2023.06.08 22:27 m80mike I Was a Pilot on Strike. This is Why We Went Back to Work.

Summary: A labor dispute coupled with an outbreak of unknown disease pushes all sides to war and a new truth.
I Was a Pilot on Strike. This is Why We Went Back to Work.
I was the second in command activist pilot in the Union based at O'Hare International, the unofficial headquarters of the strike movement. I remember when our strike started to heat up very vividly.
Fred, our Union boss, and Leo, the first in command activist, were sitting in the pilot's lounge, watching the tv coverage flash our picket lines from airports across the country. Something like “what do we want? The Package. When do we want it? Now!”
The Package was the nickname for our list of demands which included more security in the wake of the so-called Body Bombings last year, better pay and benefits, more job security, and perhaps, most controversially, cleaner fuel and fuel efficiency standards for current and future airliners.
The TV chirped up again, “well, folks its the twenty first day of the pilot strike most jets have been grounded now for the last eighteen as the pilots and their associated ground personnel unions have occupied major airports – only major international carriers at the coastal hubs are landing or departing now as we've seen a huge increase in train and car travel as we approach the fourth of july weekend. That's right, and our next top story as we gather for the holiday for first time after the omicron wave, health officials are advising to watch out for symptoms of a new skin...”
Fred hit mute on the remote. Fred was a balding, thick man, with thick arm hair, rolling over his grizzled sun burned flesh like barbed wire.
Leo lit up a cigarette. Leo was short, thin, and young in his looks but old, like faux 50's old in his heart. “There's no smoking in here, Leo,” Fred said sternly.
Leo didn't flinch.
Then Fred broke a smile and chuckled.
“Media bums aren't even interested in what we want anymore.” I said.
“Only these media bums. Follow the money.” Leo mumbled over his cancer stick. “That media group got a lot of money out of the bailout. Probably more than us.”
Fred looked at his watch, “We should probably get going.”
“Make em sweat for once, for Christ sake.” Leo nearly spat out his smoke.
“I'm with Leo on this one, Fred” I said.
So we made the negotiators sweat a little longer.
About an hour later we finally met them at the table. We sat on the left, the various airline owners sat on the right. This was the third time during the last three weeks but now, there was a new guy at the head of the table, a Federal mediator.
The Mediator had black rimmed almost square glasses, thick gray hair, and a blotchy face, “I'm calling this meeting to order. Before I present this offer, I have impress upon both sides how essential it is we start our air travel again soon, both for the holiday but also the good of the country. I am at this time presenting a voluntary compromise – officially, the Federal government supports the pilots' initiative to enhance security in the wake of the last year's incidents and we are prepared to use some of the unspent bailout money to supplement private airliner's initiatives and spending. We are also sympathetic to pilots and ground crews positions on their pay and benefits. The Federal government, however, is not, at this time, interested in imposing nor supporting job security, nor fuel charges nor efficiency standards. I yield to the industry representatives for comment.”
The chief industry rep, Michelson Connery, was a young looking, smooth talking, sleaze bag with jet black hair from New Jersey who had a habit of touching his coke inflamed nose every five minutes or so.
“You know back in Jersey, we're used to being shaken down, as they say. Now we appreciate the nice talk, we appreciate your brass knuckles and tommy guns are firmly tucked away, we appreciate you're giving us a break or too, but a shake down is a shake down none the less. No deal. I yield.”
Fred sat up in his chair, his mouth agape, he cleared his throat while adjusting his microphone, “No deal.” He flopped back into his chair.
“Before we depart,” the Mediator quelled the commotion as both parties began to leave, “As I said the federal government has a strong interest in resuming flights as soon as possible, we are considering using our unique power to impose a settlement on the Union, if necessary.”
Fred lurched forward, “What kind of power? What kind of threat is this?”
“It's no threat.” The Mediator paused, “It's a threat to a threat, if necessary, we will invoke our powers under various emergency statutes to effectively Federalize pilots and ground crews – under those provisions, we would impose work or removal provisions to settle this.”
“That's total bull!” Fred lunged at the Mediator, “You're basically telling us all they have to do is wait it until you force us back to work! And what about the future? These efficiency standards aren't just about hippie dippie environmental stuff, its about fleet upgrades, fleet safety and thus worker and pilot safety!”
“Gentlemen, please, I putting something on the table and it has neither a definite nor indefinite timeline – in the meanwhile, your adversaries are hemorrhaging cash and depreciating their capital and you're folks – especially your ground crew union, are running out savings – I suggest you both, in good faith, consider the current and official Federal position in good time to sort this out sooner than later rather than a threat of a threat become a threat. Good day.”
Within hours, each side called a respective press conference. Industry denounced the compromise set out by the Feds while we denounced their denouncement. Neither side budged and neither side disclosed the Mediator's so called “threat of a threat”. We sat on the picket lines for another week as each side floated various non-serious proposals and misinformation in the media. We found ourselves back in the pilot lounge before our next round of serious negotiations. This time Fred and Leo were both smoking while I had to exhale bad news.
“The ground crew union is gunna crack first, Industry is offering them a side deal and I think they're gunna take it. They go back to work, it's gunna be next to impossible to leverage the whole of the hubs, then the scabs come in, they'll just work around us.” I told Leo and Fred. “Then we maybe we should float lower pay increases for ourselves. Overall, you pay the few pilots a little bit more, you pay the huge ground crew nothing more, that sounds like the win for us and Industry.” Leo pitched back. “Leo, where do we stand on public support?” Fred inquired.
“I don't know.”
“What do you mean you don't know?”
Leo clicked on the TV, “our top story tonight, farm fields across the country are now being seemingly afflicted by some kind of blight resulting in, at in some cases, widespread crop failures as the department of agriculture is mum. Meanwhile, more and more people are reporting severe skin deformations and damage while the CDC has been all but muzzled save for recommending that people stay inside and avoid direct sunlight. At this time there is speculation but no official word the crop blight and the skin disease are connected.” “See, it's all blight this, blight that.”
“So fake,” Fred said, “I've been out in the damn sun all week on the line and I've got nothing. Whatever the damn news wants to keep real progress from being made here. Anyway, I say we stay the course and we firm it up with the ground crews, have some solidarity.”
There was a knock on the door, “heh, maybe this good news.” Fred left his seat to open the door. A neutral representative walked through and announced the Federal Mediator has canceled the session. Leo and I brewed up from our seats to go raise holy hell with Fred at the mediator's delegation when all the television screens in the lounge turned to an Emergency Announcement Service message. Leo fumbled to unmute the television as the seal of the office of the President blasted on all the screens. “My fellow Americans, it is with great dismay that after nearly a month of grounded air travel across these great United States, because of a dispute over many complex issues, I am forced to use the power legislated to the executive branch by various emergency statutes, that I am announcing the immediate federalization of pilots and ground crews. Effective immediately, they will have a forty eight hour cooling off period before I am ordering them, as federal employees, to return to work or be dismissed. Also, their demands for higher pay and better benefits will be met in part by the conditions of Federal employment. I will be going to Congress, in the morning, to seek long term funding for our new national employees to secure their jobs for a long while. Any deviation from this will have significant physical consequences...”
The TV trailed off as representatives from the ground crews burst into the room in a ruckus, “Long term employment my ass! That jackass knows this is a bandaid – there's no way Congress is gunna pay us, in ninety days, we're as good as fired, begging for our old jobs with no retirement and no Unions.” Ground Crew Union Head Reggie Weston flipped off the TV. “I say, we sit on the damn runways after forty eight hours! You're with us, right? Can I get a yes yes?”
“And here we heard you were about to sell us out and now you're all about it huh?” Leo grumbled. “It was nothing like that. I swear. You know how much talk flies.” Reggie looked offended.
“I'm with Reggie, this is unbelievable, just like that our retirement plan, what? Probably gone? We're not employees anymore afterall. Forced to work – basically at gunpoint now. No. No. No.” I said. “Fred?” Leo prodded.
Fred stood there scratching his scalp in dismay and despair then he straightened himself up, took a drag off his smoke, and turned to us, “Tell all folks, we're going to war.”
We were a bit concerned some of the locals might pull off on the eve of the forty eight hour period but when the forty ninth came, they were steadfast and when they fired us, and then the cops came in, we were ready, both in the courts, and on the lines. On day four, ninety six hours after the announcement, the picket lines were more like trenches, and the pilot's lounge a war room. Each airport was a mini Battle of Blair Mountain. I had my arm wrapped up in an ice pack from a rubber bullet ricochet while Leo was still furiously blinking out yesterday's pepper spray. Fred hadn't been back from the riot on the runways.
Rocks, molotov cocktails scorch marks, and burned out tear gas canisters dotted the parking lots and tarmacs. Overturned vending machines, kiosks, and stacked chairs and tables from the food courts barricaded the concourses. A fire started in one of the hangers and it only just now started to burn itself out. They cut the power and we sweltered in that Midwest heat as we quickly discovered how poorly insulating all of the windows actually were. We had a few generators but they were being used to run the CCTV cameras which we connected to some of the TVs in the pilot's lounge so we could see which direction the next charge was coming from and send out warnings.
On the fifth day an injunction had been filed and granted against the entire federalization and the cops withdrew to their side of the no man's land. It wasn't a moment too soon as we the pilots and the ground crews were nearly depleted.
It was early that morning as the leadership started to gather in the pilot's lounge that we got our first of several mortifying discoveries.
Reggie held a flashlight to his bruised face as he announced, “We lost contact with our brothers at LAX and Denver International.”
“How? Why? Did they surrender?”
“I don't know about LAX but I got this out of Denver.” Reggie played a video on his phone. It was poorly lit and unsteady but in the dark of the early morning you could make out the sound and outline of two large transport helicopters. As they hovered for a landing, someone out of the frame shone a large flashlight against the side. The helicopters were civilian in design and bore the shield of a notorious private military contractor – the Blackdogs. Some one else shouts “get ready!” as black tactical troops streamed out of the choppers and the video abruptly ends.
“Oh my god!” I exclaimed, “They're gunna try to Pinkerton us.”
“What about the damn injunction?” Leo stormed.
“It's an injunction on the feds, the cops. These are private operators. I'm assuming that they're bought and paid for by Industry.”
“You think they're gunna kill us?” Leo pondered.
It was then, the for the first time, during all of this, even after taking that rubber bullet, that I felt real fear and real uncertainty about the outcome and justness of all of it. It was the first time I considered blinking. Then it got worse.
There was a commotion at the door as some of the ground crew and pilots pulled in a makeshift stretcher with Fred laying on it.
“Oh my God, what did they do to him?” Leo exclaimed as he came to help pull him into the room. There was too many people around to see Fred clearly, something like a towel was covering most his face and head. Fred could barely speak and was clearly in some kind of distress. My thought was tear gas but none had been fired for hours and usually someone inundated with it start everyone off into similar distress.
The crowd broke as I huddled in, I shown my flashlight around him to see.
“Pull it off, pull it off, they have to see” Fred gasped.
Some of the ground crew members pulled off the towel and I could plainly see Fred's face and head – what was left of it anyway. I staggered back a step.
“It's the Blight, guys, half of the ground crew, they look like this, now!” Fred yelled. “I can't, I can't feel any of it and I can't see!”
His eyes were whited out like he had severe cataracts and his head, most of his face, and arms were encrusted in bulging, asymmetric, blotches, lesions, and black marks of various sizes and textures. It looked like he had been horribly burned.
“Hey, guys!” Reggie barked out over the shock and attempts to help Fred. “Cameras are down!”
“Well when the shit did that happen?” Leo exploded as he buzzed around the jerry rigged monitors hoping to get signal back.
I picked up my radio and asked everyone to report in, the south, east, and west reported but the north was just static.
Leo tried to rally some of the guys helping Frank to head to the north but they and Fred protested saying there weren't enough guys without the Blight to go stop a push if there was one. Everyone was silent just a moment and in that moment we heard the sound of some thirty guns cocking just outside of the pilot's lounge door.
“Fred Little, Leo Jones, and Mark Debs, step out of the lounge slowly and peacefully, we wish to negotiate the end of this.”
“Fred is incapacitated,” I yelled back with a dry mouth, “Reggie Weston of the Ground Crew Union, Leo and I stepping down. Don't shoot.” I said sheepishly.
Leo and Reggie looked to me to push open the door as I did I was immediately blinded by the tactical lights of some twenty or so submachine guns.
The same voice came again, “keep stepping through the lights, that's it, nice and slow, no one is going to hurt you. I just want to talk and show you something.”
Leo and I made it past the lights into a glare lit spot of the terminal where the commander of this platoon of Blackdogs with his two personal retinue stood with their helmets off, “I'm commander Don Doughty. I'm here on behalf of country and I would like to share something with you.”
“Commander, with all due respect, there's an injunction in place.”
“I know, that's why this is a private operation, not a military or police one.”
“Look, we don't have to go with you.”
“Look, you do. Now I'm going to level with both of you. We stormed the other airports today, you probably heard, a lot of my company men are hurt, a few near death, but we know you're not holding out. We know most of you have the Blight now and that's why we're here.”
“Why you're here, huh? No dedicated medical personnel, no biohazard suits? Kind of strange for what you're saying is a mission of medical mercy for a disease of unknown origin?” Leo perked up.
“It's not unknown. In fact, it's one of the most common diseases around. What is still unknown is if I have to drag you to what I want to show you or if you'll come willingly.”
Leo and I looked at each other and then back at Don. He was disarming and rational, something I hardly expected but he also had our number and between the Blight and the willingness of the government to now literally put guns to our heads to go back to work, I had so many questions and he was offering the answers. Leo and I went willing. We stepped out of the terminal and took a motorized cart to the fuel hangers as Don requested.
On the cart, Don started to open up, “Leo, Mark, tell me what you know about chemtrails.”
Leo scoffed while I replied, “chemtrails, yeah, I've some whacko come up to me in a few bars shouting in my ear about how as a pilot I am unwittingly spraying geo-engineering materials to change the Earth or make global warming real or spreading COVID or nerve gas in contrails. The kookiness seems to change by season. Why?”
“Next question. Do either of you know what CFC's are?”
Leo piped up, “Chloroflorocarbons, I think. They used to be used in fridges and spray cans before they were banned in the 80's – virtually globally because they were screwing up the ozone layer.”
We arrived at the hanger where the fuel was stored. Another small group of Blackdog troopers had one of the ground crew members in detention near the partially open sliding door. His badge was gone but I recognized the ground crew member as part of the fuel truck lead team.
“What does this have to do with anything?” I asked. As we all were led into the hanger where the fuel trucks were stored.
Don, out of no where saluted the fuel truck leader. To my astonishment, the fuel truck leader saluted back. They shared a “semper fi – once a marine – always a marine!” and then Don beckoned him, “show them, it's okay, show them what you know, show them what you do.”
The fuel trucker turn a spigot on the back of the fuel truck nearest to him and splashed some jet fuel from the truck on the hanger floor and then shone a UV flashlight on it and the truck without any change. He muttered out, “Ordinary jet fuel.” Then, turning to the truck adjacent to him, he shone the same uv light and there was a square code marking that appeared on the back of the truck. He turned the spigot on that truck, splashed out a bit of the fuel and then shone the light on it. The fuel reflected back a dazzling brilliant display of glow as it flowed across the concrete. “Not so ordinary jet fuel.”
“Now you see gentlemen, for the past fifty years or so, we've known that CFCs were impacting the ozone layer and created a hole, you were told, like everyone else, that the hole was healing and mostly fixed after we banned CFC's and other substances. Well, in truth, that's only partially correct, its healing or mostly fixed because we fixed it, or more accurately, because the great people who work in the sky and ground, by sheer volume of air travel across the world, had been burning this modified fuel, depositing its unique chemical composition into the atmosphere at altitude to keep that ozone hole closed or at least as protective as possible. Without it, well, look at your boss, look at the fields of crops failing across the country, look at the hospitals around the country filling up with ionizing radiation burn and cancer victims. Without you, there's holes in the ozone breaking open all over the North American continent.”
“We really have been spraying chemtrails this whole time.” Reggie murmured.
“Now, let me explain to you how this is going to work – as we speak, other Blackdogs, funded by the Federal government, are infiltrating every airport in the country and showing the rest of your leadership the same thing you just saw. We're also showing this to Industry. We're getting you the Mediator's deal. You'll have your old jobs back, and while a handful of you will go to jail for the rioting, none of you will be convicted of felonies or serve time. That's the deal. All you have to say is yes and tell everyone to go back to work now and then, with you all back in the air and back on the ground, the Blight will end.
In the end we went back to work, we took the deal. If you can call it a deal. It wasn't a deal but essentially a reboot with a cost of living increase. The other option was that some of us would be imprisoned, fined, be out of a job and oh yes, Leo, Reggie, and I shot on spot.
We were sworn to secrecy over the truth about the ozone layer and chemtrails but I'm breaking it. I'm breaking it because you deserve the truth. I know that this will end up in the internet gutter realm of aliens and bigfoot but I don't care. I'm big guy, a big name, and if anything happens to me, like an “accident”, I'm pretty sure that would only lend credence to what I've told you here.
Happy landings.

2023.06.08 00:23 sonofabutch Smoked out tonight, so let's remember a forgotten Yankee: Tom "Smoke" Sturdivant

The 1950s Yankee dynasty had some great hitters -- Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Moose Skowron, Hank Bauer, Gil McDougald, just to name a few -- but the key to going to eight World Series between 1950 and 1959 (and winning six of them) was a pitching staff that led the league in ERA in five of those 10 seasons -- and in the top three in all 10!
Whitey Ford was the ace of the staff, going an unbelievable 121-50 (.708 W%) with a 2.66 ERA (140 ERA+) between 1950 and 1959. And that was with Casey Stengel often skipping Ford against weaker teams to save him for tougher match-ups, meaning that most of those wins came against top competition. In 1956, for example, the Chairman of the Board had 10 starts against teams with losing records, and 20 starts against teams with records of .500 or better. He went 7-1 with a 2.27 ERA against the losers, and 12-5 with a 2.59 ERA against the winners!
But behind Ford were some pretty good if less famous pitchers, including Allie Reynolds, Eddie Lopat, Tommy Byrne, and Bob Grim. And another, even lesser known hurler won two rings as a key member of the Yankee rotation: Tom Sturdivant.
A hard enough thrower in his youth that he got the nickname "Smoke," by the time Sturdivant reached the Yankees he was called "Snake" because of the way his pitches moved. He threw a curve that broke away from right-handed batters, a screwball that broke away from lefties, a sinking fastball, and a looping change-up. All were good pitches, but none of them was great. Ted Williams was asked how Sturdivant was so successful without overpowering stuff, and he replied:
"Maybe he hasn’t got a thing. But I notice one thing. He keeps winning."
Eventually he did find a thing, though. Particularly later in his career, Sturdivant became known for his knuckleball. He would call it his "money pitch." He also complained about the pitch like an unruly pet, saying "it just won't act right 'til late in the season."
Born in Gordon, Kansas, on April 28, 1930, Thomas Virgil Sturdivant grew up in Oklahoma City and attended Capitol Hill High School. Sturdivant was signed by Yankee scout Tom Greenwade, who also signed another kid from Oklahoma, Mickey Mantle. Like Mantle, Sturdivant was signed as an infielder. But Sturdivant also was a pretty good pitcher as a teenager, as Greenwade told a reporter:
"Used to be a high-school pitcher in Oklahoma City, you know. And one of the greatest. He set some kind of record. More than 100 innings without being scored on."
Sturdivant struggled to hit his first few seasons as an infielder in the minors, hitting .246 in 281 at-bats in 1950. He then spent all of 1951 and much of 1952 in the U.S. Army, and -- as happened to most major leaguers drafted into the service -- spent most of his time playing baseball for a base team. (As Whitey Ford once said: "Army life was rough. Would you believe it, they actually wanted me to pitch three times a week!") Sturdivant's success pitching in the Army, as well as a leg injury that cost him some of his running speed, convinced him he should ask the Yankees to try him at pitching.
"I knew I wasn't getting anywhere, batting .246 in Class B, so I decided I'd better try something else if I wanted to stay in baseball, which I did, badly."
He returned from the Army in time to pitch 86 innings with the Yankees' Double-A affiliate, the Beaumont Roughnecks, and went 3-3 with a 3.56 ERA. His days as an infielder were over.
Sturdivant went 10-7 with a 2.98 ERA in Double-A the following season, and 8-9 with a 3.57 ERA in Triple-A the year after that. Yankee pitcher Allie Reynolds, a fellow graduate of Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City who had gone 20-8 for the Yankees in 1952, had retired after the 1954 season. That winter, he worked with Sturdivant and told him he might make the Yankees in spring. Sturdivant's hard work that off-season impressed manager Casey Stengel. "We learned that he can be a fighter, and that's what we want with this club," he said.
He made the team out of spring training and made his major league debut on April 14 against the Red Sox at Fenway Park -- Boston's home opener. Bob Grim started the game and was bombed for five runs on seven hits through six innings. Sturdivant entered the game in the 7th, with the score 5-2, and gave up another run. The Yankees battled back in the bottom of the 8th, scoring two runs on back-to-back singles from Elston Howard and Jerry Coleman to make it a two-run game, but Sturdivant gave up a two-run single in the 8th to pitcher Ellis Kinder to put the game out of reach again, and the Yankees lost, 8-4.
In 33 games that year, Sturdivant posted a 3.16 ERA and a 1.302 WHIP, not bad for a rookie. He didn't give up a lot of hits, but he did walk 41 men in 68.1 innings. Stengel didn't mind that, though. In a 2020 article, "Big Walkers", Bill James wrote about how Stengel employed a strategy of "pitching around" power hitters. When a slugger was at the plate, pitchers were coached to work the edges of the plate, not giving him anything good to hit. He might chase pitches and strike out... he might hit something off the end of the bat... or he might walk. Any of the three, in Stengel's opinion, was a better outcome than throwing a pitch down the middle to a guy who could hit it 450 feet.
As a result, the Yankees often were near the top in walks allowed -- but also in fewest home runs allowed. And also in double plays. And also, not coincidentally, in earned run average.
In his five seasons with the Yankees, Sturdivant walked 221 batters in 524.1 innings (3.8 BB/9), but only gave up 45 home runs (0.8 H9). He also induced 44 double plays. James, in looking at what made the Yankees successful in the 1950s, discovered that they had a huge differential in HR-GIDP. In 1955, Sturdivant's first year in the league, the Yankees hit 175 home runs, and grounded into 101 double plays (+74). Yankee opponents had 108 home runs, and grounded in 145 double plays (-37). In 1956, the Yankes were +86, their opponents -53.
James wrote:
This is not a typical championship team pattern. In many areas, the 1950s Yankees were just an ordinary team. They really had only one outstanding starting pitcher, while Cleveland usually had three or four. But the Yankees huge advantages in Home Runs vs. Double Plays enabled them to win almost every year.
Sturdivant rode this strategy to back-to-back 16-win seasons, going 16-8 with a 3.30 ERA (118 ERA+) in 1956, and 16-6 with a 2.54 ERA (142 ERA+) in 1957.
After those two great seasons, though, Sturdivant's career went up in... well... smoke.
In Spring Training 1958, he held out for a raise, eventually signing for $18,000, a $4,000 raise from what he'd made the year before. He gave up 10 runs in his first two starts of the year, and then missed a month with a sore arm. When he came back, he was hit hard in his next three starts, and was banished to the bullpen. After a pretty good month (8.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 7 K), he was put back into the rotation, and went 3-2 with a 3.31 ERA in 32.2 innings, but his arm still wasn't quite right, and he missed some time in August due to a heel injury. He was on the World Series roster in 1958, but didn't pitch.
All off season there were rumors that Sturdivant was on the trading block, and after another slow start -- 0-2 with a 4.97 ERA, and still bothered by his sore arm -- he was dealt to the Yankees' favorite trading partner in the late 1950s, the Kansas City Athletics. "Snake", along with Jerry Lumpe and Johnny Kucks, was dealt for Ralph Terry and previously forgotten Yankee Hector Lopez -- a pretty good deal for the Yankees, as Terry and Lopez helped the Yankees to five straight pennants and two championships between 1960 and 1964. Lumpe, a little used utility player with the Yankees, proved to be a solid regular for the Athletics and then an All-Star with the Tigers in 1964. But Kucks, an All-Star with the Yankees in 1956, was done, going 12-21 with a 4.78 ERA (84 ERA+) in two seasons with the Athletics, and was out of baseball after the 1960 season.
Sturdivant would hang around another five seasons, and pitch for six different teams! He went from the Athletics to the Senators -- not the original Senators, who were now the Twins, but the expansion team founded in 1961 that would become the Rangers in 1972 -- then the Pirates, the Tigers, back to the Athletics, and then rejoined Casey Stengel on the Mets in 1964. Over that stretch he went 21-20 with a 4.16 ERA and 1.301 WHIP as a swingman.
The 34-year-old Sturdivant announced prior to the 1964 season he was running for the Oklahoma State Senate and that he'd quit baseball if elected in November. The Mets beat him to it, though, releasing him in May after he posted a 5.97 ERA in 28.2 innings. Maybe more as a campaign ploy, in July Sturdivant signed with the Oklahoma City 89ers. He went 6-3 with a 3.89 ERA and 1.365 WHIP in 74.0 innings. He lost the election, and retired from baseball.
After that, Sturdivant owned a trucking company and tried to drum up support for the Hall of Fame case for his old mentor Allie Reynolds.
In 2000, the 69-year-old Sturdivant was in a serious car accident. Someone -- he never learned who -- found him on the roadside, thrown from his truck after it had rolled five times. When the ambulance arrived, they thought he was dead. They strapped his body to a stretcher and loaded him into an ambulance.
Sturdivant told sportswriter Brian Jensen:
"When we were driving to the hospital, I was in the back and they had me strapped down and I guess when I came to, I raised my head and I said, 'hey could y'all call my wife for me,' and the driver almost jumped out of the van. It just wasn't time for me to go."
He had broken his back, both hips, his pelvic bone, his tailbone, multiple ribs, and had a punctured lung. He never recovered.
"I don't have a life," Sturdivant said. "You know, I have a hard time remembering a lot of stuff and I'm kind of slow. I kind of have little spells where I pass out and have a hard time walking straight."
Sturdivant died on February 28, 2009.

2023.06.05 23:10 AnOkSecretary I work as a secretary at a small FBI office. A man in a pink poncho almost killed me.

[Related stories]
Today was the tipping point. For months, I've been working as a secretary at a small FBI office in Lancaster, a sleepy town on the outskirts of Los Angeles. My job as a secretary includes what you’d expect; phone calls, donut deliveries, but also a constant need to redirect old people to the police department. Believe it or not, the Bureau doesn’t care that your neighbor’s dog constantly barking. Despite the monotony, I've come to appreciate the stability of my job, something I’ve desperately needed as I approach my late twenties. But today didn’t include any of those things. Or maybe it did. That’s the problem, I can’t remember.
I arrived at the office and fired up the hissing Keurig coffee machine, and the next thing I knew, I was waking up in a daze as my boss wished me a happy weekend. This wasn't just a momentary lapse in memory induced by a boring day – no, it was a complete blackout. Poof. Gone in an instant and transported 8 hours in the future.
Strange things have been happening at the office for a while now, but they are becoming more frequent and severe. I hadn't told anyone because I knew no one would believe me. But today I’ve decided to share what’s been going on as I finally have some proof of the weird shit going on here.
After rubbing my eyes deeply from what felt like a long slumber I checked my desk for any clues about what happened. I woke my computer from sleep checking Outlook and Teams before shifting my gaze to my second monitor. That's when I saw the Word document, over 15 pages long, single-spaced. It was a detailed record of my activities, with time stamps down to the minute. The words on the page were familiar, but I couldn't remember typing them. As I read through the document, my heart raced faster with every line.
I’ve summarized the document below and omitted timestamps that seem irrelevant:
[10:45 AM] There’s an old man in a pink poncho sitting in the waiting room. I’ve asked him if he needed anything but he’s ignoring me. His eyes are glued to the wall as if he's waiting for something. Look, I’ve seen ‘California crazy’ but this is just bizarre... It’s not even raining out.
[10:50 AM] The Barley twins swung by and took an exaggerated double take in an eerie unison motion. When I asked them what was wrong, they said quote “Just checking if the smoking hot chick is back”. I told them what I’ve told them a thousand times; that my temp job replacing the old secretary is now permanent. They chuckled at my annoyance as they walked away, their eyes lingering on me a little too long. I could hear them complaining about not getting a female replacement and that I’m just not “fun”. I rolled my eyes and went back to reading my novel.
[11:03 AM] I swear the old man in the pink poncho is looking at me. In my peripheral vision, I can see his dark black eyes gazing at me. It's like he's studying me, waiting for me to make a move. But when I look up, he's back staring at the wall with an uncanny fixation. If he keeps it up, I’m going to have to ask him to leave.
[12:35 PM] The sound of a revving engine outside signaled the arrival of the FedEx driver yet again, demanding to know about 'the package'. Irritation bubbled inside me at the relentless daily visits from this delivery person. I couldn't tell if it was some twisted prank from the Barley twins or if the driver was genuinely delusional. I told her no, that we never will have a package for her, and that she’s frankly stupid for asking. She rolled her eyes, blew a bubble from her gum, and popped it before walking away.
[12:36 PM] The pink poncho man is gone.
[12:44 PM] Jenson swooped by and caught me by surprise. He had that gleeful childish smile on his face as he peered over my desk and asked “Waaaatttchhaaaaa doooinnngggg?”. I could tell he didn’t actually care but I mustered up a response.
“Uh, nothing, just cleaning out some--“.
“Hey so did you see any packages come in? Or taken? Or any with the packages at all?”
He tapped his foot nervously on the floor. Right when I was about to respond he cut me off once more, face pale and eyes twitching searching for something behind me.
“Never mind, pfff, it’s, uh, probably nothing…”
He wandered in an aimless direction behind me at a hurried pace.
[1:00 PM] I confronted the Barley twins while they were “working”. James had his feet up on his desk, lazily flipping through a magazine, while Tommy was intently focused on a game on his computer. I could feel my blood boil as I approached them. James looked up with a grin and spoke.
“Hey sweetheart, here to bring us coffee?”
"You two better stop with the whole package thing," I seethed. "Jensen blew it, his acting sucks. You know better than to take advantage of our boss’s innocence. And besides, this whole damn thing is too complicated. What's the point?"
James squinted his face in confusion. “Look man, as much as I would like to take credit for whatever bothering you, it ain’t us.”
“We’re busy with work, just like you should be.” Tommy joined and let out a playful wink.
As I glared at them both, I couldn't discern if they were telling the truth.
[1:14 PM] I caught the FedEx driver trying to sneak past my desk. She had a hoody up and obnoxious black sunglasses. I whistled at her and motioned with my hands for her to come over. She sighed at getting caught.
Before she could speak, I shouted “I don't have it, I don't want it, and I don’t want anything to do with it! Got it?"
She proceeded to flick me off. In response, I threw a pencil at her. I missed but it’s the thought that counts.
[2:32 PM] After enduring an hour-long meeting, I entered the bathroom and was hit by the putrid smell of urine and mold like a wall. I quickly scanned the three stalls, only to freeze when I saw the old man in the bright pink poncho standing in the middle one. My first thought was to leave and hold it, but my bladder had other ideas. I took the urinal to his right and did my business as fast as I could.
That's when I felt his eyes on me. I tried to ignore it and keep my eyes on my feet, but something compelled me to look up. And there he was, his eyes locked on mine slowly fixing his drooping frown to a sinister twitching grin. He pulled down his poncho hood revealing a tattoo on the side of his bald head that I couldn’t quite make out. I backed up and the man followed imitating my movement and maintaining eye contact like his head was a gyroscope. It was at this point I noticed the partially see-through poncho was in fact his only article of clothing.
I yelled “Yew dude, what the fuck?” as I lifted my hand blocking my vision. But when I could smell his wretched odor get closer, I split my fingers creating a small peephole. The man’s face was only inches away from mine with an inhuman smile that stretched to the sides of both of his eyes. His eyes consisted of only a black dot pupil slowly dilating, pearl white sclera, and no iris. His ivory teeth were sharp daggers tainted yellow and rotten dry red. He wailed nonsensical words that reverberated off the walls of the cramped bathroom.
I screamed at him to stop, hoping someone would hear me. But he just kept moving one step closer as I took a step back, his smile growing wider and wider. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest, and I knew I had to make a break for it. I frantically tore open the bathroom door, praying that he wouldn't lunge at me as I fled.
[2:38 PM] Susan from HR brought me a free T-Shirt, thanks Susan!
[2:45 PM] Security came by to get my report of the incident. As far as they can tell, it’s just another crazy homeless person. I tried to tell them there was something different about him, that his smile was unearthly but they thought I was being hyperbolic.
[3:59 PM] After making a long pitstop in the breakroom to fully decompress I returned to my desk to find a cardboard box. It lacks any address, and the cardboard is weirdly fresh without any dirt or damage. I think I’m going to open it.
And that’s it. After that point, just 1 minute after, I woke from my daze apparently. I don’t remember any of these events. I don't even know this FedEx driver that I apparently lost my cool with and allegedly knew from the prior week. And that guy in the pink poncho? I'll have to ask Dan at IT if he has access to the security tapes and get this report I submitted to security. The only evidence I have that this happened is that I’m wearing the new FBI logo embroidered shirt Susan gave to me.
I want to be clear again: I'm clean as a whistle. I haven't taken any drugs or even had a drop of alcohol. So, unless I'm developing early dementia, does anyone know how this could have happened? I appreciate any comments or insights that you may have to offer, and I'll make sure to respond to them this week. I'll also post a follow-up with any new information I come across, as well as some other stories from my past that I think you'll find interesting. Thank you for reading.

2023.06.05 17:27 StillFreeCrew The type of fan i am

Love TLOU1,Left Behind shouldn't been in the game originally not a DLC. I'm team Joel on the ending.
Don't hate TLOU2 just was disappointed in it. Wasn't mad at Joel's dying i knew it was happen before playing (wasn’t spoiled by leaks) but was mad how he died. If you know you know the whole "I'm joel and this is my brother tommy" thing and death via golf club? Really?
Definitely anti Abby. Remember when some of us thought Abby was Ellie's mom? 😂 Damn they got us with that!! But respect to her face model and voice actress no hate towards them. This is my opinion but Laura Bailey (her voice actress) shouldn't have won best performance over Ashley Johnson, Ashley put her heart into Part 1 and her heart and soul into Part 2, way harder than Laura but that's my opinion. Ellie should have killed Abby!! Wasted all that time mowing down infected and Rattlers and nearly dying just to not kill her? Remember "every last one of them"? Good times. And her fingers 😫 oh god not the fingers. And fvck all that ending the cycle of revenge crap. Can't wait for Part 3 .
And then there's the show. Probably the best video game adaptation of all time. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey wouldn't have been my choice as Joel and Ellie but they grew on me and i like that Ellie is actually played by a a teenage girl not a actress that could be her older sister. Liked what they gave us with the infected would've been cool if we saw them more though. The show also should've had more episodes. Didn't like that they changed some stuff that was in the game or didn't include it at all but understandable because the show would be too predictable. I liked how Ellie killed David in the show more than the game but Joel and Ellie reuniting and hugging in the game was way better than the shows. Still team Joel and smoking that Jerry pack. Can't wait for season 2 but at the same time dreading it because if you know you know....

2023.06.04 10:28 Mr57yl 35M - Wishing to find a friend

Hey, Im Tommy. I would like more people to talk to on the daily. Im from Queensland, Australia. Im a PC gamer. Currently playing Diablo 4 and grinding my way through the classes in iRacing. I also have a strong interest in F1 and all sorts of motor racing. I very 420 friendly. So friendly I smoke on the daily. I wouldn't mind having someone to sesh with and watch movies over discord. If you are artistic in any way, I'd love it if you shared your art with me. I havent got a creative bone in my body but I do enjoy looking at and reading other people's work.
For those that are interested in what games I play, I have compiled a short list of what games are currently installed.
PC- Diablo 4 iRacing Hell Let Loose Tarkov MW2 F122 Automobilista 2 BeamNG Assetto Corsa Assetto Corsa Competizione Horizon 5 VR VTOL - if you have this game and know how to use it, hmu. Im in need of teaching. Also, Minecraft. A staple for any gamer.
Switch - Super Smash Bro Lego Star Wars Mario Maker 2

2023.06.02 18:00 CHARMMusic Beach Fossils Album Review

"Bunny" is the newest album from indie band Beach Fossils, composed of members Dustin, Jack, and Tommy. This release offers a glimpse into the highs and lows of lead singer Dustin Payseur’s life in recent years. Payseur covers the joys of being a father, the loss of a loved one to cancer, and the simplicity of smoking out of car windows with friends.

2023.06.02 17:56 glumpoodle Day 1 Initial Impressions

I've played exactly one 9-inning exhibition game at Ego 70, but this is what I've noticed so far.
  1. Gameplay looks really smooth - are we no longer capped at 60 FPS? I didn't have afterburner on, but I found it really easy to pick up the ball compared to SMB3.
  2. Were we not supposed to see the ballpark dimensions in the game setup? I wanted to try out the new stadiums, and still had to guess at the dimensions.
  3. I actually enjoy the radio broadcasts. It'll probably get old really fast, and there should be an option to turn it off later on once I've heard every ad 1,000 times, but overall I enjoyed it.
  4. Sound effects are as awful as everyone says - maybe even worse, because I just can't tune it out. The crack of the bat is such an essential and visceral part of the baseball experience, and so while it theoretically shouldn't affect gameplay, it does. It just constantly grates on me and takes me out of the experience, even moreso when I remember how great the sound of the bat was in SMB3. Massive, massive downgrade.
  5. I got the annoying Latina ref in my very first game, and good grief I wanted to drive a spike through my eardrums. I forced myself to not mute her in the settings, because I wanted to get the full game experience to see if it got better. It didn't.
  6. I wasn't sold on Legends, and almost certainly won't include them in my franchise, but... diving with Ozzie Smith to turn a double play is something straight out of my childhood dreams.
  7. Maybe I missed it, but is there a roster preview in the team selection page in exhibition? Especially with the addition of legends, much of the appeal is based on finding which team has your favorite players from childhood... and I couldn't.
  8. That said, I've looked at exactly two teams, and some of the stats for Legends seem kind of... questionable. Which is the polite way of saying, WTF were these people smoking? I might create a separate post devoted entirely to this.

Shelton Benjamin says that Hardy is going to wish he never came back after he embarrasses him at Unforgiven. Jeff Hardy wins the championship in his first big match back in the company to end Shelton’s 10 month reign as champion.)
Kane vs Umaga w/Armando Estrada
(An angry Kane wants revenge on Umaga for costing him the Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam. The Big Red Monster challenges The Samoan Bulldozer to a match at Unforgiven, promising to unleash vengeance. Armando Estrada accepts on Umaga’s behalf and promises that he’ll destroy Kane to remain undefeated. Umaga wins thanks to a distraction from Estrada.)
WWE World Tag Team Championship:
Carlito & Chris Masters (c) vs The Highlanders vs Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch vs D-Generation X
Women’s Championship:
Lita (c) vs Trish Stratus
(Trish Stratus announces that she’s retiring at Unforgiven but wants to bow out in style in her hometown of Toronto so she calls out Lita and challenges her to one final battle. Lita accepts the challenge and says that it’ll be a privilege to beat Trish in her last match while embarrassing her in front of her own people. Trish Stratus forces Lita to submit to The Sharpshooter and wins the Women’s Championship for the last time, bowing out in style the way she dreamed. Trish receives a standing ovation from the Toronto crowd as she heads to the back.)
Ric Flair vs Randy Orton
(The Legend Killer continues attacking his former mentor after SummerSlam even despite winning because that old man just refuses to stay down when he should for his own good. An angry Flair challenges Orton to another match here, Orton accepts.)
Tables, Ladders and Chairs Match for the WWE Championship:
Edge (c) vs John Cena
(With Rob Van Dam being out of the picture, John Cena challenges Edge to put the WWE Championshipon the line against him. Cena says apart from Edge’s cowardly act at New Year’s Revolution, him and Edge are even in a one on one capacity with The Rated R Superstar winning at WrestleMania and Cena winning at Backlash. Edge says that he’ll accept as long as it’s all on his terms meaning he gets to pick when it happens and also gets to pick the stipulation which Cena says is fine. Edge says it’s going to be at Unforgiven in his hometown of Toronto. The match? A match he made famous… Tables, Ladders and Chairs! Cena vows to shut Edge up and regain top spot on Raw, even if it means beating Edge in his type of environment. During the match, Lita interferes but she receives an FU from John Cena. Edge meanwhile sneaks up the ladder but Cena climbs up and gets to him on time, delivers an FU to Edge through two tables and retrieves the WWE Championship! Unforgiven draws to a close with John Cena back on top.)
Notes:
(Trish Stratus vacates the Women’s Championship the night after Unforgiven and thanks the fans who give her an unbelievable ovation with Thank You Trish chants.)
(John Cena beats Edge in a rematch on the Raw after Unforgiven in a Steel Cage match despite Edge recruiting Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch because DX even the numbers.)
(Edge hosts The Cutting Edge and forms an alliance with Randy Orton. Rated-RKO is born!)
(Sabu returns and wins the ECW Championship against The Sandman.)

Gregory Helms (c) vs Super Crazy
WWE Tag Team Championship:
Paul London & Brian Kendrick (c) vs The Pitbulls
Submission Match for the United States Championship:
Chris Benoit (c) vs William Regal
I Quit Match:
Rey Mysterio vs Chavo Guerrero
(Rey Mysterio demands answers and wants to know why on earth has Chavo Guerrero turned his back on him. Chavo says it’s really an easy thing to explain. He says that Rey was leeching off Eddie’s name when it should’ve been him and it makes him feel sick to his stomach. Chavo says he’s better than Rey and Eddie was too. Rey says all he did was honour his friend and win the title his late friend also earned before passing away and all Chavo is doing is spitting in the face of people like Eddie by taking his dedication of being World Champion away from him. Chavo challenges Rey to a match at No Mercy to prove he’s better than him. Rey accepts and the stakes are upped when Teddy Long announces it’ll be an I Quit Match. During the match, Chavo injures Rey’s knee and does so much damage with a steel chair to the point Rey has no choice but to say I Quit.)
The Undertaker vs Mr.Kennedy
(Mr.Kennedy wants to make a name for himself so he calls out The Undertaker although gets ignored by The Deadman. Kennedy takes matters into his own hands and attacks The Undertaker on an episode of SmackDown during a match against Finlay and finally draws his attention. Kennedy says The Undertaker no longer ignoring him is what he wants and demands a match at No Mercy. The Undertaker accepts and tells Kennedy he’s tried him so now he’ll make him famous and also tells him that he’s just dug an unnecessary grave for himself. The Undertaker is about to win until a debuting MVP provides a distraction to the referee. This allows Kennedy to smash Taker over the head with a chair before pinning him to escape with the victory.)
World Heavyweight Championship:
Booker T (c) w/Sharmell vs Bobby Lashley vs Batista
(Batista and Bobby Lashley face in a SummerSlam rematch on SmackDown but this time to determine the #1 Contender for the World Heavyweight Championship. Booker T interferes, attacks both men and causes a no contest thinking it’ll mean he doesn’t have to face either man. Teddy Long however has news for Booker T and tells him his tactics have backfired because at No Mercy, he’ll be facing both men! Booker T is furious but Teddy Long tells him it’s his no one’s fault but his own. Booker T accuses Teddy of abusing power but says he’ll retain because he’s the best on SmackDown, Bobby Lashley says this is the opportunity he’s wanted and promises to take the chance with both hands. Batista says he never lost the World Heavyweight Championship and promises that it’s only a matter of time before he’s once again the top dog on SmackDown. Finlay interferes during the match and smashes Bobby Lashley over the head with his Shillelagh. This allows Booker T to capitalise and pin Lashley to retain his World Heavyweight Championship. After the match, Batista delivers a Batista Bomb to the World Champion and signals this is far from over as No Mercy draws to a close.)
Cyber Sunday 2006 (Raw)
Date: 5/11/06
Location: U.S. Bank Arena, Cincinnati, Ohio
Cryme Tyme vs Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch
Carlito vs Chris Masters
(Chris Masters turns on Carlito after they lose their tag team title rematch against DX. This turns Carlito face in the process. Carlito says what Masters done wasn’t cool but what will be cool is him kicking his ass and beating him right in the middle of the ring. Masters says Carlito was the weak link of the group who he protected for months.)
Two-out-of-Three Falls Match for the Intercontinental Championship:
Jeff Hardy (c) vs Shelton Benjamin (2-0)
Vacant Women’s Championship:
Mickie James vs Lita
WWE World Tag Team Championship:
D-Generation X (c) vs Rated-RKO (By Disqualification)
(Edge and Randy Orton after forming an alliance immediately set their sights on the World Tag Team Championship . Edge says DX are nothing but a disease who are the reason he isn’t the WWE Champion meanwhile Randy Orton says Shawn Michaels is a legend he’s yet to take care of and he’s never forgotten about or gotten over Triple H turning his back on him when they were in Evolution together. DX say Edge and Orton are without doubt two of the biggest cry baby bitches in the whole company and will take nothing but pride punching their teeth down their throats at Cyber Sunday. DX are about to win after Triple H Pedigrees Randy Orton but Edge smashes The Game over the head with a chair which causes a disqualification. Edge and Orton attack DX with chairs and leave them in a bloody mess.)
Loser Leaves Raw Match:
Kane vs Umaga w/Armando Estrada
(Umaga wins clean to close out the feud and send Kane to SmackDown.)
Falls Count Anywhere Match for the WWE Championship:
John Cena (c) vs Rob Van Dam
(Rob Van Dam returns from suspension and asks John Cena for his one on one rematch. Cena says not only is he a fighting champion but he also has a point to prove seeing as Van Dam beat him at One Night Stand and their match at Vengeance didn’t have a clear winner so he accepts. Van Dam offers Cena to up the stakes further by making their match a Falls Count Anywhere Match and Cena accepts. John Cena retains after delivering an FU to Van Dam through 2 tables and redeems his loss from ECW One Night Stand. Both men shake hands after the match to close out the feud.)
Notes:
(Rey Mysterio goes away to have knee surgery and is out for the foreseeable.)

Survivor Series 2006

Location: Wachovia Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
United States Championship:
Chris Benoit (c) vs Chavo Guerrero
(After beating Rey Mysterio, Chavo Guerrero says he’s restored pride and dignity back into the Guerrero name. Chavo is interrupted by Chris Benoit, a man Chavo thinks will be on his side. Benoit however tells Chavo that if he thinks he’s on his side after what he did to Rey Mysterio then he’s sorely mistaken. He tells Chavo what he did to Rey was disgusting, not what Eddie would want and Chavo is doing nothing but living in Eddie’s shadow. This enrages Chavo to the point he attacks Benoit and demands a match for the United States Championship so he can take something from him too like he did Rey Mysterio when he cost him the World Heavyweight Championship. Benoit retains after Chavo submits to The Crossface.)
Intercontinental Championship:
Jeff Hardy (c) vs Shelton Benjamin vs Johnny Nitro w/Melina vs Carlito
Title vs Career Match for the Women’s Championship:
Lita (c) vs Mickie James
(Lita says Trish Stratus retiring is hilarious and jokingly says if she loses to Mickie James at Survivor Series, she’ll retire. Mickie then dares Lita to actually put her career on the line against her at Survivor Series. Lita says she’s that confident seeing as she’s beating Mickie twice already that she accepts. Mickie James finally beats Lita to win the Women’s Championship and ends Lita’s career. Lita leaves to a chorus of boos and gets taunted by the crowd with goodbye chants. Cryme Tyme do NOT sl*t shame her.)
Cruiserweight Championship:
Gregory Helms (c) vs Jimmy Wang Yang
World Heavyweight Championship:
Booker T (c) w/Sharmell vs Batista
(Batista says that he can’t stand Booker T and wants to face him one on one at Survivor Series. Booker T says no and has nothing to prove but Teddy Long grants Batista his wish after making a case that Batista hasn’t had his one on one rematch for the title he never lost. Booker T is furious and Batista tells him his days as World Heavyweight Champion are numbered since he’s never lost a singles match for a title. Booker T tries heel tactics and Sharmell tries to help too but their tactics backfire, Batista is prepared and counters, delivers a Batista Bomb and pins Booker T to win the World Heavyweight Championship.)
Survivor Series Tag Team Match:
Team SmackDown (The Undertaker, Kane, Bobby Lashley, Mr.Kennedy & MVP) vs Team ECW (Sabu, Rob Van Dam, Tommy Dreamer, CM Punk & The Big Show) vs Team Raw (John Cena, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Randy Orton & Edge)
(Paul Heyman says that ECW invaded Raw and SmackDown because he wants to establish the fact that ECW is well and truly back and can hang in the big leagues, even if it means causing a war. Teams are filled with men who can’t stand each other and this night is all about if they can get along and win for their brand. There’s plenty of chaos and fighting amongst the teams since Cena & DX hate Orton & Edge, Taker & Kane hate MVP & Kennedy, Sabu hates Dreamer. The match comes down to Rob Van Dam and Edge. Van Dam has the upper hand until Randy Orton RKO’s him and his partner Edge capitalises to win this match for Team Raw in a very fun and chaotic affair.)
(Sole Survivor: Edge)
December to Dismember 2006 (ECW)

Armageddon 2006 (SmackDown)
Date: 17/12/06
Location: Richmond Coliseum, Richmond, Virginia
Ladder Match for the WWE Tag Team Championship:
Paul London & Brian Kendrick (c) vs MNM vs Finlay & William Regal vs The Hardy Boyz
(Poor Joey Mercury still gets his nose broke here.)
Cruiserweight Championship:
Gregory Helms (c) vs Jimmy Wang Yang
Bobby Lashley vs Finlay w/Little Bastard
(Bobby Lashley wants revenge on Finlay for costing him the World Heavyweight Championship at No Mercy for Theodore Long announces that they’ll face off at Armageddon. Lashley wins here and is then traded to Monday Night Raw.)
United States Championship:
Chris Benoit (c) vs Chavo Guerrero w/Vickie Guerrero
(After losing at Survivor Series, Chavo Guerrero continues to attack Chris Benoit since he can’t accept what Benoit said about him living in Eddie’s shadow. Chavo gets Vickie Guerrero involved and Vickie says to Benoit that perhaps what he’s saying is true but Chavo’s heart is in the right place. Vickie comes to her senses and slaps Chavo which helps Chris Benoit retain as he locks in The Crossface and Chavo taps.)
Kane vs MVP
No Holds Barred Match:
The Undertaker vs Mr.Kennedy
(Mr. Kennedy continues attacking The Undertaker and claims beating him wasn’t enough, he wants to finish him. Kennedy claims Taker is nothing but smoke and mirrors nowadays, has reached a point someone needs to put him down and that man is MRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR… GONG! Taker Chokeslam’s Kennedy and tells him they’ll face off at Armageddon in a No Holds Barred Match! Taker also tells Kennedy his fate will be sealed for good at Armageddon and he’s going to put an end to this for good. The Undertaker wins in a brutal affair.)
World Heavyweight Championship:
Batista (c) vs Booker T w/Sharmell
(Booker T invokes his rematch clause and promises to win back the World Heavyweight Championship. Batista says he’s just getting started when it comes to being back on top of the food chain on SmackDown and promises just like at Survivor Series, he’ll kick Booker T’s ass to end 2006 on a high. Batista retains the title even despite Sharmell’s best attempts yet again to help Booker T win the title back.)
And that’s part 43 over and done with! 2006 is officially in the history books with 2007 just around the corner. I’ll be back tomorrow for part 44 where we’ll see Triple H injure his quad again, an iconic Royal Rumble match and the biggest threat to The Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak in years. Stay safe and stay tuned!

I'll put down my roots when I'm dead
“I had a little brother. He’s dead.” Wilbur mumbled, and Phil’s heart squeezed. “I’m sorry, mate.” he said. Wilbur swallowed. “It’s fine. It was a while ago.” “How long ago, if you don't mind me asking?” Wilbur looked back at Phil. “A month.” Phil’s eyes widened. He inhaled sharply. That's not a while ago.

Endure and Survive
Short but is a mix of bedrock bros, Technodad, and Ranboo. It's short and sweet.
“You’re lyin’ to me,” the man said before Tommy could walk out the door. “Aren’t you? I know most groups scoutin’ the area around here, but none of them had a kid with them last time I checked. Unless your group’s not from around here and you 'wandered off' a bit further than anticipated—”
“Fuck off,” Tommy interrupted. “I don’t want to join your stupid group so you can stop trying to talk me into it. I’m better off on my own, anyway.” The man blinked at him, his mouth hung slightly open, but no words came out.
“I’m not part of any group. I’m on my own, too,” the man answered. “You just…you remind me of myself,” he added quietly. Tommy had to strain his ears to hear it.
Or: Tommy and Ranboo are, respectively, suffering during the apocalypse. Techno takes them under his wing.
Brain Dead in the Apocalypse
“Shush, old man. Quiet.” He hissed out, “I’m going for a… walk. I’ll find you two later. Thanks, for- uh, taking care of me, I guess? But also you overstepped my boundaries, like by a thousand times. So I’d appreciate it if you fucked off.” He crossed his arms, letting his bat lean against his leg as he leveled them all with a glare.
“You liked it when I was carrying you—“ Techno, like the fucking bitch he was, decided to throw onto the table. His lips pulled up into a smug smile as Tommy recoiled backwards, feeling his cheeks flush.
“Y-you’ve got it wrong! I fucking hate you, and Phil! The only reason I've stuck around this long is to grace the two of you with my company! I take it all back, neither of you are my idols and I hate you fucking bitches and I never want to see your ugly faces again—“ Tommy rambled, his voice going a couple of pitches higher against his will. Fucking puberty.
“But you said I was your favorite?” Techno innocently asked, “You never acted like this whenever I hold you while you shiver away, clinging onto me like a little baby bird.”
Or Tommy is an infamous villain who attracts the attention of the Syndicate in the apocalypse.
BDITA is one of my top three apocalypse fics because I really don't like zombie apocalypse fics normally. I usually hate them. But BMAF Tommyinnit in a zombie apocalyptic, I at least have to give it a chance and read it.
These are the other ones that are in my top three.
Forged in Blood and Bones
Tommy was just an orphan when the fucking zombie apocalypse hits. He doesn't expect to find a family during end-times, but here we are.
I can't choose which of the two come in slot two. But I'm leading towards "Thats my kid" it's definitely one of the best and the author doesn't give themselves enough credit.
That's my Kid, That's my Sunrise
When the apocalypse started Tommy thought he was going to die the first week. Turns out he lasted longer and with a little companion with him. Or Tommy and shroud the spider but add some angst (of course fluff as well)
[Rough start btw! My writing has improved since then I swear!]
I don't feel like it has a rough start, but it's good
Tainted Love
Thomas Theseus Innit was only 5 when the zombie apocalypse started, 7 when his parents both lost their lives to the weirdly smart and athletic zombies.
Now here he was; after years of surviving on his own, wondering if his decision to go into this strangely abandoned city was a good one.
Especially since the place holds a few walkers way too sentient for his liking, and why won’t they leave him alone? Or His awakening wasn't so peaceful.
The first thing he noticed was that burning feeling that clung to his skin the moment he entered the city.
Like he was being watched.
Then he realized how dark it was. It must still be night, but the soft moonlight that acted as his only comfort was now gone, replaced by a tall shadow. Tommy was confused for a moment, until the shadow moved.
He was up in an instant, whipping around to look at the bedroom window behind him.
There, squating on the apartment buildings fire escape, was a zombie.
It was right up against the glass, rapid breath causing it to fog from its proximity.
It’s blood shot eyes staring right at him.
SBI Zombie Apocalypse AU
This is a Sleepy Bois Inc and Co Zombie Apocalypse au. Basically I write out my interpretation of events that happen in the au and we vibe. They may be a little out of character but shrugs they probably act different in an apocalypse anyway let me live.
The description for the two part series is kinda shit but the actual stories aren't bad at all and are a good read. Again typically hate any and all apocalypse stories but I can read a decent amount.
All the lonely people
Two people lost after the end of the world. One is a boy, confused and scared, missing his older brother and only guardian. The other is a man, on the edge of losing his mind. Together they find each other and find what they are missing. Family.
My favorite duo Bedrock bros, but technodad/dadnoblade version, I've read all 150 tabs of Technoblade & Tommyinnit (Video Blogging RPF) No regrets I do it every couple of weeks because there are always new ones.
Big boys don't cry (even when they should
Hack, slash, hide. Technoblade was quite an expert at this whole apocalypse thing already. It was some time already after all.
Maybe six years? At least three since he had to start gathering things by himself. But Technoblade was proud to be the Provider in his little family. Heaven’s know that Wilbur wouldn’t be able to do half the shit Techno was doing.
Or: Technoblade centric zombie au. I promise, it's a GOOD ENDING, and no, Techno does not die
Honestly no my favorite read but it's still good and could be to someone else's taste. It's just not mine.
Zombie hunting is not an approved camp activity
Building a zombie apocalypse team is hard work, they have to be ready for absolutely anything the apocalypse can throw at them.
So when the apocalypse arrived, Technoblade was displeased to discover his team consisted of himself, three 13 year olds with exactly zero life preservation skills, and a broken figurine of an obscure comic book hero lovingly named Micheal.
When a zombie eventually takes him out, he's going to fist fight whoever decided that these were fair odds.
AKA Techno is a moody teen who hates kids but there's an apocalypse and suddenly he's in charge of three of them, they are the bane of his existence but they are also so small and he would die before he lets them get hurt.
10 out of 10 would recommend. This was a nice long one shot that is absolutely worth the read and probably a reread.
Vampire/Fledgling stories
What did he think about the blood
It's a series called kind smiles accompanied by crimson eyes.
They were one family of sadistic fucks, and that warmed Phil's heart.
OR
Wilbur takes his little brother hunting for the first time.
Behind the restaurant
Tommy's Sir decided to leave him, so now he gets his own food. And so one evening, Past the place where he usually steals from people, a strange looking rich pink-haired man walks, This is Tommy's best chance to earn his own food in weeks.
Or Tommy lives on the street and steals from everyone he sees, until he stumbles upon a rich vampire who seems to know where his Sire is.
Short and sweet story that I recommend if you're looking for a quick read.
I'll send my best regards
It's a 3 part series that I also highly recommend.
New Child Acquired
The Land of His Brothers
Tommy held his breath, his eyes squeezing shut. His feet were placed back on the ground, the hand loosed on his neck, hovering there, barely touching...
He opened his eyes, and looked up at the creature. It was staring at him, he couldn’t make out the emotion on its human-like face. Its golden eyes glistened, piercing, as they met eye to eye.
Finally, after a long moment it spoke, “Hullo.”
Or
There's a lack of Vampire fics in this Fandom and some of ya'll need some good parental figures in your lives.
The ending kinda sucks but it's an ending none the less and over all its a good read.socks.
What Are We Waiting For
“This is probably the worst cell they’ve tried to keep me in,” Tommy says out loud, mostly to himself. The other vampire at least shifts like he heard Tommy.
“I mean really, they’ve got you all chained up, but what about me? You’re big and all, but I doubt you could take me in a fight. I’m the best and biggest man out there, nothing can compare. You would really think that people would learn from their mistakes,” Tommy sighs. He pulls his knees up to his chest and sets his head on them. The humans had interrupted his sleep.
“I don’t think you could beat me in a fight,” the other vampire says after a minute, his voice sounding rough. It’s almost like he had been screaming.
“No, I definitely could. It’s not even a competition,” Tommy says, puffing his chest out. That one earns him a soft snort.
New Moon
“I need your help to kill a vampire,” He mumbles under his breath, his chest rapidly taking in air as his heart pounds in his chest, “Alright? There. Now let me go.”
Techno hums, his hands slowly unwrapping from around his neck, though one lingers. He pushes his chin up with one hand, trialing a finger down his neck with the other. Tommy shivers at the touch, being reminded that the guy in front of him is a fucking vampire.
“Who, little witch?” He croons, goosebumps running up along his arms as Techno stops at his pulse point, no doubt feeling how fast his heart was beating.
Or Tommy is a lonely witch that falls right into the hands of three waiting vampires.
It was one of the better vampire stories and a worth it read plus it's part of a series of different stories.
Soulmate-Alternate Universe
Soul Paint
Tommy remembered a time when his skin was painted with the marks of those, he knew, loved him. Until the day he realized they faded.
Exile Canon Divergence fic, where Tommy realizes the soul marks, shared with his family and friends, have disappeared. He’s convinced he’s become unlovable. His family tries to fix that.
Smoke fills the lungs
Dandelions represented rebirth, the first sign of life that sprouted after a harsh winter. So Tommy couldn't help but believe as those same petals spilled from his mouth that maybe he needed to die before he was someone worthy of love.
Or Exile BedrockBros Soulmate/Hanahaki AU
This is one of my favorite soulmate fics. It does include hanahaki in it, my guilty pleasure is Hanahaki, Major character death. Or neglected Tommyinnit fics.
I will look for you as the sun rises higher
What is your heart's true desire?
What is it that you really want?
The question was asked too often by people that the gods decided to lend an ear.
Thus, soulmates were created.
OR
MCD March prompt #15: 'Hold still' with bedrockbros
Another favorite I recommend to read. It's short and sweet.
Withered Feathers
Tommy is a crime fighting vigilante by night. By day, he's a tired café worker. He ignores the wither rose and feather on his back. It's not important, his soulmates will come when they come. He needs to focus. The Syndicate is an ever looming threat for his vigilante persona. And his life outside of it is complicated as a nearing-adult pretending to be almost 20.
This story definitely could have put more focus on the soulmate aspect and be more descriptive in my opinion but it's not a bad read.
You're on your own kid )you always have been)
6,000 words and absolutely one of my if not my favorite bedrockbros soulmate fics. It's a good read and I've reread it a million times.
Branded Hearts and Golden Anchors
Everyone had at least one soulmate in Tommy’s world and everyone, par a select few, yearned for the day that words would begin to appear across their body, showing just what their soulmate thought of them, after all it showed only if it was utterly and completely true in their heart. It was how you knew you had met them because nobody could form a proper opinion of someone they had never met, right?
Yet maybe some could.
When Tommy was born, pink and screaming, a singular word scrawled across his heart, it’s ink black and damning with promise.
Mine.
OR: A possessive SBI soulmate AU
It gets dark towards the end, like real dark but not exactly dead dove do not eat. But in my opinion if you're more sensitive you might think that should be a tag.
As God Looks On in Abject Apathy
Technoblade was the blood god, he had no need for a soulmate. He fought and he killed without discrimination, he was something unholy, something monstrous, something made from blood. He had no need for weakness, for a soulmate.
Tommy dies on the battlefield. He dies young and bloody, with no soulmark, no soulmate.
Another favorite probably equal or more of a favorite than "you're on your own (you always have been)" highly recommend.
I Loved You Like The Sun
It had been hard, at first. To accept that they wanted him.
That he wanted him.
But they would wait as long as it took.
Tommy was theirs after all.
Or
(Platonic) SoulmateAu with AngelDuo fluff.
Oh, and TwinsDuo are there.
And it's a FosterAu.
It's so cute and is about angel duo and I just can't help but like it.
Brave face, talk so lightly, hide the truth
Tommy's never been real big on the whole soulmate thing, if he does have a soulmate they're probably not a huge fan of him due to the times he gets punched in the face or runs into tables. What he doesn't expect is his foster-brother, Wilbur, to be his soulmate.
Tommy’s eyes land on Wilbur, “Your soulmate is probably being abused.”
Tommy gets to watch the blood run out of Wilbur’s face, and how he goes deathly pale in about five seconds.
“Huh?” Wilbur whispers.
Crimeboys soulmate au + foster au. This is another favorite duo of mine, although nothing compares to my addiction for bedrockbros. Highly recommend but trigger warning includes talks of abuse and bullying.
Please don't fine me (I'm not ok)
Tommy does not breathe and he does not laugh and he does not swear. Tommy is not the harsh cry of a fledgling eagle soaring over the brisk mountain tops. Tommy is not the wind teasing the tall aspen, Tommy is not the babbling brook in the morning sun. Tommy is not life itself and he is not nothing at once.
Or at least, not anymore.
or: a c!bedrock bros hanahaki soulmate au with plenty of allium duo fluff as well <3
Has my top two favourite duos. Also this story has a special place in my heart always making me eye water. No I don't cry over stories! You're crying over stories!
Building Bonds
Tommy had been in the foster system since he was six, and every family he had been placed with since then turned him away within a couple months for being a "problem child". The only thing that had kept him going was the pale yellow band around his wrist and the bond that was connected to it.
Only, he hadn’t seen his soulmate in over two years and now he was standing in front of a new house, once again preparing to be thrown out within the month.
A little bedrock, a little angel duo, and lots of past trauma for Tommy. This is crime boy soulmate+foster au. Tommy and Wilbur are separated as Wilbur aged out of the system.
To Be Hesitant of Acceptence
Hey Tommy," he said, cheerfully. "Clocking in, big man?" he tilts his head, offering a smile.

"Yep, you clocking out, boss man?" he hiked his bag higher on his shoulder.

"Yep. Was gonna work overtime but my schedule changed at school again. Wil should be here though if you wanna bother him."

"Oooh, I might." He started to walk back to the employee area before he turned on his heels. "Tell Boob Boy and Yellowed that we still gotta do the thing."

Tubbo rolled his eyes. "Very specific, Tommy. And I will."

Or Tommy works in a store in a world where everyone has soulmate identifying marks at 18. Follow this short journey where he finds his soulmates and his reaction. Bad summary, but I promise the fic is good.
Classic Tommy being iffy about soulmates ans running away when he meets his soulmate. The amout of soulmate au, where he doesnt think he deserves one, has one, or doesn't want one is in so many fics
Paint me in colors (I can no longer see)
It was expected, everyone had soul mates and every one of them left a mark the first time they touched you. A brush of color to remind you that you are loved and loved back. It was human. Tommy loved without restraint and by the tender age of ten he had the habit of marking everyone he touched, and they stuck.
This is an angsty story. That all I have to say
I saw you on the train last night (and I just walked on by)
Platonic Soulmate AU CrimeBoys Edition
Wilbur soot is stuck in a time loop. The only way out of it is to find his “soulmate”.
Well, Wilbur doesn’t believe in soulmates.
TLDR: Time loop shenanigans with Wilbur Soot
I personally usually hate timeloop stories, but I make an exception for soulmate timeloops. Good read definitely recommend it. Crime boys soulmates au.
Forged in Love
"So don’t fucking underestimate me, Blade. Adults tend to forget that kids don’t exactly have strong morals to get what they want.” Techno stared down into the baby blue eyes, a familiar spark of thrill reaching his heart, the same spark he felt when he first met Phil.
“I doubt you have an extra mending book laying around.” Are you truly worthy of my curiosity?
“I actually do, prick.” Fuck. You.

Tommy may seem harmless at first glance, but Phil and Techno know otherwise. To be a gemsmith, a person who connects soulmates, is not a profession for those who are docile.
But Tommy is intriguing at first glance. Always talking, always moving, always challenging them. So they stick around. Not too long though, they have two other soulmates to find, but long enough to develop their relationship beyond customer and shopkeeper.
If only they realized why they were developing this relationship in the first place before the Hunters came knocking on Tommy’s shop.
Or
Local child is snarky enough to catch two war General’s attention and it escalating from there
This is one of my favorite longer soulmate stories and a very good read. I highly recommend it and on my opinion it's one of the better multi-chapter soulmate stories. Not better than "As God Looks On in Abject Apathy" in my opinion.
My Bond and My Enemy
Tommy is ready to visit the city on his own, without his coven following him. It's been five years since he's turned, so he thinks it's only fair. It's during this outing that he meets Technoblade.

OR
Soulmate AU, based on the prompt (SPOILERS) "Platonic soul mates except its a vampire who finds out their soul mate is either a Werewolf or vampire hunter" by bberry
A good read, short yet with a decent amount of words. Good choice if your looking for a quick read that's not a oneshot.
The chances for meeting your soulmate are slim but never zero
Tommy had three soulmates. He had named them Crow, Note and Poem according to the way he can identify them. Yet why must they be so hard to find? How is he meant to not doubt fate when he was already 16 and had not found his soulmate?
——————————
Or: Tommy doubts the red string of fate, therefore fate sends him off on a trip of chance to find his soulmates in different places. Who would have known an arcade would be the place he’d find his first?
It's cute SBI soulmates and absolutely worth the read and I love it and it has Technoblade meeting Tommy in person. It pulls on my heartstrings because they never got to do that IRL.
Sanguine Souls
The world hates soulmates.
It’s a contradictory thing, there are very good and very valid reasons for it despite how alluring the concept of soulmates is. It must be nice. Imagine someone fated for you to trust forever, to behold, in every waking moment, with lingering thoughts and associations about happiness and goodness and everything that should be lovely in any sort of relationship between two people. It’s a beautiful concept.
Too beautiful.
Technoblade blinks. There’s a familiar sound from the television. He looks up, and he sees the familiar flash of reds and blues on the television screen with a dreadful set of words underneath it.
‘SOULMATES CONFIRMED. ONE DECEASED.’

~+~
OR Soulmate AU where An Encounter with Death is a necessary requirement, according to the laws of the universe, to confirm who your soulmate is. Technoblade and Wilbur had gotten the wrong message one time, but the world corrects that when Tommy runs into them.
OR OR Twinsduo angst to give rise to Bedrock bros until it somehow turns into Neapolitan Trio in the ending. PROMPT: soulmate wasn't who they thought they would be
Tommy is Tommy, Techno is srubborn and denying the truth. Wilbur is just... angsty with bedrockbros soulmates in the mix. Good read I recommend and this is one of my top ten soulmate recs.
Gentle people (with flowers in their hair)
In a world where soulmates existed, Tommy didn’t want anything to do with it.
When he was eight, his father left Tommy’s mother, because he didn’t really want to marry her, but the universe forced his hand.
Now, he was sixteen, and staring with wide eyes as Wilbur Soot gestured wildly, revealing flowers on his arm identical to the ones Tommy had concealed before the stream.
or, Tommy doesn't want one soulmate, never mind three
Classic Tommy not wanting a soulmate because he's tramitized by his parents being horrible soulmates and not working.
Fae
the wild hunt of old (will bring something new)
Tommy could feel his presence behind him, keeping his mouth shut as a hand reached over, grasping the hand that had him in a grip, cutting the boy off from his words, like he had stolen them from his mouth himself.
“Who did this to you Theseus?” Muted gasps were shared as the drumming and whispers were joined by the howls of the hounds.
“All of them.” He whispered sadly, eyes unable to look away from the looks of hatred and betrayal. But there was no pity for them. They had made their beds and he knew that Techno would make them lie in them.

Tommy found his home in the forest. However his treatment from his own home will be their undoing when the Fae King unleashes the Wild Hunt.
Absolutely my favorite fae fic and a top 3 fic ever my ao3 list. Possessive Technoblade is there and is a little dark but nowhere close to dead dove do not eat. I could probably recite most if not all of this story.
Follow the golden hair and sapphires that stare back
"I know how to get there, I'm not the one lost, you are." The kid exclaims and Wilbur humours him. He knows kids like to put on a brave face although this kid seems to be pretty good at it.
"Oh yeah? Well, I guess you gotta help me out huh?"
The enthusiastic nod that follows is worth it as the kid jumps around like he's got too much energy in his tiny body.
"I will, but only if you do one thing." The kid says, almost seriously as he puts up a one finger.
Wilbur crouches fully now, hands still on his knees still.

"Oh yeah and what's that?"

The kids smile turns sweet as he rocks on his heels and folds his arms behind his back.
"Can I know your name?" He asks sweetly, like a kid asking for some sweets before bed. There's a fight going on in his head. A small part saying no but the bigger says what's the harm?
It's just a kid.
"I'm Wilbur."
Or
Wilbur cuts through a park to get home. Doesn't look where he's going and then, pop, he's in the world of the fae. It's part of a fae series where Tommy tricks sbi. Good read and super worth it.
Bullied by fae
The fae scrunches his nose and huffs, "I'm gonna send you to my brother so he can bully your ass and get you into our realm, dick'ead."
Techno only hums, sliding his basket down from his arm, to his hand, "Yeah kid, send me to big brother."
Or;
Techno meets fae!Tommy. He's not really how he pictured fae to be
It's just funny and makes me smile and it's Tommy being Tommyinnit but fae. Techno being Techno. Looking for somthing short and funny this is it.
Nectar and Blood
Blade had a quiet life.
Nothing out of the ordinary happened to him – which is why it came as such a shock when a boy walked into the smithy.
Blade could feel the difference in the boy before he ever laid eyes on him. He could feel the way the already warm forge seemed to burn brighter in the presence of the creature that just stepped in.
And of course, the sight of the fae – even dressed down to fit in with the townspeople more, they stuck out like a sore thumb. The boy's hair was shaped into perfect, shining golden curls. Their eyes shone as blue as the summer skies, and even their relatively drab brown clothing was perfectly clean, free of any mud or dust from the streets.
Blade paused in his work, enough to give a polite greeting. Whether they were inside a faerie ring or not, the fae always worked by the same rules. Such rules had been imprinted into Blade’s mind before he had ever been allowed to step outside of his family's home.
Tommys good at using Technos desire and affection against him. One of the good fae fics.
