2023.03.20 22:57 annie_ergo I fucked up and now I can't find a job
I'm a soon graduating master student, no interesting projects, no experience
I did a double major in CS + a humanities subject, but at the time I wasn't really focussed in CS as I saw it as being complementary to my other degree (in which I wanted to do a PhD), and I was more interested in the theoretical side of CS (like computability & complexity theory). Therefore, I didn't really care about having hands-on experience, except a group project in data science and web development in my final year.
After taking a year out for treatment and deciding not to pursue the other subject, I got into an AI-adjacent MS programme at a good university. I know I got in just because I did my best to look good on paper and because of sheer luck.
I'm now almost at the end of a master degree and I'm currently working on my thesis.
The thing is that I feel like I'm about to graduate and nothing to show for it. All throughout my studies I've barely been keeping my head above water because of my mental illness, and as a result, I haven't been honing my programming skills or building a portfolio. I think I don't even remember much of what I'm supposed to have learned during my education. I know I should've taken time to sort myself out much earlier but it wasn't an option at the time.
I've been trying to catch up by review some previous material and taking classes on Coursera, but I don't have much time to do that as I'm also working hard on my thesis as well as another research project (which I feel is going nowhere for unrelated reasons). I don't really have the time to actually make projects either, and anyway I feel I lack so much knowledge in order to do them properly. Also, I'm still struggling with my mental illness (but I'm doing much better thanks to medication, therapy, healthy lifestyle) and that makes me less productive than I would want.
What should someone in my situation do? Do call me r-word as long as I can get actionable advice pls
ETA: I was lucky enough to be able to borrow money from relatives but I have to eventually pay it back and it makes family dynamics stressful

2023.03.20 22:49 Intallygence Review & Feedback
Probably a small Reddit community (compared to 5m users on Google play), but I still wanted to share my experience and feedback.
Don't get me wrong. This app is near perfect. I had a few pet peeves with other apps and I was pretty sure timetune was going to be "one of them". But honestly I was quite surprised.
What's perfect: - Fair. Useful features don't have to be paid for. - Scheduling alerts. Alerts can be scheduled in a combination of days + hours + minutes beforehand, allowing me to specifically tailor the alert to the time I prefer. - A superb widget (android). Allowing days of scrolling is one of the best features that even other apps did not think of. - Wide variety of colour and logo design for tags. Very nice touch to aesthetics which matters.
Though thankful for the above mentioned, I do understand timetune proactively reviews feedback and are open to suggestions. So I wanted to contribute with a few suggestions below.
Don't get me wrong, even if the app doesn't change it's already perfect, but just some future features to consider: - When configuring alerts, show the date/time the alert will be triggered. For example, if I set an alert for a 10pm task to come 1 day and 2 hours before, perhaps show the proposed alert time so users don't have to manually do the math. The logic to achieve this should be simple (coding perspective). - Incorporate blocks created in templates into "blocks" tab. Currently, blocks created in templates are not incorporated. I'm not sure if this is intentional, but "blocks" tab no longer provides a holistic view in this case. This may be an intentional omission, but do consider incorporating it. - Allow reapplying the same template as an overlap. I tried using the template feature and created multiple tasks. I applied it to one of the days and accidentally removed a task. Re-applying the same template does not recreate that ask since it has been removed accidentally. The workaround is to duplicate a template, and apply the new template, followed by removing the old one, and renaming the newly cloned template. Hopefully templates can be re-applied.
Nothing else I can think of, honestly. I read some suggestions by other users and didn't see any of my pointers repeated, so hopefully this helps. Forgive me if there are any repeats which I may have missed out.
All that said, keep up the good work. This app really helps me in managing my time and I wanted to shout-out to the developers. THANK YOU. Really, thank you.

2023.03.20 22:20 mfinan68 Do Not Buy From Taste the Luxe site
Do not order from this company.
I placed an order on 10/11/2022 for two bottles of perfume (BR540 and LDBS). I had read reviews and didn’t see any serious red flags. The order was around $340. Upon receiving the shipping notice, I discovered the package was coming from Russia. I should have canceled but I really was looking forward to the perfumes.
The package took forever to make any real movement. It seemed to bounce back and forth between locations in Russia. I messaged the company and was assured the package was fine.
Finally the package made it to the Netherlands and at the end of December 2022, it made it to customs in NY. I again messaged the company asking if there was a new tracking number. They sent a link stating the original tracking number (from Russia post) would continue to work on the USPS site. After 2 weeks stuck at customs, they said they’d resend my order - but they never provided me any shipping information for a replacement order.
The package never update beyond being received by customs. I asked the company multiple times for assistance in getting status about the package. I tried to file for post package status but couldn’t “due to its status” at customs. I sent the company a copy of the message that said i couldn’t file for a lost package and asked them to please file the package as lost. My messages began being ignored.
Around the end of February 2023, the status of the package disappeared and the USPS website simply said the package was untrackable. I reached out to the company one last time via email (because messages were being ignored) asking them for a refund and telling them that I’d file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau after one week if I didn’t hear from them. They messaged me and told me that the package had been delivered and that I had received my products. I have not received a package. I asked for the evidence they have showing my package was delivered and they couldn’t provide any.
I shouldn’t have waited because now it’s too late for me to dispute the payment to them. So it’s been a hard $340 lesson for me - learn from my experience and don’t order from this company. I have filed with the BBB.

2023.03.20 22:17 13yako Shampoos not working?
Hi,
Wondering if others having this issue/have advice on other products?
I have tried 5 or so different shampoos/brands in the past couple months and all of them are leaving my hair in some state of oily at the roots. Im trying to stick with Sulphur free products, but they just don't seem to be working well. Some look like they work a little, others don't look like they do anything. I've even tried washing twice with 2 different products in a single shower, but my hair still looks gross and stringy.
I have very fine hair, but a lot of it. It is colored from a semi-perm. dye, have only used the dye twice and most color is gone now. Hair is ~3-4ft long, very lightly wavy (in the 2's i think), used to be at least twice as long like a year ago. I usually wash it about every other day, whenever it starts looking more oily, but now I just can't seem to get it clean.
Shampoos tried include Love beauty & planet rose sandalwood(?) (this stuff is nasty, was inconsistent and goopy. Had to shake it real well to get a single consistency and leaves a lot of oil) Alba for colored hair (worked great at first, but half through the bottle it changed from clear to milky and stopped cleaning my hair) Not your mothers Manuka honey (visibly oily hair after) Hask cactus water (used the peach one before and was great but only comes in a set so got this one - this one leaves hair stringy) Terra pure hotel shampoo (figured if was good enough for a hotel it should work, and reviews good, but same issue, stringy oily hair once its dried)
I have tried showering/washing different times of day jic im sweating in sleep and causing it, but even if I wash in early afternoon and air dry, the moment I brush I can see strands of hair begin to clump together at the roots. I thought may be my brush was dirty, so used something else, but still happens. Stopped using conditioner cause I know it can weigh hair down too.
Anyone else get this/have an idea how to fix it or what products would work better? Could it be a winter thing?

2023.03.20 22:15 UncleGurm Test drove a Sebo today...
Some of you may know I've been doing a ton of research on vacuums to combat my allergies (DUST, OMG) and deal with the cat hair (2 full grown ragdolls with undercoats) on 90% hardwood (one room of carpet, two area rugs) and it's really come down to this:
- One decent stick vac per floor for daily pickups (currently have a Dyson v8, shopping for a second stick)
- One Sebo K3/E3 or Miele C3 for the weekly clean.
There are two vacuum stores within 20 minutes of here. Both carry Sebo and Miele, but one of them is the local "Miele Showroom" and the other is an old guy who LOVES SEBO. So I figured I'd hit both and get both sides of the story.
So I dropped into the Sebo showroom. First thing to note is the prices - $1100 for the E3, no exceptions no discounts. $900 for a K3. Ok, fair enough. First up was the E3.
Immediate impression - build. It's pretty light. Very maneuverable. The airbelt really sticks out. The tools are good, but not ultra premium.
Second impression - it's QUIET. Like, SO quiet. With the ET-1 turned off it's quieter than most air purifiers or dishwashers. The ET-1 of course is loud, but not glaringly so. It's about as loud as your average power head.
Third impression - the suction on the lowest setting exceeds that of a Dyson on high. I mean, duh. But it's one thing to know that intellectually and another to see it actually happen. On high it's... hard to quantify with just my hand as a measuring device, but didn't impress me overly. Like the differential between low and high was not amazing.
Fourth impression - attachments. The included parquet head is pretty lackluster - I'm sure it does the job but my cats' hair will just build up and turn into a white snowplow. So right away we'd need the premium parquet tool ($55 extra). Also would want the handheld pet tool, which is $65 plus a $15 adapter thing (or get the "pet kit" with some extra stuff for $115). And the flat upholstery tool for vacuuming mattresses. And the upgraded dusting brush. And a couple other things (reaching up high for dusting, etc.) So I'd be into this for a couple hundred bucks in accessories, maybe closer to $300. HOWEVER, the ET-1 is the standout here. It's just insanely good, hands down the best I've seen.
Fifth impression - service and warranty. The unit comes - from this dealer - with a 5 year service plan, and of course the 7/10 year warranty. Honestly that's pretty good - a free tune-up every year for 5 years and an in-home warranty? That's nice. Don't know if every dealer does that but it's super good.
Sixth impression - filtration. The salesman didn't seem to know the difference between HEPA and "Hospital Grade", but I'm an allergy nerd so I'm not surprised. That said, the filter bag is IMPRESSIVE and probably comes close to meeting HEPA standards. The small particle count on the PerformanceReviews video was concerning, but was 95+% lower than the surrounding air so it's not a big complaint.
Seventh impression - fit and finish. I wasn't prepared for how WELL BUILT these are. And how SMOOTH they are.
Then I test-drove a K3. Most of the impressions are the same. The hose has been updated - although it still doesn't taper, it does have the same controls as the E3 now. The cord rewind is still pull-to-retract, and the attachments are still weird. That said, it's nice. The onboard filter wasn't HEPA but they had the HEPA service kit there. I'd love to see particle counts for this unit. It's actually about the same weight, in spite of being smaller. The offset hose is a little weird. All in all not a bad unit. The airbelt cover is ... odd. Looks and feels like foam but is fabric.
Verdict: I want to test-drive a Miele. I did NOT walk out with either Sebo, although I did walk out insanely impressed with the ET-1. I'll be posting my Miele impressions tomorrow. But the total-cost-to-purchase on an E3 with the attachments I need would be like $1350-$1400 plus tax. Stay tuned.

2023.03.20 22:12 DaddySanctus An aging gamers perspective of Diablo 4
| I first started playing Diablo in 2000, when Diablo 2 was first released. I didn't have the pleasure of being introduced to the game before that. I am someone who enjoyed both D2 and D3. Each game had it's pros and cons, but what they both did they did pretty well. Playing the Beta this weekend was my first hands on experience with Diablo 4, and I was excited to try it to say the least. Here are some of my experiences / thoughts on the game. \* Good / Positives*\** Atmosphere / Art: I was concerned about the darker atmosphere at first when watching early footage of the game, but it actually felt really nice and looked great. I enjoyed the darker theme and thought the maps were very cool looking with the various details. It really sucks you into the game and makes you feel like you're in this hellhole of Sanctuary. Combat: The combat feels great, plain and simple. The skills both looked cool and felt good to use. I tried out a variety of skills amongst all 3 classes, and while some certainly felt stronger than others, I enjoyed them all none the less. Skills like the Rogue Puncture Shot w/ Shadow Imbue, or the Sorceress Frost Nova + Ice Shards, the Barbs Upheaval. The pacing of combat felt good too, it wasn't too fast or too slow. Sometimes getting nice procs with your skills would wipe a large pack quickly which was satisfying, but other times you struggled against certain bosses or Elites, or groups of Elites. Storyline: The stroyline so far and the voice acting and cutscenes that went with it, kept me hungering for more. I really enjoyed all the voice acting so far that we've seen and the few cutscenes we had. I listened to every bit of dialogue I could, and the world of Sanctuary felt alive with misery. Primary Stats / Affixes: I like that the Primary stats Strength / Intelligence / Dexterity / Willpower changed slightly based on the class you picked. For example, playing as a Sorceress, the Intelligence stat would increase my Skill Damage and Resistances. However, if I was playing as a Rogue, my Intelligence would increase my Crit Chance and Resistances, while Dexterity increased Skill Damage and Dodge Chance. The Affixes on items felt much more simplified than D3, there were far less stats that could roll which I have mixed feelings on. While I do feel D3 had some bloated stats like extra damage to Elites & Life Regen Per Second, I am slightly concerned they went too far in the simplification of Affixes. Random Events / Zone Events: I really enjoyed the random events that were around the map, there was a decent enough variety of them and I'm sure more will be added in the future. I only had the chance to complete the "Gathering the Legion" event once, but that was by far my favorite. Boss Fights / World Boss: I liked both the World Boss and the Boss Fights. The various mechanics the bosses had was appealing, and I could see them introducing harder and more complicated bosses in the future with more Lost Ark style mechanics. I think the bosses in Lost Ark were pretty cool. Some were overly complicated, which I don't think Diablo would get to that point, but having some complexity & mechanics in the fights wouldn't be a bad thing. Potion System: Plain and simple I like the potion system of D4. It didn't feel like I was having to constantly search for / collect / craft potions like I did in D2, but it also didn't feel like somewhat of an afterthought like it does in D3. It was a nice balance between the two and I appreciated being able to spam heals, while also needing to keep an eye on the number of potions I had available. Rare Items: One of the best changes I've seen is the fact that Rare items can give +Skills now. That (I hope) will be a big game changer down the road allowing for some really powerful or custom builds, and also giving people a reason to pay attention to what they're collecting and salvaging. It also makes the trading aspect more interesting as well. Character Panel I actually really liked how the Character Panel turned out in the game. I think it was clean and easy to navigate and the Character themselves looked great in the preview. I would have preferred to see the Stats and Materials tabs flipped though, with Stats being the first / primary thing that you saw instead of the Materials. https://preview.redd.it/vepc38hnjyoa1.png?width=1019&format=png&auto=webp&s=7f079b5c502654a42c3b538c49a0462bf08083a3 Various UIs I thought a majority of the UI's in the game looked good, and matched well with the Diablo theme. I didn't find things hard to navigate and it felt pretty intuitive where to go to find what I needed. Map Quest Journal Sidequest Journal Codex of Power Challenges Region Progress Social Tab Skill Tree ** Issues / Complaints\\** Invisible Walls Playing the Rogue as a ranged build felt rough at times, as your Arrows would get stuck on various invisible barriers fairly frequently. There were also some issues leaving / entering Kyovashad at times, which I think are just bugs that will get worked out. Arrows colliding with invisible wall In-Game Fonts The Ariel style text for in-game drops and dialogue / audio logs felt off. It didn't seem to really match the theme of the game. Example of Text Example of Text There were various fonts that were used in the game, and some others such as the Quest Title Font would have made a better match for in-game drops & dialogue. Quest Name Font - Much more Diablo themed Font when viewing gear didn't seem as out of place. Was easy to read (I could have made it a smaller font too) Skill Tree: I had some concerns that the skill tree may be lacking for building truly customized characters at end-game. As I progressed and unlocked more Aspects, I was able to play around with my build and try new things. I would, however, like to see maybe 1-2 more of the secondary choices after choosing a main Basic / Core etc skill, similar to the Rune's of D3. Again, this is something that could work itself out in the long run with discovering more aspects and tailoring our builds more. Dungeons: While I liked the dungeons, I would have really liked to see more random events in those dungeons. Maybe rare elites that spawned in similar to The Butcher, or zone events within the dungeons to add some variety. The layouts of the dungeons themselves felt slightly too streamlined. I would like to see more open areas and not so many connecting corridors. Example of Dungeon Layout Dungeon Complete / Event UI: When completing dungeons and events, the banners at the top of the screen could be scaled down. They take up quite a bit of space along the top of the screen. The audio books also take up a large portion of the screen with text at the bottom of the screen and could be scaled down a bit. Ultimate Skill Slot: Can we get a dedicated key or slot for Ultimate Skills? Please? Especially with the +skills from Rares, it's easy to have way more than 6 skills available at a time. With such a long cooldown, having the Ultimate on it's own skill slot would be a nice QoL improvement. Gem Tab: We are once again asking for a gem tab. There's clearly enough UI space in the inventory for one, and it would free up quite a few slots when running dungeons and questing. Zoom / Camera Perspective: I think the camera zoom could be bumped out slightly. Maybe just a smidge, like 10% even. Normal Camera Zoom Normal Camera Zoom Zoomed Out I would like to see a balance of these two zooms, somewhere in the middle of the two. Giving us just slightly more area to see while running dungeons and exploring the world. \*Final Thoughts*\** I had a ton of fun this beta. While I think there are definitely areas of improvement needed with the game, I feel the game will be successful and be a ton of fun to play. While some may not like the MMO aspects of the game, I know it opens the door for a much larger variety of content that what Diablo has ever had before. I am eagerly waiting for June to arrive so we can finally delve deep into Sanctuary. submitted by DaddySanctus to diablo4 [link] [comments] |
