If you take on too much land you’ll stretch yourself (and your wallet) too thin, but if you take on too little you could end up with a failing farm fast.
For aspiring self-reliant homesteaders or hobby farmers, figuring out just the right amount of acreage is crucial.
For answers to this foundational question, we turned to successful and well-known homesteader, small-scale farmer, educator and farming consultant Ben Godfrey of Sand Creek Farm in Cameron, TX.
Ben and his wife Alysha started out as small-scale hobby farmers and now run a successful, full-time 169-acre sustainable farm and homestead. Today, Ben shares his story, advice and insights on how you can get started on your hobby farming journey.
Ben (a country boy), his wife Alysha (a city girl) and their growing family gradually migrated from suburbia to full-time farming over the course of many years. Ben explains:
“My wife was a city girl, so I kept wanting to bring her out to the country. I started with our first house in a little subdivision, then I drew her out to a rural subdivision with about 3 acres so she could have her horses there, then I lured her out to a bigger house on around 20 acres.”
As the family fell in love with hobby farming and country life, they quickly expanded to 40 acres. All the while Ben was still running a successful construction company in town.
Ben says jokingly, “The 20 acres was really just to entice my wife in the beginning, but I had plans to purchase the 20 adjoining acres as well.”
On their 40 acres they had a small dairy and horses; grew their own produce and livestock; and had an orchard. It worked for them and allowed Ben to continue his career in construction, until…
Though Ben and Alysha were more than capable of straddling both worlds, it didn’t come without a price.
“We’d been evolving over to farming and I just enjoyed it much more,” Ben explains. “Even though the income was a lot better in construction, it caused a lot of stress and the quality of life was a lot better in farming.
“Plus in construction I was gone from the farm and my family a lot and I really wanted to be closer to my family. Now every day, with the exception of deliveries, I’m at home with them.”
Ben and Alysha now have five girls, ages 3 to 16, who help them out on the homestead.
“The type of agriculture they teach at Texas A&M is not at all like what we do here," Ben says. "We’re using agriculture that was probably taught at A&M 100 years ago, before chemicals were so prevalent. It is a lot more sustainable.”
So how did they figure out how to start their sustainable farm?
“When we bought the 40-acre hobby farm it was a blank canvas. It was basically a hay field with just a little bit of woods. We wanted to build a home, our barns, facilities and everything for a homestead. So I told my wife I thought we should visit the Amish to see how they do it.”
His wife agreed, and Ben quickly scheduled a business trip up to Ohio with the main goal of observing the Amish.
He connected with an Amish family there, and they invited Ben to bring his whole family to work and learn from them on their farms.
“I was just so impressed by the quality of their children. And from there, we went from really 'a city lifestyle while living in the country,' to a much simpler lifestyle doing a lot more as a family.”
It was through their work with the Amish that they discovered the magic of using draft horses for farming.
“After our first visit, we returned to Ohio in October and bought a team of horses and all the equipment,” Ben recalls. “We harnessed up the two horses right there at the sale barn and drove them 2 ½ miles down the road to our friends’ farm…and it was just as peaceful as can be. From then on I was hooked.”
Ben and Alysha have remained close with their Amish friends for the past 13 years, and still return to Ohio to visit and purchase horses and equipment.
To date, they’ve brought more than 200 horses from Ohio to Texas.
So, when the opportunity arose to sell their homestead (for a healthy profit) in 2007, they jumped on it and used that income to buy a bigger farm in a more rural area.
That bigger farm was 169 acres, and would soon be known by the entire sustainable farming industry as Sand Creek Farm.
Their farm is almost entirely horse-powered using techniques and equipment acquired from their Amish friends, plus a few tricks Ben’s picked up online.
The pace, peacefulness, connection and environmental benefits of using horses falls right in line with their commitment to sustainability.
As for acreage and farm design, their four aquaponic greenhouses take up about 1 acre, 5-10 acres are dedicated to produce cultivation annually and all the rest is pasture for rotational grazing.
The farm is not “certified organic” though they raise all their products using organic principles. Ben explains:
“I’ve had the certification paperwork on my desk but I just haven’t seen the value in doing it. The relationship with your customer is the biggest deal. The only reason you’d need a certification is if you’re not selling direct to your customer. But if the customer is inspecting your farm themselves then you don’t really need it.”
They also offer sustainably grown food products from other farms, like pure Vermont Maple Syrup, raw honey, soaps and wholesome breads.
Historically, the majority of their business has come from dairy, which lead customers to the farm’s other offerings, such as their CSA program.
At present, Sand Creek Farm is transitioning.
“Dairy is still a major key, but I would say ideally we’d like to be 50% aquaponics, 25% dairy and 25% field vegetables, farm-stays and on-site training,” Ben explained.
Even with their success and reputation, the Godfreys aren’t afraid to embrace change and shift their business model as they continue to learn and grow.
“If you were going to have a homestead with 1-2 horses, a family cow, and your gardens, I’d want 10 acres of pasture, 2 acres for produce, maybe a one-acre orchard and the rest of it would be buildings. So 15 acres could hold most of what you want to do.”
The Godfreys opted for larger pieces of land for their homesteads because they have five children and usually keep 7-8 horses in addition to their dairy cows. All this requires more pasture.
Ben also offers this advice to aspiring homesteaders with “real jobs” on farm location:
“I wouldn’t recommend moving way outside the city limits. About 20-30 minutes outside civilization is good, but 45 minutes and up feels a little far. Unless you can telecommute, then being further out is great.”
They offer seasonal internship programs at the farm that usually last 3-6 months, and they also hold on-site classes for those who can’t leave their full-time job to intern.
The Godfreys also offer consulting services and advice on everything from choosing your niche and the best location for your farm, to budgeting, planning, design, marketing, aquaponics and using draft horses.
“If I were them, I would invest all of your time and money now in education and information. A library of books, experience—go work on a farm, go do a farm stay somewhere and try to get as much experience as possible before you buy the land. You’ll have a much more successful enterprise if you know what you’re getting into beforehand.”

Trading in a lucrative construction business to live off the land
Like most hobby farmers, Ben’s “real job” as owner of a construction company supported the family and afforded them a comfortable living.Though Ben and Alysha were more than capable of straddling both worlds, it didn’t come without a price.

How the Godfreys tackled the sustainable farming learning curve (with help from the Amish)
Though Ben has a degree in Agricultural Development from Texas A&M, plus some previous hobby farm experience, the Godfreys knew they still had a lot to learn about how to manage a sustainable farm and homestead.“The type of agriculture they teach at Texas A&M is not at all like what we do here," Ben says. "We’re using agriculture that was probably taught at A&M 100 years ago, before chemicals were so prevalent. It is a lot more sustainable.”

I'm just starting to learn drums. I've programmed drums for quite a while, but i want to start learning to play. Will be using the kit to trigger midi for VST drums, like Superior Drummer 3.
That said, i don't care super much about the sound. I am more interested in the sheer playability and durability. Looks like the best budget contenders are either the Alesis Nitro or the Roland Td1dmk.
I hear the Roland will be better long term as far as durability. Should i just go that route? I also saw that Alesis updated some of their kits with the SE versions, are those worth looking at?
Any other notable options that i should be considering in the $600 range? Thanks so much in advance, and sorry if this was asked recently.

My wife is originally from a small village in Cambodia near a mountain. At the top of the mountain is buddhist temple (Pagoda). Near that pagoda my wife learned to make incense. There are old ladies who make incense for the pagoda and that's how she learned.
Flash forward to the USA and she moved here with me in early 2020.. and she was making the incense during the pandemic. Just as something to keep herself busy for fun.
I thought it was so different and unique. Like, no perfume smells or stuff that is too strong / irritating my eyes and lungs. None of that. It just smelled natural and good.
She wanted to try American incense so I ordered a bunch of it and we agreed, the boxes it comes in are very pretty and unique but it all smells like... fake.. I don't know how to explain but most of it just smells like perfume or like chemicals. There were a few good ones.. mostly from Japan that smelled good.
I always told her she could do well if she sells online. But when her family struggled financially due to the pandemic... she decided to take my word for it and sell her natural hand made incense.
So, to raise extra funds to send to her family (along with money from my full time job, of course) she started the incense business. I do all the computer stuff. Setup the website... design the labels in Microsoft Publisher and such.
I think you have to have a niche. What makes this incense different than all of the other incense is that it contains no oil, chemicals, dyes, mold inhibitors, charcoal, wood waste, fillers, or other B.S.
I always say, she does for incense what farmers markets or the amish do for food. It's great for those who enjoy incense but it's even great for those who hate incense. For those who say incense makes their eyes water, itchy throat, coughing, and headaches because those are all natural reactions your body has to all those chemicals.

Advice:
- Don't give up. We started very slow until last October and then it built up over time. Once you get "fans" of your products, you can see they will buy your stuff every couple of months. Take note of those customers who are your regulars. When we released a new type of incense, we sent those customers a sample for free. They really love that!! Cost us $5 for each sample if you include shipping but it was worth it!!
- Write (with a pen) a personal thank you to each of your customers. Showing gratitude and spending 20 seconds on a customer can really help you connect with those people who want to connect with you.
- The more products you have, the more you are going to sell. When we had only 2-3 incense cones to choose from.. we got few sales and each sale was like.. 1 box of incense. Once we had 10 different types of incense you can buy from us.. we got bigger sales and more often. Variety and offering free shipping when they spend $35 is huge.
- Be ready to eat some costs. I had a customer buy $5 of sandalwood powder from me. She told me it was lost in the mail Of course, that's not my fault. But i sent her a new bag of sandalwood powder for free. She ended up giving me a shout out on her Instagram and now she is a regular customer who gives me 5-star reviews. Don't be greedy and especially in the beginning... you should be ready to lose a little money on a few sales. That's the price of doing good business.
- Packaging counts. We started by printing really generic labels on little boxes. Not very exciting or fun to look at. But, when we took things seriously in October and designed labels.. man we really saw the sales go up. It's not just what you sell, it's how you present it!
- Use Chat GPT to help re-write your product descriptions.
- If you can, offer same day or next day shipping. I swear 1/4 of my 5-star reviews are about fast shipping. People really appreciate that if you can do it. Nobody wants to wait any more, sadly. Amazon and the like have set that bar higher.

Our Smart Charging Pad is a major game changer. Many of our competitors are pricing their charging pads for drones weighing less than 55 pounds at $4,000 to $15,000 per unit. Our Smart Charging Pad — which can be used to charge our ZenaDrone 1000, weighing over 250 pounds — will be priced at less than $15,000. ZenaDrone 1000 is a serious aircraft created for use by the military as well as in the oil and gas and agriculture industries. We designed it to be a workhorse and to push the limits of future technology available today. Our affordable technology has allowed us to gain market interest quickly.
Now, we will be able to seek international patents using established U.S. patent treaties. We will focus registering patents in Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Canada, Australia, South Africa and Brazil.

Lots of gorgeous homes here :) Our house was built in the 1860s and there are many built way before that. I’m happy that you enjoyed the Peggy’s Cove lighthouse webcam. We do get a lot of fog here lol. But when it isn’t foggy, the lighthouse makes for some beautiful photo backgrounds. I think that you would really like it here in Nova Scotia. The people sound as kind as the ones where you live and we have a lot of parks here too. Lots of places to hike and camp :) My thesis is about a few different threatened lichen in Atlantic Canada, predicting their population sizes and habitats, and how it may change over time using algorithms and digital mapping software (GIS). Lots of work but I’m really enjoying it so far – one more year to go. Hope that you have a wonderful day!

This is 27" 4k 60Hz RGB subpixel layout JOLED by Philips. Panel is ok, but it's philips E-line (extreme budget line).In Poland this is the cheapest oled on the market and the only one with RGB subpixel layout. Got mine for about 850 euro and I must let others know:
Example: you set Eco mode and configure it to use sRGB and change brightness to 0. Then you switch to Movie mode and set colorspace to sRGB as well and change its brightness to 40. Then you go back to Eco mode and you're at 40 brightness somehow. If you lower it to 0 you will have 0 brightness in Movie mode when you switch back to it.

- horrible reflection handling (it's almost glossy when viewing with eyes and on pictures looks same as glossy TV).Meaning, I had to swich all my themes from dark to bright because i'd just look at my room and myself whole time which was disturbing. Ironic...
- During the day I was comfortable at 5% brightness in sRGB mode for office work with bright themes or at least 20% with dark themes.
- It is indeed (imo) more than enough bright even at 20-50% setting when using from arm length.
- menu bugged as hell. In theory you have few modes like Eco, Gaming, Movie etc., but every one of them needs to be assigned the Colorspace setting.
Example: you set Eco mode and configure it to use sRGB and change brightness to 0. Then you switch to Movie mode and set colorspace to sRGB as well and change its brightness to 40. Then you go back to Eco mode and you're at 40 brightness somehow. If you lower it to 0 you will have 0 brightness in Movie mode when you switch back to it.
- changing NTSC brightness changes DCI-P3 brightness :D
- if you need 2 srgb profiles with different brightness then in theory you can just switch between srgb and rec709 which do have separate brightness setting
- otherwise if you want to change brightness when you change between office work and gaming/move at evening using the same Colorspace, then you need to navigate in OSD menu to brightness making total of 7 moves then 3-4 moves to get out of that menu. Wow.
- KVM usb upstream cable not attached so I didn't check if it's possible to upgrade firmware or if KVM works because I just don't have such cable
- good text clarity (because of 4k at 27")
- Extremely satisfying contrast (at night only (!). during the day, because of reflections, my TN [iiyama gb2730qsu-b5, quite new version] has waaay deeper blacks, but at night this oled is just incredible)
- Color spaces are rather finely tuned
- ok color uniformity, rather worse than in my TN, but not very much worse.
- What actually was surprising, that it has worse horizontal viewing angles than my TN. This oled has serious colorshift to red on the sides, i'm serious, it is worse than typical good quality TN)
- good vertical viewing angles
- well callibrated gamma curves
- not possible to overclock even when setting lower than native resolution. Frameskip at 61 already even at 1080p with blackbars. I don't really care about it but some people do.
- Philips app is just as bugged as this monitor's OSD
- I don't think it's possible to set 10bit color depth, at least I couldn't neither with HDMI nor DP
- My unit didn't have any coil whine/buzzing but we're using 230V in europe. Maybe that has some impact. Even the 230 Watt brick was quiter than samsungs bricks in their gaming monitors. Rumors say this monitor supports 90W PD but didn't check.
- Power consumption using sRGB mode at full white screen and 20 % brightness was about 30 watts. Measured with wattmeter. It comes with 26kWh sticker.
