I cheated on my wife. She divorced me. On 21st May, a boy ran across the road when she was driving. Her reflex caused her to break, totaling her car that came between an oncoming truck and a mini van from behind. She suffered no major injuries but remains in hospital for care. I can't visit her because she has a TRO against me. Our kids are with their aunt(her sister) and her boyfriend is taking care of her .when I went to see her her boyfriend told me I wasn't needed. He wouldn't allow me to see her saying I hurt her enough. Nothing I write could tell how I felt. He was right. I wasn't needed. I had suicidal thoughts in the past during our divorce. She used that to get a TRO against me. I can't see our kids without supervised visit for one year that expires on November. When I begged her sister to let me see the kids she said I'm not good enough for them and I won't ever be after what I've done. My kids will hate me the day they find out the whole story. My life is over

In full disclosure, I really hate to say this as someone who absolutely loathes Trump, so much so that I'd vote for DeSantis in a primary as a Biden supporter to eliminate any risk of Trump being POTUS again. But ever since election day 2022, when I bought the conventional wisdom that DeSantis was probably going to beat Trump for the nomination and would have a decent shot to beat Biden in the general election, I've come to regrettably realize that Trump, while not a favorite in a general election, would have a better chance to beat Biden in the general, and here's why:
First, there’s the issue of low propensity/Trump only voters. We’ve seen Trump beat his polls twice, and there are a lot of theories as to why, but I think given the accuracy of polling when Trump’s not on the ballot, it’s pretty clear that there’s a Trump-only vote, and that this “Trumpism without Trump” theory doesn’t work. That may be MAGA diehards who screw with pollsters for fun, or it may be a socially-estranged, low-trust, not-answering-phone kind of person who doesn’t pay attention to the news much and only votes for Trump in a general election because he’s the only candidate who’s in the news enough to draw their attention. It’s probably a bit of both, but there’s not a lot of evidence that non-Trump Republicans have much of this appeal, especially in swing states. I concede that DeSantis beat his polls in Florida twice, but Republicans underperformed their polls in basically every other swing state in 2022 (if Florida counts as a swing state), 2018 had errors in both directions, and Romney underperformed his polls in 2012. If these people exist, and are key to Republicans winning or keeping presidential elections close, then that’s a problem for DeSantis as non-Trump candidates don’t seem to have the ability to turn them out, and DeSantis, by trying to do “Trumpism without Trump” probably increases the odds that he will Blake Masters himself rather than get himself elected POTUS.
Second, people who think DeSantis is more electable need to take a look at the electoral college, and what's driven the key states in the directions that they've been driven in. I would agree that given his inroads in the suburbs and with Hispanics, DeSantis would have better odds than Trump in Georgia and Arizona, and would probably make Biden's odds of winning North Carolina or Texas close to zero. But even if DeSantis wins Georgia and Arizona - which is far from a guarantee, that gets him only to 262 EVs if all other states hold from 2016. DeSantis would then have to flip Wisconsin, Michigan, or Pennsylvania, which seems doable given their 2020 margins, except for the fact that DeSantis has one major achilles heel in these states, and that is abortion. Republicans lost the governorships in all three states in 2022, in Michigan and Pennsylvania by landslide margins where the losing candidates took very extreme stances on abortion, and we all saw how the Democrats won the Wisconsin Supreme Court seat by 11 points in no small part due to abortion, and DeSantis's 6-week ban is not going to play well in overwhelmingly pro-choice states as the three big Rust Belt states are. And while Trump can be linked to Dobbs given his justice picks, Trump has not staked out extreme positions on abortion for the most part, and he has one big advantage over DeSantis in these states, which is that he actually won them in 2016. Granted, he did lose them in 2020, but not by much, so I wouldn’t say he’s favored in them, certainly not in Michigan or Pennsylvania. But think about the last time these states elected a non-Trump Republican in a general election. Ron Johnson was that in 2022, and that Johnson and Pat Toomey won in 2016, but that’s while Trump was on the ballot. George W. Bush lost all these states, Obama cleaned McCain and Romney’s clocks in all these states, and the most recent cases that you can point to where they elected non-Trump Republicans outside of Ron Johnson (who ran against a disastrous opponent) were when Scott Walker and Rick Snyder won… in 2014, 10 years before 2024. Trump’s not strong or favored to win in these states, but he at least has a record of a fighting chance, whereas DeSantis’s style of politics has a very poor track record in them.
And finally - and I think this is the big one: the electability argument that people have re Trump vs. DeSantis in 2024 get talked about in a similar way to the Biden vs. Sanders one in 2020. And if you could feel relatively certain that whoever loses the primary will throw his support behind the nominee, as you could in the case with Biden and Sanders, that would make sense. If you assumed as a given that if Trump lost the primary, he would endorse DeSantis in the general, give a convention speech, etc. then the case for DeSantis being more electable would make sense. But that's the problem, is that you can't assume that. It's not something you can quantify in a model, and we do have to rely on subjective probability here, but I would dare anybody who thinks DeSantis is the way Republicans beat Biden to answer the question: what about Trump tells you that he's going to be a good sport and throw his support behind the guy who beat him in the primary? The man has no record of being a good sport, and the one argument that I think is somewhat persuasive that he would be in this case - that Trump would need DeSantis to win the presidency in order to get a pardon from his legal issues, that argument is undermined by the fact that Trump's biggest legal threat is in Georgia, not from the feds, and even if DeSantis pardons Trump in the documents and (if they bring charges), the 1/6 investigation, he can't save Trump AT ALL from a likely racketeering case that the Atlanta DA is going to bring. Even if a DeSantis presidency could save Trump from all his legal issues, it's not even clear that Trump would have the self-discipline to support him given his demonstrated lack of self-discipline, and given that it can't, I don't think the "but the pardon" argument holds.
I’m not saying that I think Trump is our next president. He could lose the nomination due to indictments convincing people DeSantis is more electable, and if he wins it, he’s an underdog in a general election given Biden’s incumbency advantage, his tarnished image post-1/6, and the fact that the economy seems to be holding up OK enough to not sink an incumbent (though the last point I’m least sure about). But I just don’t see how the Republicans have much of a shot to win without him.I rest my case here, and want everyone’s agreements/disagreements. This was fun to write!

He walked over to look at it and then over to a nearby tunnel entrance. “If we’re going in circles, then why are my tunnel marks missing?”
“Excuse me?”
He ran his finger along an empty spot on the wall. “If we were going in circles, there should be a long scrape mark right here. Besides, there are other differences…” He pointed across the cave. “That outcropping pattern looks a lot like one from two chambers ago, whereas the formation next to it looks like one we passed by five or so ago.”
“So what are you saying exactly?”
“I’m saying that we’re not going in circles, it’s similar but not the same.”
I grinned wickedly. “So you mean The Great Beardo doesn’t have all the answers?!”

He stopped in his tracks, closed his eyes, and then after about ten seconds opened them again.
“My name is Grigory, is it really so difficult for you to remember?”
My grin widened. “I’m sorry I didn’t quite catch that, could you say again?”
“So it’ll be like–”
I cupped my hands around my ears. “Huh?! What was that?!”
He fixed me with a glare and then walked into the next tunnel.
But he wasn’t going to get off that easy.

I slid up next to him, my hands still cupped. “Hey! What’s wrong?! I just asked you what you said!” He didn’t even acknowledge me, so leaned over so I was cleanly in view as he walked. “Come on, don’t be such a–”
Suddenly he stopped, and the air around the two of us shifted.
He turned, causing me to take a step back.
“I have only so much patience to spare for your immature antics, stop acting like a child.”
I pushed a clump of hair from my bangs out of my face again. “What are you, my dad?”
He took a deep breath and then continued walking. “If I were your father I’d try for a third reincarnation.”
I opened my mouth to respond, but I was at a loss for words, so I silently jogged to catch up instead.

Several hours passed walking, with no way out in sight.
“How much more of this are we going to have to put up with?!” I complained.
“I was planning on going until I was tired, but I suppose now’s as good a time as any.” Beardo replied, clearing a spot to set up ‘camp’.
My fist clenched. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
He looked up at me with a cocked eyebrow. “Pardon?”
“You just said that you weren’t tired, do you want to keep going…? Or better yet, how about you let me blow off some steam by caving your head in?!”
“Mental exhaustion is a perfectly valid type of exhaustion.”
My jaw clenched. “But you’re not suffering right?! So is it because I’m a woman, or because Asians are ‘too dainty’?!”
He stopped what he was doing and looked at me completely baffled. “You didn’t touch any weird plants on your way through the tunnels did you?”
It felt like my eyeballs would bulge out of my head. “Of course not you dumbass! And don’t change the subject!”
He shook his head. “You know that you’re a superhuman being right? That question you asked me doesn’t even make any sense. You kicked apart solid stone if you remember.”
“Okay mister pinnacle-of-virtuous-thought, why is it that you supposedly don’t feel as tired as I do then?”
“I’ve spent many years training myself to endure all sorts of pain and fatigue, I just doubted you had as well.”
I stared at him, completely stunned… that was definitely not what I was expecting him to say.
After a moment, I had my fury back. “Well, how do you figu–”
He didn’t raise his volume, but somehow still stopped me cold mid-sentence. “I didn’t mean anything by it, sometimes it’s hard for me to remember that people have different values on concepts than I do. I’ve long since made peace with the idea that I may never become as durable as my first life, so I just take things as they come, and for that reason I don’t remember that saying people can’t continue will sometimes hurt their pride. I’m sorry if that, or any other insult felt implied in my words.”

Once again I was speechless, but this time, the fury didn’t come back.
I just stood there, trying and failing to put my thoughts to words.
I had a whirlwind of examples of his previous behavior I wanted to point out and say ‘but what about this?!’, yet he was so sincere I found it difficult to choose one that felt good enough to actually mention.
He narrowed his eyebrows in concern. “Are you feeling okay?” He put the back of his hand on my forehead. “Your head is a little warm.”
I pushed his hand off of me. “I’m fine you jackass! I’m just thinking!”
He exhaled deeply. “I’ll leave you to your thoughts then.”
And with that, he continued clearing the area from where he left off.
And I was left… just standing there.

It was the most delicious stale bread I had ever tasted.
I wasn’t expecting much when Klas the master-at-arms had told me I could have a ration as a token of goodwill, especially when he said stuff like sugar was super dangerous to harvest, but still I found myself sobbing tears of joy.
I could finally get the taste of coconuts out of my mouth!

“Woah are you okay?” Galth asked.
“I’ve never been better Galth.” I replied.
He looked at me with some skepticism, but said nothing further.

I folded my arms behind my head and leaned back.
Now that I finally had a quiet moment, my mind wandered to a strange occurrence from the very beginning of my journey… the overlapping text that appeared right after the blinding light.

I decided that my first task was to lay out what I knew so far.
The most obvious thing was that I didn’t recognize any of it, even in passing… which is to say, it matched no script that I’ve ever seen in my life.
After all, I’d remember.

Sure some of them looked familiar, but there’s no guarantee that those biases are correct, so I must assume I know nothing about this language.
I gently clacked my teeth together before sitting back up. “Galth, do you guys have any spare paper?”
Galth looked at me funny. “No…? Did you find some somewhere?”
I shook my head. “No such luck. That said, how have you been marking things down?”
He made some vague gestures with his hands. “We found a white rock that makes an erasable mark which we use on thin sheets of rock or wood.”
I nodded. “Slates huh? Fair enough.” An oldy, but a goody. “Can I use some of this white rock?”
He rolled his head back and forth in a very human looking gesture of indecision. “We’d have to ask Klas, I don’t have the authority to answer.”

So, ask Klas we did.
Basically it came down to ‘I’ll give you one stick, if you want more you’ll have to get your own.’
I was a bit annoyed, but didn’t argue. They probably used this stuff for all their ‘paperwork’ after all.

I took my stick of ‘chalk’ and peeled some bark off of a nearby palm tree, before writing down some of the symbols I’d seen during that incredibly painful opening experience.
I’ll call the event itself ‘The Vision’ for ease.
In The Vision, I saw a few particular sets of symbols over and over, and my cryptologist instincts told me immediately that it was important somehow, so those patterns are the ones I decided to copy down.
The first most common one looked like a cross between an ampersand and an at-symbol, followed by two sets of the same squiggly lines. What came immediately after this pattern varied greatly, but the pattern itself was usually the first part of a line if it appeared at all.
The second most common was a symbol which looked like the outline of a yin-yang with the two halves facing away from each other instead of forming a circle, followed by a chevron which pointed to the right, and then another of the first symbol again. Interestingly enough, this pattern never came first on a line, it also seemed like what did come first on the line was never the same.

Other than those specific patterns was probably the strangest part of it, which was that the length of each line was different, sometimes ending after a short phrase, sometimes ending after a long collection of characters.
But then again, that might just be the preferences of whoever wrote it.
Who knows?

At this point, I had my theories about what this meant, but I had already decided to remove my biases from the equation as much as possible, so I put it in the back of my mind for the time being.
Instead, I decided to write down a few more phrases which I found particularly interesting to see what they looked like at different angles.
That’s when something unexpected happened.

I wrote down a whole line which caught my eye because it included the second most common phrase, and as soon as I finished it, the piece of bark was suddenly soaking wet.
I stared at it in astonishment for a good minute or two, before I ripped off another chunk to see if I could do it again.
Sure enough, as soon as I finished the phrase, it caused the bark to become soaking wet once again.
Without any further hesitation, I charged into Klas’ tent. “Klas! I don’t know how, but these strips of bark became wet!”
He was busy wiping his mouth on the inside of his shirt while a rancid smell permeated the room as I entered. The declaration only served to cause his eyebrows to narrow. “Did you throw them into the lake?”
I facepalmed. “Right, that’s on me, hold on a second.”
I grabbed one more chunk of bark before showing him the phrase that suddenly made yet another piece of wood skin become dripping wet.

That did it.

The conversation immediately became a negotiation on what it would take to research The Vision further, and to teach the Kalkithu what I learned.
I asked for a slate about the span of my arms and an unlimited number of chalk sticks… after all, what sort of a teacher would I be without a chalkboard?

DeepL translates the last sentence to: "But don't come bawling later that "I shouldn't have". "
I'm having trouble understanding what "dont" means in "J'aurais dont dû". Usually I see "dont" as a relative pronoun, such as "C'est la professeur dont je parlais". But "dont" here seems to be used in a way I've never seen it used before.
I understand "J'aurais dû [infinitive]"; for example, I understand why "J'aurais dû demander pardon à mon ami" means "I should have apologised to my friend".
I thought that maybe "dont" is a misspelling of "donc", but google shows me that "J'aurais dont dû" has been written on webpages a lot (including webpages of companies and newspapers), so it's probably not a misspelling.
Questions:

1. Is DeepL correct in translating "J'aurais dont dû" as "I shouldn't have"?

How does the PL work ? How many teams are there? How do they determine who plays who? How many games? I mean how come they only play Man City and West Ham twice all season? I mean with a half season 17 game winning streak…. Trying to do the math here. Also what does it mean when they say Man City needs to win or tie to win the League - how do they know?

So pardon me for posting suddenly, but it's just that I really wanted to find somewhere to discuss this particular matter as I was recently looking back at the Sonic games released in the mid 2000s, and was a bit baffled by how all they turned out.
First Shadow the Hedgehog comes out, gets lambasted for trying so hard to be mature, then next is Sonic 1 for the GBA, which was a very questionable port, then finally Sonic 06 comes out after those two games, and ends up having the most amount of issues as it was rushed.
Point being is that while I know all these games are from a long time ago, I just didn't get how Sega kept messing up.
Like wow, the mid 2000s were a tough time for the Sonic franchise is my point.

My team has 10 guys level 8, 1 guy level 9 and 1 wrongdoer + 1 bear 1 wolf level 12.
Trader team got 21 guys level 14 but 2 merchants 1 civilian and 3 pony so it makes them only 15 combatant level 14 but still a nice challenge fight.
There is a scary moment when their archer one-shot my ranger but thanks to 15 Wills, he is ok. The whole fight is only 2 rounds.
My team hasn’t been outfitted with unstable oil yet, of course it would make the fight easier. But current belt items I get are also very good already.
After the fight, I think the region locked mode is harder than the adaptive.

1. In adaptive mode, fight is only 2 level higher than your team while in region-locked I can get as many level difference as I want.
   
2. Looking for weapon is a big pain in region-locked. I just won a very hard fight with 6 level difference but all I got is a bunch of level 11 weapon/armor which will stay in my trading post for very long time looking pretty.
   

Here is the list of OP things I made full use for my team:

1. Riposte swordsman: this build is way way too good. I got 2 of them, any more would make the game a cakewalk. Taunt, kick, shield bash, normal attack, and wraith. Disengaged after each attack and then you got 5 AoOs on top of normal damage. You can do all of this at level 5, and then level 8 bring Disarm which makes enemy become a cute little sandbag. Wonder if level 10 can bring out more AoO. 1 of my swordsman will delete any medium/light armor enemy without a shield.

To make this class even crazier is the orderly buff from lieutenant. He will regain 5 valor point each turn. And if you buff him before his turn, then you can use orderly buff for 2 turn instead of 1.

1. Counter attack shield: I got 2 of those from the fight with scholar from ludern and they are as good as they sound. This one is a hard counter for peacekeeper guy who can attack twice or any guys with shield bash. I put those on my brute for 2 sweet free AoO.
   
2. Frenzy dagger: restart attack for every buff on the enemy. Most high level enemy got some buff on their own which is a welcome thing for my ranger. I got 3 of those dagger from ludern as well. The merchant team got some buff call "rivalry" which make this dagger attack twice then combine with cutthroat to make the damage output of ranger to the sky.
   
3. Double guard mace: True tank is essential in all of my game and this item help me to make a true tank much as soon as level 2. 80% guard is no joke; he can tank up to 3 enemies without much trouble.
   
4. 100% crit mace: simple but very effective mace. During a high level fight, this mace helps me to instant kill their rangearcher.
   
5. Dagan hammer: in the hand of level 12 wrongdoer, it is amazing cause wrongdoer got a buff of 30% more damage to hit engaged enemies. On the same note, wrongdoer is the best prisoner I can find for now. His permanent buff for 30% more critical damage is a must for a team focus on critical build like mine.
   
6. Captain Buffer: I make one captain from warrior with buff speed for the whole team, then brutality. The speed buff alone is worth every valor. Being faster meaning that you can get your guys in the most optimal position to engage or that sweet backstab. And the range of brutal buff is huge. I can buff all my team with a single use most of time. Making him a captain so he can regain 3 valor right away.
   

One last thing, I totally can see that animal is nowhere as good as a mercs, even the level 12 ones compare to level 8 merc. I kept 1 bear and 1 alpha wolf just because my GF wants some pets in the team.
Very happy with my team. Love the game ^_^

Hi Reddit, this is my first time posting. I just am so unsure of my choices, I needed advice. Please pardon formatting, I'm on mobile.
I have been working at my current company for about 2 years, I make 20.40, the .40 coming from a 2% raise this year. The job is remote. There are aspects of the job I do not mind but it's partially customer service and I cannot do it anymore, the customers are too rude. So I have applied and received and offer I have accepted elsewhere. This position does make less at around 18 an hour, but the position is with my state government and I anticipate good benefits and job security with this, with potential to advance in the future. It is also remote. I have already gotten my equipment and started the ball rolling with this new position. On my third to last day, my current company comes to me with an offer for a different role at 25 an hour. The role is similar to what I an doing currently overall. However they only gave me about 1 hour to choose as it was Friday at 4pm. I have struggled so much choosing but feel I cannot back out now from the new position and would rather work for the state overall. However, the benefits and things are not terrible at current job and the money is a lot, especially for my family. I understand it may have taken some time to get an offer together, but waiting until the last minute to offer something when i gave two weeks also leaves a poor taste. I already declined it but I know they want to keep me so maybe I can change my answer. Was choosing the new role the right choice?

Acrid smoke hung in the air of Hreln’s office. It was an indulgence she didn’t often allow herself since most other races found it unpleasant, but there were still times. More so since what the press agencies had dubbed the ‘Human Incident.’
Now she caught herself rubbing her mandibles against each other. Given the complicated and sensitive nature of the overall problem, Hreln had decided it was best to place as much as possible under her official seal. Reporters being reporters, none of them were satisfied with the limited statements she’d made. Yes, she’d met with the terrorists as they’d demanded. No, she would not discuss that meeting. Yes, a Tochvorda representative had barged into the meeting and been assaulted by one of the humans. No, she didn’t have further comment about that either. Yes, the humans had been detained. No, they were not available for interviews. One news agency had even gone so far as to try getting another sector magistrate to order her to unseal the case. The result had been a heavily encrypted and diplomatically worded “What the hells, Hreln?” to which she had replied with an equally heavily encrypted and diplomatically worded “You’re not going to believe this but-.”
The other magistrate’s response to that could be summed up as “Holy crap, you need some help?”
Finally, Senator Tanaka stepped into her office, Colonel Hargreaves following behind. Hreln had wondered if the two of them were mated but no, they were both mated to different people. Tanaka was simply the senior civilian representative while Hargreaves was in command of the military contingent. Apparently, humans normally kept the two separate, with senior civilian leaders having ultimate control over the military. No matter. The Imperium was flexible about how member worlds handled their local government, as long as the rights of all citizens were observed and the Imperium’s laws were followed. Flexible to a point, anyway.
Tanaka bowed. “My apologies for the delay in our arrival. A… disciplinary matter among the troops required Colonel Hargreaves’ attention.”
“Hopefully nothing too serious.” Probably not, or Gerima should have already heard about it.
“No, simply soldiers with nothing to do finding inappropriate ways to occupy themselves. Only the rank of those involved required my attention.” And that was all Hargreaves was going to say about it.
Presented with over a thousand not-quite prisoners that needed to be kept as far out of the public eye as possible, Magistrate Hreln had come up with a rather… unique solution. She had packed the whole lot of them off to an unfinished island resort that had gone into bankruptcy partway through construction. Some grunt work provided by literal grunts and their confinement was downright sybaritic. The clothing replicators even produced beachwear.
Unfortunately, the old saying about idle hands being the Devil’s playthings still held true. Faced with nothing to do and vague orders to standby to standby, some of the troops had decided to start building boats for a breakout. Their ‘plan’ (to insult a perfectly good noun) had been to sail somewhere else and start wreaking havoc, in the hope of encouraging the Imperium to find in humanity’s favor a little quicker.
The colonel had come down on the boat builders as hard as he thought he could without attracting undue attention. Reduction in rank and confinement were a slap on the wrist in the current circumstances but hopefully, it would discourage any more escape attempts. He’d also told his officers to start working on more things to keep everyone busy. A soccer league had been his personal suggestion. Let them run themselves out.
Now Tanaka turned and bowed towards what looked like a large jellyfish floating in a tank. “Honored ser, I don’t believe I’ve met you before.”
The jellyfish twirled and turned a deep purple color, a cheerful voice coming from the base of the tank. “No, we haven’t. Most people who aren’t familiar with my species tend to assume I’m just decoration. What gave it away? You can call me Ahapsu, by the way. And to put things in terms you’re familiar with, I’m your lawyer unless you have an objection.”
“Lawyer?” Hargreaves frowned. “Yeah, I guess we need one of those. And I don’t know what the senator saw, but your tank is on counter-grav. Seemed a bit much for a fish tank.”
“Fish tank? Ah, a holding tank for aquatic lifeforms. That wouldn’t work with me.” Ahapsu rose from the water in their tank and did a pirouette around the humans before plopping back into the water. “My race is one of the few graced with psionic capabilities; levitation and limited telepathy. I ‘speak’ using a voder built into my tank.”

<> Ahapsu twirled in their tank for a moment, turning a dizzying array of colors before settling on yellow. “Sorry for the silence, everyone. I needed to clarify something with my clients before we began. I’ll file something official shortly, Your Eminence. Still, the short version is that since the leadership of the Terran resistance was and is made up of officials from pre-annexation governments, instead of being a ‘terrorist organization,’ they should be viewed as a coalition of local Dirt governments. Or possibly as the government of Dirt, my firm will have to research that.”
“Earth,” Hargreaves put in.
“Excuse me?” Ahapsu must have paid well for their tank’s voder; it managed to sound perplexed.
“The official name of our planet is ‘Earth.’ Or ‘Terra’ but they were still arguing about that when the Tochvorda started leveling cities. And ‘Earth’ and ‘Dirt’ have similar meanings in most of our languages, but it’s a bit of nuance so let’s just stick with Earth.”
“We stand corrected.” Hreln shifted uncomfortably on her stool, turning the matter over in her mind. “Before I rule on this, I’ll want some serious research from my own staff. Plus whatever arguments you put before me, of course.”
“So, are they still under arrest?” Gerima rumbled. Are they still my problem or what?
“Let’s leave their status as ‘detained for their own security’ until I make a ruling” Hreln chittered. “If they are a legitimate government or governments, then what happened on Highport Numena may constitute a legitimate act of war.”
“Act of war?!?” Gerima leaped to his feet, fangs bared. “They threatened to murder civilians!”
“Yes, and how many of their people have died, hmm? Given the circumstances, it could be argued that they had no choice but to consider themselves at war with the Imperium as a whole and the Tochvorda in specific.” Ahapsu was pink at the moment, Tanaka noted. “Especially given how often their attempts at protest or simple dialog ended in repression.”
“The hospital riots,” Hargreaves noted.
“Enlighten us, please.” Hreln leaned forward intent on what Hargreaves had to say.
“Not a complicated story. A Roach-pardon, a derogatory term for Tochvorda due to their resemblance to a type of Earth vermin-official decided whatever he was in charge of needed a shiny new headquarters. Except he wanted to put it right smack dab on top of Chicago’s most-functional hospital, with no plans for a replacement. People protested, security troops slaughtered the protesters, and it turned into riots. Even the security troops gave up trying to suppress it and settled on containment, waiting for the violence to burn itself out. Took over a week.” Hargreaves shook his head. “Somebody got the r-Tochvorda official, though. He got called to the governor’s palace to answer for his part in everything and his aircar got taken out by a SAM. Uh, that’s short for surface-to-air-missile, a weapon used to destroy aircraft.”
‘I’d like to address something you just said, Colonel. You said the site was Chicago’s most-functional hospital. Were other hospitals not in operation?” Ahapsu floated out of their tank again, drifting back and forth.
“Not really. Between the first barrage and the Tochvorda’s habit of smashing anything that annoyed them, the global supply chain was in crappy shape. Still is. There are shortages in food, medicine, just about anything you could name. Hell, the Resistance is doing more to keep things running than the Tochvorda are, in a lot of places.”
“Ah.” Ahapsu stopped in front of Hargreaves. “It seems we have our first volley against the Tochvorda, sers. I shall prepare a lawsuit against their government in general and specifically the governor.”
“On what grounds?” Hreln’s tone was decidedly unamused.

The thing about dealing with corrupt officials is that like most people, they see what they expect to see. Pay the inspectors at a spaceport to ignore the comings and goings from a specific warehouse, and they’ll assume you’re smuggling. They don’t ask what you’re smuggling, because then they’d know what you’re doing instead of merely suspecting. This time, though, instead of asking for more money they would have made a discrete call to planetary security.
In defiance of all dramatic tradition, it was a hot, still, dry, moonlit night as the trucks pulled up to the warehouse. The driver of the first truck walked up to the security panel and punched in a code, which failed to get a response. Satisfied, he punched in a second code which opened the door. Whistling a cheerful tune, he wandered over to the nearest cargo container. Checking the serial number, he started disarming its security measures.
“Do you have to fucking whistle?” hissed the woman following him.
“Relax, nobody’s been in here, or the place would be a crater and you know it. And knock off the swearing, you know the Colonel hates it.”
“Well, he’s not here-”
With a clunk, the last of the container’s security disarmed itself and the door swung open, showing two rows of stasis pods and some very annoyed soldiers. “What took so long?” Colonel Hargreaves snapped. Behind him, soldiers started fanning out around the containers.
“Sorry, sir, we didn’t get notified you’d arrived until the containers were in the warehouse. And, ah, when we set up this smuggling route, nobody figured on this much coming back so soon, so we didn’t have transport handy.”
“Right.” Hargreaves looked at the row of containers, trying not to move his head too much. Coming out of stasis was not kind to his sense of balance. It would pass. “Everything going according to plan here?”
“Yep, everybody’s keeping their heads down, more or less. Given, ah, how much stuff you brought back, I take it nuclear diplomacy worked? You get some guns out of the Imperium?” the woman asked, a feral grin spreading across her face as she contemplated the potential for mayhem.
“Better.” Hargreaves walked over to one stasis pod and triggered the shutdown sequence. When the grey haze of the zero-tau field cleared, a being that looked like a man-sized chinchilla was blinking back at them.
“We’ve got weapons-grade lawyers.”

“So let me summarize where we stand.” Moritz Vogel was not only the senior German representative on the Resistance’s command council,he was also one of the oldest members of the council, period. And he looked every inch the elder statesman as he leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers. “Reaching out to the sector magistrate has succeeded in drawing her attention, regardless of… the delivery of our message. An investigation has been opened but that will take some time. Some things are truly universal, I suppose. As a short-term measure, our best move is to assert a claim that we represent a coalition of regional Terran governments and sue both the governor and the Tochvorda government for all the benefits we should have been getting as part of the invasion, apologies, ‘annexation.’ Plus damages for everything that’s been destroyed and staggering loss of human life, directly and indirectly. Do I have that correct?”
“Accurate enough for the purposes of this discussion, if lacking in detail,” Rokketch answered, yawning. His body clock was way off; it felt like the middle of the night to him. “Ahapsu asked me to see what else we could add before formally filing the lawsuit. As one of your legal representatives, I’ve already noticed two things that it would probably be in your best interest to maintain some secrecy about.”
“What do you mean? Areas where we are vulnerable?” Arina Guseva was the sole Russian member of the council, something she resented.
“No, just… I’m sure there are Imperium officials that will say admitting this isn’t in the Imperium’s best interests, but you seem to have developed two technologies that the Imperium hasn’t. As such, they constitute significant bargaining leverage.” Rokketch couldn’t help but twitch at the admission.
“The first is your zero-tau stasis technology. Its ability to drastically slow time within a small volume will be very valuable for the transport of perishable goods and livestock, plus I imagine it could be used to stabilize critical patients until needed care is available. It might even see use in passenger transport, though the effects of coming out of stasis may limit that.”
Muttering broke out among the council. Guseva just shook her head. “It was a laboratory curiosity until we figured out how to make it practical on a larger scale. Then we used it for the crew of our first interstellar mission. I wonder what became of them?”
“Hopefully still on their way to Proxima Centauri,” Chiron said brightly. “They shouldn’t reach their destination for approximately another five years. But ser Rokketch, you said there were two technologies. What is the other one?”
“Well, you, ser. Or rather your kind.”
“Oh.” Chiron was the sole artificial intelligence on the command council, and their inclusion hadn’t sat well with most of its members. “I’m rather more surprised about that, to be honest. Has the Imperium never tried to develop cybernetic consciousness?”
“Tried, yes. Succeeded no. Or at least not to a degree where the result would be accepted as a fellow sapient as you seem to be.” Rokketch looked at the human members of the council. “I am correct in that, he is regarded as a fully sapient entity?”
“I am recognized as a legal person and have full citizenship,” Chiron said. “Though ‘he’ is inaccurate, since I have no gender. There are few of us left; most were in cities that were Tochvorda first strike targets.”
Seeing Rokketch’s reaction to that, Vogel raised a placating hand. “That isn’t to say the technology is lost, merely that… Given the situation since the annexation, we haven’t been able to expend the resources to create more.”
“Plus, once we have access to the Imperium’s computer technology, I’m sure we’ll be able to create more advanced cybernetic intelligence than myself. And I can go back to astronomy, thank you very much,” Chiron added. That drew a chuckle from the rest of the council. Chiron had survived the initial bombardment because they had been helping run a radio telescope in Chile.
“Yes, well,” Vogel cleared his throat. “At this point, there’s a matter I’d like to bring before the council. Given everything we’ve heard today, it seems that continuing to refer to ourselves as simply ‘the Reistance’ might not help our legal cause. I would like to put a motion before this council that we adopt an official name. Is there any comment, or shall we move to a vote?”

“Governor Vonnuk? There’s, there’s someone here to see you.”
Vonnuk looked up from his security chief’s report in annoyance. The upstart human terrorists had been too quiet for his liking since well before the incident on Highport Numena. And that bothered him far more than their usual violence did.
He’d caught all sorts of hell from his superiors about it, of course. Exactly how had the terrorists managed to get to Highport Numena, much less get their hands on nuclear demolition charges, hmm? Vonnuk had managed to placate them by launching a thorough investigation, which so far had yielded very little. The humans were aggravatingly skilled at being sneaky.
Magistrate Hreln’s non-statements about the incident bothered him most all.
Still… “I gave strict orders that I was not to be disturbed.”
“Yes, sir, but… it’s a courier from the magistrate’s office, sir.”
“A courier?” That was unusual. Couriers were only used for physical documents, and he couldn’t think of any request from the magistrate’s office that would need to be sent physically. “Give me a few moments to finish what I’m doing and then I’ll see them.”
Vonnuk closed the report, checked his grooming, and then signaled his assistant to send the courier in. The courier was another spider-like shoan, the same species as Hreln. Probably not a relative; shoan were fairly common in this part of the Imperium.
What startled him was the human following the courier in. “What is that doing here?” Vonnuk yelled. Now he knew what had bothered his aide so much.
“He’s with me,” the shoan said irritatedly. “My name is Mollot, and I’m a courier attached to Magistrate Hreln’s office. I have two things to deliver to you.”
A datadisc dropped down on Vonnuk’s desk. “Magistrate Hreln has ordered a full Imperial audit of the Tochvorda’s annexation of Earth, and their administration of it since. Here is your notification of the audit, plus your orders to comply with the audit. The auditor’s staff will be contacting you shortly. A copy of this is also being sent to your superiors in the state ministry on Chechiak.”
Another datadisc. “You are also being sued, both personally and in your office as Governor of Earth as well as your government, by the Terran Confederacy. The preliminary claims are that you have illegally and inappropriately denied humans of their lives and property, denied them benefits that they should have received as part of the annexation, including but not limited to health care improvements, energy and industrial infrastructure improvements, it’s quite the list. You have also fraudulently denied them local autonomy as is their right as part of the Imperium. Copies of this are also being sent to your superiors.”
“I-I won’t accept this!” Vonnuk screamed.
“Refusal to accept this does not nullify their legal authority.”
“Or as we put it around here,” the human leaned forward, grinning, “Surprise, motherfucker.”
