Dr Nicky one, except Nadia is a much better person. So defo worse.
1. Murdering Elijah
I think this one is the utter worst because.... He didn't even do it to get something. There was literally no practical gain from this. He just... killed him.
Brutal.

2023.03.20 20:43 terencebogards Question(s) About Grandfather's Service in Engineer Corps in Pacific Theater - 1943-1946

Hey Reddit,

Been diving back into the scant records of my Grandfather's service as part of the 340th Engineers in the Pacific Theater from 1944-1945. I've found some incredible sources but there are some very confusing points that leave my unsatisfied when it comes to finding as close to what really happened as possible. Basically, before I bring some of these stories and photos to my grandmother and/or family in general, there are a few sticking points that leave me scratching my head.
I don't expect any of you to do additional research or help me in unreasonable ways, but I would assume there is some collective knowledge about how units were assembled, named, divided, etc during this time. I've just gotten to the point where I'm looking at literal bridges he might have built and I can't stop thinking I could be on the wrong path.
If you don't want to help or care about my search, PLEASE MAKE SURE TO check out some of the sources below! The Books from the 340th Group are absolutely amazing records.
----------------------------------------
My grandfather joined the Army Engineers after (I'm assuming) one last hurrah of an Independence Day, signing up for service 7/5/1943 in Syracuse, NY. We have notes and discharge papers, but there are a few discrepancies between the sources I've found, his separation papers, his notes, and general internet records. I'll list some of the great sources I've found before.

I *think* they give me most of the story, but again, raised a few more queries... examples:

1. His notes and discharge papers both say he was part of the 340th Engineers Construction Battalion, *however* his notes also list -
"340th ENGRS to
5251 ENGRS (1944)
596 ENGRS (1944)"
I cannot find any existence of a "5251" or "5251st" unit anywhere in WWII records. There seems to have been a "596" / "596th" Airborne Engineers Company that served in the European Theater which makes 0 sense to me. https://www.ww2-airborne.us/units/596/596.html It's possible these notes are tracking where a friend ended up, because NONE of my Grandfather's notes show any service anywhere except South Pacific. This is a sticking point to me that I cannot make sense of.
His Note - https://imgur.com/a/4jP9Tzq

2. Following the "340th Engineers" path led to my first positive result when I began searching, but just like Bender finding his cigar had burnt down Zoidberg's house - "That just raises further questions!" - Hermes
In the two absolutely incredible sources I have listed below that follow the 340th Engineers through the war, I finally found my grandfather's name listed.
THE PROBLEM -
Book one on the 340th (Lower Post or Freeze) follows the 340th Engineers from 1942-1943 in a 16month expedition to Alaska and BC, Canada where they constructed a highway. When this mission was completed and they were called back, they traveled to Camp Sutton, NC in 1943. THIS is where my grandfather undoubtedly joined up with the main unit, makes total sense.
What doesnt make sense is that he is in the FIRST book only, and not mentioned ANYWHERE in the second book...
This omission, coupled with the confusing notes mentioned in Point 1, are my biggest source of doubt when I want to see Book 2 - 340th Engineers In The Pacific as a definitive record of his service in the war.
In BOOK 1, my grandfather is listed under "B Company". Again, he is NOT in BOOK 2, but BOOK 2 has some absolutely breath taking documentation on, not only the 340th as a whole, but of bridges and runways built by B Company.
Take the confusion out of play and I have found a holy grail of documentation on my grandfather's service.
Leave the confusion in and I cannot allow myself to get too excited about what I have found because I just CANT know for sure. His notes include names of some commanding officers and not a single one shows up in BOOK 2.

----------------------------------------
CONCLUSION:

IN ALL FAIRNESS - I BELIEVE BOOK 2 ACCURATELY DESCRIBES MY GRANDFATHER'S SERVICE, AS THE DATES AND LOCATIONS MATCH HIS NOTES EXACTLY. FROM STARTING AT CAMP SUTTON, GOING TO DARWIN, AUS, THEN ONTO NEW GUINEA, LEYTE, AND MANILA.

I'm fully ready to call this search completed, but I would LOVE any sort of additional clarification before I would show this book definitively as a good record. I don't really understand how units, battalions, companies, corps are defined or used in these senses. I believe 340th was his battalion, B Company, but idk any more really.
I know this might seem like an arbitrary distinction and a single error or omission of him in BOOK 2 could explain this all, but that omission coupled with his confusing notes on unit numbers just leaves me very unsatisfied.
Hopefully you can see that I'm earnestly trying to figure this out and not just trying to have someone do the work for me. I believe my mother has tried to get records before but its possible they were lost in the massive fire that destroyed 16 MILLION records some time in the 1970s. I honestly don't know what other records there would be besides his discharge papers and notes. Nothing could possibly be more substantial than BOOK 2.
I've set up an account for my grandfather on Together We Served but obviously finding contemporary vets is not easy, and even children of these vets are beginning to pass from old age.
I lived with my grandfather from age 3 until his death in 2004 when I was around 13/14. He was like a father to me. I'm the most tech savvy person in the family who is this interested in this, so I would really love to have a definitive answer for my family members, but again, I understand that might not be possible.
REGARDLESS OF MY SEARCH - I HOPE YOU CAN ENJOY SOME OF THE AMAZING SOURCES I HAVE DISCOVERED AND LINKED BELOW!!!

----------------------------------------

From his notes, I believe his service went like this -
7/1943 - Enlists in Syracuse NY
8/1943 - ? Camp Claiborne, LA
? - 2/1944 - Camp Sutton, NC (Joined up with 340th and headed to Vancouver, WA)
1944 - Darwin, AUS (Built B29 Base for Bombing Raids)
9/1944 - Milne Bay, New Guinea
9/1944 - 10/1944 - Arrives at Tacloban, Leyte - Set Up ENGR Supply Depot - (Either before or after "largest naval battle in history" in Battle of Leyte Gulf", My Note)
1/1945 - Manila / Luzon
12/1945 - Left Manila/Luzon
1/1946 - Camp Stoneman, CA after Operation Magic Carpet

Thanks for reading!
This kind of all started when I listened to Dan Carlin's "Supernova In The East" and kept hearing names and places I had seen in our records. Once I started cross referencing my grandfather's records with the actual history my interested skyrocketed. Grandpa never spoke much about the war and I don't intend on reveling in the horror he might have seen, but I would truly love to be able to "know" these stories I'm reading are somewhat accurate to his experience.

EDIT 1: I removed the full discharge papers out of abundance of safety. I will re-upload selective parts ASAP. My grandmother depends on his remaining vet benefits for housing and would never want to jeopardize that.

2023.03.20 20:33 autotldr World can still avoid worst of climate collapse with genuine change, IPCC says

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 75%. (I'm a bot)
Avoiding the worst ravages of climate breakdown is still possible, and there are "Multiple, feasible and effective options" for doing so, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has said.
Aditi Mukherji, one of the 93 authors of the "synthesis report", the final section that draws together the key findings, said: "Almost half the world's population lives in regions that are highly vulnerable to climate change.
The first three sections covered the underlying science of the climate system, the impacts of climate breakdown and the ways of tackling or reducing the problem, followed by Monday's synthesis chapter drawing the previous three together.
Simon Stiell, the UN's top climate official, said: "We are in a critical decade for climate action.
Ed Miliband, the shadow secretary for climate change in the UK, said: "António Guterres is right to say that we need to rapidly increase the pace and urgency of the fight against the climate crisis.
"In Britain, we have a Conservative government whose net zero strategy is so bad that it has been declared unlawful. The tragedy is that the Conservatives are holding us back from reaping the benefits of the green transition - lower energy bills, millions of good jobs, and a livable future for our children and grandchildren."Labour will make Britain world leader in tackling the climate crisis, with our plan to make Britain a clean energy superpower by 2030, and by leading a clean power alliance across the world to create cleaner, greener energy.

2023.03.20 20:33 justsomedude717 [OC] Film Analysis on the Misuse of AD Offensively

So through out a lot of AD's tenure on the Lakers, specifically this year, I feel like the team has done a pretty poor job of running the offense through AD and I decided to try and break down some recent film to look more into it. He makes plenty of mistakes so this post isn't attempting to absolve blame, but more just give constructive criticism to how he's being used offensively. Because of this I'm gonna focus on taking somewhat rare examples of the Lakers making smart decisions around AD to point out what they should do more often rather than just posting low lights

Very curious for other's thoughts on what I'm suggesting they do more of, if you think the analysis is fair, or if you think you have even better ideas on how the team should be utilizing Davis

PS This is my first time doing this so I'm very open to constructive criticism as there's at least a chance I'll try and do more stuff like this in the future

Lets start with some examples of lack of off ball movement:

In this clip you see the entire defense focused on him. Rui cuts to the middle of the paint but he cuts to a place where there's no open passing lane, but there's no meaningful movement on offense and it leads to a lazy iso jumper.

In this one you see something somewhat similar with vando cutting to the middle, AD being doubled with every player looking at him. He misses the shot but the lack off off ball movement just makes it incredibly easy for the defense to focus on him while cutting off passing lanes.

Now if you watch the Lakers you've seen a ton of plays like this, especially since the raptors spent most of the game selling out to stop AD recently. The rest of the team stepped up in that game and punished the raptors for their scheme but as teams replicate the strategy its made the holes in the rest of the lakers offense much more clear. I'm not gonna spam a bunch more clips like the two before, but just wanted to give you examples of how the lakers offense running through AD is often just getting AD in iso and hoping he can beat a double/triple (which is obviously a terrible way to run an offense).

Dibble hand off (aka DHO) potential:

Here you see a DHO between AD and Reaves where ADs defender drops, reaves defender picks him up giving reaves a solid look. Not only this but Brown Jr's defender slides to reaves creating a wide open 3 on top of everything else

Plays like that open up opportunities like this where you can get Davis in single coverage once again because the defense has to respect his teammates on some level

Now after you've established the threat of that it leads to plays where teams have to respect it, once again giving the best player on the team easy looks

Off Ball cuts:

AD isn't jokic but there are 100% ways you can set him up for easy passes to help create shots for others like this.

Cutting more even when AD isnt the focal point of the play can open up shots for him as well. He can be very effective off ball, and the more you can do stuff like this the harder it is for a coach to solely rely on swarming him

Guard Screen potential:

Here you have Beasley screen for Davis setting him up to take a midrange jumper. As we all know this isnt the exact spot you want AD shooting, but its so much better than what you see far too often -- him being swarmed with no one working to get open, often resulting in far worse jumpers

He misses this and once again its not ideal but seeing them try something like this is still an improvement over a lot of their stagnant possessions

Id love to see them explore using guards as screeners off ball too when AD has the ball to create open shots for shooters while AD is posted up with the ball. Opening up a couple good shots for him to easily pass out to could really force teams to focus more time, energy and attention on the perimeter. This isn't a perfect example of that but its at least them using motion off ball to actually take advantage of the gravity AD creates so regularly

Pick n Rolls (aka PnRs):

This is an obvious one because AD is obviously a great lob threat, but I still feel as if the team doesn't try and use PnRs to their advantage as much as they should (LeBron coming back could help this a lot tbf)

The play doesn't even have to be trying to force AD the ball, you can use it to open up passes to other players, which can in turn get enough of the defenses attention to get him open looks if the defense respects the other players just a bit

A similar example to the last

A play like this requires the defense respecting the guard on the roll, but this is the sort of pay off we can also see as we punish teams more from doubling AD. This is very achievable with LeBron, was a staple of the 2020 run, and yet its just severely under utilized even when he's playing

Another example of an imperfect jumper that's still much better than a ton of their offensive possessions

TLDR: Darvin Ham is bastard man and I probably spent too much time on this lol

2023.03.20 20:32 carlito808 Settling down in Germany

TLDR: start with basic German, then move to Germany, then ~1 year of real life exposure to the language + in-person classes + working basic jobs, eventually being able to work in original field.
I’ll tell you a little more about my situation:
I’m a 28 yo engineer (project planning and controls) living in Ireland, with 2y of experience in my current role and 6+ y of experience in engineering in general (construction). Life in Ireland is ok for now, but I cannot find myself having a family here. I’m from a South American country and I don’t see myself there neither.
I’ve thoroughly researched places I imagine I’d fit culturally and Germany comes at the top. The only barrier I see now is the language, which contrary to Ireland’s English, I don’t yet speak.
The current plan is to move to Germany first with a basic level of German (using Duolingo and Nicos Weg), getting real life exposure to the German language and join in-person German classes. During the first year I’d accept working basic jobs due to the language barrier, and within a year working in my field.
I’m curious about other people’s experience that tired a similar approach.
Danke

2023.03.20 20:32 Media_Place_2022 How can a graphic designer distinguish themselves and make a memorable impression?

My day to day job is a construction worker but I am working as a graphic designer on the side for some extra cash.
I have some experience, a portfolio set up showcasing my work and I am actively looking for clients on many social media.
The problem I have been experiencing is the competition, there are graphic designers who are willing to do these jobs for little to no money.
I want some tips on how I can stand out, whatever it takes, I will do it.
Also, what is the best social media to market myself and what are the best ways to get my work out there, I am a terrible marketer and the guys from YouTube and the courses they sell are practically worthless.
Any help is appreciated, thanks!!
