2023.06.08 18:34 Interesting-Sky-3752 35/F/Canada seeking pen pals from anywhere of any age
Hello, fine folks of Reddit! Lately I have been super disappointed in the persistent emptiness of my mailbox, and I hope some of you will help me change that! I also really need a way to use my ever-growing collection of fountain pens and inks! (what's up,
fountainpens)
So what am I like? Well first of all, to be up front at the top, I am a Christian. (Scary to admit on the internet but it's true.) I saw a post a few weeks ago in this sub that very specifically did
not want to write to Christians, which made me laugh. At least they were honest about it! I guess that will be important information to other people in this sub as well. I'm open about my faith, but I will never force my views on anyone or condemn anyone for living a lifestyle that isn't the same as mine. I'm not about that. I'm open to writing to anyone from all walks of life, we all have things we can learn from each other.
If you're still reading this, thank you! Some more things about me: I'm married, and my husband is my best friend. We have two cats, and they are our favourite little buds too. They are not always best buds with each other, but you know. Cats. They is what they is.
I love reading, and I love to talk about reading and books. I love Victorian fiction and post-apocalyptic fiction and historical fiction and sci-fi and fantasy and gothic fiction and books that make one feel cozy. The book I've read the most times in my life is The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Other favourite books include Station Eleven, Pride & Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Frankenstein, The Chronicles of Narnia, LOTR, the Mistborn series, Anne of Green Gables, Fahrenheit 451, The Hunger Games, The Martian, and so many more that I can't think of right now. The last book I finished was The Chrysalids by John Wyndham and it blew my mind, just a phenomenal read. Basically I read anything that's not scary body horror or full-out smut. Even if our reading tastes don't overlap, I still love to chat about books and reading!
I also love movies and tv. My husband and I tend to watch our favourite shows over and over. We've watched The I.T. Crowd, Avatar: the Last Airbender, Corner Gas, the Office, New Girl, Chuck, Parks & Recreation, and The Disastrous Life of Saiki K multiple times each. We are obsessed with Taskmaster: that show got me through the panorama, seriously. We recently watched Downton Abbey for the first time last winter and I would honestly die for Matthew Crawley. (As an aside, I will never forgive Dan Stevens, and also why are most of his movies so bad when he is such a good actor?) Movies, oh movies, I could talk about movies for ages as well. My favorite movie is the 2005 Pride & Prejudice movie, but I have so much love for the BBC adaptation as well. All the Jane Austen love here. (I didn't even think the Netflix adaptation of Persuasion was bad. Unpopular opinion, I know! I'm just full of unpopular opinions!)
I'm a knitter - gotta do it every day or my hands/brain feel wrong. I dabble in so many other crafts, but knitting is my one true love. If you are also multi-craftual, I think we will have a lot to talk about.
Do we have time to talk about music? My favourite singer of my whole life is Josh Groban. If you are also a Grobanite, we're already friends. My music tastes are all over the place - I'll listen to Abba and then the next song will be some kind of folk ballad, followed by a show tune, a lofi mix, and then some angsty rock from the 2010s. Spotify has been the most worthwhile subscription service for me, let me tell you.
As you can tell, I am rambly. If you like a long, rambly letter, you've found the right person to write to. I have self-diagnosed ADHD, which you could probably guess by how random this whole post has been. DM me if I haven't scared you off, and let's get the ball rolling! Okbai!

2023.06.04 16:09 germanME Were the "Martian canals" a Mandela effect?
Currently I am reading an old SciFi book (US original: "Stowaway to Mars" from John Wyndham). It's about a group of daring men setting off for Mars, and on the way they discuss the "Martian canals".
Does anyone remember that leading astronomers used to see canals on Mars? You can still find artifacts about it everywhere, but officially it's dismissed as an "optical illusion" these days. Here, for example:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martian_canals Quoting:
"The existence of Martian canals was still controversial even at the dawn of the
Space Race. In 1965, the
Sourcebook on the space sciences said that "Although there is no unanimous opinion concerning the existence of the canals, most astronomers would probably agree that there are apparently linear (or approximately linear) markings, perhaps 40 to 160 kilometers (25 to 100 miles) or more across and of considerable length."
[9] Later in the same year, the arrival of the United States'
Mariner 4 spacecraft debunked for good the idea that Mars could be inhabited by higher forms of life, or that any canal features existed. It took pictures revealing
impact craters and a generally barren Martian landscape, with a surface
atmospheric pressure of 4.1 to 7.0
millibars) (410 to 700
pascals)), 0.4% to 0.7% of Earth atmospheric pressure, and daytime temperatures of −100 degrees
Celsius were measured. No
magnetic field,
[10][11] nor
Martian radiation belts[12] were detected."
But nobody can explain so correctly, how these should have come to stand. The scientists were not idiots at that time, of course, they had worse telescopes, but not so bad.
The canals seem to have completely dissolved since Mariner 4, they are no longer seen or mentioned. It seems as if the previous reality has been erased and no one can really explain why we were so wrong before. As if they first existed, say to stimulate our imagination, and then disappeared when we were able to test our theories.
I ask because such examples could give information about how our reality is constructed. Is there some kind of indecision, like in the quantum world, which only dissolves when we measure concretely? Or does somebody manipulate us?
Are there amateur astronomers who have already observed Mars and what can they say about it? Or perhaps "medium statements" (something of Seth/Jane Roberts or something)? I would be interested in what you think and know about it.

2023.05.31 23:11 Progress_8 SoFi is up 28% in two days!
28% gain in two days! And Up 91 cents (+15.09%) today; not bad at all! I think we will see another substantial positive gain if the House votes yes to the Debt Ceiling Deal tonight. All of us should be richer significantly by this time tomorrow and much wealthier in the long term.
SoFi's total deposits grew by a record $2.7 billion in Q1 2023. While US banks lost $472 billion in Q1 2023 deposits. The All-in-one app, Flywheel, Fintech banking with minimal overhead, investment division, 2M FDIC insurance, and loan business (including Student loans !) are all starting to fall into SoFi's vertical integration. There is the expected positive earning this year and the future "AWS of Fintech". The strategic acquisitions of Galileo, Tachnisys, Wyndham Capital Mortgage, and Golden Pacific Bank secure SoFi's leadership in Fintech banking. SoFi's future is bright and I am here for the long haul.
Updated as of May 31st, 9:20 PM: The House passed The Debt Ceiling Bill by a huge margin.
SoFi still has another near-term positive vibe with the probable Senate approval that seals the deal to the President's desk. It would be unwise to vote against SoFi in the near term and definitely not in the long term.

2023.05.31 21:30 Marcelo1995211 First time in NYC
Hello, we are going to visit New York in October for the first time and we are looking for some place to stay. On booking.com I found Highbridge hotel (1263 Edward L. Grant Hwy., Bronx) but the hotel is new on booking and in the NYC. On google maps I didnt find this hotel. Could you tell me if this hotel is legit /real ? I read about some scams on booking.com so I woud rather to check it. Most hotels that we found are in South Bronx. Google maps shows that it is 30 min via subway to Times Square. Hotels in Brooklyn or Queens are much more expensive, and Manhattan is far away from our budget 😂 what do you think about South Bronx ? Should I look somewhere else and rather pay more for a stay ? Also what are places I should avoid/be careful to visit ? And what places you recommend ? Other hotels that we found: 1. Opera house hotel (436 East 149th street, Bronx) 2. Wingate by Wyndham Bronx Haven Park (2568 Park ave, Bronx) Which one is better? Every response helps. Thank you!

2023.05.30 04:12 After_Main752 How are continental breakfasts set up?
Is there a reason behind the wide range of offerings between budget-tier chain hotels (Super 8, Days Inn, Motel 6, Econo Lodge), even within the same company (Wyndham, Choice, etc)? I went to places that offered nothing or just coffee or granola bars, while other places under the same mark offered 1-touch pancakes and bagels, and one Days Inn even had a hot breakfast with sausage, eggs, and biscuits and gravy.
Do the hotels get a budget from the company for breakfasts based on performance or is it entirely up to the owner? I don't get why a $100/night room merits being watched by the front desk while drinking a coffee and eating Walmart granola bars.

2023.05.29 17:05 sauna_apartment Carless: Escarpment Trail, the Catskills NY
I've been meaning to do this for awhile as I've found the info regarding backpacking without a car in the NYC area lacking, half-baked, or in practice, untrue. The thread in the sidebar is excellent, but AT focused. I'll see a post that say take this bus service to a certain town and taxi to the trailhead, but what it may not say is that there is no service to call a taxi on arrival or that line only runs on weekdays that direction. Not to say I won't be repeating common knowledge as I definitely will, but hopefully you'll find something in my logistics useful for planning your own ventures sans car.
A little bit about me: I am a lightweight backpacker (slowly working on dropping my last few ounces) living in Queens, NY. I generally love the public (and private) transit in NYC metro area, although it always could be improved and there are aspects that are deeply frustrating, large and small. In addition to not having a car, I also work a 9-5 job; this and future trail reports will reflect that I often only have a weekend to enact my plans.
The Escarpment Trail - AllTrails
- Direction: SoBo
- Miles in total: ~26
- Nights: 1
Buy a ticket on the Trailways bus line from Port Authority to Windham, NY. On Saturdays, there is a bus that departs at 8am. That is the one you want. The Trailways' stations are in the bottom of Port Authority, terminals 28-34. Double check your bus is correct with the attendant as the what is on the directory and what terminal they're actually leaving from may be at odds. When boarding, tell the driver that you want the
Escarpment Trailhead Parking lot, which is slightly before Windham; in between Windham, East Windham, and Hensonville; after Cairo; on route 23. If you pass Smitty's Nursery & Landscape on the left you've gone too far. I didn't know you could ask the driver to drop you off at a non-designated stop, but he said it was okay as long as its on route. I'm assuming this is a driver by driver thing, but as long as you're not an ass about it, I bet they'll say yes. However, I did not know this perk until a woman request to be let off before Windham, and I got off with her and proceeded to backtrack to the trailhead on route 23. If you have to walk the shoulder, maybe you can hitch a ride, but you'd be luckier than me.
Make sure you have water. At the trailhead there is a stream. There is no water after that until 0.4 miles past Dutcher Notch, which is ~12 miles away.
Starting from the first sign off 23, the trail is very well marked (until North South Campground), simply follow the blue markers. A commenter on Alltrails writes:
If you can get Wyndham and BlackHead out of the way on the first day the second day is pretty smooth after the initial climb out of the notch. Amazing view after amazing view.
Views translate to ascents. Climbing Blackhead was confirmed steep and arduous after already hiking 9 miles. But this is the hardest climb during the trip, so once summited, it's all smooth sailing. Day 1 clocked about 11 miles (excluding walk to the trailhead).
I camped somewhere on the backside of Arizona Mountain overlooking the valley. It was gorgeous, but unexpectedly buggy for no water nearby and a slight breeze. If you're hiking this in two days one night as I was, you need to get to around the Notch. In the notch, there is an intersection between the Escarpment trail (straight), the Colgate Lake Trail (right), and the Dutcher Notch Trail (left). A short ways down the Dutcher Notch Trail there is a spring (a pipe in the rock) where you can filter water. This is the last place to filter water before North Lake.
Not much to report for the first half of the day; the Catskills are beautiful. There is a very cool plane wreckage. The Escarpment trail gives views to the NorthEast, and often times you can see the Green Mountains, the Whites, and the Berkshires, depending on the clarity. Eventually you'll reach North Point on North Mountain. Here, you'll start to encounter day hikers staying at NorthSouth Campground. I was fairly alone for most of the path; some families at the start, a few day hikers going to Windham High Peak, but very few backpackers. Which imo is preferable; I like the solitude. The frequency of day hikers increased the closer you get to the campground, but most of them were heading out as I was heading in, and only one had a bluetooth speaker.
Reaching North Lake, you are a jungle person breaching civilization. People are grilling and getting stuff out of their SUVs, while you smell and swim in your skivvies. Or at least, that's what I did. After a nice dip, find the blue markers at the back of the campground. There is no more markings for the Escarpment Trail although you're still on it. The signs will say to Catskill Mountain House Site and to Boulder Rock. Stay on the blue markers.
Eventually you'll come to Kaaterskill Falls. I only went to the lookout not the base, as I was unsure how much more walking I'd have to do and I was anxious about the time (around 2pm, the bus back was 5:55pm.) Also Kaaterskill Falls was overrun by tourists, which are different than day hikers. I can't complain as Kaaterskill Falls has been a tourist attraction since the mid 1800s, but after two days in the peaceful woods, I wasn't keen about been around all the activity.
Instead of finishing the Escarpment Trail at Schutt Rd. Parking Lot, take the
Kaaterskill Rail Trail to the Haines Falls Train Station. Its about a 1.5 miles of pathway that brings you back to route 23A. At 23A, take a right and walk along the shoulder for about 2 miles into the town of Tannersville, NY. On 23A, stop at the Twilight General Store for an optional ice cream, however the key stop is
Bear & Fox Provisions in Tannersville. Great selection of beer and cider, one of which the proprietor brews from apple trees from the side of the road.
Catch the 5:55pm Trailways bus from outside the pharmacy (
5980 Main St.), which after a brief stop in Kingston, returns to Port Authority. I would recommend buying both ticket ahead of time as I had varying degrees of mediocre service the whole trip. Day 2 clocked about ~14 miles (including walking to Tannersville)
The Escarpment is great trail for an experienced hiker. Like other Catskill hikes, it's as beautiful as it is difficult. It's very possible to do it in a weekend, but a slower paced individual or group may want to do it in three days, two nights which may affect bus times and accessibility. Enjoy a carless excursion and remember to bring an eye mask and ear plugs for the bus ride.

2023.05.29 10:11 NervousSundae2829 Melbourne rehab inpatient clinic
My partner needs psychiatric treatment for drug and substance abuse & mental health and is looking to go to either Hader Clinic Geelong, Wyndham, Arrow Health or Delmont Private for their detox, inpatient and outpatient program.
Drug addiction is important for him to treat however the mental health issues that lead to self-destructive drug use are the main focus he needs to be treated with so a dual diagnosis would be ideal.
He wants to treat the root of his mental health issues and learn to use healthy coping mechanisms as he deals with physical and emotional pain by self-medicating with drugs from being prescribed antidepressants, and heavy painkillers for years (he has gotten off them himself) but since then self medications heavy Coke abuse and the last couple of years, ice and ghb use - he is ready to ultimately better his life and relationships for good.
He was diagnosed with PTSD from childhood trauma and his accident and depression and anxiety 8 years ago. the two latter are on and off. His doctor has prescribed him with low-level Serequels to help with it and including random psychosis episodes that have happened on a few occasions in the last 5 years, and drug cravings he takes them mainly during a comedown. A detox and/or a residential inpatient program could be beneficial to get clean. He has gone on more benders recently to deal in the last few months.
During the "good" periods of his life, he is career orientated, gym and personal development focused and a great partner however the mental issues and drug use quickly changes all that.
He had Wyndham and Hader on top of his list however upon last-minute research and red flags, it seems like we need to do more research to ensure his recovery.
He has private health care with HFC Gold. Heard a few terrible things about Hader Ray too so nervous about him going there!
please let me know your experiences with these clinics or any others in Melbourne :) appreciate it! 🙏🙏
