2023.05.22 18:41 Clegko Question About Speed Limiter?

Howdy, y'all. Just heard this story on the news and apparently a UHAUL truck got in a high speed chase with the cops around here, and the cops say they were going 95 mph... but aren't the trucks governed to 75 mph or thereabouts?

2023.03.28 17:39 sarmmule safety of area near braddock road station

hi everyone! i’m a single female looking to move to an apartment complex near the braddock metro. (meridian at braddock or the dalton, around there!) i liked how it was close to old town, and a metro.
I saw an article (https://www.alxnow.com/2023/03/23/alexandrias-gun-related-crime-skyrocketed-100-in-2022/) on violence increased specifically around that area.
does anyone in the area have any input on how they feel living here? anything would be so helpful and much appreciated! :)

2023.02.09 18:25 nhawks_ [ALXnow] Power plant redevelopment team talks ‘woonerf’ vs pedestrian-only design

The redevelopment team is evaluating two design options for the area around the power plant - a "woonerf" design that slows down vehicle traffic in a shared space, and a pedestrian-only design.
However, the city has decided to include vehicle traffic and parking in the design, which may not align with the aim of promoting pedestrian safety and reducing vehicle traffic.
This decision is disappointing and adds to the existing demand for more car spaces, particularly in Old Town.
It is not clear at what stage the process is, but it may be possible to provide feedback to the city by expressing support for a pedestrian-only design with exceptions for emergency vehicles, through email.

The fast-food chain Five Guys will move its corporate headquarters to 1940 Duke Street in Alexandria next year after roughly a decade in Lorton. 2022.10.19 00:10 happyschmacky How many more pedestrians have to die / get seriously injured before the police do something?

Spurred on by https://www.alxnow.com/2022/10/17/pedestrian-critically-injured-in-landmark-crash/ and the fact ALX is the most dangerous city in VA for pedestrians https://patch.com/virginia/oldtownalexandria/alexandria-historic-district-most-dangerous-pedestrians-study.
Seriously though? I've been struck multiple times; one time badly where the driver fled. I've reported every hit and near miss to the police and every time it's "all we can do is call the driver and ask them to be more considerate". We're dying out here, at the hands of people who think the 10 seconds to stop at a red light and check for pedestrians is worth more than a human life, and it's time this was cracked down on.

2021.12.09 20:02 autotldr Torpedo Factory plans could include cafe, maker-space, and 'gloryholes'

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 65%. (I'm a bot)
The city is looking at options to move things around in the Torpedo Factory and insert some surprises into activity holes on the ground floor.
In a Torpedo Factory Art Center Implementation Strategy Update meeting, Diane Ruggiero, deputy director of recreation, parks and cultural activities, outlined options being reviewed that could lead to some radical changes for the Torpedo Factory.
In addition to an option to keep the Torpedo Factory more-or-less as it currently exists, other options being considered include a potentially expensive rooftop addition or handing management of the Torpedo Factory's ground floor off to a private-public partnership.
In particular, Ruggiero said part of the ground floor could be used as a cafe.
The idea faced some pushback from others in the meeting, who noted that previous cafes on the ground floor of the Torpedo Factory have failed, but Ruggiero said the hope plans for further opening of the ground to the rest of the waterfront could make it more accessible.
Ruggiero said plans for the Torpedo Factory could entail pushing more of the artists studios higher in the building to open up room for a maker-space on the ground floor - a sort of collaborative workspace - and a glass blowing studio.

The Alexandria City Council voted to temporarily reinstate school resource officers after teacher and parent outcry over a spate of violent fights at the public schools, which some have blamed on the council voting to do away with the officers last spring.
"If our schools are deemed or even perceived unsafe, this impedes our ability to fulfill this mission and we know that teaching, learning and are thwarted when our students and staff are not provided with he optimal learning environment" said Alexandria Schools Superintendent Gregory Hutchings at the city council meeting.
The city council ultimately voted 4-3 to temporarily reinstate SROs in schools, after more than six hours of debate on the matter Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning, ABC 7 reported.
"Our students are sending us warning shots, literally warning shots" Peter Balas, Alexandria City High School Principal said at the meeting. "Please reconsider this. My staff, my students. We’re not okay."
The Alexandria City Council decided in May - following a year of national protests calling for police departments be defunded - to remove the school resource officers, and reallocate $800000 in funding to hire mental health counselors.
The resource officers were removed at the beginning of this school year.
Repeated videos soon surfaced of students brawling and fighting on various school campuses, which parents and teachers said is due to lack of SROs on campuses. A shooting even occurred just a few blocks from Alexandria High School and injured a student in September, and a student was arrested last week for allegedly bringing a gun to school.
"This was going to happen" one parent told ALXnow earlier this year after video surfaced of students brawling in Alexandria City High School’s cafeteria. "Take away the police from inside schools and you’re going to see people get hurt."
Parents also held a rally to get(...)
