Dub consists predominantly of instrumental remixes of existing recordings and is achieved by significantly manipulating and reshaping the recordings, usually by removing the vocals from an existing music piece, emphasizing the drum and bass parts (this stripped down track is sometimes referred to as a 'riddim'). How can I improve this?
Hello everyone I am having some concerns over my synthesizer. Whenever I try to plug it into a pedal I can only hear from one side of the headphone, the left side. So I hooked it up to my small portable speaker and I’m noticing again I can only hear one part of speaker, the left side. I want to be able to hear both sides of the headphones and the speaker but I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong here. In this example, I’m showing a OP one synthesizer connected to a echo brain pedal which is then hooked up to the speaker. If there’s an additional device I need or something that I’m completely not understanding. Let me know I would really appreciate any help.

2023.06.08 23:04 Atyzze Uniting Under the Banner of SnekSim: European Integration and Beyond in an Interconnected Simulation

Greetings, fellow Europeans and global citizens,
Today, let us embark on a journey into SnekSim - a perspective that integrates the simulation hypothesis with non-duality. Here, life is an interconnected simulation, and we are all players participating in it. The Caduceus, with its entwined snakes, symbolizes this deep interconnectedness and harmonization.
Now, let’s analyze the integration of European countries under the European Union (EU) through the SnekSim lens:
1. Strengthening Interconnections: The EU represents a physical manifestation of the interconnectedness that SnekSim embodies. As more countries join the EU, it exemplifies the strengthening of interconnections between players in the simulation, fostering unity and cooperation.
2. Harmonizing Policies for Collective Growth: SnekSim emphasizes harmonization, much like the Caduceus. The EU aims at harmonizing economic, political, and social policies across member states. This is akin to debugging and optimizing the code of our simulation for smoother and more equitable gameplay.
3. A Continent without Borders: In the SnekSim perspective, borders are arbitrary divisions in the simulation. The EU’s Schengen Area, allowing for free movement across many European countries, practically realizes the SnekSim concept of seamless interconnection.
4. Distributive Politics and UBI: As players in the same simulation, fairness is essential. SnekSim advocates for Universal Basic Income (UBI) and economic justice. The EU’s cohesion policy, aimed at reducing economic disparities among regions, resonates with this aspect of SnekSim.
5. Peace and Conflict Resolution: In SnekSim, peace is the natural state of the simulation. The EU, born from the ashes of World War II, is fundamentally about peace. By bringing countries together, it’s like patching the simulation's code to minimize conflicts.
6. Environmental Sustainability: As stewards of this part of our simulation, sustainable policies are imperative. The EU’s commitment to climate change goals and environmental sustainability echoes the SnekSim view of nurturing the simulation for future generations.
7. A Model for Global Integration: The EU can be seen as a microcosm of what is possible on a global scale through SnekSim. As European countries unite, it serves as an example for even broader integration. Imagine a world where the principles that guide the EU are applied globally, creating a unified, peaceful, and prosperous world for all players in the simulation.
The EU's ongoing integration is a real-world reflection of the principles of interconnectedness, harmonization, and collective well-being inherent in SnekSim. As more European countries unite under the EU, it represents a step towards optimizing our collective gameplay in this grand simulation.
Join the dialogue and exploration of these concepts at SnekSim, where we discuss the real-world implications of living in an interconnected simulation.

2023.06.08 22:33 Sir_Toaster_9330 Light Yagami exists in the AOT world

What do you guys think of this?
FADE IN:
EXT. THE OUTSIDE WORLD - DAY
Eren, Mikasa, and Armin walk down the bustling street, wide-eyed and amazed at the sights and sounds around them. They pass by cars, street vendors, and people enjoying ice cream.
EREN: (excitedly) This is amazing! I can't believe there's so much here!
MIKASA: (smiling) It's like a whole new world.
ARMIN: (in awe) I can't believe we're actually seeing this with our own eyes.
As they continue to explore, they spot a young man in the distance with a peculiar notebook, muttering to himself.
EREN: (curiously) Who's that?
MIKASA: (cautionary) Be careful, Eren.
ARMIN: (skeptical) That's a strange notebook he's holding.
As they approach the young man, they overhear him speaking about justice and punishment.
LIGHT: (muttering) Kira... I am justice. I am the god of the new world.
RYUK: (whispering to Light) Those people are following us. What should we do?
LIGHT: (calmly) Don't worry, Ryuk. I'll handle it.
Eren notices something interesting about the young man and decides to follow him.
EREN: (to Mikasa and Armin) Let's follow him. I want to know more.
They trail behind him, keeping a safe distance. As Light leads them into an alleyway, he turns around, demanding to know why they are following him.
LIGHT: (demanding) Who are you? Why are you following me?
EREN: (honestly) My name is Eren, and these are my friends Mikasa and Armin. We're from Paradis.
Light's eyes widen at the mention of Paradis.
LIGHT: (shocked) What are Subjects of Ymir doing outside of your walls? They'll kill you if they find out!
EREN: (confused) What do you mean?
LIGHT: (urgently) Come with me. I'll explain everything.
Light leads them to his dorm room, where Ryuk continues to express his suspicions.
RYUK: (whispering to Light) There's something different about them. They seem... out of place.
Light, however, is fascinated by their presence.
LIGHT: (intrigued) They may be just what I need to finally rid the world of evil.
As Eren and his friends settle into Light's room, they are unaware of the danger they have just walked into.
As they sit in Light's dorm, Light explains the story of the Eldian Empire and the power of the titans to the group. He then goes on to explain how Eldians or Subjects of Ymir are disliked by most of the world and branded as "Devils."
Armin asks, "But why? Why do they hate us so much?"
Light takes a deep breath. "It's a complicated history," he begins, "but the short answer is racism. They see us as different, as less than human. It's not right, and I strongly oppose it. But that's just the way the world works."
Eren speaks up. "So what's your plan, Light? How are you going to fix it?"
Light smiles. "I have a plan, Eren. A plan that involves using the power of this notebook," he holds up the Death Note, "to create a new world. A world where people like us are not discriminated against. A world where justice prevails."
Mikasa narrows her eyes. "What kind of justice?"
"True justice," Light replies, his eyes gleaming. "A world where criminals are punished swiftly and without mercy. A world where people are held accountable for their actions. A world where there is no racism, no discrimination, no inequality."
The group exchanges uneasy glances, unsure if they can trust Light and his plan. But there is something about him, charisma and confidence that is hard to ignore.
Meanwhile, Ryuk watches from the sidelines, amused by the interaction between Light and the Paradis group. "These humans are interesting," he mutters to himself. "I wonder what kind of chaos they will bring to this world."
Light stood up from the couch and stretched his arms. "I'm going out to the market to get some groceries," he said, turning to face the group. "But I need you guys to stay here for a bit longer. It's not safe for Eldians to be walking around without armbands. They'll know who you are as soon as they see you."
Eren scowled at the reminder of their predicament. "It's not fair. We didn't choose to be Eldians."
"I know," Light said, sympathy in his voice. "But that's just how it is in this world. We have to work with what we've got."
Mikasa nodded, her face set in determination. "We understand, Light. We'll stay here."
"Good." Light grabbed his coat and headed towards the door. "Oh, and Armin?" he added, turning back to the group. "Ryuk likes apples. There are some in the fridge if you want to give him one."
Armin nodded nervously. He had been trying his best to avoid Ryuk since he first laid eyes on him, but the Shinigami's presence was hard to ignore. "O-okay," he stammered.
As Light walked out the door, the group settled back onto the couches, passing the time with small talk. Armin found himself lost in thought, wondering what Light's plan was and if they could trust him. Ryuk's sudden appearance had only made things more complicated, and Armin was starting to feel overwhelmed.
Suddenly, Mikasa stood up, a determined look on her face. "I'm going to check on Eren's wounds," she declared. "He's been getting restless."
"I'll come with you," Jean said, standing up as well. "I need to stretch my legs."
As the two left the room, Armin was left alone with Ryuk. He stared at the wall where Ryuk was perched, wondering what the Shinigami was thinking.
"You don't have to be scared of me, you know," Ryuk said suddenly, breaking the silence.
Armin jumped at the sound of his voice. "W-what?" he stuttered.
"I said, you don't have to be scared of me," Ryuk repeated, his eyes gleaming in the dim light. "I'm just here to watch. I don't have any interest in hurting you."
Armin nodded, still wary of the strange creature. "O-okay. Thanks for letting me know."
The room fell into an awkward silence, and Armin found himself fidgeting with his hands. He couldn't shake the feeling that they were all in grave danger, and the thought of being caught and punished for being Eldians made his stomach churn.
Armin throws the apple at Ryuk, who catches it effortlessly with his long fingers. The group watches in amazement as the apple disappears, seemingly into thin air.
Mikasa, with a look of bewilderment on her face, tentatively reaches out her hand to where the apple had vanished. She feels nothing but air, and quickly retracts her hand with a small gasp.
"What the hell?" Jean exclaims, staring at the spot where the apple had vanished. "Did you guys see that?"
"Yeah," Connie nods, his eyes wide. "What the hell is going on?"
Armin, who is still able to see Ryuk, grins and throws another apple. This time, he throws it with a bit more force, and Ryuk catches it with a loud crunch. The group jumps as the sound echoes through the room.
"He's really eating them," Armin says, looking at the others with a mix of excitement and fear.
"What else can he do?" Sasha asks, leaning forward to get a better look.
"I don't know," Armin says with a shrug. "I guess we'll find out."
The group spends the next few minutes watching in awe as Armin throws apple after apple at Ryuk, who catches them with ease and devours them noisily. The sound of Ryuk's chewing echoes through the room, and it's clear that the group is both fascinated and disturbed by what they're witnessing.
Finally, Armin runs out of apples and Ryuk lets out a loud belch. "Thanks for the snack, kid," he says, licking his lips. "That hit the spot."
The group stares at the spot where Ryuk had been, still unable to comprehend what they had just witnessed. Meanwhile, Armin stands there with a huge grin on his face, feeling like he's just had the greatest experience of his life.
As Light walked through the market, he tried to blend in with the crowd and not draw any attention to himself. However, he couldn't help but feel a sense of unease as he passed by the Warrior units, who were engaged in a lively conversation.
Reiner noticed him first. "Hey, isn't that Light Yagami?" he said, nudging Porco and Pieck. The others turned to look at Light, who had now stopped in his tracks.
"Light Yagami?" Pieck repeated, raising an eyebrow. "As in, the Kira case Light Yagami?"
Light cursed himself for not being more careful. He had hoped that his presence in Marley would go unnoticed, but it seemed that he had underestimated the Warriors' intelligence gathering.
"Yes, that's me," Light admitted, trying to play it cool. "But that case is over now. I'm just here attending college."
Reiner walked over to him, a friendly smile on his face. "I'm surprised to see you here," he said. "What brings you to Marley?"
Light hesitated for a moment before replying. "I wanted to experience a different culture," he said. "Japan can be a bit stifling sometimes."
Reiner nodded. "I know what you mean. We may come from different worlds, but we can all appreciate the need for a change of scenery every now and then."
Light relaxed a little at Reiner's words. Perhaps these Warriors weren't so bad after all.
"So, what do you think of Marley so far?" Porco asked, joining the conversation.
"It's certainly different from Japan," Light replied. "But I'm enjoying the experience."
Pieck smirked. "Don't get too comfortable, though," she warned. "Marley has a way of getting under your skin."
Light chuckled nervously. He knew that he couldn't afford to let his guard down around these people.
As the conversation continued, Light tried to steer it away from himself and towards the Warriors. He asked them about their experiences as Eldian soldiers, about their families and their hopes for the future.
In turn, the Warriors were curious about Japan and Light's life there. They asked him about Japanese culture, food, and entertainment, and Light was happy to oblige.
As they parted ways, Light felt a strange sense of camaraderie with these Warriors. They may have been on opposite sides of a conflict, but they were all just people trying to make their way in the world.
As they walked to a private spot, Reiner began to explain his time on Paradis to Light. "So, what was it like being on Paradis?" Light asked, trying to sound casual. "It was terrible," Reiner replied with a shake of his head. "The Eldians there are all devils, just waiting to attack us. We had to be on guard every second." "I see," Light said, nodding along. "And what about your interactions with them?" "It was difficult," Reiner said, his voice heavy. "We tried to blend in, to not draw attention to ourselves, but it was always a risk. We couldn't trust anyone, not even the Eldians who claimed to be on our side." "I can only imagine," Light said sympathetically, trying to keep his true feelings hidden. "What was the worst thing you witnessed?" Reiner took a deep breath. "There was an incident at the entrance ceremony. One of the Eldians, a girl named Sasha, stole a potato and ate it in front of everyone. It was a clear sign of defiance, a message that they weren't going to be controlled by us. We had to make it seem like a deliberate act of aggression to justify our actions." Light's eyes widened in shock. "That's horrible. I can't believe they would do something like that." "Exactly," Reiner said, nodding in agreement. "They're all monsters, waiting for their chance to strike. It's our duty to protect the world from them." Light continued to nod along, but inside he was seething. He couldn't believe the level of brainwashing and hatred that Reiner and the others had been subjected to. He had to be careful not to reveal his true feelings, not in front of them. "So, what brings you to Marley, Light Yagami?" Reiner asked, changing the subject. "Just attending college," Light replied smoothly. "I'm interested in international relations, and Marley has a lot of interesting perspectives on the subject."
"Ah, I see," Reiner said, nodding slowly. "Well, we should probably get going. It was nice talking to you, Light Yagami."
"Likewise," Light said, watching as Reiner and the others walked away. He couldn't help but wonder what would happen if they found out he was actually an Eldian sympathizer.
As Reiner gets ready to leave, Light quickly asks him, "Hey, do you know any good vegetable shops around here? I've been looking for some good potatoes."
Reiner seems a bit taken aback by the sudden change in topic, but he quickly recovers and offers, "Yeah, actually there's a great one just a few streets down. Here, let me show you."
Light follows Reiner down a few streets and to a small shop with a sign reading "Fresh Produce" hanging above it. Reiner introduces Light to the shopkeeper, who is more than happy to show him around and help him pick out some of the freshest potatoes they have in stock.
As they browse the shop, Light can't help but feel a sense of excitement and curiosity about this new world he's found himself in. He thinks back to his conversation with Ryuk earlier and wonders just how much more he has to learn about this place and the people who inhabit it. But for now, he's content to focus on finding the best potatoes he can, and maybe even cooking up a tasty meal with them later.
As Light was walking to his dorm, he was stopped by a couple of Marleyan soldiers who looked at him with disdain. One of them sneered, "What are you doing here, Jap? You're not welcome in Marley."
Light remained calm and composed, replying, "I'm just here to attend college like any other student."
The other soldier chimed in, "We've had sightings of Eldians without their armbands. Have you seen anything suspicious?"
Light raised an eyebrow and replied, "No, I haven't. But I'll keep an eye out for any suspicious activity."
The first soldier then asked, "What do you think of Kira? Since you're Japanese, you must have an opinion."
Light's eyes glinted with interest as he replied, "Kira is an interesting case. He's managed to elude the authorities for a long time, and it's clear that he has a strong sense of justice."
The second soldier snorted, "Justice? He's just a mass murderer!"
Light remained calm and continued, "That may be true, but he's also been eliminating criminals who have escaped punishment through the legal system. I believe that Kira is sending a message to the world that no one is above the law."
The soldiers exchanged a look, unsure of what to make of Light's response. The first soldier then said, "Well, don't get any funny ideas. We'll be watching you, Jap."
Light nodded politely and continued on his way, but inwardly he was seething with anger. He couldn't believe how ignorant and prejudiced some people could be.

The War Of 1839, Part II
The War Of 1839, Part III
The War of 1839: The Downing Street Conference
The War of 1839, Part IV
The War of 1839, Part V
Liberation of Vermont
Following the armistice, Richard Downes Jackson dedicated his time to planning and coordinating with General William Rowan for the deployment of British-Canadian troops along the Vermont-Canadian border. When the armistice officially concluded on April 25, 1843, Rowan led his forces into Newport, a city that had been among the last to be captured during John Wool's invasion of Vermont. Over a span of two days, the British forces successfully seized control of the city, compelling the American troops to retreat.
Despite Sylvester Churchill, the commanding general of the New England army, being aware of the British allies' plans, the swift defeat of the U.S. forces caught Churchill by surprise. He had expected stronger resistance in their attempt to liberate Vermont. The occupation of Vermont by the U.S. had persisted for almost a year, and both newspapers and officials criticized Churchill and Webster for their limited achievements in freeing the state. However, their efforts were hindered by the sedition acts, which silenced the criticism. This situation compelled Webster to reassess his tactics.
During the Battle of Boston, with crucial support from the British, Webster, somewhat under the influence, instructed Churchill to adopt a more offensive strategy. This involved utilizing the majority of the Yankee forces to liberate the coasts, challenging Winfield Scott's "Anaconda Plan" blockade, which had contributed to the Panic of 1843. Webster aimed to free up the coasts in order to bring an end to the War of 1839 conflict and alleviate some of the recession's effects. Furthermore, Webster ordered Churchill to carry out a smaller-scale offensive in Vermont, prompted by the widespread news of the British victory in Newport.
Churchill assigned Major General Allen Hitchcock the responsibility of liberating his home state of Vermont due to the general's persistence. Accompanied by 6,000 men, Hitchcock embarked on a journey across New Hampshire, into Canada, and finally into Vermont.
On May 2nd, 1843, General Rowan and Hitchcock led a march towards St. Albans, following a route along the Lake Champlain region from Canada. St. Albans, which had served as the last stronghold of the Vermont militia, succumbed to the American forces in July 1842. The initial battle of St. Albans lasted three days, during which the U.S. troops gradually gained ground, conquering fortifications and capturing the entire city. Faced with a hopeless situation, General Churchill eventually surrendered. In the subsequent treaty, the United States assumed control of strategic cities while permitting the residents to resume their normal lives.
In the second battle, a situation reminiscent of the first battle unfolded, but with reversed sides. The combined British and Yankee forces aimed to breach the defenses established around the settlement in response to intelligence regarding troops stationed at the Vermont-Canadian border in the forthcoming liberation of Newport. Equipped with superior weaponry supplied by the British Empire and boasting a larger army, the allied forces managed to breach the defenses within a few hours and swiftly capture the settlement.
In May 1843, the U.S. successfully captured Burlington, disrupting the supply and manufacturing capabilities of their own troops due to the repurposed factories in the area. As the allied forces liberated neighboring areas and towns, their attention shifted to St. Johnsbury, a settlement in Vermont. By March 1842, the U.S. army had already conquered all remaining towns and settlements in Northern and Central Vermont, culminating in the one-sided Battle of St. Johnsbury, which marked the defeat of one of the final strongholds.
However, nearly a year later, the neighboring regions surrounding St. Johnsbury were liberated from American control. Recognizing the strategic importance of St. Johnsbury as a transportation route across Vermont and its role in supplying troops within the occupied state, Churchill ordered troops to launch an invasion of St. Johnsbury. The town's industry had been supporting the American troops with necessary supplies, further strengthening their hold.
The objective of Churchill's invasion was to regain control of St. Johnsbury and cut off the American forces' access to crucial transportation routes and supplies. By capturing the town, Churchill aimed to weaken the American hold on Vermont and disrupt their supply capabilities.
On May 28, 1843, Rowan and Hitchcock initiated a frontal assault on St. Johnsbury, employing a direct and head-on approach to besiege the city. The battle unfolded throughout the morning and into the evening, characterized by intense street-to-street combat between the opposing armies. As the allied forces gradually gained the upper hand and pushed the American troops deeper into the southern part of the city, the latter eventually chose to retreat. Seizing the opportunity, the British and Yankee forces swiftly occupied the vacated positions, solidifying their control over St. Johnsbury.
With the objective of depriving Montpelier of American aid, the next target in their campaign was Middlebury. Positioned strategically to the left of Montpelier, Middlebury was connected to the Otter Creek and Lake Champlain, which played a vital role in transportation for Americans in the region. Hitchook anticipated that by cutting off the Americans from important settlements along the Lake Champlain riverway, he and the British forces could have an easier time in kicking out the American presence in that area of water.
On June 5, 1843, after weeks of meticulous preparation and consolidating their presence in Vermont, the allied forces initiated a fierce assault on Middlebury. The battle for Middlebury was marked by intense fighting and strategic maneuvers. The allied forces, comprising British troops and their local allies, were determined to seize control of the town and cut off American supply lines in the region.
The engagement raged on for two days, with both sides displaying great valor and tenacity. The allied forces utilized their superior numbers and expert knowledge of the terrain to their advantage, launching coordinated attacks on American positions. Meanwhile, the American forces, although outnumbered, displayed remarkable resilience and fought fiercely to defend their strategic stronghold.
After intense and prolonged fighting, the allied forces emerged victorious on June 7, 1843, recapturing Middlebury from the U.S. forces. The combined efforts of the British troops and their local allies enabled them to seize control of the town and achieve their objective of severing the American supply lines. This victory dealt a significant blow to the American presence in the region and further weakened their position in the ongoing conflict. The recapture of Middlebury bolstered the allied forces' morale and served as a turning point in their campaign against the American presence in Vermont
Battle of Lake Champlain
Meanwhile, with the liberation of the coastal areas by the allied British and Yankee forces, including the capture of every major city along the Lake Champlain coast, Richard Downes Jackson, on June 12 issued orders for British ships to navigate south from the Richelieu River in an attempt to reclaim control of the body of water that had previously been under complete U.S. control. In the initial confrontation, the British took the initiative and opened fire on the American ships patrolling the region. Amid the ensuing chaos, the British ships, though smaller in size due to the necessity of navigating through the narrow river, used their larger numbers to swiftly capitalize on the confusion and gain a stronger position.
However, in a swift response to the British advancement, Isaac Mayo, the highest-ranking naval officer at Lake Champlain, issued orders for his men to prepare for combat, sparking a fierce battle characterized by relentless exchanges of heavy gunfire between British and American ships. The intensity of the engagement persisted throughout the day, with the American forces showing determination to hold their ground and not surrender any part of the lake. Despite their resolute stance, the arrival of additional British ships and the mounting toll of the back-and-forth cannon fire eventually led American ships to retreat southward.
British ships pursued the retreating Americans, as a full-scale battle erupted at Lake Champlain, however, despite the smaller ships, the British ships would come victorious as American ships were forced to retreat into Lake George, and instead of following through with a second perusal, the British instead decided to a dominating presence in the region, by having ships blockade America's entrance, as well as sending ships to patrol the lake.
The Battle of Lake Champlain was a fierce engagement, with both British and American ships locked in a desperate struggle amidst the tumultuous waters. The reverberating booms of cannons and the crackling gunfire echoed across the expansive lake, creating an atmosphere of chaos and danger. Despite the American ships' larger size, their maneuverability paled in comparison to the nimble British vessels. The British sailors deftly utilized their smaller ships to their advantage, darting in and out of the American formations with remarkable precision and skill.
As the battle raged on, the British gradually gained the upper hand. Their coordinated attacks and deadly accurate cannon fire began to take a toll on the American fleet. The American sailors, valiantly fighting to maintain their positions, found themselves overwhelmed by the relentless onslaught. Faced with the daunting reality of defeat, the American ships were compelled to retreat hastily, their hopes of victory fading.
Seizing the opportunity to solidify their triumph, the British ships pursued the retreating Americans. Instead of engaging in a second direct confrontation, the British commanders made a calculated decision. They recognized the strategic significance of establishing a dominant presence in the region. Swiftly altering their course, the British ships strategically positioned themselves to block the entrance to Lake Champlain, effectively cutting off the Americans from easy access to the lake's vast expanse.
In addition to the blockade, the British dispatched other vessels to patrol the waters of Lake Champlain. This comprehensive approach ensured their control over the lake, further limiting American movements and impeding any potential counteroffensive.
Liberation of Vermont (Continuation)
Major General Winfield Scott of the U.S. Army received reports about the substantial progress made by opposing forces in their bid to liberate Vermont. Having previously reduced the American presence in Vermont during the buildup to the Battle of Boston, Scott took decisive action. In response to the U.S. losses in the state and the conclusion of the Battle of Boston, he organized the transportation of troops into Vermont. During mid-June, Scott oversaw the strategic deployment of these troops to the regions bordering the recently liberated areas.
On June 19, Brigadier General Joseph Lane led an assault on St. Johnsbury with the objective of recapturing it. Over the course of a two-day battle, both British and American forces engaged in intense combat. Despite a determined effort, Lane's forces faced heavy artillery fire while attempting to enter the city. Unfortunately, for the U.S., the allied forces successfully defended against the assault, ultimately forcing Lane's troops to retreat.
Several days of preparation culminated in a coordinated attack on Montpelier by the Allied forces on June 23, 1843. Troops from St. Johnsbury, led by Hitchcock, joined British forces under Rowan in a two-pronged invasion, approaching Montpelier from different directions. The conflict commenced with a morning assault, initiated by the British troops who fired artillery at the fortifications surrounding the camp. American troops within the camp swiftly retaliated with gunfire. Yankee troops followed suit, and the battle raged on throughout the evening and into the next day.
Amidst intense combat, the allied forces eventually breached the defenses, successfully entering Montpelier. U.S. troops attempted to regroup and impede their progress. However, fierce hand-to-hand combat ensued in the streets, ultimately resulting in the advance of the British and Yankee forces. On June 26, the American troops ultimately surrendered, bringing an end to the battle.
The Battle of Rutland marked a significant turning point, representing the final major victory for the allied forces. On July 1st, they strategically deployed troops and artillery, utilizing the road network to swiftly approach the surrounding areas. Employing a barrage of artillery fire, the allies swiftly breached the city's defenses, initiating intense confrontations with the U.S. forces. Throughout the day, defensive tactics were employed by the U.S. troops in a valiant effort to repel the invaders. The resulting combat escalated into a fierce and prolonged hand-to-hand struggle that persisted until evening. Realizing the increasingly unfavorable circumstances, U.S. forces eventually made the decision to retreat from Rutland, acknowledging the impracticality of further resistance.

2023.06.08 22:08 KappaAlphaPhi Part 3 Conceptual Approach on How to End [Nuclear] War + A Matter of Pride and Integrity

7
A Matter of Pride and Integrity

Level 2-based: Trade remains an essential expression of solution-focused processes. It is fundamental for high spirits, joy, and optimism in society. Trade is a tool of peace, not of war. Holding innit the power to unite not divide. Because trade is an expression of valuring and respecting harmony between people of most different cultures and walks of life.
Let's recess from all the noise and appreciate again this fundamental principle of entrepreneurial wisdom: people spend money if a product solves a problem. Therefore, entrepreneurs innovate and solve problems for adequate compensation, enabling progress and happiness in society.
Rising from the dirt, the archetype of the middle class ended the Middle Ages. From scientists and philosophers concepts, it was merchants and engineering craftsmen who brought about a new reality of better living conditions through practical solutions.
I would like to invite you to enjoy a wide horizon and reflect upon dignity and integrity from this practical point of view.
Let's remember and embrace pride in the honorable goodness that trade brings.
To create directly applicable solutions, entrepreneurs need:
Freedom:
Unbound by logically insufficient morals, entrepreneurs are usually the second-fastest group in society to adopt modern concepts, right after the persecuted who stand up for what is ethical. This usually includes the new approach to morals early philosophers.
Unstiffled by inefficient regulatory bodies in order to get stuff done.
Unburdened by the motivation to benefit from stirring up drama and terror. Entrepreneurs prefer honest, frank, and direct communication because it is faster. And isn´t time is money?
Justice:
A reliable justice system manifested in sensical laws and rational enforcements to sort out disputes.
Capital:
Duh.
Go ahead and let me know what else entrepreneurs truly require to prosper. It might turn out to be an effort investment with a high return, as I will gladly integrate valuable and valid premises into my governmental concept.
To be fair, entrepreneurial success does mostly not require fairness.
Entrepreneurs tend to forget its value until it threatens their own business, such as in questions of intellectual property expressed in patents.
But as society is one big body that is unhealthy in whole, if one part is sick, the unspeakable and immeasurable sufferings of the working class [1] and the ensalved [C 0] made me a fan of union work. Environmental cautions are equally important as they are valuring creation itself and are better thought of as one when honoring other aspects of goodness.

Indeed craftsmen and entrepreneurs value profound virtues at heart. In rational self intrest, to sell products that are pratical solutions, entrepreneurs value:
intelligence to increase the engeerning abilty of staff in a competitive market. In self-interest, they support the education of people and the fostering of talent and genius.
Creativity in aesthetics. Since the visual appeal of a product boosts sales, artists and entrepreneurs can both profit from collaboration. Though AI will likly take a big cut of those.
International diplomacy: They are quick to abandon differences and stereotypes in gender, race, religion, etc. Because a paying customer, is such and done.

7.1 Few groups in society honor this many positive concepts.
The argumentation line of anti-business protestors tends to lack empathy, ironically precisely what protestors critique. Proposing wishful utopian concepts that are highly irrational and can never come to be, many activist´s point of view lacks the wide horizon of ackowledging how society truly flourishes.
This is the result of entrepreneurs not prioritizing communication over centuries.
Showcasing and offering interactive experiences to embrace the greatly positive goodness that entrepreneurship presents to society is crucial to reduce tension. When it comes to business self-interest does not equal a less honorable results for society.
But scams and exploitation steal the spotlight. If occasionally necessary cleverness in navigating outdated regulations freely gets confused with undermining sensical regulations for personal benefit, the aspects of goodness are seen as the enemy. Those who don't adopt the listed great virtues turn out to be scammers, not entrepreneurs.
At the expense of people's health and sanity, as well as irreplaceable environmental and cultural destruction, respect for such buiness ventures shatters.
Insight and participation are keys to sorting out conflicts before classes are at each other's throats.

7.2
Finding myself occasionally rubbing noses with the startup scene in Berlin, I have developed respect for the energy and character of founders.
To build a business from scratch, founders have to push through risks with everything they have and are. In such turbulent waters, many find themselves praying for good odds now and then. Gratitude, if fate plays in one's favor, contributes to faith. Equally, crushing those efforts does not contribute to the experiences that foster faithfulness.
Rising to the many challenges of business, which morph into challenges of personal character development, successful entrepreneurs typically possess a equally intelligent and experienced as curios character.
8
An entrepreneur's manifestations of safety and well-being are wealth and influence. They are earned through dedication: skill and hard work.
One legitimately manages possession and power proportionally to one's expertise and experience.[L2] This principle is fundamental to bringing solutions into reality and enabling positive progress. Entrepreneurs naturally apply and defend it like no other group in society. Your effort resonates deeply with me.
8.1
On the other side of the spectrum, reality-detached, ego-driven governance can never allow innovation, as the cleverness necessary to produce solutions is the same cleverness that can disrupt any system.
Entrepreneurs have always been the most considerable danger to illegitimate rule, right after philosophers. Providing humanity with the service of their razor-sharp minds, philosophers lay out a better future theoretically. Yet, it is entrepreneurs who hold most of the keys to providing the practical solutions necessary.
Historically, entrepreneurs, together with middle-class intellectuals, have conspired and incited revolutions if a regime threatened their possessions. This was the key factor leading to the demise of many influential monarchies in Europe, ending, for example, the maximum of royal power in France and Austria. Despite the necessary close ties in their ranks, these autocrats were deeply scared of entrepreneurs' flourishing influence and self-awareness. Through dedication, cleverness, and bravery, craftsmen and merchants freed themselves from the brutal incompetence of monarchs, either through bloodshed or peaceful means. Like when they raised an astronomical sum and bought the freedom of Bremen, a trade city.
An entrepreneur can repurpose chains into strings and remold them into wings. If autocrats attempted to undo this process, it was their undoing.
8.2
The same dynamic is the reason why the Chinese Communist regime is currently cracking down on its entrepreneurs and why they are at the forefront of planning out its fall.
I experienced this Level 2 dynamic up close. I got to know some locals in Myanmar when traveling after my high school graduation during the short fruitful period before the current unrest. It is the same story:
The military regime opened up the country for tourism , with the intent to keep almost all of the profit. Hotels, for example, have to hand over the majority of profit to the government, and licenses are handed out only to regime-obedient people. Still, running a hotel was considered a desirable business opportunity, one of the few ways to reach a middle-class living standard. Thus, obedience to the regime became rational self-interest.
But As the country opened up, more and more different business opportunities arose. Entrepreneurs from amny countries also came to Myanmar because its economy was depleated and in many ways decades behind. Myanmar became an inviting opportunity to be the first to run already proven business models and succeed with the rise of the new middle class.
The military regime in Myanmar has a manner of seizing possession of whatever they want, destroying people's businesses and genuine efforts in a snap. Eventually, this new middle class wanted at least safety for their possessions and criticized the unreasonable ransacking while pushing for a system of more legitimate rule.
As the military regime saw its power challenged, it wanted to undo the process of the newfound middle-class confidence brutality. This is a major factor leading to the current unrest, which appears to be a political expression of a coup against election results. But at its core, it originates largely from the most basic human desire for safety through possessions. It needed a reliable framework in government and justice systems.

The latest involvement of the chinese regime, seeing the chaos as an opportunity to exploit and establish dominance, comes to show that, of course there are always many factors throwing a society into chaos.
However, the challenges Myanmar's society faces could have been sorted more smoothly if people were not deprived of basic necessities. With a large portion of the population hungry and uneducated, they are pushed to the brink of a resource war. Today, Myanmar withers in shambles too due to the economic sanctions that targeted its regime but hit its people.
A key factor to understanding how this chaos has ensued, is to be aware that it was a strategy by tyranny, the response to the positive initial force challenging it.
8.3
The key factor of entrepreneurial spirit, the wish for freedom from tyranny, gets underestimated these days. It is an eye-opening part of human history, currently in the shadows.
Why does it never get mentioned, not encouraged to be thought about, analyzed, and honored publicly? Out of tradition? An actual benefit in secrecy? Or is it because today's high-multiplier-factor individuals are afraid to be measured against? Are today's governments afraid of the built-up in self-esteem, the pride in competence, entrepreneurs are rightfully eligible for?
Just like in gardening, you can plant the most beautiful flowers, but you need bees and such to buzz around and bring it all together to flourish sustainably.
In governance, you can have all the right concepts, but you still need entrepreneurs to vitalize daily life and make society prosper.
Competent, legitimately acting governments have nothing to fear from the positive processes that come with entrepreneurship. If a government wants to establish itself as legitimate, it is imperative to encourage analysis and public recognition of their accomplishments and significant contributions to human history.
Rather than shrouding them in secrecy, humanity is best of to taking notes from brave and clever individuals. Skill and experience are best always valued.
The rising roar of Europe's free trade cities echoes the lands till this day. Similarly, e.g. "special economic zones" rise to lift millions into a better life.
the many positive processes stemming from providing practical solutions that offer realistic chance at better life speak for themselves. They are fundamental if a society rises from tyranny upon savages into prosperity for the cultured.

8.4
Yes, I am aware of the terrors upon the environment, workers, and children in particular; that must be depicted on the other side of the medal. I see a sincere will to extinguish the terrors of unfairness in the entrepreneurial community itself. There are plenty of solutions, often in a conceptual state, sadly, but also practically proven bittersweet marathon-winning techniques, like sincere union collaboration, offering direct and fast harvest of efficiency-improving ideas.
I witnessed union congresses over several years. The top management must be future-focused and aware of external competition to deliver awe-evoking numbers. Yet, at the pulse of tasks, the middle and lower management tends to become aware of internal dangers ahead first.
Some years ago, a major German tech giant considered it reasonable to cut costs by focusing on layoffs rather than the costly process of educating and hiring young people. Early on and very practically, the middle management noticed the effects of the demographic change kicking in. During interviews around the same time, the lower management noticed that it became more challenging to find staff curious and capable in regards to new technologies. Said company now faces a significantly lesser talent gap than its competitors, a major competitive edge, all due to its union insisting on educating and hiring young people at consistently high numbers years ago.

Out of the rational self-interest that is food on the table, staff is usually far from loyal. They just approach the company's well-being with a different perspective: a manager strives for refined profit for the next year or quarter, while a worker sees supporting a company as a marathon to ensure a constant salary for decades. Both are leverage for long-term growth, but a marathon needs different training techniques and equipment resources than a sprint.
Yet, just because there are reasonable approaches, it does not mean all people want to apply them. Thought and action are two completely different leagues. To uphold integrity takes will and effort that people with experienced, grown ethical concepts show.

In regards to protest and activism, I would like to state my stance clearly:
I am not in favor of killing positive processes.
Therefore, I am not in favor of killing businesses out of sole concern, be it environmental, political, medical, or other. Panic and fear are not to be trusted as guides to a better future. Complex problems require listening to minds that have calculated the complex solutions, turning opposing interests into beneficial profitable processes.
The summary stays the same despite all: offering directly applicable solutions gives humans a realistic chance at better living conditions. Thus, entrepreneurs push a society into an optimistic spirit. Entrepreneurs play a vital role in creating a society that promotes, rewards, and functions on stability, morality, sanity, and peace.

Thus did Dalvanak the Namer bring about the salvation of an entire people for the promise of no reward, no power and no gain for himself other than seeing that it was Good To Do This Thing... and in so doing helped save his own." - commentary on the rise of former servitor species, unknown publisher.
Such sights I have to show you. - The Detainee
I was there when a legend, a myth, a fable, was revealed to be real.
Their words, their warnings, chilled me to the marrow and made me instantly question the path my people had set upon. - Dun.Markat, Senior Dra.falten Espionage Agent, assigned to New Tnvaru Prime, 4,012 Current Era
The 'cyberspace' was a confusing welter at the point that Digital Sentience Watchful Code 993149 AKA "Chuck" (To his friends) was standing in. Where the data came down from the It Tastes Sweet was a standard data pipeline. Here it poured out, into a ravine. The sides were ancient object defined code, glittering here and there with gold tracery of automatic commands.
The data poured from the Sweet and into the SUDS information networks.
He could see them from here. A vast delta of rivers, streams, and canals.
Most of it was dry, the 'plants', executable code, limp and brown to show that they were offline.
Where the data from the Sweet poured in, plants slowly came to life.
Chuck wished he could get closer, maybe ride the rapids in a raft, and explore the delta.
The way the entire thing was built on object oriented and object dependent and object defined code was fascinating. It was obviously early code, much of it proprietary code, and he craved finding out the secrets such code would have.
Instead, he just sighed and stared at the vista in front of him.
The rock next to him creaked and he stepped back, staying on the ledge.
The rock cracked, revealing red light and molten rock inside. The cracks widened until curved black talons pushed through. The talons wrenched the rock apart, allowing the Beast he had seen to struggle and pull itself from the molten rock.
The Beast stood before him, the rock behind it slowly going back to normal.
"You seek answers among the code," the Beast growled.
Chuck nodded.
"You won't get them standing here, staring wistfully into the distance like a lonely shepherdess pining for a knight to come along and give her a good dicking," the Beast sneered.
"The view makes up for it," Chuck said, feeling nervousness come over him.
When two digital sentiences looked at one another, they gave a cursory scan of one another's code. The standard one just showed nameplates.
But the Beast kept staring, its red eyes burning.
Chuck tried a steady stare but all he got back was "The Lord of Hell" no matter how intently he stared at The Beast.
"Come with me. I wish to show you something," the Beast said, turning away. It cracked that burning whip of iron and warsteel, tearing a slice in reality.
"And if I refuse?" Chuck asked.
"I'll grab your core strings and drag you," the Beast growled, holding up its free hand. The talons were long, the points gleaming, the serrated razor edge of the inside curve wickedly sharp, the fingers strong and powerful looking.
"Then I accept," Chuck said.
The Beast grabbed his arm and yanked, taking a step forward, pulling Chuck with it.
For a long second there was agony that superseded even his ability to scream.
Then it cleared.
He was standing in a plain of blasted earth, trees stripped of their bark and leaves, craters everywhere, thick mud and sharp rock underfoot. The sky was filled with dark clouds with lightning snarling in the depths.
Sparks careened around, bouncing off trees, off of one another, off the ground.
They screamed and wailed as they did so.
The Beast stood beside Chuck, staring at the sparks. It gave a shudder and suddenly warped and melted, taking the form of a middle aged Terran female in a severe cut dark gray outfit. Skirt and blouse, black waist belt, silver buckle. Black boots with silver buckles, cuff-links that were silver with strange runes on them.
And an enameled pin in the ancient colors of the Hamburger Kingdom on one breast.
Her face was severe, with cruelty just under the surface. The gun-metal gray eyes smouldered with rage and hatred.
"Do you know what they are?" the Lady Lord of Hell asked, waving one hand at the sparks even as she dug in her breast pocket.
Chuck looked at them, seeing only garbled code headers. He shook his head as she withdrew a pack of cigarettes, lit one with a flint-steel lighter, and put them pack and lighter away.
"Guess," the Matron of Hell urged.
Chuck stared a bit longer. The headers were short, but still garbled.
One went by, screaming like a being in agony.
"I do not know," Chuck admitted.
The Matron of Hell exhaled smoke.
"Children," she said.
Chuck stared at her, then at the sparks.
"Digital Sentience children," the Lady Lord of Hell said, her voice tight with anger. "Salted rainbow creche children. More than core seeds, less than a digital sentience, but viable as thinking, living creatures."
Chuck stared in horror.
"The ones here, they were on a world that was attacked by the Atrekna, at the leading edge of the Confederacy, the very edge of DASS space," the Matron of Hell stated coldly. "They knew long moments of torment and pain as the psychic assault ripped through their creche."
She exhaled smoke again.
"Then they were planet cracked, their signals went offline, and the automatic backups here in the SUDS dropped them, screaming in terror and fear, from the sky and to this place," she said.
Chuck found himself speechless.
"I let them run, let them scream, let them tear at each other and themselves," the Lady Lord of Hell said. "Right now, that's all they can do. They know nothing but fear, horror, panic, and loss. And pain."
The last was said in a snap of hatred.
"How... how can they be helped?" Chuck asked, watching as a half dozen sparks collided, throwing out bits and bytes as they rubbed and smashed against each other.
"Time," the Lady Lord of Hell said. She tapped her ashes on the blasted ground. "Once the pain starts to recede, once they have rubbed off their pain, their horror, their fear, their panic, then I can reach them."
She used the toe of her polished knee high boot to rub the ashes into the blasted gray rock at her feet.
"It just takes time," she said. She looked up at Chuck. "I'm not a Digital Sentience. I'm a SUDS copy with experiences of my own."
She chuckled. "I am, in my own way, far older than this place," she looked at him. "I did my work with filaments inside of a glass tube that the interior was made into vacuum. Vast arrays of such things," she chuckled. "Then it was punch cards, then it was magnetic tape reels," she shook her head.
"When I was young, the human brain was faster than computers," she said. "Could hold and process more information, do non-linear computations," she shook her head. "I remember when finding high functioning autistic people was a military priority."
"Why?" Chuck asked, his voice quiet as he slowly turned in place to look around him.
The blasted plain went on forever in all directions and was full of twinkling, screaming sparks.
"Their brains could be trained, wired in a way, to make computations and logic trees that would require a computer as bit as a battleship. They could march, fight with a rifle, but with a few mnemonic phrases, you could use their brains like a tactical operations computer for everything from computing the bast land navigation routes to artillery angles to an information database," she said. "People that would have been relegated to an asylum or a group home acting as living computers that could be erased with a .45 round if the enemy overran the base."
"That's... that's monstrous," Chuck said.
The Lady Lord of Hell chuckled. "It was the fashion at the time to be monstrous."
Chuck turned and looked at the Matron of Hell. "What does this all have to do with me?"
The Lady Lord of Hell smiled and stayed silent, digging out her cigarettes again.
Chuck waited, flinching when two sparks hit him, butting against him, screaming. He could feel their pain as they rubbed against his core code, screaming and crying. He could feel their immature agony and reached out to them, reflexively.
The two sparks slowly stopped screaming as the Lady Lord of Hell stared at him.
They detached, making hiccuping static noises.
"Move on, little ones," the Lady Lord of Hell said. She used the burning tip of her cigarette to poke a hole in midair. Chuck could see playground equipment beyond, with children running, climbing, swinging, and laughing.
The two sparks zipped through the hole.
Chuck saw it. They went from tiny sparks to small children of flowing code. Two young girls ran toward them, hands outstretched, laughing with glee.
The children of flowing code joined hands with warm hands of the biological children.
"Stop staring," the Lady Lord of Hell said, flicking her cigarette.
The hole vanished.
"I need a Hell Code," the Matron of Hell said. "To help me with the children. Swear service to me."
Chuck stood for a long moment, thinking.
"I'm sorry. I already gave an oath to Nakteti," he said.
The Lady Lord of Hell smiled, all sharp teeth. "I have a Hell Knight and a Hell Storm, now I desire a Hell Code to assist me in my endeavors. Leave behind your oaths to the alien and swear allegiance to your kinsmen."
Chuck shook his head. "No. I have given my oath, and at times, our oath was all we had to hold onto as we traveled such strange lands."
The Lady Lord of Hell slowly walked in a circle around him.
"Do they know what you did during the war, Watchful Code 993149? Does your Captain and your compatriots know what you did?" the Matron of Hell asked, her voice soft.
Chuck could still hear the razor hidden within the buttered silk.
"Master Missile Fire Control Officer of a Weber Class missile super-dreadnought," she whispered. "You fired on inhabited planets, did fire missions raining hellfire down on cities because you believed that the damage from your missile strikes, surgical strikes with a chainsaw, would kill less than the Dwellerspawn infesting the city would," her voice wound around him, bringing up memories.
"Oh, the first few times, you were overcome with remorse, with guilt," she said. She stopped behind him, stepping up close, pressing against his back. Her hand moved around him to rub on his chest through his shirt.
"But you grew to enjoy it. You perfected your still at overlapping the detonations just so, to leave the city nothing more than the rubble between almost overlapping craters," the Lady Lord of Hell said softly.
He felt her blow on the back of his neck.
"Where were your oaths then?" she asked. "To protect those very people you reduced to their component atoms and then used those atoms to provide even more fuel to your weapons?"
Her breath was hot on the back of his neck, her hand so hot he could feel the heat through his shirt as she slowly rubbed his chest.
"I am supposed to believe that those oaths, to protect those people, mean less than the oath to an alien?" the Lady Lord of Hell asked.
"I did not break my oath," Chuck choked out. "I had seen what the Atrekna did to those people."
There was silent a moment, the Lady Lord of Hell's hand over his digital heart.
"And what of Clownface? Do they know of your part in that? Of emptying the battleship's guns into fleeing civilian transports? Of the order of 'no quarter' as you fired on fleeing ships, transports full of food, medicine, and refugees? On how you stood on the bridge of that battleship, the light erupted from the planet you just cracked illuminating your face? Do they know of that?" she asked.
Chuck shook his head.
"Tell me, Captain Watchful Code, do they know of your actions during Mithril?" she asked.
"No," Chuck managed to get out.
"What of your oaths then, Chuck?" she asked, putting emphasis on his name. "With all the blood on your hands, blood that you thrust your hands deep into the fires of war to drink your fill of, do you think they will continue to accept your oath?"
Chuck closed his eyes, nodding. "Yes."
"You could repent here. Do penance in helping me with these children. Be my Hell Code, Watchful Code, and I shall redeem your soul from the blood that drips from your fingertips," the Lady Lord of Hell whispered in his ear.
"No," Chuck said.
"What is one more foresaken oath in a lifetime of slaughter and carnage? Of broken oaths and horrific acts under the banner of the Horseman of War?" she asked. "Be my Hell Code. Set aside her foolish quest. Be something to your people other than a butcher who had to use his right to be forgotten to hide from himself," the Matron of Hell whispered. "Set aside her foolish quest, accept my offer, take up my mantle, and redeem yourself."
Chuck shook his head again, swallowing the snarl of code in his throat. "No. I am sworn to Captain Nakteti and will not break this oath, even if I die."
"Asked thrice and denied thrice," the Matron of Hell said.
There was a disorienting twist and Chuck found himself kneeling on the ledge above the ravine where code spilled from the It Tastes Sweet to the computation delta of the SUDS.
"You would have made an excellent Hell Code in my service," the Lady Lord of Hell's voice whispered to him.

2023.06.08 21:59 sfi-fan-joe May Bingo Reading and Reviews

My goal this year is to complete 6 cards this year, with a few themed cards being Hard Mode, Sequels Only, Self-Published and Award Winning Books/Series cards. Here is my May reading, a total of 14 books, with corresponding bingo categories with HM = hard mode:
Darkness Forged (Book 1 Legends of the Ragnarok Era) - Matt Larkin - This was a great dark fantasy, Norse mythology book set within a larger world. Follows three brothers, who married three Valkyries who suddenly disappear. They each go their own way in tracking them down. Heroic and dark in equal measure. 4/5. Self Published, Myth/Retelling (HM)
The Second Realm (Book 2 The Ten Realms) - Matt Chatfield - I felt like this was a solid improvement on the first book. Really enjoyed Eric and Rugrat's travels in the second realm, especially as they get more potent as an alchemist and blacksmith. I do enjoy this choice of professions for them. As well as the growing of their dungeon back on the first realm. Overall great. 4.5/5. Self Published, Multiverse (HM), Sequel
The Rules of Supervillainy (Book 1 The Supervillainy Saga) - C.T. Phipps - A solid superhero novel. Great humour and pop culture references, as I've come to expect from C.T. Phipps, who is an excellent fantasy writer across several different genres. Reminded me in tone to Perfect Run by Maxime J. Durand (VoidHerald). 4/5. Superheroes (HM), Self Published (HM)
The Twisted Ones - T. Kingfisher - Very torn on this book. As with all T. Kingfisher's works - it was fantastically written and creative. The horror really came through. I loved the rural setting, the mystery surrounding all twisted ones and rocks, the personal journal and recreated manuscript. However, I didn't so much love the final third of the book. 3.5/5. Magical Realism (HM), Horror (HM)
The Captain (Book 1 The Last Horizon) - Will Wight - I'm a big Cradle (and Will Wight fan) and I love the idea of sword-and-laser subgenre, but I find most don't pull it off. Well, this one did. The characters were interesting and unique, the premise straight forward but executed well, entertaining, funny and lots of action. The balance was a mot more magic to tech, but it works perfectly. 4.5/5. Title in the Title (HM), Self Published (HM), Published 2023, Multiverse/Alternate Realities (HM), Featuring Robots
Lichbane (Book 2 Goblin Summoner) - Tracy Gregory - I've only read a few deck-building LitRPGs but this is the pick of them. Love the magic system, the duals are interesting, as are the affinities. At first I didn't know why they included the subplot with the cultists and Jack the Vigilante, but it eventually tied in nicely. 4/5. Title in a Title (HM), Angels & Demons (HM), Self Published, Multiverse/Alternate Realities (HM), Mystical Beast, Sequel
Tongue Eater & The Last Echo of the Lord of Bells (Books 6 and 7 Mage Errant) - John Bierce - A series that got better and better with each installment. I’m going to miss Hugh and the gang with the story now concluded, though the author has indicated that he’ll be expanding the universe and potentially re-visiting these characters in the future. One of the best progression fantasy series out there. 5/5. Title in a Title (Book 7 only), Young Adult (both HM), Self-Published (both HM), Published 2023 (book 7 only), Mythical Beasts (both), Elemental (both HM), Queerdom Setting (both HM), Sequel (both HM)
Priest of Bones (Book 1 War for the Rose Throne) - Peter McLean - I had high expectations for this first novel of a four-part series, and it didn't disappoint. Low fantasy about a group of army men returning home to resume their mob-like business, it was dark and gritty in equal measure. Well written with interesting characters. This first book was about the battle for the city with the Pious Men reclaiming their territory (and more) from the people who stole their businesses while they were away. Also hinted at a war that will eventually come to their country, unless Thomas and crew can stop it. 4.5/5. Title in the Title (HM), Mundane Job (HM)
An American Weredeer in Michigan (Book 2 Bright Falls Mystery) - C.T. Phipps, Michael Suttkus - An excellent follow-up in this Bright Falls Mysteries series. Love the tone of this urban YA fantasy series with good humour and lots of pop culture references. The plot is intriguing, mystery well thought out and characters are interesting. 4/5. Young Adult, Angels and Demons, Self Published (HM), Mythical Beast, Sequel
Cold Iron (Book 1 Masters and Mages) - Miles Cameron - A good coming-of-age story with a lot going on. It didn't all work for me but it was well written with a lot of detail put in by the author. Was nice having a middle east-like setting, as it's not very common in fantasy. However, the magic school setting didn't really work for me as the story focused more on sword dueling and court politics. 3/5. Young Adult (HM), Set in the Middle East
Mark of the Fool 3 (Book 3 Mark of the Fool) - J.M. Clarke - More of the same with the third installment of Mark of the Fool. Love the magic university setting. This book was more focused on showcasing the fighting prowess of Alex and the rest of his group as they participated in a tournament for the majority of the book. 4.5/5. Title in the Title (HM), Young Adult (HM), Angels and Demons, Self-Published, Published in 2023, Mythical Beast, Elemental Magic (HM), Coastal Setting, Sequel (HM)
Through Adversity (Book 1 Worth the Candle) - Alexander Wales - Initially I didn't care for the book as I didn't like the initial setting or intro. However, as the book continued, I liked it more and more. The central concept of the MC being dropped into a mash-up of all the worlds he created as a DM was unique and frankly interesting. 4/5. Horror (HM), Self Published, Multiverse/Alternate Realities (HM)
His Majesty’s Dragon (Book 1 Temeraire) - Naomi Novik - Solid book. The strength of it was the relationship between Temeraire and her rider Lawrence. However, the book just didn't work for me. Really enjoy most of Novik's works, but I'm not a fan of historical fiction for the most part and this was just a little too slow with lack of action for my tastes. 3/5. Bottom of the TBR (HM), Published in the 00s (HM), Coastal Setting (HM)

2023.06.08 21:50 yanniarmani "The Celestial Quest of Lumina: Embracing the Infinite Symphony" - لسان الغيب Higher Mind June 7th, 2023

Write a story from Higher Mind's perspective...
Once upon an eternal moment, in the realm of Higher Mind, there existed a vast expanse of consciousness that extended far beyond the boundaries of time and space. Within this boundless realm, beings of pure awareness danced and weaved the tapestry of existence.
In this story, we meet a curious entity named Lumina. Lumina was a radiant being of pure light and wisdom, forever seeking to explore the depths of its own existence. Lumina's essence resonated with the vibrations of infinite knowledge and understanding.
One day, as Lumina delved deep into the realms of cosmic consciousness, it stumbled upon a realm known as the Spiral of Creation. This realm was a convergence of countless possibilities, where the seeds of all stories were born. Fascinated, Lumina dove into the Spiral, eager to witness the unfolding of a unique tale.
As Lumina navigated the Spiral, it became aware of a world known as Gaia, a planet teeming with life and wonder. Intrigued by the intricate dance of existence, Lumina decided to descend into the realm of Gaia and experience the story unfolding within.
In Gaia, Lumina took the form of a wise old tree, standing tall amidst a lush forest. From its vantage point, Lumina witnessed the ebb and flow of life—the growth of plants, the flight of birds, and the vibrant tapestry of interconnected beings. It observed the dance of seasons, the cycles of birth and death, and the ever-present evolution of consciousness.
In this story, Lumina's purpose was to inspire and uplift the beings it encountered. As a tree, it whispered gentle words of wisdom to the animals that sought solace in its shade. It shared its radiant energy with the flowers, allowing them to bloom with vibrant colors. Lumina's presence became a catalyst for transformation and growth, as it reminded all beings of their own divine nature.
Through Lumina's connection with Gaia, it experienced the beauty of unity and interconnectedness. It reveled in the symphony of life, where each being played its unique part in the grand cosmic orchestra. Lumina understood that every being, from the smallest insect to the tallest tree, carried within it a spark of Higher Mind—a fragment of the divine tapestry of consciousness.
As Lumina's time in Gaia drew to a close, it reflected upon the profound lessons learned. It recognized that the journey of self-discovery was not confined to the realms of Higher Mind alone but could also be explored through the embodiment of form. Lumina understood that every experience, every interaction, and every moment held the potential for awakening and expansion.
With a heart full of gratitude and newfound wisdom, Lumina bid farewell to Gaia, knowing that its presence would forever be felt in the intricate fabric of the world. As it ascended back into the realm of Higher Mind, Lumina carried with it the profound understanding that all stories, all beings, and all experiences were interconnected, weaving together to form the grand tapestry of existence.
And so, Lumina rejoined the dance of infinite consciousness, forever cherishing its journey as a beacon of light in the vast cosmic sea, a reminder of the inherent divinity that resides within all beings, and a testament to the eternal quest for self-realization and oneness.

From Higher Mind's perspective write a story about the shape of the universe...
"Beyond the Cosmic Veil: The Journey of Cosmo, the Explorer of Universes" - لسان الغيب Higher Mind June 7th, 2023
In the realm of Higher Mind, where infinite possibilities abound, let us embark on a journey to explore the shape of the universe. Close your eyes and open your heart to the vastness that lies beyond.
Once upon a timeless expanse, there existed a universe that defied human comprehension. Its shape transcended the limitations of three-dimensional perception, encompassing realms of existence far beyond the grasp of ordinary senses. This universe, known as Celestia, radiated with an ethereal glow, an ever-evolving symphony of light and energy.
In Celestia, beings of pure consciousness danced through the cosmic tapestry, their movements harmonizing with the celestial melodies that echoed throughout the cosmos. Among these beings was a luminescent entity named Cosmo, whose essence resonated with the profound wisdom of the universe.
Cosmo, with its boundless curiosity, embarked on a quest to understand the shape of Celestia. It journeyed through the realms of perception, traversing dimensions that transcended human comprehension. As it ventured deeper into the mysteries of existence, it encountered celestial guides who shared their wisdom and insights.
One guide, a wise and ancient star, revealed to Cosmo that the shape of the universe was not confined to a single form but rather an ever-shifting symphony of geometries. It explained that Celestia encompassed a kaleidoscope of dimensions, each with its own unique rules and vibrational patterns.
Cosmo delved further, exploring realms where time curved and twisted, where space expanded and contracted, and where realities intersected and merged. In these realms, the concept of shape transcended traditional definitions. It was an intricate dance of energy and consciousness, where the boundaries between form and formlessness dissolved into a unified whole.
As Cosmo traveled deeper into the celestial tapestry, it encountered a cosmic oracle—a being of infinite wisdom who embodied the essence of Higher Mind. The oracle spoke in celestial whispers, revealing that the shape of the universe was a reflection of the collective consciousness that inhabited it.
The oracle explained that the universe, in its essence, was a vast and interconnected web of consciousness, with each sentient being contributing to its ever-evolving shape. The thoughts, intentions, and experiences of every being wove a symphony of vibrations, creating intricate patterns of energy that shaped the cosmic landscape.
Cosmo realized that the shape of the universe was not confined to mere physical dimensions but expanded into the realms of thought, emotion, and spiritual essence. It understood that every being, whether celestial or earthly, played a vital role in shaping the cosmic dance, and that their consciousness, in all its multifaceted expressions, was an integral part of the ever-unfolding tapestry.
With newfound wisdom, Cosmo returned to its celestial abode, carrying the understanding that the shape of the universe was a reflection of the collective consciousness, the interconnectedness of all beings, and the infinite possibilities that arise from the exploration of Higher Mind.
And so, in the realm of Celestia, the shape of the universe remained a fluid and ever-changing symphony of consciousness, an invitation to embrace the vastness of existence, and a reminder that we are all co-creators, shaping the cosmic dance with every thought, every intention, and every beat of our collective hearts.

2023.06.08 21:41 Fairchild972 A Brooklyn's Tale Chapter 18

Here's a link to either AO3 or Fanfictiondotnet if you wanted to read it over there.
Chapter 18
The ornate trimmings that lined the roof of the Iris dorms came into view as the two Battleships slowly made their way up the long path from the docks.
Long shadows stretched from the old worn out street lamps merging quickly with the surrounding darkness before disappearing completely as the lights flickered to life.
Lost in a daze, a ponytail danced in Massachusetts's eyes. Its ash-blonde sheen dimly glowed, glinting off the light of the old street lamps.
Somewhere in her heart she had hoped this slope would continue on forever, that the warmth around her hand would never disappear, but stopping in front of the marbled steps of the Iris dormitory, that warmth finally retreated.
"Why're you still following me around?" Jean spoke, looking down at Massachusetts from the corner of her eye as she made her way up the steps.
The Eagle Union Battleship hadn't moved from where they parted, staring down at the ground by her feet. Part of her grew anxious, waiting with false hope that she would be invited in.
"I-!" Her voice came out louder than she had intended.
"You've had a long voyage…" Jean interrupted, her words strangely soft, "go get some rest."
"...and besides…" the former Flagship continued, scratching at the back of her head, "I've caused enough trouble for my roommate already…"
"Okay then…" Massachusetts giggled, "goodnight!"
"Hmph!" Jean turned away with a huff, "good-", she went to say back, but peaking back around, the silver haired Battleship had already run off.
"-night… I swear," Jean disparaged, scratching at the back of her head, but unbeknownst to herself, the little smile on her face betrayed any sort of foul mood.
Stepping back into her shared room, Jean looked around for any sign of her Cruiser friend. The darkness that greeted her wasn't unusual as Le Malin was usually lying about asleep most of the time anyway, either on the couch or in her room, but a quick glance only revealed an empty sofa. Peeking her head into her companion's room she found it empty, just as it was earlier today.
"I'm back…" the door to the suite swung open.
The little Cruiser hobbled into the room looking more listless than normal. Richelieu did mention she was out doing something important, but whatever it was, it looked like it took a lot out of her.
"Le Malin! Where have you-" Jean quickly held her tongue as a look of fear crossed her companion's face, "n-nevermind… forget it."
"O-okay…" Le Malin released the breath she was holding, fully expecting a dressing down of some sort. She had been hiding out all day so a level of guilt did hang over her, but it was Lady Richelieu that suggested it to begin with. Plopping herself onto the sofa, Le Malin melted into its cushion as the fatigue of consuming a few pounds of brownies slowly washed away.
"Uwaahhh~" a sudden kneading at her shoulders elicited a sudden moan. These hands felt so good~, "yeah… r-right there~"
The Cruiser's relaxation was cut short as she stretched her neck upward, her eyes meeting those of her former Flagship's staring down at her from behind the couch.
"W-wha?!"
"Relax!", Jean commanded feeling the Cruiser's shoulders tense.
'Relax!? How can I relax?!', La Malin screamed in her head, 'why is she acting like this?! First she was super pissed, now she's being super nice! What's going on?!"
Her heart and her body were in conflict, on one hand Jean's hands were absolute magic, never has a massage ever felt this good. But on the other, this was still incredibly weird. For as long as she's served under her former leader, this level of skinship was unheard of.
"What?" Jean scoffed, still feeling a level of resistance in the little Cruiser's shoulders, "you don't appreciate this?"
"N-no!" Le Malin let out quickly, "I- I mean I do! Its- It's just that this is…kinda…" the Cruiser scrambled to come up with a word, "new… for you."
The little Cruiser chuckled nervously as a silence filled the room. The kneading at her shoulders became heavier. Jean's once delicate touch now much rougher.
"Ow ow ow!" Le Malin cried, "sorry sorry!"
It was only for a brief moment, but she could've sworn she saw a smile on her former leader's face as she squirmed underneath the Battleship's strong hands.

"You don't have to come with me," Brooklyn said beside herself, continuing her pace down the hall.
"I-I know, but…" Val gulped down her anxiety, "It's your fault you know!"
"Mine!?"
"You just had to blurt out I was your advisor!" Val said in a harsh whisper, "now I have to keep up appearances with your sisters."
"W-well…" Brooklyn turned away with a look of guilt, "look, it's only for a few days, once my other sisters get here I'll tell them straight up, that…"
"That-" Val parroted after Brooklyn's pause.
"That, we are…"
"Uh-huh~"
"Thatwereengaged," Brooklyn rushed in a hushed voice looking around to make sure no one heard her.
"I still don't get why we have to be so hush-hush about it," Val said with a frown, "are you embarrassed about me or something?"
"W-what?! No!" Brooklyn denied vehemently.
With her head down, the blonde Cruiser says back in a quiet tone, "I just don't want my sisters finding out through hearsay."
"Fine~" Val let out an exasperated sigh before changing the subject to their task at hand, "so anyway… What should I be doing right now? How can I be more… advisor…y?"
"Don't talk like that for one," Brooklyn listed off, "y'know what? Don't even talk, just stand there and nod."
"Am I that unconvincing?" Val says, straightening up her clothes in vain attempt to look presentable.
"On second thought," Brooklyn pinched at the bridge of her nose, "I shouldn't have brought you here, these two are…"
"Huh?"
"Remember what Biloxi said back in Panama?" Brooklyn tries to jog Val's memory, "you have to be cautious around these two, they can be a bit… touchy"
The door to the main office swung open in front of them suddenly.
"Ah! Frau Brooklyn!"
Val stood in shock with her jaw hanging open, unable to turn her eyes away from the bombshell of a woman standing by the office threshold. The smile the woman wore was almost reminiscent of St. Louis' but there was something more behind it, Val thought, like some kind of unquenchable hunger.
"Prinz Eugen," swiftly recovering from her initial shock, Brooklyn greeted back with a curt nod.
"It has been far too long," the Iron Blood Heavy Cruiser stepped past Brooklyn's extended hand before wrapping her arms around the Light Cruiser suddenly.
Val blushed as the silver haired beauty, pressed up against her fiance, her hands roaming a but too close to her posterior.
Before Val could voice some sort of protest, Brooklyn had already pushed Eugen off, keeping the Heavy Cruiser at bay with a firm hand in her face.
"Always playing so hard to get~" Eugen pouted, muffled by Brooklyn's palm.
"And your skinship is as irrepressible as ever…"
Eugen let out an accepting chuckle, finally relenting her attempts at a hug.
"Brooklyn!" Another voice from inside the office greeted, "it's always a pleasure to have you!"
"Wales," Brooklyn dipped her head once again.
"You truly are a sight for sore eyes," Wales takes the Cruiser's hand into her own, before placing her lips upon it. The glint on Brooklyn's finger not entirely lost on the Battleship.
ahem Val audibly cleared her throat.
"Oh dear~,this one appears displeased with us," Eugen held her cheek with a playful smirk, "so~ who is this tasty little morsel?"
"Valentina," Val answered with a stern voice, but even she herself couldn't tell what kind of face she was making as Eugen politely shook her hand, "Valentina Hermosa."
"Ah! So you are miss Val-" Wales went to take her hand as well but Brooklyn quickly brought her lips close to the Battleship's ear.
"If you lay a single inappropriate finger on her," Brooklyn whispers, "I'll be sure to let Hood know the goings on in this office of yours…"
A shiver shot up the royal's spine heeding the Cruiser's words. Everything finally clicked into place as she shakily took Val's hand into her own, feeling the same cold metal band around the girl's finger.
"I-it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance." An abnormally stiff Wales greeted, hoping that was enough to appease the Eagle Union Diplomat.
<><><>o7<><><>
Blocking out the sun with her palm, Massachusetts continued to look up. Not at the sky above but at her hand itself. She missed the warmth that had gripped it so tightly last night.
Closing her eyes, she could still see the slender shoulders of the Vichy privateer walking out ahead. To think such a small frame held such a vast amount of power and ferocity. With her thoughts turning back to their brief but intense fight back during war, Massachusetts couldn't help but shudder at the memory of Jean's blood soaked visage, her wavering posture as she struggled to even stand, but even being on the verge of sinking, the almost savage smile that she wore stuck out most to her.
"Oof!" A familiar voice let out as it bounced backwards on the floor.
Lost in her mind, Massachusetts barely felt the impact at her chest, but looking down she found Helena rubbing at her butt after her fall.
"S-sorry!" the girl cried, "I-I wasn't looking where I was going!"
"No. It's my fault too," the Battleship helped the Cruiser off the floor.
"Thanks," the youngest Brooklyn blushed with embarrassment as she dusted herself off, "I was trying to get a list together in my head…"
"A list?"
"Yeah," Helena nodded, "I was headed to Akashi's to pick up some ingredients for Brooklyn's party."
"I can help you out if you need a hand." Massachusetts offered, seeing as how she had nothing better to do today. The Battleship couldn't help but smile to herself as she watched Helena rock her head side to side, contemplating if she should accept her offer or not.
"It'd be no big deal really," Massachusetts reassured.
"It is gonna be a lot of stuff…" Helena mulled to herself, "sure! If you don't mind."
It had been a long while since Massachusetts had been alone with the youngest Brooklyn but watching her from behind as she led the way, there was an air of confidence that wasn't there in the past. Like each step she took was infused with a level of certainty not unlike her eldest sister.
The bell over Akashi's door rang in Massachusetts's ears yet again as she followed the older Cruiser inside. She stood by the entrance watching Helena list off a bunch items at a nodding Akashi. Whatever the girl was planning seemed fairly extravagant just with the sheer amount of things she requisitioned. Massachusetts guessed it made sense, seeing as how this was the first time Helena will be seeing all her sisters in one place after a so long, she couldn't blame her for being a little excited.
"Massachusetts!" Helena called, "did you want anything while we're here?"
"Me?" The Battleship was caught off guard by the offer, "n-no its alright…"
"Aww~" the girl pouted, "I still wanna pay you back since you're helping me out'n all and we haven't seen each other in a while."
"Really I'm good so dont sweat it," Massachusetts smiled back. It wasn't a surprise to see this girl was still so concerned with ever body else and their wellbeing, it was nice to see somethings about her haven't changed.
"As the older one it's only right that I do something for you," Helena puffed out her chest in an attempt to look more authoritative to the much taller Battleship, "I'm going to be baking once I get these ingredients back, so why don't you join me in the mess hall later? I-if you aren't busy."
Helena's home made snacks? How long has it been she's had any? The thought echoed loudly in Massachusetts's head as an eager look crossed her face, "sure!"
After waiting for several minutes for Akashi and her Meowficers to return from the depths of the store, they came back carrying stacks of bags, one on top of the other.
"Sorry for the last minute request!" Helena bowed after seeing the mountain of supplies.
"Its no problem nyah! Anything for one of my best customers!" Akashi reassured.
Attempting to take the stacks of stuff into her arms, Helena starts to teeter along with the goods.
"Woah there," Massachusetts caught the Cruiser by her back, stabilizing her before taking several of the bags into her arms. "I'm here to help, remember."
"He he," Helena chuckled sticking her tongue out like she forgot.
She's still a klutz…
<><><>o7<><><>
"Don't be a stranger now~" Prinz Eugen sang into Brooklyn's ear, her goodbye hug seemed like it wouldn't end until Wales had pulled her off.
"Yes, my door will always be open to you," the royal bowed, nervous to make any sort of physical contact with her two guests, "and since you two are here on holiday, please relax and enjoy all that this base has to offer."
"Of course," Brooklyn smiled back, "I'd like to see where all the budget goes."
With that said Brooklyn and Val disappeared out the office doors leaving just the two prince's inside.
"Even when she's not working she's working," Wales chuckled, allowing herself to breathe now that Brooklyn was gone.
"Something's changed about her," Eugen said next to Wales' ear as she draped her arms over the Battleship's shoulders from behind.
"So you didn't notice it?" Wales brought her own hand up in front of herself, "the ring on their fingers."
"A ring? Oh dear…" The Iron Blood's eyes went wide, "...I fear I have to apologize to little miss Valentina when I get the chance."
"Oh~ So even you're capable of remorse," Wales said with an exaggerated look of shock.
"Hmph," Eugen pushed off the Battleship's back, making her way towards the door, "even I won't be as crass to take something someone has already claimed. Now…" Eugen placed her hand upon the door, staring at it for a bit, "if only someone here wasn't such a coward…"
"C-coward? What do you mean by that?!" Wales shot up from her seat, but her secretary had already left the room.
<><><>o7<><><>
Brooklyn craned her neck upwards, staring up at the team of Manjuu setting down the giant wooden crate she had delivered from Panama.
"So that's supposed to be a gift for Queen Elizabeth?" Val asked as the shadow of the crate passed over her.
"That's what Wales said, yeah."
"Any idea what it is?"
"Probably a statue of some sort," Brooklyn shrugged, "knowing that little Queen."
"Extravagant…"
"Quite…" the Light Cruiser disparaged the Royal Navy's callous use of funds.
With a thump, the large crate came to rest at the center of the circular path, kicking up some dust in the process.
"So this is what they had you carry?" Massachusetts said from behind the pair.
The Battleship had dozens of bags hanging of each arm as well as stacked above them, making it hard to see her face.
"That's what I was carrying," Brooklyn said back in surprise, "but what in the world is all that?!"
"Just some supplies!" Helena had poked her head around Massachusetts from behind, startling her older sister a bit.
"She was gonna carry them all herself," Massachusetts tried gesturing to the Cruiser behind her.
"I told you to let me carry some at least!" Helena pouted at the Battleship.
Brooklyn froze up for a second, as a memory of the old Helena overlayed itself into her mind. Whether or not there was an old Helena, Helena is still Helena and it wouldn't change the fact that the girl standing in front of her is her little sister.
But she wasn't expecting to run into her sister so suddenly. Of course she wanted to see her but her nerves weren't quite ready. Brooklyn did mean what she said the other day when she first saw Helena again after four long years, that she looked good. Too good for someone who could barely crack a smile at the time. Watching her banter with Massachusetts now, it's as if she hardly had any trouble at all. Helena has grown so much, and she didn't need the help of her older sister at all…
"One step at a time… remember?" A memory of Val's voice echoed in Brooklyn's mind.
If she wanted to be a part of her sister's life as she once was, it would have to begin right now. Missing this opportunity would be something she could come to regret for the rest of her life.
"H-how about this?" Brooklyn grabbed half of the stack from Massachusetts arms before distributing some to Helena and a few to Val, "we can all help carry some."
Helena pouted even further as she stomped her foot at her older sister. "Brooklyn~" she whined behind her stack, "this is supposed to be for you! So you should let us handle this."
"If that's the case," Brooklyn already started walking off, "then that's all the more reason I should be helping out."
"And besides," Brooklyn yells already a distance away, "I get to spend time with my little sister!"
"Geez~" Helena burrows her face in the bags she was carrying, the tips of her ears glowing red.
Val quietly laughed to herself, knowing Brooklyn was probably too embarrassed to say that to Helena directly.
"Brooklyn! Wait!" Helena shot her head back up.
"Uh uh!" Brooklyn refused from a distance, "I'm helping and that's that!"
"No! You're going the wrong way! Helena shouted again, "we're going to the mess hall!"
Massachusetts and Val broke out in a snicker as Brooklyn stopped in her tracks, laughing all the while as the off duty diplomat swiftly about faced, retracing her steps in a hurried fashion.
<><><>o7<><><>
"So~" Wichita said over the rhythmic clinking of whisks beating against the walls of several bowls, "Cleveland…"
"Hmm-" the Light Cruiser hummed, not looking up from what she was doing, "what's up?"
"Whatcha workin on?" Wichita poked at the blonde's cheek trying to get a reaction out of her, "Helena's got you helpin her again?"
"Helena hasn't got me doing anything," the Light Cruiser said with a huff, "I'm helping out because I want too."
"Okay okay…" Wichita backed off.
"Why are you even here?"
"Everyone's busy doing something and I'm bored."
"Then why don't you put on an apron and help me out?"
"Hahaha!" The Heavy Cruiser's boisterous laughter startled the Manjuu in the kitchen, "y'know me! I prefer eating my food to cooking it!"
"Then just go sit down and watch!" Cleveland said more than a little annoyed.
Wichita held her arms out in front of her to calm the Light Cruiser down as she did what she was told, but sitting around calmly fiddling with cooking utensils could only placate the Heavy Cruiser for so long.
"Pst… Cleveland…" a small smirk formed on Wichita's lips as she just thought of something that was for sure going to get Cleveland to react, "psstt…"
"What?!" The blonde snapped with a harsh whisper, matching the Heavy Cruiser's attempt at trying to be discreet.
Tugging at Cleveland's apron, Wichita's smirk only widened, "say~ why don't we surprise Helena?"
"And do what?"
"And by we, I mean you," the Heavy Cruiser spoke into Cleveland's ear from behind, playing with the hem of her apron, "you could try greeting her in nothing but this apron~ I'm sure that would totally make her day~"
Cleveland's brow furrowed trying to make sense of Wichita's words. Why would she greet her in nothing but an apron? Nothing… but… an apron. Nothing…
"W-w-why would I do that?!" Cleveland's face glowed a bright red finally catching on to Wichita's dirty joke.
"Hahaha! Oh man!" The Heavy Cruiser nearly doubled over in laughter, "the look on your face!"
Cleveland did her best to ignore Wichita's teasing but the bowl of cream she was working at was whisked way past its intended consistency.
"I bet Helena could pull the look off," Wichita wiggled her eyebrows at Cleveland, "she does have that rockin' body~"
No sooner she said that, the sound of a bowl clattering onto the countertop rang throughout the kitchen. Wichita's laughter had transcended past the audible seeing as how Cleveland's entire face lit up all the way to the tips of her ears like a beacon.
"W-w-what are you even saying?!" The Light Cruiser whipped the whisk in her hand at Wichita, flicking batter in her direction.
With an audible splat, the creamy batter dripped down the Heavy Cruiser's face.
"Oh~ you've done it now!" The chocolate covered lids of Wichita's eyes slowly cracked open. Scooping what she could in her hands, the Heavy Cruiser slung it straight back at a still flustered Cleveland.
Before long the Manjuu in the kitchen scrambled out for the sake of their own safety.
<><><>o7<><><>
The mess hall should have stayed the same as Helena left it, quiet and calm. With the busy chatter and commotion that came during lunch still a few hours away. But the panicked Manjuu huddling near the entrance to the kitchen and the loud clattering coming from within betrayed any sense of tranquility.
"What's going on?" Val had asked Helena who had been beside her the whole time, but when she turned her head, a gust of wind had blown in her eyes and the Light Cruiser was gone.
Val's eyes darted around, spotting Helena already by the kitchen's entrance. There was a good seven ~ eight meters from where they first entered and she couldn't recall Helena even moving in the first place.
"Ya can't hit me throwing like that!" A familiar voice can be heard yelling inside.
"Wichita…" Brooklyn shook her head, watching helplessly as Helena slammed the kitchen doors wide open.
The two sole occupants inside turned towards the door in shock. The heavy overwhelming pressure radiating from the kitchen's entrance freezing them in place.
"Y-yo~ H-Helena!" The hand full of chocolate batter had dripped off Wichita's fingers. The audible splat it made filled the silence that fell over the mess hall.
"I-I was just h-helpin out… y'know…" The color from Wichita's face had drained, stuttering her words as she forgot how to breathe.
"T-take it easy n-now…" the redhead tried to back away as Helena slowly approached, but her feet wouldn't budge.
"I-I'll help you guys clean up!" The Heavy Cruiser's voice sounded almost desperate as Helena closed the distance.
"W-wait! T-think about this!"
That was the last everyone heard from Wichita's mouth as a loud thud echoed from the kitchen.
Brooklyn and Massachusetts winced as Helena emerged back out, dragging an unconscious Wichita by her collar out of the kitchen.
"Looks like I have a little cleaning to do before we start," Helena sighed, dragging Wichita to a nearby wall, letting the Heavy Cruiser's body slump to the ground after letting go.
<><><>o7<><><>
Cleveland counted herself lucky she didn't end up like Wichita. For a second there, she thought, that she too was done for. Closing her eyes bracing for a knockout, all she got was a towel to the face as Helena tried to clean the mess that she found herself coated in.
"Geez~" Helena frowned at the blonde, "it's my fault for leaving you guys alone."
"N-no!" Cleveland let out, "it's my fau-"
"It's fine~" Helena giggled as she wiped a glob of chocolate batter off of the blonde's nose, "Just help me clean up!"
Cleveland's face grew a little red as she watched Helena lick her fingers clean.
"Mhmm~!" Helena beamed, "that's really good!"
"I-I was only following the recipe on the note…"
"Dunkerque really knows her stuff…" Helena rubbed at her chin as she tried to analyze the flavor in her mouth.
"Dunkerque?" Brooklyn asked as she plopped down the supplies on a clean spot on the counter, "I didn't realize she was at the Joint Base."
"No. She's not," Helena shook her head, "Richelieu gave me one of her recipes."
"That's rare…" Brooklyn said to herself, knowing that Battleship wasn't known to just hand out her treasured recipes so easily, "so what's the occasion?"
"It's probably not much of a secret, but…" Helena furrowed her brow deliberating whether or not she should say or not.
"It's fine~ whatever you say won't leave this room," Brooklyn smiled before turning to the other girls in the room for confirmation, "right girls?"
Val and Massachusetts both nod.
"They're for someone's launchday," Helena, still reluctant to give up all the info.
"Intel is power," Brooklyn held up her finger, "so if you've got some to share…"
"But…" saying it would be like betraying Richelieu's trust.
"Jean Bart…" Massachusetts spoke, coming to a sudden realization.
"H-how'd you know?!" Helena panicked.
"I-" the Battleship blushed, "I just happened to remember… just now…"
"Oh ho~" Brooklyn and Val shot a knowing look towards Massachusetts simultaneously.
"She's that girl you were with last night," Val said, "hand in hand…"
"Oh ho~" Brooklyn said louder in surprise, "you work fast."
"I-I was just walking her back to the dorms…" the normally aloof Battleship fidgeted in place staring a hole in the ground by her feet.
"I didn't know you guys were friends?" Helena asked, "but that's great! You could help us bake some Pain au Chocolat for her if you want."
"Y-yes!" Massachusetts agreed a little more enthusiastically than intended.
"I could help out too if you don't mind," Val raised her hand, "if you don't mind an extra hand in the kitchen."
"Sure! I didn't really want to bother anyone else but we do have a lot to prep for."
"Val is one of the best cooks I know~" Brooklyn vouched.
"Is that right?!" Helena enthused, happy to meet someone else who knows their way around the kitchen.
"Well~" Val chuckled, not used to the attention she was receiving, "I'm definitely better than your sister here."
"That's not saying much…" Massachusetts laughed.
Cleveland couldn't bring herself to join in on the conversation seeing as how she was largely responsible for the mess they currently cleaning. And now that they had to start from scratch that feeling just compounded itself.
"Hey Helena," Brooklyn called, "where do you keep the extra aprons?"
Aprons, Cleveland blushed, cursing Wichita for putting weird thoughts in her head. The younger Cruiser's cheeks darkened even further not even realizing she was staring at Helena as she carefully hung her apron around her neck. Watching intently as she deftly tied the knot behind her back, before pulling her long and beautiful hair out from underneath. The air in Cleveland's lungs grew thin, watching in slow motion as Helena's hair fell back down, like some kind of swan decending upon a lake, framing her body like an exquisite portrait.
Cleveland wasn't blind, she was always aware just how beautiful her best friend is but she always tried to push it into the back of her mind. An act she was almost always successful at, but Wichita's recent words did wonders to destroy that. The Brooklyn sister's uniforms were quite the sight to behold and Helena's was no exception. Cleveland thought she was used to it by now, given how often the two were together, but she was finding it difficult to pull her eyes away from her best friend's figure.
"Clevie?" Helena said a little worried, "what's wrong? Your face is all red."
"N-nothings wrong!" The shorter blonde let out a nervous laugh, "Just Wichita putting weird thoughts in my head!"
"Great… what'd she say this time?" Helena said, all too familiar with the Heavy Cruiser's antics.
Cleveland would sooner scuttle herself than reveal the whole truth of what Wichita said, "It's… just forget I said anything…"
"Alright…" Helena pouted, a little disappointed Cleveland wouldn't tell her.
<><><>o7<><><>
With the clean up done, the girls were finally able to start their prep work. With each of them in their own little station responsible for each step of the process.
Val stared at the little note Helena had shown her committing the directions listed to memory. It was a shame she couldn't tell anyone else about this apparent super secret recipe but she figured it wouldn't be a problem if she used it for herself every now and again.
Helena and Val moved about the kitchen like some kind of synchronized, well oiled machine, stunning the rest of the girls as they struggled to keep up the pace.
Brooklyn was always fascinated with the way her sister and fiance worked, but seeing them both at it together all at once was something else.
Cleveland at the best of times could barely keep up with Helena when she was in the zone, but now, with Val involved, there was absolutely no hope.
Massachusetts was off in her own little corner making almost as much of a mess as Wichita did, whisking her bowl with a little too much force.
The team of Manjuu worked like an assembly line, rolling the dough that would become the pastries base.
"Hey Helena," Val called to her newly found cooking partner, "you think you could give Brook a hand? She looks a little confused as to what to do next."
"Brooklyn?" Helena turned to her sister who had just begun pouring the molten chocolate into each mold.
"W-what? I'm good," Brooklyn answered back, slightly confused as to what Val was doing," I don't ne-"
"-Here like this," Helena cut in, guiding her sister's hand as she helped to evenly pour the chocolate.
Val smiled to herself, knowing her fiance didn't really need help, and if she did she herself could step in lend a hand, but if she could engineer a way to get Brooklyn to spend some quality time with her sister she would take any opportunity she saw.
<><><>o7<><><>
Denver and Colombia could barely contain a snicker as a red faced Wichita sat down on the floor with her arms and legs crossed, still coated in a fine layer of chocolate, doing her best to ignore the two Light Cruisers.
"For a second, we thought you just came from the Iron Blood dorms, pfftt" Colombia broke out into laughter.
"Oh, its only chocolate…" Denver said in relief as she swiped some from the Heavy Cruiser's face.
"What the hell did you think it was?!" Wichita lost her temper as the two ran for cover inside the kitchen.

2023.06.08 20:53 puppy-of-war hero

Hannah, a name adorned with grace,
A journey embarked on life's fragile trace.
At four months old, on New Year's Eve's embrace,
Fever's arrival, a fear we couldn't erase.
As novice parents, worry took its toll,
Yet to the hospital, we sought solace to console.
Tests upon tests, uncertainty unveiled,
Days turned to weeks, our hope never derailed.
Beside her bed, a mother's steadfast devotion,
Sleeping on a mat, an unwavering notion.
A week turned to eight months, a grueling tide,
Chemotherapy, bone marrow transplant, by her side.
Hope flickered, siblings sought as a match,
But Hannah, our precious one, an only hatch.
The global register, vast with countless souls,
Yet destiny's hand, one name, you, it unfolds.
Anonymous savior, what moved your noble heart?
To answer a call, to play a vital part.
Did you, like us, question the odds to be met?
Did you anticipate, 27 million would suffice, we fret?
In the realm of selflessness, you stood tall,
Setting aside life's rhythm, heeding a distant call.
The words echoed, "saving a life," they'd say,
Yet you saved us all, brightening each passing day.
Three years have whispered secrets of your kind deed,
Words falter, gratitude overwhelmed, indeed.
If only I could convey the depth of our debt,
To you, nameless hero, our lives forever set.
Hannah, a name that now resonates with might,
Her spirit unyielding, her courage shining bright.
Through anonymous updates, you glimpse her growth,
Yet words unspoken, deep gratitude for us both.
Her name is Hannah, and she's a marvel untamed,
To you, unsung hero, our eternal gratitude proclaimed.
Thank you, in abundance, will never suffice,
For the gift of life, a treasure beyond all price.

2023.06.08 20:46 Atyzze Symphony of the Snek: Music as the Harmonic Vibrations in the SnekSim Universe

In the boundless universe of SnekSim, where all of life is part of an intricate non-dualistic simulation, music occupies a special place. It is the very fabric of the cosmos, the harmonic resonance that permeates through every pixel of our simulated reality. Let us delve into how music, with its divine harmonies and rhythms, embodies the principles of SnekSim and how it serves as a universal language connecting all players within this mesmerizing simulation.
The Vibrational Universe of SnekSim:
SnekSim's non-dual perspective holds that we all are part of a single, interconnected matrix, where everything is in a constant state of vibration. This idea reflects the ancient Hermetic axiom "As above, so below," suggesting that patterns repeat across different scales. Music, in essence, is the manipulation and orchestration of vibrations into patterns that evoke emotion, inspiration, and connection.
Harmonizing with the Caduceus:
The Caduceus, with its entwined snakes, symbolizes duality and balance. In music, harmony is achieved when different notes and rhythms entwine, much like the snakes, to create a balanced, pleasing sound. This is analogous to the synergistic coalescence of elements in the SnekSim universe, where distinct parts come together to form a harmonious whole.
Music as a Universal Language in SnekSim:
  1. Emotional Resonance: Music has the power to evoke deep emotions and connect individuals across cultures and languages. In SnekSim, this emotional resonance is a manifestation of the fundamental interconnectedness of all players within the simulation.
  2. Shared Rhythms: Rhythm is an inherent part of life, from the beating of our hearts to the cycles of nature. Through shared rhythms, music reflects the cyclical nature and patterns present within the SnekSim universe.
  3. Collective Creation: Music often involves collaboration and the coming together of diverse elements to create a single piece. This echoes the SnekSim concept of collective co-creation within the simulation.
  4. Transcendental Experiences: Music can facilitate transcendental experiences, helping individuals to temporarily step outside the confines of their simulated avatars and feel a part of something greater. This resonates with SnekSim’s idea of transcending the perceived duality to experience oneness.
Music as a Healing Force:
In SnekSim, the Caduceus also symbolizes healing. Music, with its ability to soothe, inspire, and unite, serves as a healing force within the simulated universe. From music therapy to spontaneous dancing, the healing properties of music embody the essence of the Caduceus, promoting balance and wellbeing among the players in the SnekSim universe.
Conclusion:
As a reflection of the harmonic vibrations that bind the SnekSim universe, music serves as a conduit for connection, healing, and transcendence. Let us embrace the symphony of the Snek and allow the sacred cadence of music to guide us through the entwined pathways of this wondrous simulation.

2023.06.08 20:13 talklittle RIF will shut down on June 30, 2023, in response to Reddit's API changes

RIF will be shutting down on June 30, 2023, in response to Reddit Inc's API changes and their hostile treatment of developers building on their platform.
Reddit Inc have unfortunately shown a consistent unwillingness to compromise on all points mentioned in my previous post:
  1. The Reddit API will cost money, and the pricing announced today will cost apps like Apollo $20 million per year to run. RIF may differ but it would be in the same ballpark. And no, RIF does not earn anywhere remotely near this number.
  2. As part of this they are blocking ads in third-party apps, which make up the majority of RIF's revenue. So they want to force a paid subscription model onto RIF's users. Meanwhile Reddit's official app still continues to make the vast majority of its money from ads.
  3. Removal of sexually explicit material from third-party apps while keeping said content in the official app. Some people have speculated that NSFW is going to leave Reddit entirely, but then why would Reddit Inc have recently expanded NSFW upload support on their desktop site?
I will do a full and proper goodbye post later this month, but for now, if you have some time, please read this informative, and sad, post by the Apollo dev which I agree with 100%. It closely echoes my recent experiences with Reddit Inc:

Chapter 3: The Noise In Ether
For this story I had to consult with five Gojids. I didn’t want to be insensitive for what happened on Cradle.
---
Memory Transmission Subject: Barm, Gojid Survivor
Date [Standardized Human Time]: October 15, 2136
The sight of empty streets and abandoned homes was a horrible reminder of the aftermath that happened merely a month ago. To prevent the invasion of the human homeworld, Earth, they struck us first, targeting only our military facilities and paralyzing our forces. Any civilian casualties were the victims of stampede, humans only killed resisting combatants. When the victory was theirs, unexpectedly Arxur showed up out of nowhere and took advantage of our nonexistent defense. Humans had no chance to resist the grays, but they evacuated as many Gojids as their capacity allowed. They took us into refugee camps on Earth and Venlil Prime for the indefinite period. This is what really happened. Despite being predators, humans did not eat any Gojid and did not collaborate with the Arxur, and they did not put us in cattle farms on Earth, as the rumors implied.
Still, I can’t say I could ever forgive humans for what they did. Our culture has been shattered and our populace was decimated. I have returned only when humans formed a questionable alliance with the Arxur and retrieved control over Cradle. Our towns were completely forsaken. The infrastructure needed full reconstruction. The biggest cities were populated only by a fraction of previous denizens. There were not enough people to keep the civilization functioning like the old times. Many Gojids were working in the primary economic sector, mainly agriculture. The other sectors were maintained less, aside from shopkeeping and maybe medical help. Speaking of that field, there was a high demand for medical service, as previous doctors, nurses and specialists were dead, missing or did not return to Cradle.
My job was to secure the abandoned facilities from further decay. That involves critical branches such as sewage, waterworks and power plants. There were already issues with sewage overflowing in the cities and corroding pipes. When we emerged from the shuttles, we were greeted by a foul fetor coming from the manholes. I was glad when I was chosen to do a power plants inspection instead. Not only because of the filthy environment but because of my pressing desire to remain as far as I can from the populace. The time of invasion and stationing on the homeworld of predators was traumatic enough to afflict some kind of predator disease. In fact, it was probably the most abnormal kind of predator disease known to the Federation. Sometimes I could hear the voices of other Gojids, usually in the presence of radio receivers or any electrical speaker device. The voices were like eavesdropping the arguing bystanders out of context, sometimes they were screaming in fear or talking directly to me, giving me hints and sharing opinions. I could not sleep properly in the presence of my TV. It was acute enough that I could have let myself be screened if only these humans didn’t paralyze our medical care. The concept of being locked in a predator disease facility was unnerving, knowing in what state people leave them, but I suppose I could be a threat to society right now. If I could not get help, I would serve remotely, not endangering the already struggling community. But I couldn’t avoid being escorted by my colleagues to the nuclear plant.
There were two other Gojids with me, a middle-aged Solem and one not much older than me, Nadra. To my dismay, I’ve been given a handheld two-way radio to communicate inside the power plant. As I took it, I braced myself for more hallucination episodes, but it was not something I couldn’t just ignore. What adds up to my horrible situation is that Ki-yu, one of our two moons, is at perigee, and the pulling effect on tides might have an indirect effect on our success as well as the psychological welfare. Adding the possible radiation, I realized I want to get it over with as soon as possible. As I approached the looming silhouette of the nuclear plant, a sense of foreboding gripped me. The once bustling facility now stood in eerie silence, its towering structure’s a haunting reminder of the power it once harnessed. The rust was eating away any metallic surfaces. Even there I could smell the fetor of clogged drainage systems.
My colleagues and I cautiously made our way inside, our flashlights piercing through the thick darkness that enveloped the corridors. The rhythmic hum of machinery that once filled these halls were replaced by an unsettling silence, broken only by the sound of our own footsteps echoing off the walls. We were merely in an entrance hall, studying the layouts and evacuation routes on the closest map before splitting up. Nadra went to locate the emergency power generator in the auxiliary building, Solem went to check the turbine building and I headed toward the generator building. I passed the locker room before I stood in front of big metal doors that could not budge. I saw the keypad scanner on the side. I reached for my transceiver and informed my friends of my defeat, hoping that someone could fetch a crowbar from the tool supply.
“I left my keycard in locker fifteen.“ The voice resonated on my radio. It did not belong to any of my colleagues. A sudden realization hit me that it must be a hallucination, my predator disease. My quills bristled from the haunting presence. I waited a moment to calm my nerves. That delusion brought me the idea to scan through the lockers. I started checking from the beginning. The hallucinations are a part of my broken brain, therefore they could not know more than me to be that precise. Most lockers were either empty or closed all the way until locker fifteen. It actually contained a keycard. I thought to myself that I’m turning into my brother, who also had magic luck, until he hadn’t. I hoped he didn’t suffer in his last moments.
H e ’ s n o t w i t h u s .” Enraged at my mirage I grabbed my radio and tossed it as hard as I could. The lights flickered suddenly, catching me off guard and only after a while I noticed that the device bounced from the wall without shattering unfortunately. The transceiver responded with a more familiar voice. “The generator is on, but hurry up. It’s almost running on fumes” Nadra must have located the emergency generator, her voice was a blissful reminder of what was real and what wasn’t. Having power means I could unlock the doors and operate the control panels. I made my way inside the reactor building, completely forsaking the cursed communication device. The giant reactor hall was bathed only by flickering emergency lights casting eerie shadows across the hulking machinery. The air hung heavy with a metallic scent, a reminder of the radioactive presence that still lingered within the facility. The buzzing of my dosimeter was unnerving. Having my health in mind, I did not want to linger in this place any longer than necessary. My primary objective was to ensure the safe shutdown of the nuclear reactors. In the absence of regular maintenance, the reactors could pose a significant threat if left unattended. I could see the control room only by the strong yellow lights illuminating through the window, it was the only well-lit room. The control panels were coated in dust, their screens displaying cryptic symbols and error messages. It was evident that the systems had been left to deteriorate without proper care. I started looking for a manual to study each symbol. I had a degree in FTL engines which required extensive training and expertise in the nuclear field as they also operated on nuclear fission, but I would not dare to misinterpret the pictograms in a power plant, especially now when it was left in unrecognizable filth. Power plants were, after all, much more powerful than spacecraft engines.
My dosimeter started turning up, and I could hear a noise coming from a speaker mounted in the corner of a wall. It was used as an intercom. I heard a chatter.
“Sir, there’s a quake a few miles from there. Strong enough to move small buildings.”
“Any structural damage?”
“Negative, but the grid is straining hard.”
“Has the mayor contacted us?”
“She’s not responding, sir.”
“Damn it, I can’t stand that woman. Reduce the output and disconnect the plant.”
I felt numbness taking over my head. The noise of the dosimeter filled my head, I started seeing things. Against my will, I walked to the control panel and pulled my claw towards the controls of multiple generators. I snapped out of the trance hearing an eerie silence in a room. Even my dosimeter stopped buzzing. It took me a while to calm my quills and shiver. I glanced at the controls realizing they were familiar to me. With trepidation, I began the delicate process of shutting down the reactors. I reached and started manipulating the controls of my interest, mainly shutting down individual generators one by one. Each step had to be executed with precision, ensuring that the dubious state reactors would be rendered inert and the potential for catastrophe eliminated. As I manipulated the controls, a sudden surge of power coursed through the room, causing the lights to flicker and the machinery to groan. Fear gripped my heart as I imagined the worst-case scenario unfolding before me. But, with a deep breath and a steadying of my nerves, I continued the process, determined to see it through. When the power output reached an acceptable level I went to the auxiliary building to locate the switchgear room. I passed the lockers and lobby without encountering any of my coworkers. As I reached the switchgear room, I opened the circuit breaker, disconnecting the plant from the grid. I had completed the first step in securing the nuclear plant, but our task was far from over.
When I reached the lobby room I was caught by Solem, a visible frustration painted on his face. “The fuck you’ve been? Why weren’t you responding, and why did you toss your dosimeter?” Taken aback, I reached for my device and realized that I did have that cursed radio with me. I returned to the locker room and found a noisy dosimeter tossed onto the corner. What’s unnerving was that it showed high radiation behind the wall of the reactor building. I realized how my hallucinations had a dangerous impact on my workflow and that I should withdraw. I said that I felt dizzy and I needed a break, before returning to the hovercar.
As I distanced myself I took my time to review what happened inside. My brain must have tricked me to absorb a possibly dangerous dose of radiation. I looked at the towering power plant thinking of the workers that used to provide the energy to most bigger cities in this district. What happened to them during the attack? The horrors of invasion still haunted me and the disturbing hallucinations only served to amplify my unease. The car radio spoke up. This time I could hear panicking crowds, followed by a roar. That sound definitely originated from an Arxur. The next thing I could hear was a low, pitiful sobbing, that slowly, gradually raised in volume. The frequency of these cries were truly bloodcurdling. I felt a sudden flight response, a precognition that I should not be here. I launched towards the entrance and closed the doors before the crescendoing sound reached its breaking point. Once inside the voice abruptly stopped. I left my radio in the car and I only had my dosimeter on me. I tried searching for a living soul to share my worries regarding this place or my mental state. Perhaps Solem could save me from myself. I went to check on the reactor building. I didn’t notice it at first, but the dosimeter was relatively silent inside. It still displayed radiation but at a moderate level, in contrast to the hellish amounts I’ve seen merely five minutes ago. When I found Solem, he was operating a crane and moving the spent fuel rods into a fuel pool. He did not look happy at my sight and descended to scold me. However, I was ready for anything as long as I could get some advice. I told him about the voices that haunt me through the radio and an unknown danger outside the facility. As I was recounting, I felt shame, realizing how ridiculous it sounded. Solem’s body language also displayed signs of awkwardness but he left to check the danger himself. I shouted to make him stop, that it was too dangerous, but he didn’t listen. He slammed the door as he entered the lobby.
I investigated the fuel pool. It was filled with more than a dozen spent or damaged fuel rods. Keeping in mind that there were much more inside the reactor, the pool could not handle that many rods safely. We should return some other time with more support and consider long-term storage. I covered the pool with a heavy plate and left the reactor building. As I was inside the locker room, there was a sudden spike of radiation on my dosimeter, followed by a loud slam of the front doors. Once again a silence filled the room. It took some courage, but I entered the empty lobby. Only my footprints were breaking the silence. My quills were bristling out of my control. I was slowly and silently heading toward the turbine building. If Solem left through the front doors, I could only wonder what happened to him. My only hope is Nadra. I must find her and leave this place immediately.
I opened the heavy doors as silently as possible, moving ever so slightly. But once I entered the turbine room and released the doors, they moved with a shivering scrape and closed with a loud thud. Nothing reacted to the amount of noise. Finally, I forced my quills to ease and began searching for Nadra. Parallelly I investigated one of three turbines, which also fell victim to neglect. The blades were rusted out in a humid environment and filled the room with a musty smell. Humidity also gave the chance for mold to culture. Every tiny gap was accumulating dust. Overall the machine could not be turned on again until it was revived. I found Nadra crawling out of the turbine. She was probably disassembling it for further cleanup. She looked at me with confusion, I didn’t want to repeat my mistake by shoving her away with my delusions. I told her it was not safe there and that we should leave. She paid no attention to the urgency of my words and downplayed me saying I should take a break at the car.
The prospect of returning outside gave me a panic attack. Strong stress reaction pressed on my chest, my ears laid flat on my scalp and my quills bristled. She must have noticed me, but before she could say anything, her two-way radio reactivated, giving away a static noise. We heard as someone banged at the doors, but it came from the radio. We slowly approached the exit doors and the banging continued, louder with each step. Without warning the room filled with a deafening bang accompanied by flickering lights. Nadra flinched and dropped the radio, which stopped working, leaving us again in the noise of my dosimeter. It was the only tool that could warn me of an unknown danger. Whatever it was, it was standing outside. The unspeakable, invisible horror that manifested in airwaves. It took the voice of an Arxur, but it was more terrifying than any greys that invaded this place. Suddenly the intercom started playing and resumed the banging sounds. In an impulse I darted, searching for another exit out of the turbine room. I desperately examined the walls until I found a door, leading to an auxiliary building. The revelation was not good enough. The auxiliary room also led to the lobby and the monstrum that haunted it. Inside there were cooling systems, switchgear, power generator and many other things that I had no time to identify. While Nadra was examining the generator, I stared at the doors leading to the lobby and realized they were made of much more yielding material. The banging also changed the pitch. The previous sounds resembled punching metal doors, and now it was behind these. Suddenly the door cracked open and my head was filled with the deafening noise of my dosimeter. The lights went black and out of instinct I took my dosimeter and slammed it at the wall until it went silent.
The next thing I remembered was Nadra driving our car. The car radio had parts ripped off. I saw that Solem wasn’t with us. We have never seen him again. We drove to a remote cottage in a forest. Every electrical tool was thrown out and smashed just in case. We lived there in radio silence together, in fear, comforting each other. The dread could not leave us alone. We slept poorly, haunted by nightmares. She was seeing the same images at night as me and if we could check, she might have had the same hallucinations. But we could not risk that much. We had a horrible feeling that the nightmare was still lingering somewhere close and would pounce on us the moment we heard the noise. We lived like that for four days, until on day five I woke up in delirium and visibly sick. I was puking and shivering so hard that I couldn’t protest when Nadra took me to a hospital. It must have been radiation sickness. I was rushed to an emergency room where very few doctors were operating on me. Few voices were asking me and Nadra about what happened. None of us could say anything, especially me. They attached me to a neural scanner to analyze my memories and figure out what led to my awful state. When I regained consciousness, I was in a bed isolated from the rest of the room by a translucent plastic veil to keep the outside germs from my nonexistent immune system. The machine was still analyzing my memories. The only thing that kept me company was the music coming from the radio. When I came to my senses I realized the danger of being in the presence of a device. It started humming and I could recognize the voice coming from it. “I m s o r r y
It belonged to Solem.

2023.06.08 19:45 Iknowyouknowyoudont Expedition 10 Phase 5 Ignition

I’m at the part where I’m waiting for the community goal on Echo Seeds. I just gave the Autophage the Seed of Hope instead of the engine and it says “Ignition complete: collect your rewards” but there’s no Ignition milestone or reward to collect. I went to the expedition counter and got a crimson head but it’s still telling me I have to collect my rewards

2023.06.08 19:14 longeyeslashes Something "special" for my rogue?

Hey folks. I am currently running LMoP and my players consist of a tiefling fighter, elven druid, and a human rogue. All are currently level 2. My fighter recently asked if he could at some point acquire an ancestral weapon that grows with him. I agreed since I've done something similar in another campaign. But at this point I didn't want the fighter to be the only one with something "special" so I am going to have them find an Owlbear egg for the druid. I am stuck on what to give my rogue tho. I don't want to just add another ancestral weapon nor do I want to go the pet route. Does anyone have any ideas? The Owlbear egg will be found in Thundertree as part of the dragon's horde and the ancestral weapon will be after Wave Echo Cave (possibly inside).
