2023.06.04 02:45 SuaveSycamore Advice on recovering data from an old HDD

The hard drive in question: https://imgur.com/a/7hbYQul
Computer is a Dell Latitude D505. The hard drive is likely 15 or 20 years old at this point. When I booted the computer from Hiren's Boot CD on removable flash media (this was in 2021), the hard drive showed up in File Explorer but could not be mounted. It was listed as being 30gb in size in File Explorer, and that seems to correspond to what was printed on the drive label. The system prompted me to reformat as it could not mount the drive, I did not do so. I ran chkdsk at least one time, read-only, without the /f argument, until I realized I wasn't supposed to do that and stopped. The drive does not make any clicking sounds that I can hear, and I am no longer attempting to boot the drive.
My understanding is that 20 years is a long time even for an HDD and that there may be data loss simply due to the age of the drive, and that if recovery were to be attempted I would need to have it fixed by a professional because the drive cannot be mounted. I am in the southeastern US (don't believe I am located near any professional that frequents this forum) so would need to mail it.
I don't have much information about the contents of the drive. There are likely to be word documents associated with some community college classes that my parent took when they were using the computer, and I suspect there is a chance there could be family photos (and am curious in general to find out what is on it), but there's no urgency and if no data can be recovered, I am not really any worse off than I was before I took the computer out of storage. It's my understanding most places worth sending my drive to wouldn't charge me if data cannot be recovered anyway, and I don't mind paying the cost of shipping to find out if something is salvageable.
Should I bother trying to recover the data given that it's been 20 years? If so, what's the best place to send it given my location?

2023.06.04 01:38 reaver19 [FS][US-WA] R630 10Bay 4x U.2 NVME, 2x R330, 2x Brocade 6610 switches, 40G QSFP+ setup and lots of freebies with the switches and servers.

Trying to yet again thin out the homelab stack, kinda got it where I want it and these have been sitting idle or unused. I feel like the prices are right but if you want to buy a few things we can probably strike a deal. Going to do local only to start, local is south King County, WA

R630 - 350$ - 10Bay SFF - Last 4 SFF bays are NVME, has the dell pcie card for nvme enablement. Front of chassis u.2 are the best way to do them, they get so hot on pcie cards. The NVME kit is pretty expensive.
-2x 2680v4, No Ram, H730 Controller in IT Mode, iDrac Enterprise, iDrac sync bezel, 2x 750w PSU, RAILS

R330 - 180$ EA - 8 Bay SFF - These are exactly the same except one is a 1230v5 and the other is a 1280v5
-1230v5/1280v5, 1x 16gb ddr4 2133 ecc udimm, intel x520-da2, idrac module + enterprise, 2x 350w PSU, RAILS

Brocade 6610-24/48p Bundle 350$ - There is pretty good value here, its a complete kit you can run these forever with the spare parts. Both are updated and have all the ports licensed.
- Bundle includes 2 Switches, 1 6610-24 with 2psu 2fan, 1x 6610-48p PoE 2psu 2fan,
-2 Spare PSU, one for each switch
-4 Spare Front to Rear fans
-3x qsfp+ breakout cables
-2x qsfp+ to qsfp+ cables for stacking.

2x Mellanox ConnectX3 40/56gb dual port QSFP+ PCIE card - 25$ Each

2x Navepoint L Bracket server shelf- 20$ EA - 1 of the half depth and 1 of them full length on the L - https://www.amazon.com/NavePoint-Universal-Mount-4-Post-Compaq/dp/B00XXDJASY/ref=sr\_1\_3?keywords=navepoint+server+rail&qid=1685836187&sr=8-3

Freebies- I got some more stuff I can throw in if you need anything let me know. Trying to clean stuff out. 1u Rack Blanks, 1u rack shelves, patch panels, cat6 jacks, PDU, power cables, etc.
2x 350w r330 PSU
4x r330 fans
2x r630 10bay fans
5x Samsung 840 EVO 1tb SSDs, 40-50% Endurance remaining no failed sectors.
caddies to fully populate all of the bays, and I can supply blanks as well
8x <30% endurance 1TB Samsung 840 EVO, some may not function, free. I have a bunch of separate ones I use as drink coasters.

2023.06.04 00:41 FormulaFox FOR SALE: Complete Atari Legacy Tempest cabinet and Space Invaders project cab.

LOCATION: Northeastern Ohio
FOR SALE, LOCAL PICKUP ONLY: One complete and functional Tempest cab and one modded Space Invader project cab.
The Tempest is the cheapo version - unlit marquee and generic riser. But it is fully functional, was only lightly used. Acquired about one year ago. No mods whatsoever, in great shape.
The Space Invaders cab was a project cab widened to accept a monitor up to 19.75" wide. Presently has a 5:4 DVI monitor in out - not truly "mounted" due to not having VESA ports, but it is adhered in place and fully usable. The cabinet does not have a computer or controls - it has a control panel drilled for a 1P 4+2 button layout with two admin buttons, and a place for an analog flightstick or 4-way joystick as well as a button hole spinner plus two associated mouse buttons. Control panel has filled in holes that could be re-drilled for a 2P 6+2 button layout. Kickplate has been modded into a door to access storage shelving inside. Comes with a custom riser and a storage box that fits inside of riser. Marquee modded to pop out in a rather half-assed manner.
Prices negotiable. Asking $200 for Tempest, $50 for Space Invaders. PM with inquires.
PHOTOS AVAILABLE ON REQUEST.

I was using an old laptop as my video server it worked perfectly but the battery died and apparently you cannot power it with just a power cable it’s got to have that battery in it or it will not stay on so I had an old Dell winding around and I put libreelec on it and it seemed to work better but It loses my external drives if the power looks at it funny and I have to plug them into windows, repair them then eject them and some times I have to do it repeatedly before kodi will mount the drives. 2023.06.03 11:09 Ravnos92tw Nuovo Canale Twitch

Ciao a tutti! Lunedì, Mercoledì, Venerdì dalle 21:15 in poi.

2023.06.03 07:49 mstrmind5 New Ultrawide Build

It’s been a while since I last built a PC (about 6/7 years). It was a 6700k, 1060 6GB system that has served me well.
I am now currently in the process of buying parts I would need for an ultrawide (3440×1440 144Hz) system. I already have the following items either through good deals, spares or items that I can reuse:

Dell S3422DWG
MSI 4070ti Gaming X Trio
Samsung 990 Pro 2TB
Noctua U14S

I have a rough idea of what the rest of parts could be and was hoping you guys could answer some questions that could help me decide or solidify my choices. The parts I am considering are:

CPU: AMD 7700, 7700X, 7900, 7900X, 7800X3D
(would I see much difference at UW res? Are there many games that use more than 8 cores? Would a U14S be able to cool these CPUs sufficiently?)

MOBO: MSI B650 Tomahawk, Gigabyte B650 Aorus Elite, Asus B650E-E Gaming Wifi, MSI X670E Tomahawk
(prefer ATX, would I see much difference performance/quality wise between any of these? Are there still issues with ALC4080 and Intel Lan ports on some of the boards and best to avoid those? Is a q-code necessary? My old board, Asus Maximus Hero 7 had one and it has been helpful)

RAM: 2×16 GB DDR5, preferably 6000MHz CL30
(left this open as I would have to check the QVL list on the board I choose. Is the jump in price for 6000MHz CL30 worth the performance gains? Is it better to look for ram with Hynix A or M or Samsung dies?)

PSU: 1000W, possibly ATX 3.0, Corsair RM1000X, MSI A1000G
(I know I could get away with lower wattage, but would prefer the headroom should I choose to upgrade anything in the next few years. I trust Corsair more as it has more reviews and I own one of their PSUs, but the MSI is around the same price with the 12 pin cable included. Open to suggestions)

CASE: Fractal Torrent
(I already own a Fractal R5, so looking for something with more airflow. How is the build quality of the large torrent? Is there a lot of plastic and what’s its quality like? How are the included fans? How is thefinish on the white or gray options as those are the two I looking at, smooth or textured? Any other alternatives?)

Thanks for reading

2023.06.02 04:36 Villager-C HELP: Mounting 49 Inch Monitors Stacked

Hello Ultrawide Master Race. I bought a Samsung and Acer 49 inch ultrawide monitor. Neither fit this the "X" shaped monitor vesa mount. The outer "arms" of the X mount seem to be in the way for both. I am wondering if I can just angle grind the arms off and mount them?
I got this stand. I know its cheap, but I am thinking of reinforcing it, particularly in the base and the post connection. THX.

ALTERNATIVES:
1) Buy a Samsung Vesa bracket & Standoff Screws for Acer.
2) Buy standoff screws for Acer and mount it on a tall arm mount.

Please lmk your thoughts.

I'm a Lenovo fan, so I give them more attention.
The best 2nd hand option that I founded here in Portugal (because I saw other good, but more expansive at backmarket) was:
