I'll try to include all pertinent details, but essentially I want to know if there is any recourse I can take against a major financial institution that has been lying to me for two years. My father passed away unexpectedly 2 years ago at the age of 49 and with no will in the state of Texas. The heirs for the estate include myself, my older sister, and his common law spouse at the time of death (there was no formal or informal marriage certificate, but they signed a notarized piece of paper saying they were married for insurance purposes). It was not a large estate, with the major assets being the house that was solely in his name, his cars, and a large 401(k) account value around $160,000 - $190,000 depending on the time I called (the account had active investments which took a fairly large hit during 2022 while we were unable to access the account). which is the account of interest in this post. At the time of death we called all the financial institutions to notify them of the death, and provide them with the death certificate and other requested documents (affidavit of domicile, etc.). We then proceeded with probate court where I was named the administrator of the estate, and I continued to work with the financial institution in question. The process of getting in touch with them was not easy, and I would initially spend hours on hold (the longest I waited was around 5 hours before I was told that they had closed and no one could help me). Our case got bounced around from person to person, and each time I was able to get through to them a new person would have taken over our account.
Each time I called them I was told that because there was no beneficiary on the account at the time of death the only options were to transfer all the assets into an inherited IRA account in the name of the estate, or we could liquidate the positions into cash and move the money into an account, again in the name of the estate. For two years, I was told again and again that my only option was to keep the money in the name of the estate, despite this actually being a more difficult way to distribute assets and not the way that we would have wanted to deal with the assets. As of yesterday, I am now being told that this is not the case, and that because the common law spouse checked married on the death certificate that counts as a surviving spouse and that they will only distribute the assets directly to her because of their distribution policy, which effectively cuts me and my sister out of the largest portion of the estate and our inheritance. In Texas, probate laws divide estates 1/3 to the surviving spouse (including common law spouse) and 2/3 to the surviving children, of which there are two of us, and our intention has always been to follow this three way split. We are all on good terms, which is why we decided to divide assets ourselves to begin with.
My main question here is: can I take any action against the financial institution for the emotional distress and financial loss I have now suffered as a result of their negligence for the past two years? My thought is that their argument is that they go off of surviving spouse, and their proof for that is the death certificate which they have had in their possession since 2021. If that is the basis for their decision, then they have been negligent in their duty and caused me to spend hours on the phone and month waiting, while complying with all of their requests, up to submitting the application for the inherited IRA in the name of the estate, each time having to confront the pain of my father's death (reliving finding him dead in the backyard and having to call the police AND my entire family to alert every one of his death). They have caused financial harm by both blocking all of our access to this money through their terrible service, inability to provide a case manager, and most of all lack of understanding of their own policy, and also by not complying with my state's laws regarding assets belonging to a person who died with no will. Furthermore, if the entire basis is the death certificate, I don't see how that is a binding marriage contract, if I could have filled out the form differently at the time of death and there is no actual marriage certificate. I did not contest it at the time of death, because we have no desire to cut her out of the estate and want her t receive her full share, but I believe that I could change that if I tried to. If I did, would that change the way that this financial institution distributes the assets, and if that is the case I don't see how that can be a legally binding document for the purposes of heirship.
I appreciate that there may not be anything I can do; this is a big company and they tend to not be held responsible for their mistakes even when they cause harm. However, my thought process is that is I went to a doctor and they misdiagnosed me and then continued to act on this misdiagnoses for two years and it caused me harm, there would be steps I can take to right the wrong they have caused. Whether or not the misdiagnosis is intentional. While I'm empathetic of the individual and can understand how a single, poorly trained employee could make this mistake. But as this was a consistent and repeated statement, and as a company they have caused significant emotional and financial harm to me, and to the other heirs of estate, through their negligence and failure to perform their fiduciary duty. I am grateful for anyone who takes the time to read this and for any insight that you may be able to lend to this situation. Regardless of what ends up happening with the money, I cannot believe that this company doesn't have to face any consequences for their actions despite all of the pain they have caused.

This is a 90 townhome community homeowners association in New York.
The board of directors has been talking about redoing the landscaping around our community pool for several years. It's maintained but we haven't been replacing plants when they die and the landscape timbers are starting to come loose/rot. It's also near the entrance of the plan so it's not our best first impression. Point is it doesn't NEED to be done but it's been on the list for a while.
I joined the board in September 2022. At our December 2022 board meeting, the landscaping was still a topic and there was a board member assigned to get quotes for the spring. At our March 2023 meeting, the landscaping was still on the agenda and there hasn't been any progress. It seemed like a good way to help so I volunteered to do the legwork and the rest of the board agreed. I talked to contractors, got the quotes, put everything together with recommendations, sent everything to the other board members in April... and crickets. When I followed up I was told everyone is busy trying to organize the summer party (that occurs in August) and my proposal would be discussed "in the future".
Now we're into June and we haven't even discussed it. I don't have money to pay the deposit until the board approves the proposal. If we miss this season, then someone needs to get quotes all over again for next year. I just need a vote, the check for the deposit, and a signed contract and then I will handle everything with the contractor.
When I talk to neighbors, they also complain about the landscaping not getting done, but they understand the board is busy and most other things are getting done so it's not a big concern.
Except after joining the board, I realized the board is not busy. Two board members are. Of the five board members, two do everything, the third travels all the time for work and doesn't contribute, the fourth is friends with the first two and doesn't want to rock the boat, and then there's me. I originally thought the first two did everything because they didn't have help, but after being on the board for a while it seems like they do everything because they don't want to share any of the work. Despite volunteering to take on other tasks, my only job aside from this landscaping is to show up to meetings and vote.
So, any tips? Our next board meeting is next week and I plan to bring up the landscaping proposal, but if they say they are still too busy then I don't know how to respond. The two that do everything legitimately ARE busy but I can't get anything done without them.

So just to preface this, I would consider myself an 'advanced beginner' with Git. I use it for my work, but generally with very small teams (<5) in an academic/research setting where no one is a trained programmecomputer scientist/engineer.
I joined a new organization recently, it's a small company that makes surveys. They created a series of scripts to clean their data and output a word document with text/graphs/etc. I was hired to be their "professional" as the people who made the initial code are mostly grad students that are leaving school. Part of my work will be looking at their codebase and developing improvements/efficiencies/best practices.
I'm fine doing this with the code, but when it comes to Git I'm not an expert. When reviewing their files, two things jumped out immediately but maybe I just don't have a good understanding of efficient ways to use Git:

I'm fine doing this with the code, but when it comes to Git I'm not an expert. When reviewing their files, two things jumped out immediately but maybe I just don't have a good understanding of efficient ways to use Git:
- They seem to be using Github as a semi-online storage. When I went to clone their repo, it was over 2gb...They store literally EVERYTHING related to their code on their repo. That includes datasets/word docs/graphics, etc. for every single survey they have done (100+). My understanding is they should only repo the ~50 scripts (about 1.1mb) used to process the survey, and all the case-specific documentation and outputs should be stored elsewhere. Am I right thinking that's crazy what they are doing, or is that normal?
- They currently have 100+ branches in their repo. It looks like they create a new branch for every single survey, then just leave it. I'm guessing they are trying to do a type of version control where even if they make changes to the code that would break old surveys, they will have a snapshot for each survey in case they need to rerun. I can see the logic in this, but it seems unnecessarily cluttered. What was done in previous organizations I worked at was to either 1) make a clean commit every time a survey was run, so you could just go back to that commit if you needed to rerun it or 2) store the specific code used on a survey along with the results in a separate storage area, so later on if someone needed to rerun the survey it was all in one place.
But if I'm not, this is something I want to bring up to them and get changed sooner rather than later.

(One of my best orders from Spoonflower yet -- the color came out really vibrant and the text really clear!) submitted by mork-calling-orson to sewing [link] [comments] Figuring out how to arrange and cut the pattern pieces so that the text would line up was the hardest part of the whole project. I took a picture of the fabric and pattern pieces and shuffled everything around on my iPad until I figured out a configuration that (mostly) worked. This was also my first full project using any kind of stretchy fabric and first full project made on my new serger! Definitely a learning curve! I made a mock-up first out of some cheap remnant fabric from Walmart and just crossed my fingers that my serger would stay threaded. (I'm working on another project on the serger right now and just broke a needle. I replaced it but now can't seem to get the machine working properly again... so it anyone has any go-to serger resources, please let me know! I have a Brother 1034DX.) For the bodice, I used McCall's 7740, adding an inch in the waist and in the shoulder straps. The pattern calls for cutting just two ties and just doing a rolled hem around the edge, but I cut double the number of ties and just sewed them together and turned them inside out -- I think this gave it a much cleaner look. I traced the shorts pattern from a pair of pants of mine -- I wanted a flat look in the front but gathered fabric in the back. Although for my first attempt at tracing the pattern, I forgot to add seam allowance... so I learned that lesson the hard way. The whole romper is lined with a lightweight white jersey -- attached along the top bodice edges but not at the hem of the shorts. I cut the shorts lining a couple inches shorter than the shell and hemmed it separately to keep everything flowy. I carefully sewed tiny silver beads around the word "mastermind" on the front before adding the bodice lining -- I didn't want the stitching to go through both layers. This process honestly took longer than the rest of the construction combined. I'm really proud of how it turned out! A lot of learning in one project! |

One morning I miss judged it and ‘ kerbed it ‘ horrible noise and since then it’s sheer pot luck wether I do the same thing every morning . I have tried different approaches going wider, hugging it tighter . It always ends in me Mounting the kerb, I’ve got thick skin so I am not embarrassed but I am genuinely a bit disconcerted. I actually spent some time on a Saturday morning practicing driving left tightly in an empty car park . Trying to learn exactly where my front wheels are . It’s as though I can not judge where my front wheels are in relation to this particular tight bend over the bonnet . I’ve had a passenger with me and they lean out of the window and say I am too far over to the right but when I listen to them and tuck it in tighter it still results in mounting the kerb . In the big van I have no issues with this same corner ?! Has anyone else experienced something similar ? Why can I suddenly not tackle this one minor corner I face daily ?! What can I do ? I might have a word with the security guard and see if he will let me practice for a while going in and out of there on my day off I will get the piss taken out of me though lol |

After playing for a while, I decided to install some mods into it thinking that it would be no more difficult to manage than The Sims 4. Oh how wrong I was. I was having issues with being able to load the DLCs The Descent and The Jaws of Hakkon (Hadn't tried Trespasser). Every time I tried to travel there I was met with a black screen, the logo frozen in the corner but still able to move my mouse. After spending time scouring Reddit forums and google questions, I linked the issue to having mods installed that were not supported in the DLCs. I assumed it would be easy enough to remove the mods and continue to play without them now I had finished the main storyline. I had followed instructions for the installation of DAI Mods and had created some back up patch folders before I began to change anything in the game. I carefully uninstalled them however now, when I go to load my save, I get the error 'This save data was created with a newer version of the game' (Image attached). I have tried repairing the game through Steam using the verify files integrity option, as well as uninstalling and redownloading the game several times. There is no option on the EA app to repair it as many suggestions say, as I purchased it through Steam. I have altered the version number in the notes. My patch folder from the mods is not working and neither are the clean patch back ups I had made before. I spoke with EA technical support and to be honest they were incredibly unhelpful. EA - I will surely check if I can help you in fixing your Dragon Age: Inquisition issue.EA - Its in game information that I am unable to share with you. You will get update via in game notification once new patch will get out. I am feeling very lost and frustrated as what to do now. I have almost 122 hours in it so desperately do not want to lose my save. Obviously I've messed with things beyond my technical expertise and would greatly appreciate any advice if someone has encountered this issue before. It's been a little over 3 months since I started tretinoin and I know results take at least 3/4 months to show. But it's been so hard on me. I wake up every single day with new pimples.
I'm starting to regret using tretinoin. Before I used tretinoin i used Clindamycin, that was truly the ONLY medication that helped my acne, my skin was acne-free but I was only allowed to use it for max 3 months. My acne came back days after I stopped using Clindamycin
I know I should be at least waiting 3/4 months before my judgment but I never excepted to get this much acne. Especially since most of my acne grow under my skin

A bit of context: we have a 9 week old new baby and my mother who lived with us for the duration of my pregnancy (I had HG and needed help) has finally gone home. Also, our toddler has moved out of the crib in the nursery (his choice) to a toddler bed in a new room. These are three HUGE changes. As a result of these changes (I’m assuming), our previously sleep trained 2 year old who would basically put himself to bed (letting us know he wanted to get in the crib and lie down and we would leave) is having such bad separation anxiety he’s crying so hard he’s throwing up if one of us doesn’t stay and sleep with him. Any advice on how to get him to happily, or at least comfortably, sleep on his own again?

yesterday, i (17m) went to my friends house party and stayed over with a number of classmates and new people. we got really drunk and later on in the night smoked some weed, which hit me too hard and i started tweaking the fuck out. i excused myself to go to the bathroom and started throwing my guts up for 2 hours. it was at this point my body was pushing everything out of me with all its might and i had no control and i ended up shitting my pants on accident. and it wasn’t just a tiny bit.
i woke up at 5am on the bathroom floor (there was no shower, just a toilet, tap and towel). i cleaned everything up as much as i could but only had one pair of underwear. i tried scrubbing as much as i could w the toilet paper but was forced to resort to using the towel and some soap to get the shit off my underwear. i absolutely stunk and sprayed so hard with deodorant to try and mask it but it was no use. i left the house at 7am before more people started to wake up but forgot to put the towel i used in the washing machine. it wasn’t covered in shit but a smell was defo noticeable.
none of them have mentioned anything to me about it, and i’m sure they must have clocked on to something. i apologised to the host for vomiting but haven’t bought myself up to tell ANYONE about this not even my best friend. i’ve never felt more disgusting and embarrassed in my life. i’m so nervous to see them again in class on monday ://
