2023.06.08 23:32 ElChappyShampoo Full IronMan 3 weeks out... not feeling ready, freaking out a bit! (12 hour + athlete)

Hi guys!
I am 22 yrs old and doing the Ironman 140.6 in Frankfurt in 3 1/2 weeks! I played college soccer but tore my ACL so I am very careful in terms of running injuries. My goal is sub 14 but I really just want to cross the finish line, Im freaking out a bit...
Background: I have been training now for 3 months for this specific race but before that I completed and trained for the 70.3 in December where I completed the race in 7 hours due to a bad knee injury on the 1st mile of the run.
For the last couple months my weeks consisted of 10 hour trainings weeks of the following:
- Running: 32km avg (kept low due to injury prone knees): 6-7 mile run + 10-16 mile run
- Bike: 5hrs / week avg (Longest bike was 4:40h indoor, 2.1 watts / kg avg, felt great!)
- Swimming: 4km on avg (3.9km longest swim in open water, in 1:30 felt great!)
- Nutrition: Been training nutrition for the last 6 weeks, able to get in 70-90 carbs an hours comfortably on the long rides / runs.
This weekend will be huge: 100 mile bike ride, 4km swim and 18 mile run.
Additionally: I just got my bike last week and have been practicing outdoor, feeling good so far, can easily sustain 30km / hour just need to work on my bike fit a bit.
Any feedback would be appreciated! I really just want to cross that finish line and perhaps do that under 14 hrs. (I purposely kept the load on the lower side because my knee is incredibly injury prone.)

2023.06.08 21:10 Glum-Algae-8984 Understanding China.

Hello.
Throw away account for obvious reasons. Ive written articles here before in the very early days on other throw aways but lurk once in a while. This is kind of a low effort post but i feel like i need to at least get the discussion started.
Anyway this is a critique of this sub. It is meant to be taken constructively and I am not bashing. Many of the people here are enthusiasts who understand the importance of geography on the fate of a nation, a people and an individual (hopefully). But in recent times the quality of discussion has been lacking. I suspect this is because people rely solely on mob thinking and their opinions to inform their decision with minimal logic. Many lack a clear understanding of history, technology, the current state of affairs in the country, and ideological frameworks and geopolitical theories. This is fine. These people aren't in charge of policy. But their opinions can sway the thinking of others on this sub and can cloud discussions.
Don't believe me? Read this article: https://scottlocklin.wordpress.com/2017/09/02/ai-and-the-human-informational-centipede/
The same applies to conversations here.
I see this most clearly in discussion of china both in media and this sub. Too many peoples "reality models" or their framework for viewing the world is out of touch with reality. This is to be expected. The reality model/ framework of a day labourer is very different than that of a celebrity. In the same way geopolitical enthusiasts on this sub simply dont understand the fundamentals of indias position with other countries. The media doesnt help either.

To act in a productive manner, an entity must first evaluate what its working with. You need data. This sub is heavily lacking good data on China for example. Here are sources I believe are valuable in starting to develop an information bank on china for the average Indian. This is not an exhaustive list. But it will inform your thinking. What you conclude from this information will be up to you. But the better you information, the better your decisions, and what is an entity if not the net sum of its decisions?
TL;DR : Learn to read from more than one line reddit comments and media pieces to inform your opinion if you actually want to be constructive and lead the country to a better place.

Sources on china to look at. THis is china specific because they are our priority but is usually applicable for other issues:
  1. Make an account with the large chinese social media sites. How many of you have actually tried jumping the fire wall? Do you know the chinese equivalent of reddit? Google? Youtube? Have you tried searching posts on india on these sites to see what comes up for chinese audiences? Well you should try atleast. Also if you are worried about your data, our goverment sold it out to the western companies a long time ago, so dont worry about it lol. whatever you are trying to protect is already gone. Also a lot of these apps are available on the playstore like wechat. Unless the indian government banned those too lul.
  2. Serpentza is a good youtube channel. He makes highly critical videos of china, but as far as i can tell has a good head on his shoulders and is pretty grounded in reality and doesnt get lost in the rhetoric from either side. He isnt in the "CHINA BAD!!! REEEE!!!" camp of hawks, and neither is he in the "WESTERN PROPAGANDA, CHINA IS HEAVEN!!!!!" china bhakt camp either. He lived in china for 13 years. He is south african and is highly critical of his own country. In many ways he has similarities to dis-illusioned indians but in his case it might be justified. He may not be nice to hear but he is consistent in his beliefs from the videos i have seen. Or i might be getting psy-oped by high level propaganda. Who knows, maybe you can tell me after watching a few videos. An example of his work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHxh_sQHH0E. My point is, look for videos that are as close to the ground reality of the other side as possible.
  3. Learn to look for the bad. It is always nice to hear good things about your country. But talk is cheap. Look for the reports of india actually messing up because those are the places that we need to fix. We have poor relations with virtually all of our neighbours. Why? India has abysmal health issues with a large population that is either hungry or malnourished. This has terrible implications for creating high quality indian citizens who not only love but are capable of pushing india forward. Why? If you do this well you will start to think independent of political party posturing and start seeing what actually matters and which parties will actually make a difference and rise above all the media mudslinging. Start by looking at nutrition and the indian diet and its effects on the growth of individuals, toilet and sanitation programs, energy infrastructure. These are the things that really matter. Sure you might get depressed, but if you aren't ready to hear the bad parts of your country then you are a coward, im afraid because then you will never be able to work to fix this. Also the west always pushes india good or bad narratives knowing that the vast percentage of the population are dumb enough to eat it up and give massive concessions to the enemy. Dont be like these people.
  4. Read a god dam history book. Seriously. History is the biggest bank of data you can have on the actions of states and how they survived. Which empires lasted long? Which fell. Why did they fall? Are their influences still around today? Are those influences good or bad? Human biology has been relatively constant for the last 300,000 years. This means the people who lived in the past were no different intellectually than us. Dont make the mistake of thinking we are different because we arent quite there (yet). How did they make sense of their state? If you cant read a history book, then listen to a few low level history podcasts. Dan carlin on youtube has great series on ancient empires.
  5. Read a god dam geopolitical science book. Francis Fukuyama is famous in US geopolitical circles of the highest level. He also has written books. Maybe its a good idea to read them? The autobiographies of great leaders are important sources into their inner workings too. Giga Chad Deng Xiaoping, Giga Chad Lee Kuan Yew, Giga Chad Otto Bismarck. These are a few people who changed in a single generation the fate of their nations (sometimes single handedly). For the akhand bharat types (the ones that arent stupid) i would recommend starting with Otto.
  6. Stay away from the media. Anything worth reading is hidden in congretional reports that no one in the media reads or obscure blog posts. If you read my link on the human info centipede you know what i am saying. If someone took the time to write a book on it you can trust that it is worth reading. Usually.
  7. Respect your adversary. It is important to not believe ones own propaganda. It is easy to get lost in it. You are no better. In fact i would suggest looking for propaganda from your side. It usually is a good skill to seperate the truth from the lies. Can you name some of this propaganda?
  8. Accept that we have no allies. India will always be on its own. Atleast for the near future. We are at the center of the "Old World" We will always be a battle ground. Any peace we make here, will be of our own work. No one wants a strong india. Not the US or China. China because we will be a competitor in their neighborhood security (doesnt matter if we wont be its what they think). US because they made the play book on this. Support france to beat the british and gain independence. Support the Russians to beat the Germans. Support the Chinese to beat the Russians. CAn you guess who is next in this pattern? We have friends of convenience. Until and unless we sign into a military alliance on paper, we have no allies. And even then who is to say that our military allies will actually help us? Just look at armenia, CSTO and Russia.
  9. Learn what india's geopolitical objectives are. If you wish to evaluate whether a developement is good or bad, you must have a metric of progress that you are aiming toward. It is not simply "counter china".
  10. Competence is the backbone of a society. Beware the rise of the incompetent. Learn from the mistkes and failures of other states. See what works, shed what doesnt. An example: https://www.thepsmiths.com/p/review-south-africas-brave-new-world
  11. Overtime you will become disillusioned. You will become frustrated. And if you do some of the things I have said you may grow to dislike a lot of things about india. I have simply given you the knowledge to fathom the monsters that hound this country. The courage and good character to face them and not run away will have to come from you.
I have purposely not given easy links to some of these suggestions because you lazy asses need to learn how to google and look for information yourself. Too many of you are spoon fed and dont know who is holding the spoon.
This is a good place to start. If you made it this far, good! Youve either been psy-oped by high level propaganda or are racing to the comments to give an opinion. If however you see something of value in what i am saying, good luck to you!

2023.06.08 20:54 freeteehookem Terminating my use of Reddit

TL;DR: Reddit has changed a lot in the past decade. Their decision to get rid of 3rd party apps is a catalyst for me to quit this site. I should have quit this site years ago, but I'll be committed this time. If you see me using this account after 6/30/23, call me out on it and I'll PayPal/Venmo/whatever you $100.
I've been using Reddit since 2012. Reddit has helped me in many ways:
Safe to say, Reddit has been influential in my growth as a person in the last decade. Reddit has introduced me to communities that I can't find anywhere else on the internet.
At the same time, I want to stop using Reddit. I've spent countless hours mindlessly scrolling this site, when I could have been doing so many other things with my life.
I've noticed in the past few years (I would say post-2016, and especially since COVID) that the quality of content on this site has drastically dropped. There's simply more people on this site. Reddit has an interest in expanding its userbase, which I can't necessarily blame. At the same time, the lowest common denominator of Reddit users has dropped, and the content needs to match to these users in order to reach the front page.
I've noticed just how much of the content on default subs is meant to anger me. I can tell just how much worse I feel when I browse through /all. Content is reposted across subs, typically by bot accounts. It's like a shitter version of TikTok. The culture of Reddit is completely unrecognizable from what it was a decade ago. Maybe I'm seeing this through rose-colored glasses, but there still have been changes.
I've always used 3rd party apps to access Reddit on my phone (as well as old.reddit.com on my desktop). I've used BaconReader, Sync for Reddit, Alien Blue, and Apollo. I never have and will never use the official Reddit app. I cannot support the direction that Reddit has gone in recent years, and I'll consider the death of Apollo as a goodbye.
So thanks Reddit, for all the good and bad you've given me over the years. It'll be hard to breakup with you, but I know it's what's best for me.

2023.06.08 03:35 domors89 Low-water recipe check

Hope you don't mind the @ u/stormbeforedawn - carrying on from the other thread I figured a new post might be easier.
Ingredients:

Process:
  1. Bag fruit (probably) and let sit in bucket until defrosted
  2. Add Novoclair, dissolved in 150ml, 40C water. Mix and roughly mash fruit with potato masher. Water to 18.3L
  3. When must is at room temperature, add honey and thoroughly mix/aerate/bash fruit around
  4. Pitch yeast, re-hydrated in GoFerm
  5. Punch cap 2-3x daily for first 7 days
  6. Aerate/vigorous stir 2x daily for first 5 days
  7. Nutrient additions at 24 & 48 hours - half each time
  8. 24 hours after pitch (after aeration/mixing) add bentonite and FT Rouge
  9. After 7 days, seal and leave unopened for 2-3 more weeks
  10. After those weeks, remove fruit bag (if using) and wring out bag in separate vessel. Rack liquid from primary to bulk aging (hopefully a 3 gallon carboy full, but likely have to use smaller vessels). Rack liquid from ringing out into single gallon carboy. Age two (free run and 'pressed') separately. If not using a bag, use hop spider to rack from primary. Then throw fruit in a bag and wring out. Age free run and 'wrought' liquid separately. Rack onto 50ppm K Meta.
  11. After 6-12 months of aging, consider blending of two for tannin balance (if no oxidisation issues with wrought liquid)/oaking/adding peppercorns/spices/backsweeten to taste.
Important Question - did I get the nutrition right? The numbers seem too high after watching your (Storm's) no-water nutrition video and Arrow to the Mead's no-water videos. Rhone 2226 has high nitrogen requirements. To use only DAP and Ferm AT, I had to double the limits for those on the calculator. Are the amounts I've got in the recipe too high? The default settings with Fermaid O zeroed out, had 19.4g DAP, 9.08g Fermaid AT & 14g remainder Fermaid O.

Training

This was my first marathon I had ever run. I decided to run this marathon after getting hooked into running last year after deciding to run a local 10k last April. I was in ok shape at the time due mostly to playing soccer, so I finished that 10k in 43:29, but decided I wanted more.
From this, I decided to make the step up to a half marathon which I decided to run in October of that year. At this point, I joined a local training program where I was able to run with a great community of people and have a weekly routine to follow. Note I had previously run a half marathon about ten years ago, but I did not train properly at all for it and completely fell apart. For this half marathon, I was able to run it in 1:23:17. From this half marathon, I learned that proper nutrition and pacing is essential, because I struggled to get through the last 5k. At point I craved even more... I wanted to do a full marathon.
I discovered the NODM marathon through some buddies that I ran with in my training program and decided this was the one I wanted to run. I had June 4 set in my mind as my goal and started training for it this year in January.
Wednesdays were my workout day. These varied in type and intensity. It varied from hills, to intervals, to tempos depending on the day. Saturdays were the long runs. These progressed in length and duration as the training programs went along. I worked my way up to a peak of 36k on these days, but I ended up having 6 runs of 30+km over this training block. During most of these runs I ended up doing some tempo work on tired legs. I wasn't originally planning on doing this many long runs, but the training program I was in lined up with a different marathon, which was run 1 month earlier. I ran on 3-4 other days as well doing fully aerobic runs, I tried to run at least 5 times a week in total.

Pre-race

I ran a test run at race pace 4 weeks before the marathon and felt like it was doable over the whole distance: https://www.strava.com/activities/9017090186. My final long run was the following weekend
The last 3 weeks were tapered. They consisted of dropping the overall volume by about 10-15% a week, but this was from reducing duration, but not number of runs.
In the week of my race, I ended up changing my diet to more carb heavy food. in the last 3 days before the race, my meals consisted of oatmeal in the morning, pasta for lunch and pasta or another high carb meal for dinner. Lots of fresh fruit was consumed as well. The night prior to the race, I had sushi consisting entirely of yam rolls, but this was a smaller meal that more of the previous ones. The morning of my race I had a meal consisting of oatmeal, bananas, and coffee.

Race

Weather on the morning of the race was ideal from a temperature perspective, but there was a 15km/hr WNW headwind that we had to run into. Because the race was point to point and running to the WNW, we had to run straight into a headwind for the almost the entire duration of the race.
The race started at 7:30 am local time. There were 280 total runners who ran the marathon. I started near the front, but not right at the front. There were no pace signs, and from last year I saw the winner finished in just over 3hrs. I went in with the idea that I wanted go out conservatively and work my way towards my eventual goal pace, so I didn't deem it too necessary to be right at the front.
The first 7 km were a gradual uphill on a paved trail in the forest with not a ton of notable features. A lot of runners went out really fast right away, but I avoided the temptation to speed up to the front and went mostly on feel. I planned to race mostly on heart rate instead of pace, because I find it a much better indicator of the amount of effort I am exerting when running. My intended HR for the race was going to be around 165, but for the first while I was averaging under 160, so I was running at a very comfortable pace. Over the first few km, I ended up passing people one at a time without changing my effort, until there were only 2 people ahead of me.
The next 12 km were a gradual up and down through some roads in and around the City of Sequim. It was in this area, that because there was a lack of trees and protection, the headwind could really be felt. I continued maintaining what I felt to be the same effort, and at around km 17 I ended up passing the person who was currently in 2nd place, so there was just a single person ahead of me at this point.
The next 10km were on paved trails through some farmland outside the city. I ended up catching up to the person leading the race at this point and passed them just before the halfway point. I was still taking gels every 6km, and water at every aid station, so I was making sure to stay to my plan. This to me was no-mans land because I did not expect to be in the lead at any point. I felt really good at this point, so I decided to start pushing it a little bit for the second half of the race. There was 1 big gully in this part, but nothing else of note.
The next 8km were the hardest part of the whole race, there were a ton of hills, gullies and sharp turns that needed to be navigated around. There were a couple spots where I had to slow down a bit to avoid slipping as well, since the hill were quite steep. Also it was during this portion of the race that I ended up having to weave around a whole bunch of half marathon runners. There was a half marathon going on at the same time that started at 8:30 at the halfway point of the marathon. I avoided running into anyone and managed to make it to the bottom of the hill for the final stretch of the race.
The final 5km of the race was along the waterfront, but because of this the wind was blowing straight at me without any barrier whatsoever. I felt really tired, but decided to try to keep up the same effort and finish strong. I didn't know where the other marathon runners were, so I didn't want to take any chances. I ran with whatever I had left in the tank and finished strong, but felt completely spent. I crossed the line in a time of 2:48:46 and I couldn't have been happier with the result.

Post-race

Immediately after the race, I was presented an award and had a local media rep take a few words from me, but honestly I was just really spent. When this was done, I found my family who had several bottles of water and gatorade waiting for me. I had these and a couple protein bars, bananas, yogurt, and a muffin. Even though I felt like I couldnt eat anything after finishing, I know I needed to refuel properly.
I'm planning on taking the rest of the year off from training for a marathon, but I may end up running a half later this year. Since I've qualified for Boston, I may train towards running that next year, but for now, I'm taking the week off to recover.

Been watching this sub for a few months and the gains are all insane. I assume some involve PED's, which, no judgement here, but what exactly are all of you doing exercise and nutrition-wise? Training & Background:
I (M, 32) was a decent runner in high school and ran a 4:36 one mile, 10:10 two mile, and a 16:05 three mile. I did not run competitively in college and only started running competitively again two years ago. I had run a few half marathons before this race, as well as one marathon (CIM). Before CIM, I ran a 1:24 half, and at that point I realized that I have a real chance to BQ. This was out of the question before as I had torn my achilles a couple years back and the road to recovery was tedious (to say the least). Anyhow, I jumped into CIM with about three months of training, and unfortunately ran into some ITB issues as well as getting sick two weeks before the race (not covid, just a cold). The timing ended up being ok as I was able to taper during this. I ran a 1:28 the first half of the race and then just fell apart the second half, finishing with a 3:10. So, I went back to the drawing board...
I took a few weeks off and then started training again. I looked at some training plans, but couldn't manage to be disciplined enough to follow any. A couple weeks after CIM, I scanned BQs and ultimately landed on San Diego's RnR as my family could make the drive over from my hometown. I did not look at the course profile until a few weeks later when it dawned on me how foolish I was for choosing a hilly race to follow CIM.
Over about 18 weeks, I averaged 25 miles, and peaked at 39, with two long (ish) runs. One at 19 and one at 16. I jumped into a half during this training block and ran a 1:22:06. I did feel my ITB here and there, but not enough to stop me from pushing it during my longer runs.
Pre-race
My family flew down to San Diego on Friday. I stayed a few blocks from the starting line which really helped during race day. I jogged over from the airbnb to the event and used that as my warm up. I was able to meet a friend and we stretched and talked about the race and our plans. Knowing the second half of the course was hilly, my plan was to go all out the first half and just try to hang on.
Race
As the gun went off, I felt every ounce of adrenaline and just took off. I got caught up with the half marathon going out and started way too fast (5:45 min/mi). I had to catch myself the third mile and dialed it down to about a 6:30 min/mi pace. I tried to keep this pace until the halfway point. It was really tricky to run with the half marathon group as I kept finding myself wanting to go at their pace, or feeling like I was going too slow. They finally broke away at mile 11 (I think) and then it proved to be a bit of a lonely race with a few of us somewhat close to each other. After mile 13, I was eager to floor it and was surprised at how good I felt, so I let myself go...this would prove to be quite the mistake. Mile 15-19 was really tough. I think at this point we were passing some swamp and getting onto a highway. I started dry heaving at this point, and tried to fuel to help me hang on. Mile 20-24 was just brutal. The Highway to Hill is such a mental and physical breaking point, I kept trying to get my mind to focus on the end result but instead found myself looking down at the road and then up again to what appeared to be a never ending climb. Fortunately mile 24-26 was downhill and I recovered my pace a bit. I had some fellow runners encourage me to hold on and that helped a ton. (thank you!).
Nutrition
I took water and gatorade at every station.
Pre race: Plain wheat bread and a banana
Mile 5: GU Energy Gel
Mile 10: GU Energy Gel
Mile 13: Took a Clif Blok (enjoyed this way more than my GUs)
Mile 15: Took some SiS GO electrolyte that they handed out
Mile 17: GU Energy Gel
Mile 20: GU Energy Gel
Post-race
I was absolutely exhausted. Went out with my family and friends to some restaurant to have pizza, french toast, and two bloody marys. Overall, I lacked discipline and made a few foolish mistakes. Hoping this is enough to BQ!

Training

First marathon. Began running in lockdown, seen vast improvements in all my distances, managing to get 5k under 19 mins, 10k under 40 mins, and half marathon under 1:40. I joined a running club in Oct 2022 and seen further improvements in all distances, so I set myself a target of completing a half marathon in under 1:30 and a marathon in under 3.30.
My training consisted on speed work on a Monday (track) and Wednesday (usually in a park or quiet area with no traffic).These sessions are provided by the coaches at my running club. Some examples of the sessions are;
Monday: 5k paced session - 20 x 200m at 5Km Pace/100m Same Time Recovery e.g if 5Km pace is 40s for 200m then 100m recovery is covered in 40s
Wednesday: 10k paced session - 6 x 5 Mins @ 10Km Pace with 2.5 Mins Jog Recovery
Monday: 7 x 800m @ 5Km Pace with 100m in 90s Jog Recovery
Wednesday: 5min, 4min, 3min, 2min, 2min, 3min, 4min, 5min @ 10k pace with half jog rec.
Monday: 10 x 3 Mins/90s Jog Recovery (10k pace)
Wednesday: 8 x 4 Mins @ Half Marathon Pace with 3 Mins Reovery at Easy Run Pace (Not a jog)
Outwith these sessions, I tried to do at least 40km over another 4 runs at an easy pace, keeping heart late below 150bpm. Total monthly kilometres always over 200km. Since the new year I have been trying to hit at least 60km per week.
I booked this marathon last summer and had no idea of a plan or targets. I completed a half marathon in 1.19.59 the end of April this year, and this gave me belief that I would be able to post a good time in this race. I would have been disappointed if I did not manage to complete it in 3.10.
The longest run I completed during my training was an easy run of 33km, about 4 weeks before the race. I was confident I would be able to finish but had no idea how my body would do after that distance at a quicker pace.

Pre-race

I done my last long run (~22km) exactly one week before the race. Easy 10km runs Monday & Tuesday, Wednesday I done 3 x 10km at target marathon pace (4.14/km) with 2 mins rest in between. Another easy run on Thursday and then complete rest Friday & Saturday. On the Wednesday I started upping my carb intake significantly, eating a lot more bread, rice, pancakes, crumpets, scones, tortilla wraps, potatoes and chips. I was feeling rather bloated for these few days so cut back a bit on the Saturday in order to be good for Sunday.
Race day: Got up at 5.30am - big bowl of porridge with a scoop of protein powder, 2 slice of toast & strong coffee. Had a cereal bar and a banana at 8am (2 hours before start). Sipped water through the morning - not too much as was wary of toilet breaks during the race.

Race

Weather on the morning was ideal - good temperature, no wind or rain. Had the potential to heat up later on in the afternoon but overall great running conditions.
Race began at 10am. This was an extremely busy race and had some very narrow points over the first 10km where it was impossible to get by anyone.
The first quarter of the race through the city is all downhill. Great scenery all along closed roads, very enjoyable and a good way to start the race and get warmed up. The streets were packed with spectators and an overall good atmosphere.
KMs 10-30 are where you really need to focus on hitting target pace. The crowds thinned out a bit although there was still locals outside their houses cheering, handing out sweets, playing music, and even a though bands/ dance groups along the way. I always race without earphones in order to take all of this in and it is truly a worthwhile experience. Plenty of water stations along this stretch and the weather was still good. Ran with a few groups during this stretch and chatted away, was lucky enough to move in front of most of them onto the next group.
There is a short gravel section around 28kms around Gosford House. Afterwards I heard a lot of people moaning about this - it certainly is a bit different from running on the road. I suppose it depends on what you are used to, I do a fair bit of trail running as well so felt comfortable. Only thing I would say is the terrain is not suited for the Nike Alphafly.
The last section of the race was by far the most difficult. Temperature had heated up to around ~14 degrees (not roasting, but for us Scots who train all through winter it is on the warmer side). Along with a few gradual inclines on the way back made for some tough kilometres. The number of people I passed on the last stretch who were cramping, being sick or simply walking grew the further I got to the finish line. There also seemed to be less water stations on this section, which is not ideal when you are in the final stages of a marathon.
The final couple of hundred metres was a flat, straight run along mats to the finish line. By far the best part - all the hard work is complete, thousands of spectators and knowing your family and friends are at the finish line waiting to congratulate you. Even better knowing when you know you have smashed every target set!

Nutrition & Strategy

When I signed up for the race I put in a target time of 3.45 - meaning I started in a pen with runners a lot slower than me. This was not ideal as it was very busy and I was stuck behind big groups of runners a lot for the first 20-30mins. I definitely could have went quicker at the beginning, maybe a blessing in disguise as I was still under target pace and perhaps allowed me to not come out the traps too quickly. I took 2 salt tablets every water station, which was every 30 mins or so. Took 1 gel at 10km, 20km then 32km. Fortunately was able to get through the whole race without stopping for the toilet. I was really comfortable up until the last 10km, I had never ran more than this so had no idea how my body would react. I had plenty of time in the bank so I dialled it back a bit to make sure I could finish without cramping or pulling a muscle. My plan before the race was to keep every kilometre below 4.15 and hold on for as long as possible.

Post-race

I am going to take a few days off to let my body recover. I have a few 10k runs booked throughout the summer and hope to achieve some PBs. The time I posted should also qualify me for London next year.

2023.06.07 04:37 aunamenerd Supply dropping out of no where

My baby is almost 10 months and in the past few weeks I just haven’t been producing as much as I used to, despite feeding him just as much and pumping the same amount or more.
He’s eating some solids, but no where near enough that I’m comfortable reducing his milk intake. He has some sensory issues that we’re working to get addressed with a feeding therapist, so for now bf is his main source of nutrition and it scares me that I might be not producing enough to keep him fed.
I have been sick with a cold the last 2 weeks or so, but it’s starting to go away. This supply drop started before I got sick, but maybe being sick exacerbated it?
Most of the advice I’ve seen for people in this sub who are worried about their supply is much earlier in their post-partum journey. I’m wondering if the advice is different for 10 months pp, or if I just need to drink more water and body armor.
I’m considering offering a bottle of formula before bed to supplement if my supply isn’t going to increase (this may help him sleep longer too, from what I hear, which would be a plus). But would this potentially cause my supply to drop even more? I could just pump before bed in place of that feeding if he’s getting formula. Thoughts on this? Also, I wouldn’t know where to begin with choosing a formula. Any advice on that process?
