Circa 2021, fully custom Gavko Nurse in flawless, indistinguishable from new condition. Blade steel is unmarked, but made of AEB-L. In fact the entire knife is sterile except for the Gavko logo on pocket clip. Blade is perfectly centered. Zero blade play in any direction. No lock stick. No nicks, chips or rolls on perfect original edge. Bead blasted Ti scales are absolutely perfect. No imperfections at all. Speed holes on show scale to make knife just a little bit lighter. Milled pocket clip has very elegant shape that starts narrower at the screws and widens towards the end. It's also in perfect condition. Here's a detail that you will not typically find on production knives, every screw on the knife has the exact same blasted finish as the rest of the handles giving it a very monochromatic aesthetic. And while I'm pointing out hand made custom details, I want to also be sure to point out that the spine of the blade and the every edge of the frame has the Gavko signature "file work", not exactly sure what to call it. Action is nice and smooth as you would expect from a Gavko custom. Smooth to Spydie flick open or slow roll using the large elongated opening. Smooth to close as well. Not drop shut but not Chris Reeve hydraulic either. Somewhere in between. Comes with original Gavko "Otterbox" case. No COA as it did not come with one new. I don't believe Mike Gavko does COA's. Unlike just about every other MT, I actually found this exact configuration for sale at several authorized dealers for $325 + tax/shipping. Near mint overall condition. Blade is like new. No nicks, chips or rolls on on unsharpened original MT factory edge. Black aluminum handles are nearly indistinguishable from new. There are a couple snail trails on the white talon logo which is just about impossible to avoid. Pocket clip is missing one spot of black finish on the "lip". Again, just about unavoidable as it's a high point. The "wear" on this knife is consistent with carrying it a handful of times. All proprietary screws are like new, never touched by a tool after leaving MT. Great action. Blade fires out smooth, fast and HARD. Nice and easy to retract. Comes with original MT box, pamphlets and baggie. Save $80+ over buying a new knife. Circa 2021, fully custom Gavko Nurse in flawless, indistinguishable from new condition. Blade steel is unmarked, but made of AEB-L. In fact the entire knife is sterile except for the Gavko logo on pocket clip. Blade is perfectly centered. Zero blade play in any direction. No lock stick. No nicks, chips or rolls on perfect original edge. Bead blasted Ti scales are absolutely perfect. No imperfections at all. Speed holes on show scale to make knife just a little bit lighter. Milled pocket clip has very elegant shape that starts narrower at the screws and widens towards the end. It's also in perfect condition. Here's a detail that you will not typically find on production knives, every screw on the knife has the exact same blasted finish as the rest of the handles giving it a very monochromatic aesthetic. And while I'm pointing out hand made custom details, I want to also be sure to point out that the spine of the blade and the every edge of the frame has the Gavko signature "file work", not exactly sure what to call it. Action is nice and smooth as you would expect from a Gavko custom. Smooth to Spydie flick open or slow roll using the large elongated opening. Smooth to close as well. Not drop shut but not Chris Reeve hydraulic either. Somewhere in between. Comes with original Gavko "Otterbox" case. No COA as it did not come with one new. I don't believe Mike Gavko does COA's. Manufactured 9/2022. Microtech Ultratech Tactical Standard with black M390 tanto blade, blacked out hardware and blacked out "attitude adjuster" (aka glass breaker). Unlike just about every other MT, I actually found this exact configuration for sale at several authorized dealers for $325 + tax/shipping. Near mint overall condition. Blade is like new. No nicks, chips or rolls on on unsharpened original MT factory edge. Black aluminum handles are nearly indistinguishable from new. There are a couple snail trails on the white talon logo which is just about impossible to avoid. Pocket clip is missing one spot of black finish on the "lip". Again, just about unavoidable as it's a high point. The "wear" on this knife is consistent with carrying it a handful of times. All proprietary screws are like new, never touched by a tool after leaving MT. Great action. Blade fires out smooth, fast and HARD. Nice and easy to retract. Comes with original MT box, pamphlets and baggie. Save $80+ over buying a new knife. Following my last ill-fated, tone-deaf post around my story, it seems that a lot of people agree that the name of my university carried my ass in my career…and that’s true. People were also saying that I left out some crucial details as to how I was accepted into Wharton (especially the privilege part). So since I insulted this sub so much, I’ll try to make up for it with this post.
The purpose is to lay out cleanly all the things I did to get into Wharton even though my original goal was UCLA, and I didn’t even know Wharton existed until junior year. This should apply to anyone applying to a business / finance major at any school.
I hope this will be a helpful frame of reference / guide for high school students in their freshman or sophomore years. This applies to juniors too, but if you haven’t been doing any of the things below, you may be a bit too late to be honest.
I’m also assuming you’re a regular student and not an athlete which is a whole different world.
PART 1: PRIVILEGE
Okay, let’s get this out of the way – the privileges and advantages I had, starting with my financial situation.
I wasn’t poor, but I wasn’t mega rich either. I suppose upper middle class is fair. My parents saved up to fund my entire college tuition, which is probably the biggest point of privilege.
They also funded the summer programs I attended (described below) as well as tutoring. All-in (tuition + room and board + summer programs + tutoring + college tours incl. airfare and hotel) cost was probably ~$300 - $400k total. I told them I would be financially independent by senior year of college and kept my word.
(That’s a lot of money, but my parents saved like MADMEN, and I am eternally grateful. I went to a very low ranked public school in California, almost exclusively wore clothing from Costco, Target, and Macy’s holiday sales, almost never went on vacations, used coupons for everything, etc.)
I’m Asian Male…so no diversity benefit. Do with that what you will. I did not have benefit of legacy, donations, connections, etc.
PART 2: ACADEMICS
I’ll spend less time on this because you either have good stats or you don’t. Personally, I was a 4.0 student. Good standardized test scores with 2250 SAT and 35 ACT.
Got 5s on my AP exams for Chemistry, English, Euro History, US History, Psychology, Chinese. I did not take AP Calculus btw and my school had no AP Econ.
Also got 800 on my SAT II for Chinese, Chemistry and high 700s for Math (don’t remember the exact score).
I got tutoring for my SATs, but I ended up relying on my ACT score, which I did not receive tutoring for (just used Sparknotes!)
PART 3: EXTRACURRICULARS
Now if you don’t have the perfect academics, this is where you can make up for it. The goal is to demonstrate that you have leadership and/or entrepreneurial abilities, a “philanthropic heart”, and an interest in business, all traits that business schools will eat up.
For me, I did the following extracurriculars, in order of what I think was most to least impactful. Not naming some orgs below because I don’t want my identity revealed:
1) Had a group of friends who managed to start a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to tutoring underprivileged students. I joined in the middle of my junior year when it was getting started, so I was listed as a co-founder, but I wasn’t involved in the registration. I did help to get us partnerships with schools and get textbook donations from various sources. I also tutored. This helped to demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit.
2) Joined another 501(c)(3) org (not as cofounder) during junior year that did a bunch of different community service things including, for example, more tutoring, homeless shelter service, etc. (helps to demonstrate philanthropy)
3) Future Business Leaders of America: I was a member officially at my school’s club, but I didn’t really ever do anything…still helped to demonstrate interest in business though.
4) Was captain of my dance team (helps because it demonstrates leadership + I helped us get funding from the school so that’s tangentially business-related).
5) Did various community service activities with my local parks & recreations program, including being a summer camp counselor, setting up park concerts, etc. Again this demonstrates philanthropy, though I really did this because I enjoyed it and was paid a small amount for a few events.
PART 4: AWARDS
These are kind of “extra credit” points. I never won anything big unfortunately. I did win a couple of dance awards, but I doubt that held any weight realistically. I did get the AP Scholar with Distinction or something for the 5s I scored on my AP exams. And I got my IB Diploma.
However, my awesome guidance counselor knew I was doing a bunch of community service already and recommended that I try for the Congressional Award and the Presidential Service Award, which I applied for junior year.
For the Congressional Award, you essentially set goals around community service, personal development, physical fitness, and exploration (i.e., travel – I did a camping trip with my uncle). You then record your progress and can earn a Gold Certificate. The fee is like $25 I think.
For the Presidential Service Award, it’s all just about hours of community service, so I got the gold medal pretty easily given the above.
Personally, I’d recommend all high schoolers go for these or similar programs. You’ll be doing plenty of community service anyways, and the other requirements are very easy. For example, my fitness goal was to do a handstand lol…
PART 5: SUMMER PROGRAMS
I ended up going to Stanford’s EPGY (Educational Program for Gifted Youth) and Johns Hopkins CTY (Center for Talented Youth) for science courses my Freshman year following my biology teacher’s recommendation (he worked for CTY). I was considering going into medicine at the time…a dream that was quickly killed when I realized I sucked in both programs…
This is certainly a privileged thing as each program will cost a couple thousand dollars (since you live on campus for a few weeks in summer). It’s helpful, but in no way a requirement.
I also did a one-week thing with UCLA’s summer business program (forget the name) junior year. These camps are honestly a lot of fun in any case, so if you have the finances, I would recommend them.
PART 6: NETWORKING (aka Kissing the University’s Ass)
This one’s simple. Do anything to show you’re interested in the university you want. I flew out to Penn to attend the college tours. While I was there, I reached out to finance professors to discuss various research / essays they had written.
I also reached out to the [head of admissions?] to have lunch. I also reached out to existing students to talk about their time at the university. All of this is ammo for your application essays.
A lot of these things are recorded by the university so you’ll have a record when you apply. Super important!
PART 7: ESSAY
Now for one of the most critical parts of your application…iirc, there’s an essay for the common application and then a “Why Penn?” essay. For the common app essay, it’s all about philanthropic business dreams. The biggest tip I have here is that the start of your essays is of utmost importance.
You need to hook the exhausted admissions person reading thousands of essays. I knew classmates that did this by writing a poem instead of an essay, writing a story instead of an essay, etc. It should also show a reason for pursuing business and have a philanthropic-leaning grand vision.
For me, I had an edgelord phase where I wrote a lot of emo poetry (lmfao). I had troubles with publishers, so I used this and went with the story format…(e.g., “I wake up to the sound of my email, an anticipatory anxiety creeping in my stomach. Has the publisher finally responded?...”)
I basically wrote about my troubles publishing, the plight of bookstores and independent authors, and my goal of starting a non-profit national business to help struggling authors facing the impending conquest of emperor Bezos’ evil Amazon empire, so I wanted to learn the business acumen to do so.
Yes, I see the irony of me ending up in IB…
As for the Why Penn essay, I went with a creative story format as well, but a story of a day on campus. Super cringe, but something like, “My Day at Penn…The sunlight is bright outside as I wake up in my dorm in the Quad. I hastily gather my materials and head to my Finance 100 class with Professor X. Today, the lesson is about Y, and I listen intently as I recall Professor X’s essay, which I read as I was contemplating the implications of […] After class, I run down Locust Walk to make it in time for my meeting at Z club...”
This is your opportunity to show you did your fucking research and have stuck your nose so far up the university’s ass that you can taste their dinner from yesterday…Write about the classes you’ve read about, the clubs you’ve talked to current students about, the convos with professors, etc. Name drop as much as you can!
PART 8. INTERVIEW
Most of these schools will interview you, and a lot will be alumni. You should prepare a resume ahead of time listing the following: Extracurriculars, Honors and Awards, Organizations and Volunteer Work, Summer Programs, Internships, Other Hobbies / Interests including brief description of each and date.
Treat this like a job interview and dress in a suit. If you’ve prepped your essays already, you should have your story down. It’s just a matter of rehearsing and regurgitating your dreams of philanthropic business entrepreneurship and how the school will help, name dropping at any opportunity to do so.

What he didn’t expect was for the opposing counsel lean over to him and call the judge the c-word. “We weren’t out the courtroom door when he said that to me under his breath,” Ward says. “He never would have said that when I was female.”
Many trans men I spoke with said they had no idea how rough women at work had it until they transitioned. As soon as they came out as men, they found their missteps minimized and their successes amplified. Often, they say, their words carried more weight: They seemed to gain authority and professional respect overnight. They also saw confirmation of the sexist attitudes they had long suspected: They recalled hearing female colleagues belittled by male bosses, or female job applicants called names.
“If I’m going off-the cuff, no-one really questions it,” Ward says. “It’s taken as, ‘He’s saying it, so it must be true.’ Whereas while I was practicing as female, it was ‘Show me your authority, you don’t know any better yet.’”
Mitch Davis is now a director of organizational development at Planned Parenthood Federation of America in New York City, but he’s worked in HR for many different companies since coming out eight years ago. In one previous job, he heard his boss call female colleagues “old cows” and refer to a middle-aged job applicant as “Dame Edna” after she’d left an interview. “Evidently men say things like that to each other all the time,” he says.
Other trans men say they’ve heard male co-workers sexualize female colleagues when no women are present. “There’s some crude humor, some crass humor,” says Cameron Combs, an IT consultant in Olympia, Washington. He says he’s heard male colleagues do “appraisals” of women in the office or observe how female co-workers used their “womanly wiles” to rise up the ladder, conversations he says he never would have heard when he was a woman. “When they saw me as female, it was kind of an automatic stop,” he says. “It’s a little less censored, the jokes I hear, the comments.”
Some trans men have noticed the professional benefits of maleness. James Gardner is a newscaster in Victoria, Canada, who had been reading the news as Sheila Gardner for almost three decades before he transitioned at 54. As soon as he began hosting as a man, he stopped getting as many calls from men pointing out tiny errors. “It was always male callers to Sheila saying I had screwed up my grammar, correcting me,” he says. “I don’t get as many calls to James correcting me. I’m the same person, but the men are less critical of James.”
Dana Delgardo is a family nurse practitioner and Air Force captain who transitioned three years ago. Since his transition, he’s noticed that his female patients are less open with him about their sexual behavior, but his bosses give him more responsibility. “All of a sudden, I’m the golden child,” he says. “I have been with this company for 6 years, no ever recommended me for management. Now I’m put into a managerial position where I could possibly be a regional director.”
Trans women have long observed the flip side of this reality. Joan Roughgarden, a professor emerita of biology at Stanford and a transgender woman, says it became much more difficult to publish her work when she was writing under a female name. “When I would write a paper and submit it to a journal it would be almost automatically accepted,” she said of the time when she had a man’s name. “But after I transitioned, all of a sudden papers were running into more trouble, grant proposals were running into more trouble, the whole thing was getting more difficult.”
“As a man, you’re assumed to be competent unless proven otherwise,” she says. “Whereas as a woman you’re presumed to be incompetent unless proven otherwise.”
Many white trans men said they felt it was easier to walk through the world, freed from the myriad expectations placed on women.

As soon as they came out as men, they found their missteps minimized and their successes amplified. Often, they say, their words carried more weight: They seemed to gain authority and professional respect overnight. They also saw confirmation of the sexist attitudes they had long suspected: They recalled hearing female colleagues belittled by male bosses, or female job applicants called names.
“If I’m going off-the cuff, no-one really questions it,” Ward says. “It’s taken as, ‘He’s saying it, so it must be true.’ Whereas while I was practicing as female, it was ‘Show me your authority, you don’t know any better yet.’”
Mitch Davis is now a director of organizational development at Planned Parenthood Federation of America in New York City, but he’s worked in HR for many different companies since coming out eight years ago. In one previous job, he heard his boss call female colleagues “old cows” and refer to a middle-aged job applicant as “Dame Edna” after she’d left an interview. “Evidently men say things like that to each other all the time,” he says.
Other trans men say they’ve heard male co-workers sexualize female colleagues when no women are present. “There’s some crude humor, some crass humor,” says Cameron Combs, an IT consultant in Olympia, Washington. He says he’s heard male colleagues do “appraisals” of women in the office or observe how female co-workers used their “womanly wiles” to rise up the ladder, conversations he says he never would have heard when he was a woman. “When they saw me as female, it was kind of an automatic stop,” he says. “It’s a little less censored, the jokes I hear, the comments.”
Some trans men have noticed the professional benefits of maleness. James Gardner is a newscaster in Victoria, Canada, who had been reading the news as Sheila Gardner for almost three decades before he transitioned at 54. As soon as he began hosting as a man, he stopped getting as many calls from men pointing out tiny errors. “It was always male callers to Sheila saying I had screwed up my grammar, correcting me,” he says. “I don’t get as many calls to James correcting me. I’m the same person, but the men are less critical of James.”
Dana Delgardo is a family nurse practitioner and Air Force captain who transitioned three years ago. Since his transition, he’s noticed that his female patients are less open with him about their sexual behavior, but his bosses give him more responsibility. “All of a sudden, I’m the golden child,” he says. “I have been with this company for 6 years, no ever recommended me for management. Now I’m put into a managerial position where I could possibly be a regional director.”
Trans women have long observed the flip side of this reality. Joan Roughgarden, a professor emerita of biology at Stanford and a transgender woman, says it became much more difficult to publish her work when she was writing under a female name. “When I would write a paper and submit it to a journal it would be almost automatically accepted,” she said of the time when she had a man’s name. “But after I transitioned, all of a sudden papers were running into more trouble, grant proposals were running into more trouble, the whole thing was getting more difficult.”
“As a man, you’re assumed to be competent unless proven otherwise,” she says. “Whereas as a woman you’re presumed to be incompetent unless proven otherwise.”
Many white trans men said they felt it was easier to walk through the world, freed from the myriad expectations placed on women.

Does she need to bring cash or is it easy to use Apple Pay? She has a debit card as well.
Is any other currency accepted, like Sterling, or Icelandic Krona only?
Do they use standard European plugs to charge electronics?

Hi all! Wondering if anyone else has had this experience: I had longstanding psoriasis before I started chemo for cHL (A+AVD), and during treatment it went into full remission, which was an unexpected silver lining. Now I’ve been off treatment for about 3 mo and my psoriasis has gone BANANAS. Any tiny break in my skin becomes a new lesion, including in really unusual spots for psoriasis (upper arms, anyone?), and all the lesions are bright red and raised and very scaly and terribly itchy. Much worse now than it ever was before chemo.
I’ve seen one of the dermatologists at my cancer center and she was less than helpful; in fairness, I think she really only deals with skin cancers and not with skin issues related to cancer treatment. Have booked a visit with another derm. Curious to know if anyone else has dealt with this and, if so, what helped.
And relatedly… how is everyone doing with feeling comfortable with mid-chemo and post-chemo bodies in general? Like many, I put on weight during treatment, and I also had a pulmonary embolism that’s left me with some lasting shortness of breath and chest pain. Hair has been very slow to grow back in, and then there’s the out-of-control psoriasis, and on bad days I feel like an itchy achy huffing puffing scaly balding rhinoceros. Dating seems impossible and even just making peace with the body I have right now feels really tricky. Intellectually I know that this body got through cancer and chemo in one piece and is empirically badass no matter how I feel about it. Hoping I can get my feelings on board with this important truth sooner than later. Anything y’all have found helpful?

I hadn't done anything in almost an entire year, it's been hard. But yesterday I failed, and took it a bit to far. If forgotten how freeing it can be to finally be able to control of my own pain. So yesterday on my way to work I found an injured rabbit on the road. They had blood all over them, I don't know what had happened. So I wrapped them in a shirt and picked them up and took them to my car. I spent about 15 minutes looking for a wildlife rehab center l, then started to drive there. But on the way they died, which I know shouldn't be a surprise, but I feel like I failed them. I feel like if I hadn't taken so much time looking for a rehab center they would have lived.

Victor sat at his kitchen table and stared at the tablet in his hand as he blew on his morning coffee. It had been a busy week, setting up areas for construction with enough room for the nano-forge, then using it to build auto-factories to build more mining drones and more forge spiders to gather more resources and clear out more areas.
Thus far he had Ingot Storage 1 complete and the forge spiders pathed to bring back and sort them. Then Hydroponics 1 was complete, the auto-farmers were programmed and with any luck in about six weeks he’d have wheat, oats, barley, corn, beans, rice, cabbage, potatoes, tomatoes, okra, mushrooms, squash, and many more fruits and vegetables.
Today he was working on Meat Lab 1. Set up was pretty straight forward, the equipment and power were in place, and the specimens were brought from dimensional storage to the grow labs, it was just the pathing necessary to cultivate, harvest and can the meats. His budget was limited here, he had chicken, beef, and pork cultures, and that was it.
Who would have thought his life savings, his parents life savings, and the sale of his ancestral home still couldn’t get him everything he wanted to start a new life on a colony world? He tapped his tablet a few more times before he was satisfied with the pathing, he pretty much copied it over from Hydro 1, they both canned the food in the end anyways.
He then checked on his mining drones, they were busy little beavers, and had found a remarkable amount of usable materials. More than even the satellite estimated for this location, he sent a few of them two days ago to cut a shaft down to the petroleum reserves, it appears that they had indeed succeeded in locating it.
He brought up the auto-factories that he had built from the nano-forge, numbers three and seven were idle, so he started constructing hauler drones to pump the raw petroleum into their internal tanks and then bring them up to Storage 1, where they can unload into new tanks. This will solve my plastics issue… I hope.
Yup, everything was going smoothly. Even if he never made it back to the empire, at least here he could have a little piece of it, with all the modern conveniences he was used to. “Screw living in places like Wuzhen. They didn’t even have indoor plumbing!” He muttered as his attention was brought to a notification on his tablet. INTRUDER ALERT. ____________ Pan ran as though her life depended on it. Well, actually it did, for the instinctive Ox-Kin that were chasing her would kill and eat her if she were caught. Being Rabbit-Kin her small and agile frame allowed her speed and maneuverability, but the Ox-Kin instinctuals didn’t have to run around trees, they could just push them aside!
Her wagon and all her goods were lost, she was dirty and scared. There was a clearing up ahead and her heart dropped, nowhere to hide, and the stream would slow her down, she was trapped now! She frantically looked from left to right as she continued to run, looking for some way out as the Ox-Kin roared behind her tearing up the ground as their razor sharp hoofs slammed into the ground.
She heard a sound as if there were thunderstorm raging, but it did not end, it simply got louder. She looked up in time to see a black figure on wings of fire plunge towards the ground. She didn’t stop, if it would distract the instinctuals then she would use it to her advantage and hopefully escape this terrible fate.
Suddenly she heard a sound as if someone were rubbing the rim of a meditation bowl, only hundreds of times louder, then screams of pain, several thuds, and then silence. She turned her head to see the black figure stand upright and to her astonishment, all the Ox-Kin were down.
No, not down, dead. Cut in half, obviously in mid gallop for the halves of their bodies were separated by meters. She slowed to take in the strange figure, its helmet magically disappeared behind him, showing a foreign face with short cropped black hair and eyes she had only seen on portraits of the Eternal Empress. _____________ “It’s ok, they’re all dead now. Waste of good beef if you ask me, but it’s a little too close to cannibalism for me. Had enough corpo-starch in the guard to last me a lifetime.” He said as she stopped to take a breath. He slowly started walking over to her.
Pan backed up, rather involuntarily, as this man had just slaughtered half a dozen instinctual Ox-Kin in the blink of an eye.
“Whoa, calm down, not gonna hurt you. Just want to ask you a few questions, I’m Victor by the way, what’s your name?” He asked, hands out to show he meant no harm.
Pan finally caught enough wind to take her hands off her thighs and straighten up, one of her bunny ears fell across her face, a sign of how exhausted she truly was. “I’m… Pan… Sorry, still trying to catch my breath.”
The strange man cocked his head to the side and she noticed it wasn’t just a helm he had been wearing, At first she thought he was wearing all black clothing, but it was actually armor, very intricate armor. “Are you a cultivator? I’ve never seen a male cultivator before.”
Victor chuckled, “I’ve been getting that a lot lately. The answer is… complicated. Now, about those questions. Shall we walk back to your home while I ask?”
Pan shook her head, “The only home I had was my wagon. I was a trader who bought and sold goods. The instinctuals destroyed it while I was gathering water. I heard my Ox bellow and when I came up from the stream it was being eaten, the wagon destroyed, my wares nothing more than shredded trash.” She looked down and started to cry as the realization that she had just lost everything took hold.
Victor put on his officers face, oh boy. Here come the water works. “Shh, calm down, it’s only a wagon. It’s a thing, and things can be replaced.”
She looked up to him and lowered her hands, “Perhaps to a powerful cultivator, but I am but a lowly peasant girl. I will have to sell my self on the streets to eat now!” She buried her face back into her hands and wailed.
“Oh for Emperors sakes!” Victor thought as he scooped the small woman up in his arms. This prompted a sharp “Eeek!” From her as he activated his jump jets. _____________ Pan was terrified. Rabbit-Kin were not made for flying. The strange cultivator had scooped her up in his arms as though she were a small child and launched them into the air. She tried to scream, but the air screeching by her face seemed to carry the noise away. Though she doubted anyone could have heard over fire erupting from his wings.
Suddenly they landed and she was set down. She looked around and saw they were on a ledge, far up the mountain where the Ox-Kin had chased her. The ledge had a metal rail all the way around it but she saw no way to reach it other than flight.
The strange man must have brought his helmet back up before they launched into the air, because he had it up now. He turned to the mountain and it split open before him! After retracting his helm he simply said, “Follow me, since you don’t have a home, I’ll bring you to mine.”
She followed him into the mountain, expecting it to be dark and cold, but to her surprise it was warm and light shown down from the ceiling as if it were daylight! The walls were smooth stone, and after a few meters in the mountain closed behind them, only it seemed to do it twice, once inside and once outside.
She continued to walk until they came to a strange door with a wheel in the center. The cultivator spun the wheel and opened the metal door. She had never seen so much worked metal in all her days. Even the blacksmith shops lacked the amount, or skill she saw here.
After she entered into a small chamber, Victor closed the door behind them and walked to a strange outcropping on the wall and turned around. The armor up close was neither new nor perfect, she saw dints and dings, and scorch marks in places. Then she jumped back as it split in half and Victor stepped out in nothing more than short pants covering his man-hood.
She blushed and diverted her eyes, but not before noticing the rippling muscles, scar tissue, and little round metal discs at regular intervals all over his body. He covered himself with a very plush white robe and slippers before opening another door that was identical to the first. “Should I wear slippers as well, Master Cultivator?”
Victor looked back, “That won’t be necessary, the cleaning drones will handle any mess we cause.” Pan pondered on what a drone was. A servant perhaps? Was that why he brought me here, to be one of his servants? Or was it something else? Oh no, she mentioned having to sell herself, did he expect her to be one of his mistresses? She wouldn’t be opposed, for he was a handsome man, but what kin was he?
She almost missed what was said next. “This is my humble abode, you’re welcome to stay here for a time while I get my bearings on this land.” Victor said as he walked over to the table and picked up a piece of see-through glass. Magical runes and pictures flared into existence as he tapped at it before setting it back down.
Pan could barely speak. This place was what she would expect in the Imperial palace. There was no kang, or open fire, but it was the perfect temperature and humidity. She saw a large couch, tables, chairs, cabinets of wood, a countertop with a strange steel bowl and what looked as if it were a well pump above it.
The back wall had multiple doors, the two that were open showed one to be a bed room, with a huge bed, the other was tiled with a white chair, it almost looked like a throne? How strange she thought as she peered into the room to see a chamber of fogged glass also inside the room.
Victor noticed her curiosity, “That is the bathroom. Come here, I’ll show you.”
Pan followed Victor into the bathroom as he demonstrated the toilet, explaining rather embarrassingly how it worked and how to use it, he then showed her the glass chamber with the odd steel handles.
“This one is hot, and this one is cold, you turn them both on until you get the temperature just right to clean yourself. On the wall there is liquid soap, shampoo, and conditioner, though I keep my hair close, so the conditioner wouldn’t be as necessary as say someone with your long hair.” He explained.
Pan was shocked as the saw the stream of water pouring from the wall. What manner of magic was this? “I have never seen a male cultivator, but it is known they are master craftsmen, can you all create such magical wonders?”
Victor shrugged, “No idea, I’ve never met another, uh, male cultivator.”
Pan considered, “Could I, maybe use this chamber to clean up? This mornings activities have left me a little soiled.”
Victor nodded, “Of course.” He reached into a small cabinet and produced a large piece of fluffy cloth and placed it on another steel rail outside the chamber. Before placing a smaller version of it inside the chamber on a rack. Finally he reached back into the cabinet and produced a robe much like he was wearing and placed it on a hook behind the door.
He then pointed to the small one inside the chamber, “That is a wash cloth to clean yourself with the soap, use the shampoo here on your hair, and then after rinsing it out, rub the conditioner in and let it sit a bit before finally rinsing it out. Then dry yourself off with this towel, and put on the robe I placed on the door.”
Pan nodded, “What will you do with my clothes after I remove them?”
Victor sniffed “Probably burn them.” He thought to himself. “I will provide you with clothes to lounge around the house.” He turned around and closed the door behind him.
Pan used the ‘toilet’ surprised at its efficiency to clean itself with water before turning on the water stream and adjusting the knobs until it was pleasant. She took to cleaning herself with gusto, for she had never had such luxury. Even the tubs at the inns she could sometimes visit were not this nice.
She heard the door open, and through the smoked glass she could see that Victor seemed to be gathering her things from the floor and leaving behind something on the ‘toilet’. After getting herself more clean that she thought she ever had in her entire life she sighed and decided she needed to get out.
After fiddling with the knobs and nearly freezing herself before turning them the proper way she reached out and grabbed the ‘towel’ and found it did an amazing job of drying her. Afterwards she tied the cloth up in her hair, careful not to get her ears and examined the clothes he brought her.
There was an article of clothing like what he wore, the short pants, but smaller, and tighter. She assumed it was for the same purpose and put it on, then she found a soft pair of pants, like men would wear, but of much finer and softer material. Finally, there was a form fitting shirt that she found left little to the imagination, but she had little choice to but to put it on. Finally there were thick, luxurious slippers on the floor and the robe on the back of the door.
She came out of the bathroom to find him at the strange counter, cooking. “A man who cooks for a woman? I know he is a foreigner, but I have never heard of this happening.” She thought as he waved her to the large table.
“I missed breakfast this morning, your little tussle with the Ox-Kin ladies kind of put it on hold, have you eaten?” He asked.
Pan felt the hunger pains when he asked as she shook her head.
He chuckled as he continued his work, “No, I guess you didn’t get a chance to eat this morning either.
How do you like your eggs?”
Pan was confused, “Um, I prefer them cooked?”
Victor looked back before saying, “Scrambled it is then.”
After a few minutes and some toiling around the cupboards he dropped off a huge plate in front of her. “Normally I’d let the auto-cook prepare the food, but since I’m getting everything up and running at the moment it’s missing a lot of ingredients. So, I worked with what I had, scrambled eggs, bacon, grits, and toast.”
She stared down at her plate, it mostly looked familiar, but the white porridge was a bit different. He handed her strange utensils before pushing two strange bottles with seasonings in them with holes punched in the top. She watched as he used the utensils to eat, and attempted to do the same.
The spoon was easy, she had used those for soup, but the tiny pitch fork and knife were difficult. Victor noticed this and stood up, went to a cabinet and pulled out a drawer and brought back metal chop sticks.
Pan stared at them, they were perhaps brass, possibly even gold, her mouth dropped, these utensils would have been worth more than her wagon! Victor looked up from his food, “Is everything ok? Is there something wrong with the chopsticks?”
Pan hurriedly put the chopsticks to work grabbing up the slivers of pork. “No, no. This lowly peasant girl was merely in amazement at the quality of the utensils.”
Victor nodded as he watched her eyes go round with amazement after chewing on the bacon. Before she dug into the eggs and tried the grits, deciding they needed the seasonings, which she found was salt and a form of pepper, she nodded before cleaning her plate.
Victor sat back, his own plate clean, “Now that’s a healthy appetite, I wasn’t sure a girl your size could finish a plate like that.”
Pan flushed, a bit embarrassed, “It was no doubt due to your cooking expertise. But I still don’t know why you brought me here.”
Victor stood and took her plate and utensils and opened a strange metal door under the counter and placed them into a metal chamber before closing it back. “You said you were a traveling merchant, which means you go places and hear things. I’m new here and have questions. Therefore we can help each other.”
He ushered Pan to the plush couch and sat down, she took the time to pull her hair out of the towel and he took it from her and went into the ‘bathroom’ a strange name as there was no bathtub inside it and returned to sit at the opposite side of the couch.
Pan let him sit before asking, “Ok, you have questions, what do you want to know?”
Victor took a moment to gather his thoughts before speaking, “Why do you have rabbit ears? Why do people in the villages have monkey tails or goats eyes? And what the hell is up with these instinctuals that are more animal that people?” _______________ It had been hours and Pan was actually feeling mentally drained. The man before her was not a cultivator. Whatever he was, she doubted many cultivators except the Empress could hope to match him. The more he showed her, the more she was certain his powers were unlimited. She didn’t know whether to bow in awe, or run in terror.
Not from this plane of existence is how he put it. Meaning from the realm of the divinities maybe? She did not know for sure.
“So, this Eternal Empress came along a few thousand years ago, united the lands, built a wall and a government, and now uses her armies and cultivator sects to maintain law and order across her lands?” He asked.
Pan nodded, “Yes, before her we were broken into tribes that warred against one another constantly.”
Victor paced in front of her, “So she is immortal, like me. That’s good and bad, good in that she may have the knowledge to get me home. Bad, that she could see me as a threat and has tons of resources.” He suddenly stopped pacing. “I’m hungry, are you hungry?”
Pan was not going to say no to a free meal, as she literally had nothing to her name now. Not even her clothes. “I could eat master… er Victor.”
He started off to the ‘kitchen’ and opened the top to the large metal door and produced a round item wrapped in flexible glass? Or was it cloth that looked like glass? “Victor is fine, I’m going to make a Pizza, I doubt you’ve ever had one, but trust me, they’re great.”
As he worked they continued the questions, “So cultivators are broken up into sects, each one with its own goals and agendas, but all loyal to the Empress?”
Pan nodded, “Yes, and then the Iron Legions are armored mortals who keep the peace throughout the empire, although none of the towns around here are large enough to boast a garrison.”
The metal and glass hinged door was opened and the round cake like object that was placed on a pan was put into it and the door closed. “Ok, twenty minutes and we eat. So tell me, what kin is the Empress?”
Pan looked confused, “The Empress is the Empress, she has no kin.”
Victor wiped his hands on a small dish towel, “So you are rabbit-kin, I’ve met tiger-kin and boar-kin, and others, but she has no kin?”
Pan made a sudden connection, “No, she is like you. She has no kin.”
Victor dropped the dish towel on the counter, “So she’s human.” ________________ “Curse that damnable Victor Cane!” Mei swore as she and Xiang pushed the wagon to free it from the mud once more as the Ox pulling it simply lacked the strength to free it.
Xiang looked to her sect sister, “My my, Mei.” She chuckled at her own word play. “If I didn’t know better I’d say you were getting fixated on the male.”
Mei stared daggers at her companion, she knew she could feel the killing intent, but as they were both second tier, it did little. “The male was aloof, arrogant, cared nothing for face, and ignored me on the battlefield!”
Xiang grinned even more as she climbed aboard the wagon and took the reins. “Don’t think the rest of your sisters haven’t noticed the way you talk about him, you cover your interest with complaint, but it is a thin sheet.”
Mei reached down to her left hand, “He put his hand on mine in the Inn before he flew away on wings of fire. He was trying to comfort me on the loss of our sisters.”
Xiang turned her head sharply, “You didn’t put that in your report, this is the first any of us have heard of it.”
Mei sighed, “I don’t know what to think of it. Male cultivators are so rare, just seeing one outside of the the sect inner circles is a rarity. Most of us never get to even speak to a male cultivator unless we ascend to a high tier within the sect, making us worthy of being in their presence. I wanted to cherish it.”
Xiang smiled as she looked back to the ox before snapping the reins, “I would cherish it too, this is a hard life, mortal men would break in our embrace, but a cultivator male would not. He was a good looking man for a foreigner too.”
Mei shuddered, “That he is, even if a bit rugged, he is evidently a soldier after all.”
Xiangs mischievous grin was back, “I knew it, you were pining over this Victor!”
Mei’s killing intent was definitely felt by Xiang this time as she laughed uproariously at her friends discomfort.
“Fear not my OLDER sister, for in one passing of the moon we will be in the Celestial City and you can deliver your prize to the Empress. I am sure after this you will get to see your handsome soldier again. That is, if the Empress doesn’t take him as her own.” Xiang sang the last part with glee.
Mei stopped glaring, “You don’t think she would do that do you?” She asked.
Xiang laughed so hard she almost fell off the wagon.

Then Hydroponics 1 was complete, the auto-farmers were programmed and with any luck in about six weeks he’d have wheat, oats, barley, corn, beans, rice, cabbage, potatoes, tomatoes, okra, mushrooms, squash, and many more fruits and vegetables.
Today he was working on Meat Lab 1. Set up was pretty straight forward, the equipment and power were in place, and the specimens were brought from dimensional storage to the grow labs, it was just the pathing necessary to cultivate, harvest and can the meats. His budget was limited here, he had chicken, beef, and pork cultures, and that was it.
Who would have thought his life savings, his parents life savings, and the sale of his ancestral home still couldn’t get him everything he wanted to start a new life on a colony world? He tapped his tablet a few more times before he was satisfied with the pathing, he pretty much copied it over from Hydro 1, they both canned the food in the end anyways.
He then checked on his mining drones, they were busy little beavers, and had found a remarkable amount of usable materials. More than even the satellite estimated for this location, he sent a few of them two days ago to cut a shaft down to the petroleum reserves, it appears that they had indeed succeeded in locating it.
He brought up the auto-factories that he had built from the nano-forge, numbers three and seven were idle, so he started constructing hauler drones to pump the raw petroleum into their internal tanks and then bring them up to Storage 1, where they can unload into new tanks. This will solve my plastics issue… I hope.
Yup, everything was going smoothly. Even if he never made it back to the empire, at least here he could have a little piece of it, with all the modern conveniences he was used to. “Screw living in places like Wuzhen. They didn’t even have indoor plumbing!” He muttered as his attention was brought to a notification on his tablet. INTRUDER ALERT. ____________ Pan ran as though her life depended on it. Well, actually it did, for the instinctive Ox-Kin that were chasing her would kill and eat her if she were caught. Being Rabbit-Kin her small and agile frame allowed her speed and maneuverability, but the Ox-Kin instinctuals didn’t have to run around trees, they could just push them aside!
Her wagon and all her goods were lost, she was dirty and scared. There was a clearing up ahead and her heart dropped, nowhere to hide, and the stream would slow her down, she was trapped now! She frantically looked from left to right as she continued to run, looking for some way out as the Ox-Kin roared behind her tearing up the ground as their razor sharp hoofs slammed into the ground.
She heard a sound as if there were thunderstorm raging, but it did not end, it simply got louder. She looked up in time to see a black figure on wings of fire plunge towards the ground. She didn’t stop, if it would distract the instinctuals then she would use it to her advantage and hopefully escape this terrible fate.
Suddenly she heard a sound as if someone were rubbing the rim of a meditation bowl, only hundreds of times louder, then screams of pain, several thuds, and then silence. She turned her head to see the black figure stand upright and to her astonishment, all the Ox-Kin were down.
No, not down, dead. Cut in half, obviously in mid gallop for the halves of their bodies were separated by meters. She slowed to take in the strange figure, its helmet magically disappeared behind him, showing a foreign face with short cropped black hair and eyes she had only seen on portraits of the Eternal Empress. _____________ “It’s ok, they’re all dead now. Waste of good beef if you ask me, but it’s a little too close to cannibalism for me. Had enough corpo-starch in the guard to last me a lifetime.” He said as she stopped to take a breath. He slowly started walking over to her.
Pan backed up, rather involuntarily, as this man had just slaughtered half a dozen instinctual Ox-Kin in the blink of an eye.
“Whoa, calm down, not gonna hurt you. Just want to ask you a few questions, I’m Victor by the way, what’s your name?” He asked, hands out to show he meant no harm.
Pan finally caught enough wind to take her hands off her thighs and straighten up, one of her bunny ears fell across her face, a sign of how exhausted she truly was. “I’m… Pan… Sorry, still trying to catch my breath.”
The strange man cocked his head to the side and she noticed it wasn’t just a helm he had been wearing, At first she thought he was wearing all black clothing, but it was actually armor, very intricate armor. “Are you a cultivator? I’ve never seen a male cultivator before.”
Victor chuckled, “I’ve been getting that a lot lately. The answer is… complicated. Now, about those questions. Shall we walk back to your home while I ask?”
Pan shook her head, “The only home I had was my wagon. I was a trader who bought and sold goods. The instinctuals destroyed it while I was gathering water. I heard my Ox bellow and when I came up from the stream it was being eaten, the wagon destroyed, my wares nothing more than shredded trash.” She looked down and started to cry as the realization that she had just lost everything took hold.
Victor put on his officers face, oh boy. Here come the water works. “Shh, calm down, it’s only a wagon. It’s a thing, and things can be replaced.”
She looked up to him and lowered her hands, “Perhaps to a powerful cultivator, but I am but a lowly peasant girl. I will have to sell my self on the streets to eat now!” She buried her face back into her hands and wailed.
“Oh for Emperors sakes!” Victor thought as he scooped the small woman up in his arms. This prompted a sharp “Eeek!” From her as he activated his jump jets. _____________ Pan was terrified. Rabbit-Kin were not made for flying. The strange cultivator had scooped her up in his arms as though she were a small child and launched them into the air. She tried to scream, but the air screeching by her face seemed to carry the noise away. Though she doubted anyone could have heard over fire erupting from his wings.
Suddenly they landed and she was set down. She looked around and saw they were on a ledge, far up the mountain where the Ox-Kin had chased her. The ledge had a metal rail all the way around it but she saw no way to reach it other than flight.
The strange man must have brought his helmet back up before they launched into the air, because he had it up now. He turned to the mountain and it split open before him! After retracting his helm he simply said, “Follow me, since you don’t have a home, I’ll bring you to mine.”
She followed him into the mountain, expecting it to be dark and cold, but to her surprise it was warm and light shown down from the ceiling as if it were daylight! The walls were smooth stone, and after a few meters in the mountain closed behind them, only it seemed to do it twice, once inside and once outside.
She continued to walk until they came to a strange door with a wheel in the center. The cultivator spun the wheel and opened the metal door. She had never seen so much worked metal in all her days. Even the blacksmith shops lacked the amount, or skill she saw here.
After she entered into a small chamber, Victor closed the door behind them and walked to a strange outcropping on the wall and turned around. The armor up close was neither new nor perfect, she saw dints and dings, and scorch marks in places. Then she jumped back as it split in half and Victor stepped out in nothing more than short pants covering his man-hood.
She blushed and diverted her eyes, but not before noticing the rippling muscles, scar tissue, and little round metal discs at regular intervals all over his body. He covered himself with a very plush white robe and slippers before opening another door that was identical to the first. “Should I wear slippers as well, Master Cultivator?”
Victor looked back, “That won’t be necessary, the cleaning drones will handle any mess we cause.” Pan pondered on what a drone was. A servant perhaps? Was that why he brought me here, to be one of his servants? Or was it something else? Oh no, she mentioned having to sell herself, did he expect her to be one of his mistresses? She wouldn’t be opposed, for he was a handsome man, but what kin was he?
She almost missed what was said next. “This is my humble abode, you’re welcome to stay here for a time while I get my bearings on this land.” Victor said as he walked over to the table and picked up a piece of see-through glass. Magical runes and pictures flared into existence as he tapped at it before setting it back down.
Pan could barely speak. This place was what she would expect in the Imperial palace. There was no kang, or open fire, but it was the perfect temperature and humidity. She saw a large couch, tables, chairs, cabinets of wood, a countertop with a strange steel bowl and what looked as if it were a well pump above it.
The back wall had multiple doors, the two that were open showed one to be a bed room, with a huge bed, the other was tiled with a white chair, it almost looked like a throne? How strange she thought as she peered into the room to see a chamber of fogged glass also inside the room.
Victor noticed her curiosity, “That is the bathroom. Come here, I’ll show you.”
Pan followed Victor into the bathroom as he demonstrated the toilet, explaining rather embarrassingly how it worked and how to use it, he then showed her the glass chamber with the odd steel handles.
“This one is hot, and this one is cold, you turn them both on until you get the temperature just right to clean yourself. On the wall there is liquid soap, shampoo, and conditioner, though I keep my hair close, so the conditioner wouldn’t be as necessary as say someone with your long hair.” He explained.
Pan was shocked as the saw the stream of water pouring from the wall. What manner of magic was this? “I have never seen a male cultivator, but it is known they are master craftsmen, can you all create such magical wonders?”
Victor shrugged, “No idea, I’ve never met another, uh, male cultivator.”
Pan considered, “Could I, maybe use this chamber to clean up? This mornings activities have left me a little soiled.”
Victor nodded, “Of course.” He reached into a small cabinet and produced a large piece of fluffy cloth and placed it on another steel rail outside the chamber. Before placing a smaller version of it inside the chamber on a rack. Finally he reached back into the cabinet and produced a robe much like he was wearing and placed it on a hook behind the door.
He then pointed to the small one inside the chamber, “That is a wash cloth to clean yourself with the soap, use the shampoo here on your hair, and then after rinsing it out, rub the conditioner in and let it sit a bit before finally rinsing it out. Then dry yourself off with this towel, and put on the robe I placed on the door.”
Pan nodded, “What will you do with my clothes after I remove them?”
Victor sniffed “Probably burn them.” He thought to himself. “I will provide you with clothes to lounge around the house.” He turned around and closed the door behind him.
Pan used the ‘toilet’ surprised at its efficiency to clean itself with water before turning on the water stream and adjusting the knobs until it was pleasant. She took to cleaning herself with gusto, for she had never had such luxury. Even the tubs at the inns she could sometimes visit were not this nice.
She heard the door open, and through the smoked glass she could see that Victor seemed to be gathering her things from the floor and leaving behind something on the ‘toilet’. After getting herself more clean that she thought she ever had in her entire life she sighed and decided she needed to get out.
After fiddling with the knobs and nearly freezing herself before turning them the proper way she reached out and grabbed the ‘towel’ and found it did an amazing job of drying her. Afterwards she tied the cloth up in her hair, careful not to get her ears and examined the clothes he brought her.
There was an article of clothing like what he wore, the short pants, but smaller, and tighter. She assumed it was for the same purpose and put it on, then she found a soft pair of pants, like men would wear, but of much finer and softer material. Finally, there was a form fitting shirt that she found left little to the imagination, but she had little choice to but to put it on. Finally there were thick, luxurious slippers on the floor and the robe on the back of the door.
She came out of the bathroom to find him at the strange counter, cooking. “A man who cooks for a woman? I know he is a foreigner, but I have never heard of this happening.” She thought as he waved her to the large table.
“I missed breakfast this morning, your little tussle with the Ox-Kin ladies kind of put it on hold, have you eaten?” He asked.
Pan felt the hunger pains when he asked as she shook her head.
He chuckled as he continued his work, “No, I guess you didn’t get a chance to eat this morning either.
How do you like your eggs?”
Pan was confused, “Um, I prefer them cooked?”
Victor looked back before saying, “Scrambled it is then.”
After a few minutes and some toiling around the cupboards he dropped off a huge plate in front of her. “Normally I’d let the auto-cook prepare the food, but since I’m getting everything up and running at the moment it’s missing a lot of ingredients. So, I worked with what I had, scrambled eggs, bacon, grits, and toast.”
She stared down at her plate, it mostly looked familiar, but the white porridge was a bit different. He handed her strange utensils before pushing two strange bottles with seasonings in them with holes punched in the top. She watched as he used the utensils to eat, and attempted to do the same.
The spoon was easy, she had used those for soup, but the tiny pitch fork and knife were difficult. Victor noticed this and stood up, went to a cabinet and pulled out a drawer and brought back metal chop sticks.
Pan stared at them, they were perhaps brass, possibly even gold, her mouth dropped, these utensils would have been worth more than her wagon! Victor looked up from his food, “Is everything ok? Is there something wrong with the chopsticks?”
Pan hurriedly put the chopsticks to work grabbing up the slivers of pork. “No, no. This lowly peasant girl was merely in amazement at the quality of the utensils.”
Victor nodded as he watched her eyes go round with amazement after chewing on the bacon. Before she dug into the eggs and tried the grits, deciding they needed the seasonings, which she found was salt and a form of pepper, she nodded before cleaning her plate.
Victor sat back, his own plate clean, “Now that’s a healthy appetite, I wasn’t sure a girl your size could finish a plate like that.”
Pan flushed, a bit embarrassed, “It was no doubt due to your cooking expertise. But I still don’t know why you brought me here.”
Victor stood and took her plate and utensils and opened a strange metal door under the counter and placed them into a metal chamber before closing it back. “You said you were a traveling merchant, which means you go places and hear things. I’m new here and have questions. Therefore we can help each other.”
He ushered Pan to the plush couch and sat down, she took the time to pull her hair out of the towel and he took it from her and went into the ‘bathroom’ a strange name as there was no bathtub inside it and returned to sit at the opposite side of the couch.
Pan let him sit before asking, “Ok, you have questions, what do you want to know?”
Victor took a moment to gather his thoughts before speaking, “Why do you have rabbit ears? Why do people in the villages have monkey tails or goats eyes? And what the hell is up with these instinctuals that are more animal that people?” _______________ It had been hours and Pan was actually feeling mentally drained. The man before her was not a cultivator. Whatever he was, she doubted many cultivators except the Empress could hope to match him. The more he showed her, the more she was certain his powers were unlimited. She didn’t know whether to bow in awe, or run in terror.
Not from this plane of existence is how he put it. Meaning from the realm of the divinities maybe? She did not know for sure.
“So, this Eternal Empress came along a few thousand years ago, united the lands, built a wall and a government, and now uses her armies and cultivator sects to maintain law and order across her lands?” He asked.
Pan nodded, “Yes, before her we were broken into tribes that warred against one another constantly.”
Victor paced in front of her, “So she is immortal, like me. That’s good and bad, good in that she may have the knowledge to get me home. Bad, that she could see me as a threat and has tons of resources.” He suddenly stopped pacing. “I’m hungry, are you hungry?”
Pan was not going to say no to a free meal, as she literally had nothing to her name now. Not even her clothes. “I could eat master… er Victor.”
He started off to the ‘kitchen’ and opened the top to the large metal door and produced a round item wrapped in flexible glass? Or was it cloth that looked like glass? “Victor is fine, I’m going to make a Pizza, I doubt you’ve ever had one, but trust me, they’re great.”
As he worked they continued the questions, “So cultivators are broken up into sects, each one with its own goals and agendas, but all loyal to the Empress?”
Pan nodded, “Yes, and then the Iron Legions are armored mortals who keep the peace throughout the empire, although none of the towns around here are large enough to boast a garrison.”
The metal and glass hinged door was opened and the round cake like object that was placed on a pan was put into it and the door closed. “Ok, twenty minutes and we eat. So tell me, what kin is the Empress?”
Pan looked confused, “The Empress is the Empress, she has no kin.”
Victor wiped his hands on a small dish towel, “So you are rabbit-kin, I’ve met tiger-kin and boar-kin, and others, but she has no kin?”
Pan made a sudden connection, “No, she is like you. She has no kin.”
Victor dropped the dish towel on the counter, “So she’s human.” ________________ “Curse that damnable Victor Cane!” Mei swore as she and Xiang pushed the wagon to free it from the mud once more as the Ox pulling it simply lacked the strength to free it.
Xiang looked to her sect sister, “My my, Mei.” She chuckled at her own word play. “If I didn’t know better I’d say you were getting fixated on the male.”
Mei stared daggers at her companion, she knew she could feel the killing intent, but as they were both second tier, it did little. “The male was aloof, arrogant, cared nothing for face, and ignored me on the battlefield!”
Xiang grinned even more as she climbed aboard the wagon and took the reins. “Don’t think the rest of your sisters haven’t noticed the way you talk about him, you cover your interest with complaint, but it is a thin sheet.”
Mei reached down to her left hand, “He put his hand on mine in the Inn before he flew away on wings of fire. He was trying to comfort me on the loss of our sisters.”
Xiang turned her head sharply, “You didn’t put that in your report, this is the first any of us have heard of it.”
Mei sighed, “I don’t know what to think of it. Male cultivators are so rare, just seeing one outside of the the sect inner circles is a rarity. Most of us never get to even speak to a male cultivator unless we ascend to a high tier within the sect, making us worthy of being in their presence. I wanted to cherish it.”
Xiang smiled as she looked back to the ox before snapping the reins, “I would cherish it too, this is a hard life, mortal men would break in our embrace, but a cultivator male would not. He was a good looking man for a foreigner too.”
Mei shuddered, “That he is, even if a bit rugged, he is evidently a soldier after all.”
Xiangs mischievous grin was back, “I knew it, you were pining over this Victor!”
Mei’s killing intent was definitely felt by Xiang this time as she laughed uproariously at her friends discomfort.
“Fear not my OLDER sister, for in one passing of the moon we will be in the Celestial City and you can deliver your prize to the Empress. I am sure after this you will get to see your handsome soldier again. That is, if the Empress doesn’t take him as her own.” Xiang sang the last part with glee.
Mei stopped glaring, “You don’t think she would do that do you?” She asked.
Xiang laughed so hard she almost fell off the wagon.

In previous patches, there were "meta" orb distance settings (for blender builds) and range settings like 63/60, which were to ensure orbs were hitting the black holes. This was part of the reason you did not run Free Attack Upgrade & Free Utility Upgrade.
Now, with range changes as they are and still running low/minimum range, I'm able to move my Extra Orbs to 80/81.9m at 69.50 range and still effectively hit the center of the black hole. Is there anything wrong with this that I don't know about? If not, I'd like to keep running Free Attack/Utility upgrade maxed out now considering the strength of the Enemy Level Skip upgrades.
Until I can transition into a new build, I feel like this is my current best option. Any tips/help are welcome. My next UW is 800 stones and I'd like to spend some time upgrading my current UW's a bit before saving up.

Hello.
Throw away account for obvious reasons. Ive written articles here before in the very early days on other throw aways but lurk once in a while. This is kind of a low effort post but i feel like i need to at least get the discussion started.
Anyway this is a critique of this sub. It is meant to be taken constructively and I am not bashing. Many of the people here are enthusiasts who understand the importance of geography on the fate of a nation, a people and an individual (hopefully). But in recent times the quality of discussion has been lacking. I suspect this is because people rely solely on mob thinking and their opinions to inform their decision with minimal logic. Many lack a clear understanding of history, technology, the current state of affairs in the country, and ideological frameworks and geopolitical theories. This is fine. These people aren't in charge of policy. But their opinions can sway the thinking of others on this sub and can cloud discussions.

The same applies to conversations here.
I see this most clearly in discussion of china both in media and this sub. Too many peoples "reality models" or their framework for viewing the world is out of touch with reality. This is to be expected. The reality model/ framework of a day labourer is very different than that of a celebrity. In the same way geopolitical enthusiasts on this sub simply dont understand the fundamentals of indias position with other countries. The media doesnt help either.
To act in a productive manner, an entity must first evaluate what its working with. You need data. This sub is heavily lacking good data on China for example. Here are sources I believe are valuable in starting to develop an information bank on china for the average Indian. This is not an exhaustive list. But it will inform your thinking. What you conclude from this information will be up to you. But the better you information, the better your decisions, and what is an entity if not the net sum of its decisions?
TL;DR : Learn to read from more than one line reddit comments and media pieces to inform your opinion if you actually want to be constructive and lead the country to a better place.

- Make an account with the large chinese social media sites. How many of you have actually tried jumping the fire wall? Do you know the chinese equivalent of reddit? Google? Youtube? Have you tried searching posts on india on these sites to see what comes up for chinese audiences? Well you should try atleast. Also if you are worried about your data, our goverment sold it out to the western companies a long time ago, so dont worry about it lol. whatever you are trying to protect is already gone. Also a lot of these apps are available on the playstore like wechat. Unless the indian government banned those too lul.
- Serpentza is a good youtube channel. He makes highly critical videos of china, but as far as i can tell has a good head on his shoulders and is pretty grounded in reality and doesnt get lost in the rhetoric from either side. He isnt in the "CHINA BAD!!! REEEE!!!" camp of hawks, and neither is he in the "WESTERN PROPAGANDA, CHINA IS HEAVEN!!!!!" china bhakt camp either. He lived in china for 13 years. He is south african and is highly critical of his own country. In many ways he has similarities to dis-illusioned indians but in his case it might be justified. He may not be nice to hear but he is consistent in his beliefs from the videos i have seen. Or i might be getting psy-oped by high level propaganda. My point is, look for videos that are as close to the ground reality of the other side as possible.
- Learn to look for the bad. It is always nice to hear good things about your country. But talk is cheap. Look for the reports of india actually messing up because those are the places that we need to fix. We have poor relations with virtually all of our neighbours. Why? India has abysmal health issues with a large population that is either hungry or malnourished. This has terrible implications for creating high quality indian citizens who not only love but are capable of pushing india forward. Why? If you do this well you will start to think independent of political party posturing and start seeing what actually matters and which parties will actually make a difference and rise above all the media mudslinging. Start by looking at nutrition and the indian diet and its effects on the growth of individuals, toilet and sanitation programs, energy infrastructure. These are the things that really matter. Sure you might get depressed, but if you aren't ready to hear the bad parts of your country then you are a coward, im afraid because then you will never be able to work to fix this. Also the west always pushes india good or bad narratives knowing that the vast percentage of the population are dumb enough to eat it up and give massive concessions to the enemy. Dont be like these people.
- Read a god dam history book. Seriously. History is the biggest bank of data you can have on the actions of states and how they survived. Which empires lasted long? Which fell. Why did they fall? Are their influences still around today? Are those influences good or bad? Human biology has been relatively constant for the last 300,000 years. This means the people who lived in the past were no different intellectually than us. Dont make the mistake of thinking we are different because we arent quite there (yet). How did they make sense of their state? If you cant read a history book, then listen to a few low level history podcasts. Dan carlin on youtube has great series on ancient empires.
- Read a god dam geopolitical science book. Francis Fukuyama is famous in US geopolitical circles of the highest level. He also has written books. Maybe its a good idea to read them? The autobiographies of great leaders are important sources into their inner workings too. Giga Chad Deng Xiaoping, Giga Chad Lee Kuan Yew, Giga Chad Otto Bismarck. These are a few people who changed in a single generation the fate of their nations (sometimes single handedly). For the akhand bharat types (the ones that arent stupid) i would recommend starting with Otto.
- Stay away from the media. Anything worth reading is hidden in congretional reports that no one in the media reads or obscure blog posts. If you read my link on the human info centipede you know what i am saying. If someone took the time to write a book on it you can trust that it is worth reading. Usually.
- Respect your adversary. It is important to not believe ones own propaganda. It is easy to get lost in it. You are no better. In fact i would suggest looking for propaganda from your side. It usually is a good skill to seperate the truth from the lies. Can you name some of this propaganda?
- Accept that we have no allies. India will always be on its own. Atleast for the near future. We are at the center of the "Old World" We will always be a battle ground. Any peace we make here, will be of our own work. No one wants a strong india. Not the US or China. China because we will be a competitor in their neighborhood security (doesnt matter if we wont be its what they think). US because they made the play book on this. Support france to beat the british and gain independence. Support the Russians to beat the Germans. Support the Chinese to beat the Russians. CAn you guess who is next in this pattern? We have friends of convenience. Until and unless we sign into a military alliance on paper, we have no allies. And even then who is to say that our military allies will actually help us? Just look at armenia, CSTO and Russia.
- Learn what india's geopolitical objectives are. If you wish to evaluate whether a developement is good or bad, you must have a metric of progress that you are aiming toward. It is not simply "counter china".

- Overtime you will become disillusioned. You will become frustrated. And if you do some of the things I have said you may grow to dislike a lot of things about india. I have simply given you the knowledge to fathom the monsters that hound this country. The courage and good character to face them and not run away will have to come from you.

Note: Some of the stuff in this doc is irrelevant because the Champion's Quest is free every game. The whole token system can be ignored. Big thanks to my friends who help create this doc with me. Happy nuking everyone!
Champion’s Quest
As of 06/08/2023 everyone has a token every game. No qualification is needed.
Whoever picks up the contract consumes their token and the quest begins.
Update: Since it's free and EVERYONE is going for the quest you need to land there first and grab it. Once grabbed immediately run away and survive! You'll have time to regain and get loadout before even needing to pick up the BE element.
An element being “revealed” means its location is shown as a large circular area that must be searched to find its exact location (similar to Intel contracts). These location indicators are not shown to the lobby, and initially the elements can only be picked up by a team member.
Each element has a unique (negative) effect associated with its acquisition:
It is possible the location of the nuclear canister is in the gas due to a zone-split. When this happens, the circle is guaranteed to merge back around the canister.
After arming the nuke, if conditions 1 & 2 are satisfied but the game ends due to there being no more enemy teams, the nuke will immediately detonate resulting in a win.
An LTV -- This is needed to transport the Be element safely to the canister. Other vehicles work but aren't as safe. Try to secure an LTV. They then do a typical strategy of trying to get money/prepare to secure a stronghold.
A light helo - This is used to secure a stronghold + blacksite. The movement speed of the light helo helps get to a stronghold first, which give a key to complete the black site.
-- EXTREMELY IMPORTANT -- All four players then try to rat/hold a strong location just as they would when on a normal streak game, while also keeping the Be location safe from enemy players. They do this for as long as possible, until either 1) the gas is going to obscure the Be, or 2) the bomb site location is revealed. At that point, someone takes the Be and takes it to the bomb site ASAP, ideally before the lobby realizes what’s going on and before they have time to get to the bomb site themselves.
By the time the Be has been deposited into the nuclear canister, Pu will have been revealed. Find and pick it up and deposit it into the canister when it appears safe to do so. You want to be holding the element for as little time as possible, so wait to pick it up until you’re confident you’re ready to go. Then do the same with T.
Ideally once T is deposited, the depositor would then immediately begin arming the nuke while their teammates throw smokes for cover.

Champion’s Quest
Intro
The goal is to find three elements, deposit them into the nuclear canister at the bomb site, arm the bomb, and secure the location until it goes off.Mechanics
Qualification
You need to place in 1st place five games in a row on either Battle Royal Quads, Trios, Duos, Solo. You can mix and match which modes are used but whichever you choose 5 consecutive games must be won. Your match history must show 5 wins in a row under “Battle Royal”.As of 06/08/2023 everyone has a token every game. No qualification is needed.
Token System
Completing qualification will grant you a Champion’s Quest Token. When playing another game of Warzone, this token allows you, and ONLY YOU, the ability to see three Champion’s Quest Contracts at the start of the match. All players with a token in your squad will see the locations of the contracts.Whoever picks up the contract consumes their token and the quest begins.
Steps to Complete the Champion’s Quest
Step 0) Determine if you need to pull out of the game and reset
Look for a Champion's Quest Contract near the center of the first circle, anything besides that and your chance of completing the quest goes significantly down. Because it's free just pull out of the game and re-queue for a better chance.Step 1) Start the quest
Once committed to the game the first step is to start the quest. When the game begins, there will be three golden icons scattered throughout the map. A player with a Champion’s Quest Token can interact with one which will begin the quest and inform the lobby that someone is attempting the Champion’s Quest. No location-specific information is shared with the lobby at this point.Update: Since it's free and EVERYONE is going for the quest you need to land there first and grab it. Step 2) Find and acquire the elements
This step requires finding three elements and picking them up. The first element is revealed ~10 seconds after starting the quest (ie. completing Step 1). The first element’s location will be somewhat close to the location of the contract you activate, so the icon you choose of the three makes a difference. The second and third elements are each revealed ~10 seconds after picking up the previous element.An element being “revealed” means its location is shown as a large circular area that must be searched to find its exact location (similar to Intel contracts). Each element has a unique (negative) effect associated with its acquisition:
- Beryllium (Be): Picking up Be causes its location to be shown to the entire lobby (similar to how a ‘most wanted’ contract is shown to the lobby). While you are holding Be, your location is revealed. If you drop it, its location continues to be revealed, but you can move without the lobby knowing where you are. This is the worst debuff by far.
- Plutonium (Pu): Picking up Pu causes it to emit radiation that damages you while holding it. Nearby players have their vision distorted as well. Additionally, it damages any vehicles you enter while holding it.
- Tritium (T): Picking up T scrambles the radar of you and any players near you and disables vehicles. This means you won’t have access to your tac map or minimap. Have to leg this one over - no LTV.
Step 3) Locate the bomb site
~Halfway through the 4th circle, the bomb site’s location will be revealed. Shortly after it is revealed, a plane will fly over and drop a nuclear canister. It lands ~30 seconds after the icon appears. You have five minutes from this point to arm the nuke. Multiple teams on the Champion's Quest all have the same nuclear canister. The first team to deposit their 3 elements and arm the nuke cancel the quest for the others.It is possible the location of the nuclear canister is in the gas due to a zone-split. When this happens, the circle is guaranteed to merge back around the canister.
Step 4) Arm the nuke
Once the nuclear canister has landed, you next must deposit all three elements into it, then arm it. You deposit the elements by interacting with the canister while the elements are in your inventory. Once all three elements are in it, you next must arm the canister. You do this by again interacting with it, but you need to hold ‘interact’ for ~10 seconds (similar to planting a bomb in S&D).Step 5) Defend the nuke
After the nuke is armed, a 2-minute timer begins. To win, two things need to happen:- Your squad does not get wiped.
- The bomb is not defused.
After arming the nuke, if conditions 1 & 2 are satisfied but the game ends due to there being no more enemy teams, the nuke will immediately detonate resulting in a win.
Timings
- Champion’s Quest begins immediately when the game starts
- Elements
- Be is revealed ~10 seconds after activating the quest
- Pu is revealed ~10 seconds after picking up Be
- T is revealed ~10 seconds after picking up Pu
- Bomb site location is revealed ~halfway through the 4th circle. That’s when the UI shows a white ‘4’ with ~30 seconds remaining. It lands ~30 seconds later when the white turns to red
- The nuke must be armed within 5 minutes of its location reveal
- Placing elements into the canister is instant
- Arming takes ~10 seconds of interaction
- Note that you only need to start arming within 5 minutes (eg. if you start after 4 minutes and 55 seconds, you will finish arming at 5 minutes and 5 seconds, but that’s okay)
- You must defend the nuke for 2 minutes after it is armed
- It takes enemies ~10 seconds to defuse the nuke
Strategy

- Smoke Grenades
- Every player should have at least 2 (in a backpack is fine).
- Used to move to/from the nuclear canister or arm the nuke safely.
- Do NOT throw smokes near the nuclear canister AFTER it has been armed. That's only giving other players cover as they attempt to defuse.
- Thermal Optics
- Used to see through smokes
- Important so you can actually shoot someone attempting to defuse in the smoke
- Mortar Strike
- Provides ~20 seconds of AoE denial around the nuclear canister.
- Used to deter enemies from moving on the canister to defuse it or used to down players near it.
- Precision Airstrike
- Similar to the Mortar Strike but this provides a guaranteed interruption to the defuse attempt.
- Advanced UAV
- Gives locations of ALL enemies which guarantees no one is attempting a defuse.
- Let us kill/avoid enemies by knowing their exact location.
- This should be used for the defense of the armed nuclear canister.
- Or this can be used during the migration of the Be/Pu/T elements. All enemy squads will know the Be carrier’s exact location so knowing where all of the enemies are lets you avoid them and deliver the Be element safely to the canister.
- UAV
- Used to secure the Pu and T elements safely.

As someone who was raised a "mild" Christian, I feel like I'm constantly deconstructing. I guess I would consider myself an agnostic atheist. I'm constantly changing my mind about what's out there. I have completely abandoned the idea that God is some higher being that cares about us. Recently, my cousin has fallen into the Christianity trap. She is in rehab for drugs. I guess it's a super religious rehab center. She has been posting non-stop Bible verses, etc. I feel bad for her for falling into the trap but at the same time, I wondered why it didn't work on me. I decided to pick up the Bible. I mean she's posting all these inspirations versus, I'm sure to find inspiration as she has.
I did not. I found no inspiration. It pushed me further away. I opened up to Psalms (not sure the one) and it was talking about "the holy people of this land", you know, the land of Israel. I'm a European-American! Isreal, Egypt, Jerusalem, etc is not the land of my people. Christianity is not my religion! How could I not see it before? We got white people, black people, Asian people, native people, etc, acting like this religion has anything to do with them. Prancing around like Christianity is our religion. It is not!
I just find it funny that we were once walking, talking about Isreal and shit. For many of us, this is not our true religion. We are not the holy people of the holy land. They died a long time ago.

So I work within a 5min drive of my fiancée and will frequently eat lunch with him. He works as IT in a drug rehab center. Today we were a bit tight on time and we didn't want to eat outside as it is a drug rehab center and there are frequently people outside using, so he brought me in to eat in his office. We sat in the common area in the center of the office with partitioned desk setups around, and I spent 10 minutes there before heading out.
His coworker came in and sat at his desk and we exchanged brief hellos. After I left, apparently the coworker accused my fiancée of violating HIPPA by bringing me in the office. All of the computers were off and locked except for the one belonging to the coworker who accused my fiancée, as he had apparently left the office with it still unlocked. Which is shocking for an IT personnel to not utilize proper cyber security protocol and not lock his computer anytime he steps away.
There were no discussions of any patients, and we weren't within any close enough range of the coworkers computer for me to even see anything (not that I even cared to try). Is this a HIPPA violation on my fiancée for bringing me in, or on the coworker for leaving potentially sensitive information on an unattended computer, or is no one in violation.
I am concerned as the coworker has apparently messaged HR about this whole situation.

So for me, it’s a really weird question that’s hard for me to be objective about — I feel like an a-hole posting this.
Im 7ft+ tall. I weight 260 +- 15lbs or so. I haven’t thought about it since high school… more importantly don’t really care unless docs start to scowl at me.
For comparison…. My pile of clothes at weight in is 16lbs.
Exercise 3-4 times or more per week; low weights and stuff without machines (boxing, swimming, floor. …but at my size — we get deep mass easy, I do my best to keep it off.
Not a pick on me, so they say, but I’m dense as a brick. I don’t feel large, not strong per say — beyond physics …did work security in college.
These classifications!
Slim — compared to what? a linebacker? — sure. Those skinny centers in the NBA? Nah — I’ve met a few them (there’s like 2 secret gyms that have equipment I fit on, lot of basketball players there). Eat 4k+ calories a day.
Athletic — nah. Don’t look like that. If anything, I’m faster than you’d expect and flexible/ nimble… box, dance, Pilates, weights, swimming…
Average — what I’m leaning towards — but a bonus of dragging this carcass around is do have a bit of free definition from long levers. Shoulders to hands, 4 abs are free.
Muscular — I’m not the mountain… heh I’d die. is this for the bulky? did this once in my life for rehab. 325+lbs. Bad for my joints, Drs hated it. Weird fetishy responses. People crossed the street.
Rest seems accurate enough — but don’t think think thats what search intended.
Anyway — trying to do truth in advertising — just like any other preference, but I don’t have to work hard at this.
I feels dumb, feeling the spotlight…but here’s my measurements —
36w - 40+ inseam, 28+ thigh, 17+shoe About 38 at ribs — 46ish chest, depends 17+ neck, 39+ arms 17+ biceps, 12 ish forearm No ass — bigger hands (~10” wrist to finger tip, palm basketballs, hide baseballs, etc)
Part I’d never say is at 40+ — keeping weight off is how my people get to old age; it’s not aesthetics.
I’m hoping it’s like real life, where few questions and it’s a non issue — with weird shoo’d away.
Sorry for the cringe — just a bit lost.

Hey stopdrinking, it's me, the guy who destroyed half his body in a failed suicide attempt. Thought I would drop in and give you guys an update on the last several weeks.
The hospital I was in searched for several weeks to find me a care facility or a rehab facility. According to them, facilities didn't want to take me until I could bear weight on my legs, and they were wary of admitting someone who had attempted suicide. Basically, I looked really bad on paper. Fair enough, I thought. I'll wait it out here in the hospital until I regain weight bearing status, and then they can more easily find me a place. Wrong. Very wrong. Their solution, keeping in mind that no one in my family had the capability of caring for me when I was wheelchair bound, was to send me to drumroll please a homeless shelter. Yes, a homeless shelter in a city I'm very much not familiar with. I cried when the nurse told me this. A transport van came and took me to the shelter. Once there, they took all my stuff, including the books and drawing supplies that were a key part of maintaining my positive attitude. This was around 2pm. They then escorted me into their chapel (major red flag for me), where I sat for several hours while old western movies were projected on a large screen. More people trickled in as the hours passed. Finally, at 6pm, dinner was served. No comment. When we shuffled back into the chapel, the stage had a bunch of speakers and music equipment. Cool, live music. No. What followed was a mandatory hour long sermon delivered by a twiggy fucking need singing shitty Christian pop songs and reiterating time and again how I would end up in hell without good old JC in my heart. He punctuated his sermon with plenty of "dudes" and "bros" to let us know he was a totally hip guy. I was furious. I have no problems with anyone's religion. But this shit was being shoved down my throat, and I am absolutely NOT ok with that. Once it was over I asked the guy next to me what we did now. "We go to bed." So I rolled down the hall and climbed into a bottom bunk in a room with 5 other bunk beds. At least 3 of my roommates snored. Somehow I managed a few hours of sleep. In the middle of the night I needed to use the bathroom. Well, my wheelchair wouldn't fit in their main bathroom. I was directed to the shower room. The tight confines there wouldn't allow me to turn into their handicapped stall. The man they had standing guard over the shower room had to lift up the back wheels of my chair to point me into the stall. Afterwards I went back to my bunk and laid awake with my eyes closed until the 6am wake up call. First thing in the morning, everyone is required to shower. Well, they didn't have accommodations for someone wheelchair bound in their showers, so I couldn't do that. At 7am, everyone was required to leave for the day until curfew at 4:30. I got a day pass, which meant I once again would be sitting in the chapel all day watching shitty daytime TV. At one point I asked for help to get into the bathroom stall. The workers looked confused. Turns out I shouldn't legally be there. Them helping me into the stall was a liability. After they made confused calls to the hospital I came from, the only logical conclusion anyone could draw was sending me to a different hospital.
So 911 was called and I was whisked by ambulance to the emergency room, where a confused staff tried to make sense of what was happening to me. I was admitted, and spent the next couple weeks there. On the 24th of last month, I was finally able to put weight on my legs. I walked for the first time in nearly 3 months. It hurt like hell. The combination of nerve pain, serious injuries, and atrophied muscles was certainly not fun. But I was ecstatic to reach the milestone. A hospital social worker soon informed me they found a rehab hospital for me. I looked at their website. Damn, it was a nice place. Really nice. Then I got a UTI and an infection in my lungs. Yay. Managed to kick it with a hefty several rounds of antibiotics. A few days later, I arrived at the rehab hospital, where I sit now.
I started with the daily 3 hours of physical and occupational therapy on Monday. According to my occupational therapist, I far surpassed the goals she set for me in the first few days. I'm walking at least a few hundred feet each day with the aid of a walker. In just 4 days I have felt an enormous amount of progress. Walking still hurts a fair amount when I put weight on my left leg, and I expect to use a walker for at least a few more weeks. Stairs are also gonna be an obstacle. But I fully believe I'm headed in the right direction.
I will still have a lot of work to do once I get back home. I have a lot of trust I need to start rebuilding with family and friends. I need to figure out what I'm going to do for work now. Going back to being a chef is kinda outta the question now. But that's OK, I can now go back to enjoying cooking for myself and people I love. I need to find a new place to live. I'm open but slightly hesitant about the prospect of a sober living house. I don't do well with roommates. But these are all issues to tackle as they come. Hopefully I won't have anymore hiccups that equal what I've already been through. Either way, I'll be sure to let you all know how it goes. Sorry about the long winded post! Talk to you folks soon!

The tight confines there wouldn't allow me to turn into their handicapped stall. The man they had standing guard over the shower room had to lift up the back wheels of my chair to point me into the stall. Afterwards I went back to my bunk and laid awake with my eyes closed until the 6am wake up call. First thing in the morning, everyone is required to shower. Well, they didn't have accommodations for someone wheelchair bound in their showers, so I couldn't do that. At 7am, everyone was required to leave for the day until curfew at 4:30. I got a day pass, which meant I once again would be sitting in the chapel all day watching shitty daytime TV. At one point I asked for help to get into the bathroom stall. The workers looked confused. Turns out I shouldn't legally be there. Them helping me into the stall was a liability. After they made confused calls to the hospital I came from, the only logical conclusion anyone could draw was sending me to a different hospital.
So 911 was called and I was whisked by ambulance to the emergency room, where a confused staff tried to make sense of what was happening to me. I was admitted, and spent the next couple weeks there. On the 24th of last month, I was finally able to put weight on my legs. I walked for the first time in nearly 3 months. It hurt like hell. The combination of nerve pain, serious injuries, and atrophied muscles was certainly not fun. But I was ecstatic to reach the milestone. A hospital social worker soon informed me they found a rehab hospital for me. I looked at their website. Damn, it was a nice place. Really nice. Then I got a UTI and an infection in my lungs. Yay. Managed to kick it with a hefty several rounds of antibiotics. A few days later, I arrived at the rehab hospital, where I sit now.
I started with the daily 3 hours of physical and occupational therapy on Monday. According to my occupational therapist, I far surpassed the goals she set for me in the first few days. I'm walking at least a few hundred feet each day with the aid of a walker. In just 4 days I have felt an enormous amount of progress. Walking still hurts a fair amount when I put weight on my left leg, and I expect to use a walker for at least a few more weeks. Stairs are also gonna be an obstacle. But I fully believe I'm headed in the right direction.
I will still have a lot of work to do once I get back home. I have a lot of trust I need to start rebuilding with family and friends. I need to figure out what I'm going to do for work now. Going back to being a chef is kinda outta the question now. But that's OK, I can now go back to enjoying cooking for myself and people I love. I need to find a new place to live. I'm open but slightly hesitant about the prospect of a sober living house. I don't do well with roommates. But these are all issues to tackle as they come. Hopefully I won't have anymore hiccups that equal what I've already been through. Either way, I'll be sure to let you all know how it goes. Sorry about the long winded post! Talk to you folks soon!

“Making food was a weapon?” GuruG asked incredulously, unintentionally translating the shuttle bug’s question as well.
“Worse,” Alan replied. “You gentle and enlightened beings probably aren’t as intrinsically tied to supply and demand as the rest of us. You do know that scarcity is a large factor when the value of something is determined. When that something is a commodity that is essential for life, this principle is even more keenly felt. With the development of Jovian rice, a completely synthetic foodstuff, Zeus Industries was once again the richest organization in the solar system… and the most powerful.”
“Powerful?”
“They now had an essentially infinite amount of food. Of course, being the goody-two-shoes bitch that he was,” Alan smirked, “Tak Nakamura started just handing that garbage out to anyone and everyone and had the ships to do so. Overnight, fully laden gas miners with escorts started making regular runs to Terra, Luna, Mars, and the rest of the inner solar system. That food could have been used to establish order and stabilize civilization. Instead, he just started dumping it on all of the thousands of factions warring with each other. This did have the immediate result of establishing some sort of ‘peace,’ but it was inherently flawed.”
“It also had the entire inner solar system kissing his ass,” Grace added.
“Well put,” Alan agreed, “The flow of food from Zeus had the whole of the inner solar system utterly dependent upon him, and the promise of food security even had some of our allies negotiating their defections to his banner.”
“So why didn’t this Jessica Morgan do the same?” GuruG asked, “For that matter, why didn’t your Same?”
“We couldn’t,” Grace laughed, “Think about it. We were the ‘bad guys.’ We had been kicking the shit out of everyone for years. There was no way they would let us into their buffet.”
“And with the food finally flowing again,” Alan said, “The dynamics of the situation shifted. Our siege of the inner solar system had been broken. Of course, we still had the men and the weapons. Or raids continued, but now they only had the effect of inflicting casualties, not starvation.”
“Your Sames kind of sucked,” GuruG said. “You are aware of this, correct?”
“Dude,” Grace laughed, “You have no idea.”
“The food was power,” Alan said, “And whoever controlled that food source controlled the solar system. We had to act. Our first move was a diplomatic one. Jessica Morgan offered an alliance with Zeus Industries, including a quite reasonable plan for governance and reconstruction.”
“And Tak told us to get fucked,” Grace snerked.
“And in about as many words,” Alan chuckled. “He told us, and perhaps accurately so, that nobody would accept us and that the best we could hope for was exile among the Kuipers… Considering what happened next, perhaps we should have taken that deal.”
“What happened?” GuruG (and the entire solar system) asked excitedly.
“War,” Alan said grimly. “Unconditional war, the greatest one in human history. Until now, Jessica had held back. She wanted to preserve as much of her forces and her supplies as possible. Now, that was no longer an option. We collected the full might of our houses and launched a full-bore attack on the inner solar system with the purpose of wiping out all vulnerable settlements and blockading Zeus. Their gas miners could run the blockade, but that’s where they took most of their losses. We never destroyed one, but we took a decent number of them out of action, enough to cause Zeus to drastically reduce food shipments. In addition, she finally unleashed her actual military forces and the remainder of her combat fleet. The actual Sol Wars had finally begun. And it was ugly. No quarter was given or received. Both sides descended into true savagery.”
“As opposed to everything you have already described?” GuruG asked incredulously.
“Yep,” Grace replied, “That was just the opening act for the real show.”
“There were two sides to the fight,” Alan said, “You had thousands of small groups of people rallying behind the banner of Zeus Industries, and you had the Confederacy of Sol, the remaining raider gangs, now quite large, and Jessica Morgan herself… I guess you could add Mars as a third side, but they did what they always did, hunker down behind their blockade of armed merchantmen and watched us kill each other while they feasted on bugs and fresh produce, the assholes.”
“They aren’t our favorite people,” Grace sneered, “And they are terrible in bed, like really bad.”
“I dislike an unpleasant bedmate as well,” GuruG said, “We often live together, and an inconsiderate roommate or even worse, bedmate, can be…”
“It’s a euphemism for being bad at sex,” Alan said. “Grace is also intentionally ‘needling’ me since she cannot elaborate further concerning this at this time.”
“Is this because of jealousy?” GuruG asked. “We have seen on the othernet that this can be an issue.”
“Not at all,” Alan said, “We were not betrothed at birth, nor were we exclusive for a great deal of our relationship. I’m just extremely curious concerning the details of this particular ‘dis-Grace.’ I’d be more than a little put out if she, as we put it, ‘fucked around’ at this point in our relationship, though.”
“So, she could have other partners then, but not now?”
“Goddamn right!” Grace exclaimed. “I’ll give Alan and whatever slag he screws a Dragon high colonic if I catch them. You don’t want one of those.”
“I can assure you that you will never catch me, darling,” Alan smirked.
“Don’t make me unstick myself,” Grace laughed as she pulled an arm free from the adhesive embrace of the shuttle bug’s colon and swatted him on the leg.
A rumbling roar shook the chamber for several seconds.
“That was our final retrograde burn,” GrurG said. “We will be entering the atmosphere soon.”
“Lovely,” Grace said dubiously.
“We still do have some time, though,” GuruG said hopefully.
“We’re approaching the end of the story,” Alan said. “War raged for several years laying waste to millions of people and hundreds of space stations and ships that had somehow managed to survive everything else. However, station by blasted station, inch by bloody inch, we were winning. While outnumbered, we still outgunned our enemies and the skill and experience of our warriors outshone theirs by many orders of magnitude.”
“And then everything went to shit,” Grace said.
“How?” GuruG asked. “You still had the advantage.”
“Had, dear GuruG,” Alan replied, “The operative word there is had. Zeus was desperate for weapons but as we have said, they lost the supply chains needed to make our weapons. Then someone decided to look back in history to the last global conflict in our people’s history, World War Three.”
“Wait. Do you mean your people have done something like this before?!?”
“Oh yeah,” Grace grinned, “Plenty of times. We hadn’t had a big one for almost a thousand years, but we did have some ugly ones. The ugliest before the Sol Wars was World War Three. Over a billion people bit the big one during that.”
“And that war was fought with much more primitive weapons,” Alan said, “The weapons of that era were little more than metal tubes in which a fast burning propellent, first gunpowder and then nitrocellulose was ignited, and the pressure accelerated a dense metal projectile, usually lead, to high velocities.”
“I know these!” GuruG said happily. “Flash roots! We still use them!”
“Of course, you would,” Alan chuckled.
“We use them for hunting… and for messing about. We make these geometric patterns on thin membranes and try to hit the center! It’s great fun.”
“They are also great for hunting people!” Grace enthused.
“They… would be…” GuruG said reluctantly, as if it was something that had never occurred to him before.
“But you use something else for that, right?” Grace asked.
“…Yes?”
“Same here,” Grace said, “And we were using ‘something else’. But I bet that it’s a lot easier to make(?) flash roots isn’t it?”
“Significantly so,” GuruG said. “We just grow them. And what we fire them out of…”
GuruG trailed off.
“Are simple devices easily made from iron alloys?” Alan asked.
“Yes. We usually use cupric alloys but yes, you could easily make them from iron.”
“Which is very abundant in any solar system, and as far as the propellent goes, they had an entire gas giant to mine for chemicals,” Alan continued, “Nobody except for primitive hunters, enthusiasts, and historical reenactors used them then, and they mostly preferred even more primitive examples than what was used for warfare at the end of our first gunpowder era. Not knowing exactly what one to use the Terrans just picked a popular one that would be easy to make, a weapon known as the AK-47. They were very simple to make. Any ship had the ability to make them. Hell, you can even make them by hand if you want. And Zeus had… has truly titanic industrial capacity. Once they made the first working prototypes, they were able to make them by the millions and the bullets by the billions. Soon, they were handing them out the same way they were handing out food… and that was the beginning of the end for us. We had better weapons and better warriors, but we didn’t have the means to replenish either. For every one of our soldiers that fell, we lost years of training, maybe even a lifetime of it, and weapons that were truly irreplaceable. When one of their fighters fell, another hundred took their place. Every ‘soft target’ we used to raid suddenly had people all armed with primitive, but very effective weapons. Our numbers fell and theirs increased by the thousands every single day.”
“And that wasn’t the worst part,” Grace said. “The ancient rifles were a big hit. So why not look at the rest of the goodies from that era? They started making guns big ones as well as guided missiles more than capable of taking down any ship we had and started putting those motherfuckers on everything.”
“A tactic they use to this very day,” Alan said. “Every one of their ‘civilian’ merchant fleet can turn into a missile boat within an hour. They’ve used this to very good effect. Attacking anywhere in the Republic, especially Sol, is a death sentence.”
“We had some brilliant military leaders,” Grace said, “But they had General Attrition leading them and he is a bitch.”
“The dynamic shifted,” Alan said grimly. “Even though they would lose a hundred fighters to each one of ours, they still would win. If they lost ten fighters to each one of ours, they would call it a tactical triumph. We literally could not win. So, once again, inch by bloody inch, they took the system back. And they weren’t taking prisoners. At first, they would board a ship or a station and take it. After a while, they just used missiles and wiped us out by the thousands, by the hundreds of thousands.”
“And not all of them were combatants,” Grace said sourly. “They didn’t care. Then again we didn’t care either, so I guess we had it comin’.”
“Even we have to admit this,” Alan said ruefully, “We definitely reaped what we sowed. We would have been completely wiped out as a people if it wasn’t for the intervention of the Juon Empire.”
“How did they get involved?”
“There is a very old red dwarf near Sol that we call Bernard’s Star,” Alan said. “It’s old enough to be of scientific interest, and the Juon sent a scientific expedition to it. It was close enough to where the instruments and scanners they brought to study the star were sufficient to detect radio transmissions from Sol. Their first reaction was to not get involved. We were a bit farther out than they wanted to expand and the situation was far too chaotic. There were tentative plans to establish contact once things settled down, but they never did. Ultimately, they decided that if they wanted to establish contact with our species, they had better do so while there was a species left to contact.”
“So they rolled in,” Grace said, “With real warships. They also brought ship after ship filled with good food, supplies, consumer goods… you know, the whole beads and blankets thing.”
“Beads and blankets?”
“Yeah, you didn’t have colonialism either,” Grace replied, “Cheap presents for savages. For a few loads of cheap crap, they were able to basically buy the Terrans. They are kind of whores like that.”

“You have to get me a video!” Grace exclaimed. “Anyway, the Empire showed up and annexed the system without so much as a single shot being fired. They tried to broker a peace, but when they realized that they couldn’t even get us in the same room without us trying to kill each other they split us up. They sent us into the cold dark of the outer solar system and gave the Terrans all the good spots.”

“Whatever,” Grace huffed. “So that’s how it was for a few decades…”

“Goddamit, Alan…” Grace grumbled, “Anyway, we were stuck out there for thirty-four years until the Terrans decided they didn’t want to be in the Empire anymore and rebelled. We knew the second they stopped shooting at the Juon, they would come for us, so we got the fuck out of there and went to the Federation.”
“And we formed one of the three major populations of humanity,” Alan said. “Where everything was pretty good until…”
