"She ain't worth it, bro." - Rep. AOC (D-NY) telling an unimpeachable truth while pulling Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) away from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who was saying typical MTG shit

Judiciary In The Coal Mine

Once Republicans narrowly took back the House, manufactured scandals and abuse of oversight power were inevitable. Enter: Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH)!
So what do the ranking Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee actually have to support their conspiracy theory? Not much.
Okay, Jim, you want to talk about weaponization of government? Let’s! Confronted with the fact that these “witnesses” have taken money from a Trump front group, Jordan again, freaked the fuck out and yelled “They got a family! How are they supposed to feed their family?” You’re right, Jim, there is literally no other way that they could. Excellent point. Airtight arguments all around. Can’t wait to see what you guys do next.

Under The Radar

Once again, we gotta talk about Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). The 89-year-old Senator has officially returned to the Capitol after a two-month absence, yes, but new reports indicate that her recent health problems were even more serious than previously reported, and her latest interview with Slate, in which she denied having been away from the Senate at all is not inspiring confidence in her mental acuity or ability to fulfill her duties. Feinstein suffered several complications after being hospitalized for shingles back in February, including a previously-unreported case of encephalitis. Encephalitis, which is swelling of the brain, can leave patients with lasting memory and language problems, sleep disorders, periods of confusion, and other physical and cognitive challenges. Feinstein has already suffered substantial memory issues that have led many to question her fitness to serve. Even those who have long been close to Feinstein called her appearance “frightening” and worry it shows she was not ready to return to work. Calls for Feinstein to resign are not “misogynistic” as some Democratic establishment figures have intimated, particularly because Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has indicated that he would appoint a Black woman to serve as interim senator. California is a state of 40 million people, already under-represented by the unfairness of the Senate. It at least deserves two competent senators.

Be Smarter

Los Angeles County Inspector General Max Huntsman alleges that 35 deputies in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are suspected members of notorious deputy gangs. Gangs within the LASD have garnered attention before, and the two in question today are the Executioners of the Compton station, and the Banditos operating out of the East L.A. station. Huntsman told the Los Angeles Times that his department “conducted incomplete internal affairs investigations into the Banditos and Executioners, failing to identify all members,” and therefore all deputies are being forced to show their tattoos and disclose the identity of anyone else who has them. There was almost immediate pushback from some deputies (I wonder why!!) who turned to the union that represents them to challenge the request. A 2021 state law gave inspectors general the authority to investigate law-enforcement gangs by requiring cooperation from all agencies. Although the letter doesn’t specify what happens if an individual deputy refuses to comply, the law states that failing to cooperate with an investigation into police misconduct can be grounds for decertification. But, you know, it sounds like this is a group of guys with nothing to hide, so I’m sure it will be fine!

2023.04.25 04:18 SomethingTouchesBack Where The Bison Sleep

"Drop-ship 45, Perform final check."
Private Anna Jones checked the restraints securing her in her cocoon (the Brass preferred that term to "crash chair"). Her cocoon was designed to hold all 54 kilograms of Anna while wearing her 22 kilos of gear, including her rifle and extra magazines, even during the hellacious forces of deceleration and impact. Satisfied, Anna kept her head against the pillow and concentrated on calming her breathing. Her mind wandered back to the before-times...
The late-spring sun beat with unusual warmth on the flat prairie land east of Calgary, giving the still air a slight thermal shimmer. Eight-year-old Anna Jones and her nine-year-old neighbor Bobby were exploring the reeds in the marshy depression that separated their two families' farms. Bobby, like Anna, was a little short for his age, and an escaping curl fell over his forehead like the fur on the heads of the bison in the nearby pasture.
Anna's hand suddenly shot into the water, emerging in a fist. Opening it, she exposed a dark brown bug about two centimeters long. "It's a pred... pred... It's a diving beetle!" she said as she broke into a wide, open smile.
Bobby, unlike Anna, was ahead of his grade in reading, especially anything he thought of as "science." Employing his most pretentious tone, he said, "Predaceous diving beetle. Did you know that the brown ones are local? Dytiscus circumcinctus are usually blackish or even dark green. But all of them have yellow rings around their eyes. They are voracious hunters that will eat anything they can catch, especially mosquito larvae."
"Good! Go eat more mosquitoes!" said Anna, returning the harmless insect to the water.
Anna was briefly startled out of her memories by the sucking gasp of the hatch closing between the drop-ship and its interstellar carrier. The air inside became very still and a disembodied voice announced "Drop-ship 45 is secure for drop."
As they watched the beetle dive away, Bobby said, "I'm going to become a scientist." Then, looking up at the sky, he said, "I'm going to join the interstellar program and get as far away from this farm as I can go. On the news last night, they reported that the colony on Aaru just hit one million settlers."
Anna had heard Bobby's older brother grumble about how much time Bobby spent on his computer, avoiding farm work. "You told me about Aaru." Anna pondered deeply, trying to not look stupid in front of her friend. "That's the one named after the ancient Egyptian world of the afterlife, right?"
"Yes! A garden world of prairies and forests thirty light-years away!"
Anna turned and looked across her family's ranch. Most of the bison were lying down, sleeping through the afternoon heat. Grass and vibrant wildflowers carpeted the ground between the shaggy brown mounds. A pungent mix of marsh decay, sweet flowers, grass pollen, and bison dung hung in the air. Anna raised her eyes and watched the dark silhouette of a hawk silently descending through the clear blue sky. "I like it here. I like warm days when the bison sleep. Why would I go thirty light-years to see another prairie? "
A hard jolt signaled separation from the drop-ship carrier, like being hit in the back of the chair with a baseball bat. An even harder acceleration signaled the drop-ship powering into its reentry trajectory. As the engines cut off a few seconds later, lesser bumps indicated the separation of the first round of decoys, and Anna felt free-fall's weightlessness and serene silence for a brief few minutes.
It was Anna's tenth birthday, which meant it was the tenth anniversary of the death of her mother. Every year, Anna's father somberly remembered one of those two events. A picture above the hearth showed her father, arm around her mother, standing at the end of the driveway. In that picture, he was tall, rawboned, and beardless. Light smoldered in his gold-flecked blue eyes. Bison were in the field to the left, the calving barn was back a bit on the right, and their new house stood directly behind them in the background.
Anna found her father, as she always did on this anniversary, standing, staring at that picture, with a glass in one hand and a half-full bottle of Crown Royal in the other.
The big screen on the left wall was projecting a news feed, and Anna sat down to watch an article about the colonies on Aaru being under attack. Anna took a passing interest in the images of hordes of creatures that, at first glance, looked remarkably like the diving beetles out in the marsh... Except these beetles were four meters long, and the square-cube law dictated that their legs were straight pillars, more like those of deer than of insects. Their back pair were just under a meter long, while the middle pair were nearly two meters long, holding the whole body at a pronounced slope. Where the front pair of legs should have been, these aliens had manipulator arms that, in the videos, were holding some gnarly-looking weapons. The similarity to beetles had earned the aliens the media moniker "Dytids."
Anna looked once more at her motionless father before grabbing her coat and black rubber farm boots and stepping into the crisp autumn air. "Happy birthday, Anna," she thought. A few bison were standing together in the southeast pasture. Above them, geese were making their way south, their silhouettes against the hazy sky looking almost like a formation of fighters.
As the drop-ship entered the upper atmosphere, the tranquility of free-fall was replaced by shimmies, tremors, and a rumble like the digestive sounds that emanate from the soft belly of a contented bison laying in the midday sun.
Fourteen-year-old Anna and her friend Bobby were halfway across the pasture when they discovered it was no longer empty. A bison bull stepped out from behind a bush near the far side. His profile spoke of power and ageless strength. He stood 2 meters at the shoulder and was 3.5 meters long, a thousand kilos of hormonal rage.
Always one for book smarts, Bobby whispered, "A bison can reach fifty-six kilometers per hour, while the fastest human on record managed only thirty-two kilometers per hour in the fifty-meter dash."
"That's because," said Anna as she turned and ran, "the human wasn't being chased by a bison." She was already diving between the barbed-wire fence strands when she heard Bobby's piercing scream behind her.
Irony is the most potent force in the universe; Bobby would never leave Earth, and Anna was dropping onto Aaru. As the amplitude of the vibration intensified, Anna felt herself getting pulled further into her cocoon, and the rumble of a contented bison transformed into the bellow of a charging bull.
In response to the attack, the government instituted a massive research and development effort to create the technologies necessary for a real interstellar navy: innovations in sensors, weapons, communications, and tactics that work at vast distances and during faster-than-light travel. It was a boom time for people in the technology and manufacturing sectors, but much less so for bison farmers. As taxes and costs increased, Anna's father clenched his mouth tighter, and the "us" in "us versus them" got smaller and smaller.
Meanwhile, the Dytids, when they weren’t hunting down settlers, were fortifying the Hell out of Aaru. Anything that entered orbit above the planet was destroyed, as were any shuttles that attempted atmospheric entry.
The rumble and vibration were replaced by a tortured scream and violent shaking as the atmosphere tried, unsuccessfully, to get out of the way of the falling drop-ship. The ablative heat shielding added its material to the wall of flame engulfing the inbound troops. Somewhere in the maelstrom, another round of decoys added their trails to the confusion.
From the day Anna got her driver's license, she spent as much time at Bobby's new home, in town and closer to medical care, as she could get away with. But the gap between their worlds was growing, and Anna felt more and more ignorant and left behind.
"Oh God, Anna! You can't sneak from space to a planet's surface! It's high-school physics; descending into a gravity well converts potential energy into kinetic energy. The velocity you had while in orbit represents more kinetic energy. The raw amount of kinetic energy you need to dissipate will be seen. It doesn't matter if you employ a fiery aerobraking maneuver or use godawful big engines; there is nothing subtle about an atmospheric entry."
At nine G's, her cocoon enveloped her tight enough to give anybody claustrophobia. Breathing became labored, like a bison sitting on her chest, and her eyes felt like they were about to go somewhere else.
"Look," Bobby continued, "there are two forms of camouflage, the kind where your adversary doesn't see you, and the kind where you blind the adversary with too much signal so they can't get a lock on you. The first approach doesn't work for atmospheric reentry, so we're going with the second approach. The drop-ships have ablative heat shields that not only dissipate energy but convert it into a massive fireball of ionized atmosphere, plasma, and fine bits of radio-reflective metal. We will drop hundreds of drop-ships accompanied by thousands of small decoys that produce fireballs that look just like the drop-ships. The fireballs will overlap so that planetary defenses cannot predict where the actual ships are within the cloud of fire and radar reflections. Still, time is our enemy. The longer we are in descent, the more of us that will get intercepted. To get around this, we will come in at as steep an angle as possible. Where a shuttle traverses thousands of kilometers around the planet to maintain no more than one and a half gravities of deceleration, the first space capsules, like Apollo, had much shorter horizontal tracks by hitting a maximum deceleration in the six to seven gravity range. The drop-ships will sustain nine gravities through much of the descent, shortening that track even further. A side effect will be even bigger fire displays!" Bobby's eyes lit up at the thought.
Following a predictable path meant death, so the drop-ship rolled violently, using its asymmetrical aerodynamics to jink around within the maelstrom of fire. "Well, Bobby, it feels a little different when you’re here," thought Anna. She could not help but think about why the non-commissioned troops called it a crash chair.
It was a bitterly cold day. The bison were safely tucked away in the barns, and the relentless wind scoured the snow and ice from the beige stubble of the fields. Not a single bird marred the blank sky. Eighteen-year-old Anna stood at the kitchen table and stared at the curt government statement as if that would somehow change the words. "ORDER TO REPORT FOR INDUCTION." Anna had never been anywhere. Now the government needed cannon fodder. When she showed the statement to her father, he acted like being inducted was HER fault, that, whether through spite or a character flaw, she was doing this to him. There was a long, brittle silence before he said, "You're an idiot." Then, he turned and walked stiffly away. She found him later, in the living room, a glass in one hand and a bottle of Crown Royal in the other, staring at the picture of him and her mother. "The tighter he tries to hang on to his world, the smaller it gets, sublimating like old snow in the winter sun," Anna thought. She picked up what few possessions she would take and walked alone to the main road.
To make drop-ships as small of targets as possible, their design sacrificed regenerative life support and ascent engines. Parachutes and large landing jets were also excluded because time above the ground is not your friend. It was a fast one-way trip to the planet's surface with only the air in the cabin until the door opened. If you landed in deep water, you were screwed. If the lander bounced, landed on a slope and rolled over, or otherwise ended out such that you couldn’t open the door, you were screwed. Theoretically, if you hit good ground, the impact impulse would not exceed twenty gravities, but even that much was likely to be very painful and sometimes cause internal damage. Humans had never tried this before, and the Brass acknowledged that losses on landing could be very high. They thoughtfully dropped A LOT of drop-ships to make up for it. Which somehow wasn't much consolation to Anna.
The group of infantry in a single drop-ship is called a "stick," a term that dates back to the days of paratroopers when the Load-master would use a stick of chalk to count on the outside of the aircraft how many paratroopers had been loaded on board (the pilots needed this information for weight and balance calculations). Anna's Stick was gathered for their pre-drop briefing. Lieutenant Bowman explained that drop-ships would be deployed all along the planned track for the Heavies, the big shuttles capable of carrying armored units down and drop-ships back up. "Our symbol is the hammer. Thor's hammer. Because, when the need is immediate and extreme, we fall on the enemy like a thunderbolt from the skies. Our mission is to locate the Dytid ground-to-space weapon sites so the Navy can pound them to dust from above," he said. "Drop-ships are one-way. If we cannot secure the entire entry corridor for the Heavies, there is no Plan B. So remember: focus on securing the corridor, NOT on engaging the Dytid ground troops directly. That said, we can expect the Dytids to be less than cooperative about this plan, so make sure your weapons are clean and working smoothly, and you have a full load of ammunition."
Anna always had confusing emotions when being talked to by Lieutenant Bowman. On the one hand, he was smart, fair, and trying very hard to be a good stick leader. But on the other hand, the compelling blue eyes, the firm features, the confident set of his shoulders all had a disturbing physical resemblance to the way her father looked in the old picture. Especially his eyes. It made Anna feel like she was on the verge of disappointing him and she tended to withdraw whenever he looked at her.
It was, Anna felt, ironic that Lieutenant Bowman elicited those feelings in her when, she had been led to believe, it would typically be a Sergeant's job to make Privates feel small. Anna's Sergeant, Sergeant Sorensen, sitting to her left at the briefing, fit the stereotype. He was a massive boxy hulk of a Dane, with military-chopped blond hair and that projecting "you are nothing" voice that all Sergeants must go to a special school to learn. So it very much surprised Anna when Sergeant Sorensen put his huge paw over her trembling fingers and said, "I, too, am scared. But do your job through your fear and the worst that will happen is that Freya will welcome you home as one of her own." Anna had no clue who Freya was, but the Sergeant's actions did stop her from shaking-- for a while.
Anna was jarred from her memories by the crushing impact as the drop-ship, to use the term loosely, "landed." It was good ground, and the drop-ship came to rest upright, hull intact and buried just shy of the base of the door. It would have been a textbook drop if only the patch of prairie they landed in hadn't already been occupied. The scream of tortured air was replaced by the church-bell cacophony of spent shell casings pouring across the armor plating as the navy "bus drivers" moved from landing the drop-ship to manning the top guns. Lieutenant Bowman shouted from the back of the infantry tube, "HOT LANDING. EVERYBODY UP. EVERYBODY OUT. Get clear of the ship before they lay-in their artillery on us."
Anna did not make friends easily, and of the thirty soldiers comprising her Stick, the only one she was truly comfortable around was Private Flores. Anna was attracted to him because, although his appearance was utterly different from Bobby, his mannerisms and presence were the same. Private Flores was a wiry kid, small-boned and medium height. His smooth olive skin stretched over high cheekbones. His hands were beautiful, long-fingered and strong. English was not his first language. Anna understood he was from somewhere far south of Calgary, but, like her father, Anna was a little weak on geography, or much of anything really, beyond the expansive flat horizon of the northern prairie.
Twenty-nine soldiers disentangled themselves from their now-deflated cocoons and took position for disembarkation. As they did so, Anna noted that Private Flores, in the cocoon across from her, was not moving, a trace of blood showing in his nose and at the corner of his mouth. Turning toward the door, Anna was now facing the backpack of Sergeant Sorensen. Somehow, the same MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) that dwarfed Anna looked like a knapsack on the broad, muscular back of the Viking before her. When the door dropped, the Sergeant would be first on the ground, followed by Anna and then the other still-mobile Privates, with Lieutenant Bowman bringing up the rear. Lined up in the metal confines of the drop-ship, Anna wondered if this is how bison felt waiting in line to enter the knocking chute.
It was Anna’s first time participating in the slaughter of the mature bison. The bull had been cajoled into the tight confines of the metal knocking chute, awaiting its fate. Anna reached in with the captive-bolt stunner, positioned it on the bull’s forehead, and fired. The bull staggered, its thousand-kilo mass of fur and muscle slamming against the side of the knocking chute with a distinctive thump. But it was Anna’s first time, and the positioning of the stunner hadn’t been good. She watched in horror as the bison’s eyes rolled in their sockets, seemingly looking right at her. Her father had to reach in with the backup stunner to finish the job.
As Anna held her weapon ready, she became acutely aware that the cacophony of shell casings had stopped, but the ping of incoming rounds had not. Had the Navy guys topside run out of ammunition, or were they dead? Just then, Sergeant Sorensen released the door. The heavy armored door dropped onto the firm grassy turf beyond with a sound like a bison falling against the side of the knocking chute. Once down, the door formed a ramp with only a minor down-slope, a testament to how far the drop-ship had buried itself in the prairie loam. The Sergeant stepped onto the ramp, where a barrage of incoming rounds from the right tore through him. As he fell forward along the ramp, his body twisting slightly to face the enemy in death, Anna threw herself to the ramp on his left, using the massive hulk of the Viking as cover. Bringing her weapon over the top of him, she saw a veritable wall of Dytids swarming across the prairie toward them. She sprayed rounds into the swarm, as the top guns had done earlier, but what the Dytids lacked in tactics, they made up for in numbers. They just kept coming.
However, the Dytid line was becoming ragged. Anna noticed, without really thinking about it, that their middle legs had locking knees, just like Human legs. As a result, as the Dytids died, they didn't drop down vertically but tended to either tip forward or slump backward before dropping, momentarily blocking the view for the Dytids behind them. Anna shouted for cover fire and rolled over the dead Sergeant without waiting to see who was listening. Stooping low, she took off, running directly toward the latest Dytids to die.
Anna's mind went to a briefing during boot camp: "There is an expectation that an interstellar species will have a certain level of socialization; that they will try to communicate first, and attack only when communication fails, that they understand inter-species trade increases the wealth of each side, that they will recognize that other interstellar species have value and a right to exist as a culture. The Dytids aren't like that. The Dytids spread like army ants, sending out scouts in every direction and then massing in the direction of found food or resources. That's all anybody else is to them: food or resources. They don't build their own; they only take."
Dodging around the corpses in front, Anna found herself face-to-hip with the mass of still-living Dytids. She pounded two shots into the bug at her front-right and two more into the bug at her front-left before shooting the one directly in front of her. Shooting them in the head was impractical from her angle, so Anna tried to shoot them in the thorax instead. But she was too close. She got one shot into the lower thorax for the one directly in front, but the second shot tore through the Dytid's abdomen, releasing a shower of gooey and slightly chunky gray-green slime. As the ballast of viscera and abdominal fluid drained from the back end of the Dytid, it tipped forward on its rigid middle legs like a teeter-totter, threatening to come down right on top of her. With nowhere else to go, Anna ran forward to stand, hunched over, between those two tall legs. But the bug kept tipping, its abdomen rising higher and higher. Soon Anna was going to be exposed again, so when the abdomen got clear of her line of sight, she fired; two rounds into the bug to her front-right, two to her front-left, and then, as the abdomen rose higher still, two into the bug now in front of her. Again, the first round went into its abdomen, which she could get a clear shot at first, and the second into its thorax. Holding her mouth tightly closed, she ran through the shower of guts from the first bug to stand between the middle legs of the second bug. The Dytids were packed so close together that Anna found herself falling into a rhythm: two shots right, two shots left, two shots forward, clamp her mouth closed, and run.
It was chipping time. Anna's job was to grab the young bison's horns and twist its head around until the bison dropped on its side. Then her father would insert the branding microchip under the skin just ahead of its hump. "Hold him still!" her father kept shouting at her. The first dozen calves went without issue. But as Anna was holding the current bison youngster down, a yearling bull wandered over. His bulbous nose dominated his meaty features as he proceeded to lick the salt off Anna's face with his long raspy blue tongue. Using all her strength to hold the calf still, Anna could not push the yearling away. Bison breath was, she concluded, the very worst smell Anna had ever encountered.
The abdominal fluid shower Anna was running through was way, way worse than bison breath, and as Anna killed yet another Dytid, she marveled that she could breathe at all without gagging. She had no way of knowing...
Two shots right, two shots left, two shots forward, clamp, and run.
...that the goo was probably saving her life. Where Humans "see" mostly with their eyes, Dytids, like many insects, "see" their world predominantly through smell and vibration. Sight, for them, is a secondary sense, like hearing is for Humans. As a result, the pungent goo rendered Anna nearly undetectable to the Dytids. They had no idea what was causing the havoc in their midst and kept crowding closer to try to find out.
Two shots right, two shots left, two shots forward, clamp, and run.
Lieutenant Bowman said to get away from the drop-ship, so Anna ran. She was only vaguely aware of other shots being fired around her, indicating that other infantry had also gotten clear of the drop-ship.
Two shots right, two shots left, two shots forward, clamp, and run.
Bobby pointed at one of the screens on his desk. "Look at this, Anna. Our Navy has taken the high ground from the Dytids!"
"Isn't our 'navy' just a few interstellar freighters with weapons strapped on?" said Anna, wrinkling her forehead at the screen.
"Yes," said Bobby, "I mean, historically, practically all navies start out as merchant ships with guns attached; until the government can build real combat ships. But here's the odd thing... the Dytid ships are also unarmed merchant ships. Who in their right mind would start an invasion with unarmed ships? In fact, they are saying that the salvaged Dytid ships seem to be remarkably poorly designed for Dytid anatomy. This discussion is all over the web." From the permanent comfort of his wheelchair, Bobby had access to much more diverse information sources than the sole Grievance News Network that Anna's father depended on. "One of the prevailing theories is that the Dytids did not actually build their ships at all. Maybe somebody else tried to colonize their world, not realizing the Dytids were a threat, and their colonies got overrun."
Two shots right, two shots left, two shots forward, clamp and run. Anna felt the ground tremor under her and sensed the Dytids bunching tighter and further getting in each other's way.
There was no doubt that, in the years following the arrival of Dytids on Aaru, the Dytids had added Human ships and weapons to their arsenal; ships and weapons captured from overrun settlements.
The Humans, meanwhile, were building up a real navy; a purpose-built navy.
Two shots right, two shots left, two shots forward, clamp, and run. Anna felt the ground tremor again.
Anna was out by the marsh. It was just before twilight, and the barn swallows were eating insects off the water's surface. She watched them swoop down, skim just above the water for an instant, pick a bug out of it, swoop back up to altitude, and then turn for the next pass.
With the third tremor, Anna realized a Dytid Surface-to-Space installation somewhere to her left just bit the dust. Far above her, a brave Terran destroyer was skimming the atmosphere like a barn swallow, providing fire support to some infantry spotter on the ground before pulling away for another pass. Not all the drop-ships had come down within shooting range of a Dytid swarm, the lucky bastards.
Two shots left, two shots right, two shots forward, clamp, and run.
Two shots left, two shots right, two shots forward, clamp, and run...
As the abdomen of the latest dying Dytid lifted, Anna swept her weapon around in a near trance. The only sound in her ears was the roar of adrenaline.
Clear left, clear right, clear forward, clamp, and run.
Clear left, clear right, clear forward, clamp, and... and...
Anna paused, trying to make sense of the empty prairie ahead of her that looked so much like home. A gentle breeze rustled the flowers under a warm sun.
A quiet voice slowly permeated the fog of her mind. She wondered if it was that Freya woman that Sergeant Sorensen spoke of... but no, this sounded more like a male voice...
"Private... Jones... Private... Jones... STAND... DOWN."
Anna shifted her rifle until it rested stock high and barrel low as she slowly turned.
Lieutenant Bowman stood three or four meters behind her, hunched over, hands on his knees, trying to breathe. Spread out in a broad "V" behind him, a few other soldiers had taken a similar stance. All of them were coated with thick ghillie suits of bug viscera, testimony that those who survived had followed Anna's example of getting under the beetles. Lieutenant Bowman began laughing and, raising his gaze to her, said, "Private Jones, GOD DAMN, YOU ARE FAST!" In his eyes, so like those of her father, Anna saw something she had never seen before— respect.
The start of a smile pulled at the corner of Anna's mouth. She looked past the Lieutenant to the field of dead Dytids, their brown bodies resembling the humps of sleeping bison. Beyond them sat the distant drop-ship. Anna raised her eyes and watched the dark silhouette of a Heavy silently descending through the clear blue sky.

Following yet another recent documentary about this case pointing to "another killer" I thought I would share some of my research on this case and why I come to the conclusion that Jack Whomes and Mickey Steele are guilty of the Rettendon Range rover murders.
Patrick Tate and Tony Tucker were planning or at least making threats to kill Steele (Patricks girlfriend testified this at trial). So Steele engineered a trap to lure them into Rettendon under false pretences then kill them.
Patrick, Tony and Rolfe suddenly liked Steele as he had promised them riches. We know this because Craig Rolfe was so exited about it he couldn't keep his mouth shut and told his girlfriend.
Here is what Craig Rolfe's girlfriend told the police BEFORE Darren Nichols was even thought of by the police.
"I understood that STEELE had been asked by a London based drugs firm to import 30 kilos of Charlie (Cocaine) and I believe that he was going to bring it in by plane from Holland. He had told Pat TATE that he was going to be given fifty thousand pounds as an up front payment to take to Holland and he was going to bring the Charlie back in company with a member of the London firm.
"The idea was that Pat TATE and Tony TUCKER would rob the firm of the Charlie when it arrived over here. STEELE had stated that he wanted to share it between them and had told the firm that he was going to land near to Clacton. Craig told me that STEELE was planning to actually land in South Essex but I never knew exactly where this was likely to be. Craig, Tony and Pat had previously obtained a machine gun from a man called Mad Mick BOWMAN and the details of this are subject of a previous statement."
This is how Steele ended up on the police radar. Not Darren Nichols. Notice how Patricks GF fails to mention Whomes and Nicholls. That is because Steele would not mention their involement to Patrick because Whomes part is to shoot them and Nicholls being the getaway driver. Once they focused on Steele, they then homed in on Nicholls as he worked for Steele's drug business and was the weakest link.
And so, Patrick Tate, Tony Tucker and Craig Rolfe drive to the middle of nowhere (along with the guy they had not so long ago threatened to kill) in the middle of the night to plan/rehurse the robbery of the aircraft. Did Steele tell them it was best to do this at night to familairize themselves for a night time assault on the aircraft or were Tate and Tucker just stupid and too exited about the money? I will let Craig Rolfe's girlfriend answer that question
"We were going out because they believed they were coming into money and they were going to have a pre-celebration. Craig phoned me at work in the afternoon and told me that Mickey STEELE had contacted Pat TATE and said that he wanted to meet with TATE and TUCKER to go and look at somewhere they could land a light aircraft."
When all is said and done and Nicholls pics up Whomes and Steele after the shootings. Nicholls overhears two important details said between Whomes and Steele in the car.
One being that Steele got worried when Patricks girlfriend (Sarah) called him on his mobile when he was in the range rover with Patrick. We know this phone call happened and we know that Steele would be worried since Steele and Patrick both told Sarah they had it in for eachother. Thus if Patick had told Sarah that Steele was with him in the car, she could have raised his suspicions.
The other import thing Nicholls overhears from them is that Patrick "squealed like a baby". This also corroborated by the crime scene. Tony Tuckers body was looking straight ahead with his hands in his lap while Craig Rolfle was also looking straight ahead, feet still on the pedal. They had been killed more or less instantly. Patrick on the other hand was found in the corner leaning in a fetal like position with his hands covering his face. Hence he reacted and "squealed like a baby" and who wouldn't in that situation? So Whomes and Steele revealed things to Nicholls that only the killers would know. Nicholls testimony matches what Craig Rolfe told his GF also.
I have read through Jack Whomes questioning under caution. When asked what he done on the night in question his reply was simply "I have never been to Rettendon". This is a lie, phone records show not only has he been to Rettendon but he was there on the night of the murders.
DS WILLS: Right okay I accept that Jack and I have listened to what you say (pause). We have got a duty to ask you these questions Jack and this Caution is as much for us as it is for you alright and it says that you do not have to say anything, you don't. It also says that if you do not mention when questioned something which you later rely on in Court it may harm your defence, now if you're not questioned then you don't get the opportunity to either mention it or not to mention it which has implications with both of us, that's why we ask the questions and I accept what you say you say to me I know nothing about I was not involved in these murders. We then ask you were you in Rettendon on the 061295 and I haven't had an answer yet (pause).
Jack WHOMES: I think I've said my piece
DS WILLS: I'm not take I don't take that as an answer to the question that's a saying you think you've said your piece
Jack WHOMES: Well I'm sorry it's best I don't answer
DS WILLS: Okay it's best you don't answer that's what you said (pause) why's that (Pause)
Paul ROACH: I'll remind you of my clients answer. When you said to him have you been to Rettendon he said no.
DS WILLS: I'm sorry is that correct Jack that you hadn't been to Rettendon
Paul ROACH: Been to Rettendon - No and also as far as
DS WILLS: I'm sorry you're answering the question, if you're saying that's what your client said, now I ask him to confirm that
Paul ROACH: No no
DS WILLS: Cause I didn't hear that
Paul ROACH: No he did say: have you been to Rettendon, he answered no
Jack WHOMES: I will clear it for you
Paul ROACH: Please
DS WILLS: I have to ask the question again cause it's getting confusing. Have you ever or were you in 061295 did you go to Rettendon at all
Jack WHOMES: I have never been to Rettendon
DS WILLS: Right "
Moreover, Darren Nicholls never actually testified that Steele and Whomes committed the murders. What he did say is that he drove them to a location near Rettendon and later received a phone call from Whomes on his mobile to pick them up somewhere nearby.
This is all corroborated by the cell tower evidence and call times recorded by the telecom provider.
Whomes made calls to Tucker and Tate on the day of the murders.
Patricks girlfriend called him on his mobile shortly before the murders. Nicholls knew of this phone call from overhearing a conversation between Steele and Wholmes after the murders.
Not long after that phone call ended Jack Whomes mobile called Nicholls mobile. According to Nicholls. Whomes said "pick us up" this is corroborated by the telecom records showing the call was four seconds long.
Not long before the murders Patricks girlfriend told Steele that he was planning to kill him.
Nicholls also testified that when he picked them up they were both wearing gloves had guns and were also out of breath.
Police recovered a pump action shotgun at Steels address also.
When first presented with the telecom evidence, Steele and Whomes gave no explanation for them. Once all the details were released to the defence suddenly Whomes decided he was in the Wheatsheaf pub more or less down the road from the crime scene at workhouse lane. At the time of the murders.
Whomes never told the police were he was that night. It was only later at trial when the telephone records and cell tower records were disclosed to the defence did this story then emerge.
" 42. The defendants Whomes and Steele gave no explanation of these matters to the police in interview. Much later, after the details of this call were known, and after the cell site evidence had been disclosed - so that they knew when, by whom, to whom and through which cell sites the calls had been made - the defendants gave an explanation for the calls, as we have already set out. The prosecution alleges - and the jury by their verdict found - that the defendants have concocted a story so as to account for these telephone calls. "
Judges summing up -
"The cartridge cases all came from seven 12-bore vantage cartridges with a loading of seven and a half size shot lead shot. Then importantly he examined the firing marks on all of those cartridges microscopically and was satisfied that all seven were fired using the same firearm which he said was almost certainly a pump-action or self-loading 12-bore shotgun."
Darren Nicholls -
"I pulled out in front on a car, Mick asked if I was ok, I said yes I was and as we drove up the road towards turnpike, Mick said they wont fuck us about no more, and Jack said yeah it was quite funny cause when Mick had shot one of them the gun fell apart, he kept asking me if I was ok several times. I realised what happened but not to who, so I said I hope I don’t fall out with you two, Mick said no you wont fall out with us."
8 shots were fired but only 7 cartridges found, all 7 cartridges from the same type of gun. Where was the 8th cartridge? If Micks gun broke apart after he shot one of them, he wont be able to reload it nor would he bother trying. The 8th cartridge remained in Micks weapon that he took from the scene. Once again it can be deduced that Darren Nicholls knows things only the killers would know.

2023.03.30 23:27 Leftylizard9085 I play a game they call "Sleep Points". Every night I hide under my blanket (Part 3).

Part 2 - https://www.reddit.com/nosleep/comments/11ovngn/i_play_a_game_they_call_sleep_points_every_night/
Part 3:
Needless to say, I was tired as hell the next day from having gotten no sleep. I did the same routine as the morning before, waiting for mom to take her shower and then checking my phone. Finally, it had reached 100%. But given how quickly it was draining battery these days, I decided it was probably best to just keep it on the charger. The last thing I wanted was to finally get my phone back, just to find out it had died, and then have to wait however many forevers it would take to regain enough battery to actually be usable again. I checked the app. Since yesterday the number went from 0 to 10, today I was expecting it to have gone from 10 to 20. Sure enough, I was right. Right in the middle of the screen was a big fat “20” and nothing else.
Since I was finally beginning to come to terms with what all was going on, the next few days were relatively uneventful. At least compared to the days that came before. I knew I would have to live with whatever was trying to kill me in my clock. Or else I’d die from it. Probably. I didn’t actually know what would happen. But I was still pretty sure I didn’t wanna find out. But I guess I didn’t know that. After all, maybe the demon was friendly. But they aren’t usually. And the face it was making at me from within the clock didn’t exactly scream “friendly”. So, naturally, I wasn’t really liking my odds and knew it would be common sense to play it safe.
I got into a bit of a routine. Due to what had happened on the second night of dealing with the clock nonsense where I had almost gotten myself killed from having fallen asleep too early, I made a point to stay up until midnight every night to make sure I would be awake when the monster finally came, just to be sure I was putting my whole body under my blanket, including my head, and not moving even the slightest bit. If I was doing the same thing, I would get the same results.
Although, on Thursday, the fourth night, I began to wonder if maybe I should just go to sleep early and risk it. After all, the glaring light from the clock as it approached midnight woke me up once. Maybe it’d do it again if I went to sleep in the same position again, facing the clock. But I just couldn’t bring myself to risk it. I also considered just going to sleep with my blanket over my head, along with the rest of my body. That way, when midnight came I’d still be completely covered by the blanket and I’d block out the glaring light of the clock while I was at it. But at the time I didn’t like that idea either since I remembered being told when I was a kid that going to sleep with my blanket over my head would suffocate me. I guess not enough air was gonna get to my head through the blanket. I now know that that is complete crap, however. Well, mostly crap. It does still technically limit your air, to a certain extent. It’s complicated.
But anyway, at the time I just didn’t wanna risk it. After all, even if I could go to sleep with the blanket over my head (which, again, you absolutely can) what if I moved in my sleep at the exact wrong time, right at midnight? What if that let the monster know I was there? What if that provoked him into attacking me somehow?
And so, I performed that exact ritual, night after night, for the next couple of nights. Something about doing the same thing every night gave me a sense of calm and control over the situation. It made me feel like I knew what I was doing. Like I could come out of this alive. Or at least for the foreseeable future. And every morning, I’d also check the number on the app. It always went up by 10. I always knew what number I was going to see. But just seeing a number go up, as stupid as it sounds, was entertaining and gratifying enough in its own right, for whatever reason.
While I was down in my parent’s room sneaking some phone time, I also got into the habit of checking the live sub count between Pewdiepie and T-Series over on FlareTV. This was back in early 2019, when T-Series hadn't quite passed Pewdiepie yet. Obviously now we know how that all turned out. And at the time we all realistically knew how it was going to turn out anyway. Even if we didn't wanna admit it. But just watching those numbers go up and compete with one another all on its own was mesmerizing to me. Watching one of my favorite YouTubers beat out a whole-ass international corporate entity was truly epic beyond measure.
As I watched the subscriber count though, sometimes I thought to myself what would happen first: T-Series catching up with Pewdiepie or the thing in the clock catching up with me. Though I of course hoped that both of those things were far into the future. Even though I had a sneaking suspicion that neither one really was.
But since I’m still alive to tell you this story, I think you can guess which one happened first. Or at least I’m still alive for a little while longer. Unfortunately, by now I’m running on borrowed time, I suppose you could say. And by the end you’ll know why. But my limited time left on this earth is exactly why I’m writing. After all, isn’t that why we humans do most things that require effort?
On Friday of that first week, I had almost gotten caught. I had actually spent a little too much time watching the T-Series vs. Pewdiepie subscriber count. That and what bits and pieces of Meme Review or LWIAY I could fit in. Plus all kinds of other YouTube bullshit from Mr. Beast or Markiplier or anybody else that I didn’t usually get to watch since one or both of my parents were pretty much always in their room at every other time of day.
I always watched with the sound off and subtitles on since I didn’t wanna risk mom hearing my YouTube videos from her shower, and I didn’t have any earphones or headphones to use instead. The noise of the water hitting the floor should’ve pretty much drowned out any sound from my phone, but since the bathroom and my parents’ room are right across from each other, with only a hallway separating them, the sound still didn’t have very far to travel. It also helped to keep the sound off since I could listen to the sound of the water from her shower and know she was still in there.
But like I said, on Friday I pushed my luck a bit too far. I heard the sound of the water stop and I knew mom’s shower had to have stopped too. I immediately put the phone back where I found it and hoped she wouldn’t notice that the battery had dipped down to 87% when it had been at 100% previously. I figured she’d still need to towel herself off so I had some time to make a break for it. I rushed across the room and opened the door carefully. It had a habit of squeaking just loud enough to be a problem. But I got lucky. It didn’t make a sound. Breakfast was on the table. The moment mom had gotten out of the bathroom, my butt hit the chair and she had no idea I’d been sneaking phone time in her room.
At school, the Valentine’s Day dance was coming up that night. I heard Truman talking to some friends about how he had broken up with his girlfriend, Anastasia Bowman, the day before. Which seemed especially heartless since today was the 15th, which meant the day before was Valentine’s Day itself. At first, I tried to just stay under the radar as usual when around him, but then I realized something: I might actually need his attention for once.
Truman talking about his breakup jogged my memory back to Monday’s detention and how I’d seen the heart with BT and AB in it. Hearing about the breakup also reminded me that he sat in that very same desk every day. Maybe he saw the post-it note. Maybe he looked up the string of characters on the internet too. Maybe he had downloaded the app. Maybe he had answers.
As much as the Valentine’s Day themed decorations that the school had put up over the past week to promote the dance made me wanna puke, I couldn’t focus on that for the rest of the day. I had to be singularly focused on getting Truman’s attention and ask him what he knew about the post-it note. Unfortunately, our paths didn’t really cross very often throughout the day. Obviously he had to swing by my locker in between his third and fourth period. But ever since the backpack incident on Monday, he’d never talked to me since.
What I really needed was to get him alone. The problem was that he was always with his goons wherever he went. They wouldn’t understand at all. They’d have no idea about anything. Truman would have to play dumb just to not look like a fucking lunatic in front of all his lackeys, even if he DID know something useful.
Fortunately, at the end of the school day, just after 7th period, Truman walked alone to the bus without any of his friends since they all took a different class for 7th period from the one that he took, and none of them took the bus since most people lived close enough to the school to just walk. I had my chance. I wouldn’t have another for at least another 3 days. I had to act. I ran up behind him and started tapping him on the shoulder. He immediately turned around and looked pretty pissed off. I guess he must’ve assumed I was trying to pull the ol’ “made ya look” trick by tapping him on the shoulder to try and make him look stupid when he turned around.
I froze. I had no idea what I was going to say. Like “Hey, you wouldn’t happened to have found a completely innocuous post-it note in your desk which, upon further investigation, led to a cell phone app that is impossible to delete and that also miraculously managed to spawn a fucking clock of doom in your bedroom, would you?” My whole situation sounded so stupid. How was I gonna tell someone else about it?
“Um… did you see the post-it note in your desk?” I asked very timidly and lamely
“The fuck are you talking about, Stanley? You leave me some kinda faggy love letter?”, Truman replied.
Sidenote: Stanley is my last name, not my first name. Truman would call everyone by their last name. And everyone called him by his last name in return. My first name is Morgan. Pretty sure I haven’t actually told you guys my name yet. Thought now might be a good time. Anyway, back to my cringey conversation with Truman.
“Well, close, but not exactly. Ya see, I actually didn’t put the note there at all. And it also doesn’t really have words on it, just a bunch of, like, letters and numbers and shit…” I trailed off.
“Quit fucking with me or you’ll be eating your asshole for breakfast tomorrow”. So that was that. I got Truman alone. And even then he still had no idea what the fuck I was talking about. Which sucked. Because who else could I go to for answers? I knew how to survive. But I didn’t want to just survive. I wanted things to just go back to normal. Someone else had to have seen that note. Someone would have to be able to help me out here.
Even though it was Friday afternoon, that didn’t mean anything to me since my dad had made sure that I understood that “one week” meant the weekend too. So I was looking at an absolutely off-the-wall weekend of doing fuck all. So yeah, even more pitiful than a usual weekend for me. But at least come Monday, I wouldn’t need to sneak my phone usage and I could just use it in my room. For once, I was actually looking forward to a Monday.
When I got home, dad still wasn’t home. Mom was home since she only worked part-time, but she was in her room watching TV and talking to some girlfriends from high school on the phone. I was wondering if maybe I could at least watch some TV on the television in our living room.
Yes, I had been grounded from electronics. But TV was still a grey area. It did require electricity, yes, but it wasn’t the sort of thing you would need to charge. And you couldn’t go use the internet on it. Or at least you couldn’t on ours. I guess nowadays on some TVs you can do that, but my parents never had anything like that set up. And it wasn’t a hand-held device like my phone or switch. But then again, my laptop wasn’t hand-held either and that was off limits too. But still, it wasn’t portable.
Either way, I figured it couldn’t hurt to test the boundaries. Dad wasn’t home and mom was distracted in her and dad’s room, so even if TV was off limits, it wasn’t like anyone was gonna catch me for a while. At least not until dad came home. Or until mom left her room to go to the bathroom or something, in which case she could potentially hear the TV from the living room. But even if I did get caught, I could always explain how it wasn’t really clear based on the word “electronics” if TV counted or not.
I usually never watched TV, but since it was the only form of entertainment at my disposal, I enjoyed it way more than I ever did before I got grounded. Usually I’d be on my phone or laptop browsing the internet in my free time. Watching YouTube, checking Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, hell I even still used my Facebook account now and then when I got especially bored. Or if not that, then I’d play some Zelda or Kingdom Hearts games on my Nintendo Switch. So TV was pretty low down there on my list of preferred pass-times. But it’s like they say: “beggars can’t be choosers”.
The closest thing to TV I ever watched were these little snippets from shows on TLC that they upload to YouTube. Shows like 90-day fiancé, My 600-pound life, Dr. Pimple Popper. Just a bunch of garbage TV like that which could, for whatever reason, keep me mildly entertained awhile. So, I spent the next 2 or 3 hours or so watching shows like that on TLC until Dad came home. He immediately turned off the TV after coming home. He asked me why I was watching TV when I knew I was grounded, so I explained how I was only grounded from electronics and I didn’t know TV counted too.
Mom came out from her bedroom to greet dad now that he had come home. Which was good since dad said that I was grounded for another week for watching TV while already grounded, but mom was there to come to my defense and vouch for me. She said she agreed that the word “electronics” doesn’t usually include stuff like TV. Since Mom was on my side, dad gave it up and I was set to be ungrounded the upcoming Monday, just like before. I just couldn’t watch TV until then either.
Soon it was time for dinner, and when dinner was over, I was back to my room with nothing to do but watch the clock turn red and try to kill me. Except that night, something weird had happened: the clock was still the same color as it was during the day. Maybe the thing inside was trying to get me to lower my guard. For the past 4 nights, like literal clockwork, the clock had gotten red, started to glow, the face started to appear, and then by midnight it would break out of the clock and I’d be cowering under the covers like a little bitch, staying totally still, not even breathing. But that wasn’t happening tonight. What the hell was going on?
The monster had to have been up to something. Whether it was trying to lull me into a false sense of security or maybe building up strength for its next attack, I didn’t like where this was all going. 9 o’clock came. No red color. 10 o’clock came. Still no glowing. 11 o’clock came. The face didn’t appear. I had guessed whatever it was had taken the night off. Hey, maybe even horrifying clock demons need some R&R sometimes, right?
Finally, the clock struck midnight. Nothing. Not the slightest change. Was it over? Had the monster moved on to some other clock? Was it just gonna leave me alone now? I figured it was a fat chance. But it didn’t matter. For the first time in days, I had a night without having to stay totally still with my entire body underneath a blanket all without moving the slightest bit just to live to see another day, come midnight. Fuck getting ungrounded. Just having one whole night without having to worry about anymore clock crap was worth way more to me.
On Saturday morning, I still woke up early because of the routine I had gotten into since Monday. So, I was up at 6:30 AM, just like how I usually was when I had school. My parents were still asleep, so I snuck into their room to look at my phone like I had done during the school week. The lights were out and there still wasn’t the slightest hint of sunlight in the sky coming through their windows. It was still February so there usually wouldn’t have been any sunlight until around 8AM during that time of year in my state. Fortunately, mom and dad had left their bedroom door open. So I didn’t have to open it myself and make noise.
My plan was to turn the light on in the hallway between the bathroom and their bedroom. That way, I could give myself some light to work with so that way I didn’t bump into anything or knock anything over, and potentially make noise that would wake my parents up. Then, I would take my phone. After that, maybe, I could sneak it up to my room, watch some YouTube with some actual sound for once, and put it back before they woke up. Though, I wasn’t quite sure if the light from the hallway would wake them up or not.
So I figured that maybe, once I turned on the lights, I’d stay out in the hallway to listen for any sounds of them waking up. And if they did wake up I could just head into the kitchen and act like I was just making myself breakfast or something. Maybe they’d think it a bit suspicious that I was up so early on a Saturday since I usually slept in on weekends. But on the other hand, maybe they’d be pleasantly surprised instead. It could’ve gone either way. But fortunately, once I turned the hallway light on, I didn’t have to worry about any cover story. They were both still asleep. I went over to the nightstand where my charging phone usually was, but it wasn’t there. My dad’s phone was on that charger. I looked at the other nightstand on the other side of their bed where the other charger was. But Mom’s was on that charger.
Since my parents had two charging cables in their room, my phone could usually charge while one of their two phones did too. But because on the previous night they had apparently needed both chargers at once, mine wasn’t on either one. I had to do a bit of slow and silent searching around the bedroom, but I did eventually find it. I guess when dad went to charge his phone, he accidentally knocked mine off, because my phone was at the foot of the bedstand that had the charger his phone was using. I turned it on and even though I’m guessing it would’ve had to have been at 100% by the time my dad had taken it off the charger, its battery had dropped down to 35%. Luckily, I had a charger in my room so I could just charge my phone while watching YouTube Videos.
My mom took showers that would last about 15 minutes. So I thought back to the day before, when I was watching YouTube with the sound off in her room while my phone was on the charger. It started at 100% and ended at 87%. If 13% of the battery was drained while I used it for 15 minutes on the charger, then on the charger in my room I should have had about 40 minutes of battery left. But that was while watching YouTube videos. Maybe if I just looked at Reddit or something, I wouldn’t be draining as much battery.
My first stop was rule34. Ever since my electronics had been taken away, I hadn’t had the opportunity to look at any porn since then, so I knew that, before anything else, I couldn’t waste this opportunity with my phone on anything that I couldn’t jerk off to in case it lost its battery before I got to that. I had never looked at any porn during my mornings in my parents’ room because, number one, I didn’t feel comfortable jerking off in the bed that my parents had probably had sex in plenty of times by that point. And, number two, if I ever was to get caught looking at my phone while grounded, I didn’t want to literally get caught with my pants down.
I spent about 15 or 20 minutes or so on Rule34. Most of that wasn’t jerking off to anything, just looking for something I liked. Once I get going, I can usually finish pretty quickly. The time-consuming part is finding something good. Once I find the right picture, I probably only spend like 2 to 3 minutes at the most. Of course it wasn’t the first time that week I'd played with myself. Since I had pretty much nothing else to do, I had done it plenty of times by then. I just didn’t have anything to look at during all those other times.
I had hoped that, since I wasn’t watching videos, just pictures, I was saving battery. But unfortunately, after I had taken care of myself my phone was down to 18%. So it was still draining battery just as fast. I knew I would have to let it sit and regain battery, however slowly, or else it would die. I pretty much never let my phone die and I didn’t want to start then. It was just something I’d get irrationally anal over. And I would soon find out that that would prove very useful.
The problem was, mom and dad were gonna wake up, and maybe they’d notice that my phone wasn’t in their room anymore. But then again, maybe not. When I found my phone, it had been on the floor. I figured they probably didn’t know exactly where on the floor to check for it, so maybe it wasn’t really a problem after all. But even then. On Monday, Dad was supposed to give me my electronics back. And he wouldn’t be able to do that if my phone wasn’t in his room. I’d still have access to my phone, sure. But he would have to wonder how I managed to get it back if it wasn’t from him. So, at least at some point during that weekend, I’d have to sneak the phone back. That way, when I started using it again after my grounding was over, dad wouldn’t have to wonder where I got it from if he hadn’t given it back to me himself.
My parents got up for the day and didn’t seem to notice that my phone wasn’t in their room anymore. So luckily, I’d at least get to hang onto it until some point on Sunday night. Meaning that my grounding was pretty much unofficially over already. I still didn’t have my laptop or Nintendo Switch. I still didn't know exactly where my parents were keeping those. But if I really wanted to, I could probably do some more snooping around in their room while they were asleep. There would only be so many places for them to have kept them. And besides, I least had my phone. Even if its battery was draining exceptionally fast.
Throughout the day, I started to wonder if I even wanted my phone back. Because of its horrendous battery life, I had to spend like half the day waiting for it recharge. Hopefully my laptop and switch wouldn’t have this problem also. Though I didn’t see any reason for them to. After all, I had downloaded the sleep app on my phone, not my laptop or switch.
I checked the app again. Since I didn’t have to hide from my clock, I was curious to see if the number on the app went up by 10 again. Strangely enough, it had. The number was up to 50. “Maybe I’ll get something when I reach 100”, I had thought to myself. Or maybe, the number on the app had nothing to do with the clock at all. Maybe these had been entirely unrelated things this whole time. Even though I had come to grips with the fact that the monster was real, it still might’ve had nothing to do with my new app. But I found that hard to believe.

2023.03.30 15:07 kittehgoesmeow What A Day: Netanyahu's To Say by Julia Claire & Crooked Media (03/29/23)

"Do you have anything additional you want to say about public urination?" - Rep. Becca Balint (D-VT), valiantly trying but ultimately failing to get Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) back on track during a Congressional hearing.

The Struggle Israel

As the political temperature in Israel continues to rise, the limits of its special relationship with the United States are being tested.
Members of Congress have also begun to meaningfully question the implications of unwavering, unquestioned support for Israel.
This moment should be an inflection point for the United States’ relationship with Israel, but such a diplomatic reckoning has been a long time coming. Israel is currently under control of the most far-right government in its history, led by officials who oppose the two-state solution favored by the Biden administration. The U.S. and Israel have had repeated run-ins over construction of illegal settlements and eliminationist rhetoric, such as when Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called for a Palestinian village to be “erased,” before later saying that there is “no such thing” as Palestinian people at all. That Netanyahu was also bff with disgraced former president Donald Trump during his tenure (and apparently remains so today) has also soured many Democrats and American Jewish organizations on the Israeli government. In the simplest terms: the Biden administration seems to be coming to the realization that the United States cannot purport to be a champion of democracy at home and abroad and continue an unquestioning alliance with a nation squarely headed for dictatorship.

Look No Further Than Crooked Media

The Crooked Store’s new collection is all about the fight to codify Roe v. Wade. We thought about getting “codify Roe” tattooed on our faces, but t-shirts just made more sense. Codifying Roe means passing legislation that protects the right to abortion in all 50 states. We can’t rely on the courts to uphold reproductive rights, so we’re turning to our legislators, and the Crooked Store has everything you need to spread the word. The collection includes water bottles, stickers, and unisex tees, because it’s on all of us to get the message out there.

Under The Radar

The Senate approved legislation on Wednesday to repeal the 1991 and 2002 authorizations for American wars in Iraq. The decisive 66-30 vote is a historic step towards formally acknowledging the catastrophic failure of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, which killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and thousands of Americans. If you can believe it, all of the votes against the repeal came from Senate Republicans. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell issued a statement saying he opposes the repeal of the Authorizations for Use of Military Force because of “threats we face today in Iraq and Syria from Iran-backed terrorists.” The implicit and at times explicit fearmongering from McConnell and his war-hawk GOP colleagues is that repealing these authorizations will project “American weakness,” by contrast to two decades of failed wars based on lies, the ultimate sign of strength. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) issued a statement saying that the repeal “is an important step to prevent any president from abusing these AUMFs, reaffirm our partnership with the Iraqi government, and pay tribute to the servicemembers who served in Iraq.” Kaine and other senators have pushed to repeal the AUMFs for years in an effort to return war powers to Congress, where the Constitution envisions them.

What Else?

The Manhattan grand jury investigating Donald Trump’s “alleged” hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels will break for a month. Sure thing, guys. Take your time.

After banning nearly all abortions last year, Idaho will soon become the first state to prohibit minors from interstate travel for the procedure, which Republicans have begun referring to as “abortion trafficking.”
Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz continued to deny allegations of union busting in front of a Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee hearing, where Chairman Bernie Sanders (pretty accurately!!) accused Starbucks of waging “the most aggressive and illegal union busting campaign in the modern history of our country.”
The GOP-controlled North Carolina state legislature overrode Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of a bill eliminating permit requirements to buy a handgun in the state.
Twitter temporarily suspended Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) Tuesday after she repeatedly posted references to a “Trans Day of Vengeance” organized by “Antifa.” Not for nothing, but considering how heavily the community has been persecuted in this country, a “Trans Day of Vengeance” sounds like a really good time, Marjorie. Thanks for the idea!
Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) will return to the Senate the week of April 17 following the completion of his treatment for depression at Walter Reed Medical Center.
Correction: Yesterday I misattributed Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green as (R-CO) instead of (R-GA), conflating her designation with that of Rep. Lauren Boebert (actually R-CO). My apologies to the good people of Colorado, who clearly already have their hands full.

You Gotta Be Fucking Kidding Me

The Kentucky state legislature has passed a sweeping bill banning gender-affirming health care for trans minors, restricting which bathrooms and lockers they can use, prohibiting discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools, and allowing teachers to use the names and pronouns assigned to trans minors at birth against their wishes. The passage overrides the veto of Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY) and is firmly opposed by state medical associations, education officials, and parents of trans children. State-Sen. Max Wise (R-KY) introduced the hotly-contested legislation, and defended it by saying that its goal is to “strengthen parental engagement and communication in children’s education while protecting the safety of our children.” State-Sen. Karen Berg (D-KY) rightly called this for the crock of shit that it is, saying, “To say this is a bill protecting children is completely disingenuous. And to call this a parents’ right bill is an absolutely despicable affront to me personally.” Berg’s own trans son killed himself just weeks before the bill was introduced.

Drecking In

Time once again to check in with disgraced former president and current 2024 candidate Donald Trump.
The tensions over what to do about this criminal who wants to be president again will only get worse as we move deeper into the 2024 election season.
Donald Trump’s myriad crimes are of inescapable political interest, because he’s running for president again. It’s up to the Justice Department to demonstrate that running for president again won’t protect him or anyone else from accountability for breaking the law.

Under The Radar

A Michigan man allegedly threatened on social media to kill Jewish members of the Michigan government, and state Attorney General Dana Nessel (D-MI) says she was among those targeted. On February 18, the FBI National Threat Operations Center told the Detroit FBI branch that someone on Twitter with the username “tempered_reason” (these fucking assholes) said he was heading to Michigan and “threatening to carry out the punishment of death to anyone that is Jewish in the Michigan govt.” He went on to threaten that any attempt to “subdue” him would be “met with deadly force in self-defense.” The username was traced back to a man named Jack Eugene Carpenter III, a resident of Tipton, MI, who already had a proactive order against him and had previously been arrested by state police. He appears to have been a former employee of the University of Michigan. Carpenter has been charged with transmitting an interstate threat (he was in Texas when he sent the tweets), for which he could receive up to five years in federal prison, and is currently being held without bail in a federal court in Detroit.

What Else?

President Biden said he will sign a GOP-led resolution blocking the District of Columbia’s major revision of its century-old criminal code if it passes through Congress, but claims he still maintains he supports DC statehood and home rule. Not great, Joe!
The United States is broaching talks with its close international allies about the possibility of imposing new sanctions on China if Beijing provides military support to Russia’s war on Ukraine.
Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) will join the University of Virginia as a professor after losing her primary to a Trump-backed challenger.
Patrick Wojahn, the mayor of College Park, MD, was arrested on 56 counts of possession and distribution of child sexual abuse videos.
Republican lawmakers in Kentucky advanced a bill aimed at putting limits on drag shows.
Britain’s domestic intelligence agency MI5 didn’t act swiftly enough on key information and missed a significant opportunity to prevent the suicide bombing that killed 22 people at a 2017 Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England.
Twitter briefly suspended the personal account of Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) after the Republican congressman appeared to have threatened the prime minister of Japan over a detained United States Navy serviceman. Good, normal stuff, Mike! Keep it up!
A network of political nonprofits formed by hyper-conservative judicial activist Leonard Leo moved at least $43 million to a new firm he’s leading. Last August, Leo received a $1.6 billion windfall from a single donor, likely the largest political gift in history.
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) says he won’t “mess with Social Security,” as everyone with eyes blasts him over past support for privatization. No one believes you, my guy!
After exaggeratedly feigning care for the average working American in the wake of the East Palestine, OH, train derailment and torching President Biden with accusations that he doesn’t, Republicans are now, of course, saying they don’t support the introduction of “burdensome regulations” for the rail industry, which is exactly how we fucking got here.

Be Smarter

It’s been a…turbulent year for air travel (I hate myself). A new criminal complaint from the FBI reports that a 40-year-old man was arrested this week on federal charges after he checked a suitcase containing an explosive for a flight to Florida at a Pennsylvania airport. The man who tried to check the explosive was Marc Muffley from Lansford, PA, and he was headed from Lehigh Valley International Airport to Orlando when he was flagged by an alarm during his TSA screening. The FBI determined that the explosive was a “circular compound” with fuses attached inside the suitcase. Security camera footage confirms that Muffley left the airport five minutes after being asked to report to the security desk and was arrested late Monday night. The immediate area of the airport was evacuated “out of an abundance of caution.” On Wednesday, Lufthansa Flight 469 from Austin, TX, to Frankfurt, Germany was diverted to Dulles International Airport near Washington after encountering turbulence so severe that seven passengers were taken to hospitals. The plane dropped almost 4,000 feet during the turbulence. Happy travels everyone!

ConocoPhillips is planning this massive oil drilling project in the Western Arctic, and the Biden administration has less than 30 days to finalize its decision to grant or deny permits to ConocoPhillips. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has officially called for an end to Daylight Savings, saying the semi-annual shift is detrimental to sleep health. Finally, some real allies.

Stock futures climb on Friday as S&P 500 tries to snap 3-week losing streak: Live updates

U.S. stock futures rose Friday as investors pondered the Federal Reserve’s rate-hiking path in light of fresh commentary from central bank speakers.

Stock futures climb on Friday as S&P 500 tries to snap 3-week losing streak: Live updates

U.S. stock futures rose Friday as investors pondered the Federal Reserve’s rate-hiking path in light of fresh commentary from central bank speakers.
Nasdaq-100 futures were up 0.3%, and S&P 500 futures advanced 0.2%. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were up 33 points.
Those moves come as U.S. Treasury yields retreated. The benchmark 10-year yield fell more than 6 basis points to 4%. The 2-year rate dipped to 4.855%.
The major averages are on their way to a positive week. The S&P 500 is up 0.28%, on pace to snap a three-week decline, while the Nasdaq has a 0.6% gain. The Dow is also up 0.6% on the week.
The Dow on Thursday had its best day since Feb. 13, closing 1.1% higher. The S&P 500 rose 0.8%, and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.7%. These gains came after Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said that he thinks the central bank can keep its interest rate hikes to 25 basis points rather than the half-point increase favored by some other officials.
However, Fed Governor Christopher J. Waller struck a tougher tone in his comments to the Mid-Size Bank Coalition of America, raising the possibility of a higher terminal rate if inflation numbers don’t cool.
He referred to January’s big payrolls report, which showed the economy added 517,000 jobs, as well as the latest reading from the consumer price index and personal consumption expenditures reports.
“If those data reports continue to come in too hot, the policy target range will have to be raised this year even more to ensure that we do not lose the momentum that was in place before the data for January were released,” Waller said.
The road ahead is a tough one for the central bank, regardless of the messaging they’re relaying to the public.
“No matter how slow the Fed goes, no matter how much they ‘communicate’ what they want to do, there is no avoiding the potholes of reversing extraordinary easing,” Bleakley chief investment officer Peter Boockvar wrote in a note.
“When markets and the economy have been addicted and medicated for so long on low rates and QE, there will never be the right time to ease up,” he said.
On the economic data front, the Institute of Supply Management is due to release its Non-Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) report on Friday morning. Investors will also listen for further commentary from central bank officials, including Fed Governor Michelle Bowman and Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin.

2023.01.11 21:53 bitemy As of 2015, as many as 4.6 million U.S. children lived in homes with at least one loaded, unlocked firearm.

Excerpt from the Washington Post By John Woodrow Cox, Steve Hendrix, Steven Rich
The prosecutor sat at a small table across from a 6-year-old boy, watching him color. The kid smiled, showing off the gaps from the front teeth he had just lost. He said he was expecting a visit from the tooth fairy soon.
Two months had passed since the child had shot and killed his first-grade classmate.
Art Busch, the prosecutor, was still grappling with what had happened at Buell Elementary outside Flint, Mich., on Feb. 29, 2000. The boy had approached a girl in his class, then raised a gun and shot her in the chest. Kayla Rolland, who was also 6, died soon after.
Busch knew from the beginning that the boy was too young to be charged with any crime, but he wanted to understand if a child that age could grasp what he had done. So the prosecutor decided to visit the boy at his temporary home, a center for abused and neglected children in Flint. The boy told Busch about his favorite plush toys and said he was excited to meet the Easter Bunny. He said he liked where he was living. The people who worked there read books to him.
The prosecutor left that day, convinced.
“This kid’s a baby,” Busch recalled thinking. “He doesn’t have the ability to form an intent to commit murder.”
His memories of the case rushed back to him Friday afternoon, when he heard about a 6-year-old boy in Virginia who, according to police, had shot his teacher — on purpose.
America grew accustomed to school shootings long ago, but the one at Richneck Elementary in Newport News elicited a different sort of horror. All weekend, people throughout the community, and far beyond, struggled to process the news. How, they wondered, could a child just old enough to tie his shoes and add up numbers commit such a violent act?
On Monday, at a news conference where investigators announced the gun had belonged to the boy’s mother, both the schools superintendent and police chief described the shooting as “unprecedented.”
But in this country, almost no form of gun violence is unique. Since 1999, most shootings at K-12 campuses — 69 percent — happened at high schools, according to an analysis by The Washington Post. Among the 62 at elementary schools, 49 were committed by adults or teens. In at least 11 cases, though, the person who pulled the trigger was no older than 10.
In nine of those shootings, children brought the loaded guns from home. In the other two, the children fired weapons police brought to campus.
Most of the shootings were unintentional.
In Houston, a 6-year-old boy found a .380-caliber handgun on the floor of a home where he was staying, took the weapon to school and accidentally fired it in the cafeteria, wounding himself and two other children. In Chicago, an 8-year-old boy brought a gun he had found under his mother’s bed, and when it went off in his backpack, the round nicked a 7-year-old’s stomach. In California, a child younger than 11 spotted an AR-15 mounted to the side of a police motorcycle — at the school that day as part of a safety presentation — and he squeezed the trigger, wounding three students.
The lone case that directly compares to the shooting in Virginia was the one in Michigan, 23 years ago.
Dedric Owens listens to Genesee County prosecutor Arthur A. Busch during a neglect hearing after his 6-year-old son shot and killed first-grade classmate Kayla Rolland at Buell Elementary. (Steve Jessmore/Bpn) Within hours of Kayla’s death, Busch recalled, his focus turned to how a first-grader could have gotten a loaded gun in the first place.
Investigators soon learned that the .32-caliber semiautomatic had been stored in a shoe box, along with chocolate candies, at what they described as a drug house where the boy often stayed. He had played with it before, Busch said, twirling it on his finger like a revolver from the Old West.
The 19-year-old man accused of owning the weapon later pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter and served over two years behind bars.
The boy had been chronically neglected, Busch said, but even after he was taken from his parents and placed into foster care, some people wanted him punished, an irrational desire that the former prosecutor worried could surface in Newport News.
Police reviewing the Richneck Elementary shooting haven’t released any information on the boy’s home life or what might have precipitated the attack on his teacher, who survived a bullet wound to her chest.
“You have two victims in these kinds of cases,” Busch said. “You have the child who’s been victimized by somebody else, to the point that they can’t keep them safe.”
Natalie Poss, a retired teacher in Washington state, reached the same conclusion after one of her third-graders accidentally shot another a decade ago.
It was the end of a short February day at Armin Jahr Elementary in Bremerton, an hour west of Seattle across Puget Sound, and Poss was giving cookies to the students who had their coats and backpacks ready. As usual, a soft-spoken 8-year-old named Amina Kocer-Bowman was the first to comply.
Later, other kids in the room would describe a boy slamming his backpack on a desk. Poss heard a loud bang, and when she turned around, Amina had slumped to the floor.
Rushing over, Poss saw a trickle of red coming from Amina’s sleeve.
“Leave the classroom,” she ordered the other students. “Get help for Amina.”
When she opened the girl’s coat, blood gushed from the child’s side, saturating her clothes. A hollow-point bullet had passed through her elbow and into her midsection. Talking constantly to Amina, she pressed her palm against the hole.
The teacher never let up on the wound or the calming words to her student. Only when the paramedics arrived to take her place did Poss stand up and soon began to shake.
She rode with Amina in the ambulance and stayed with her through much of the terror of the trauma center. But first, as the medics worked on the girl, she began opening backpacks with her bloodied hands.
In one, with a hole blown through the bottom, she found a Heckler & Koch .45. She was stunned to see the name of an unassuming 9-year-old boy written on the bag.
“He was never on my radar as one that would bring a gun to school,” Poss said.
Amina recovered, after multiple surgeries and months in the hospital.
Her family moved away, but Poss, now 66, remained in touch. She saw her graduate from high school, that hollow-point still lodged near her spine.
The students never returned to that classroom, where so much of Amina’s blood had poured out they had to replace the carpet.
The boy with the gun never returned to the school at all. He was arrested, held on $50,000 bond, and charged in juvenile court with assault and unlawful possession of a firearm. Wearing an orange jumpsuit, he tearfully told a judge he had trouble reading the documents. A year later, the charges were dismissed after the boy complied with court directives to get counseling and write a letter of apology.
“I’m sorry I hurt you because I brought a gun to school,” he wrote to Amina. “I wish you were out of the hospital playing basketball and going back to school.”
The charges against him infuriated Poss, who argued that his parents were entirely to blame.
He had taken the gun, which belonged to his mother’s boyfriend, from a glove compartment. The mother and boyfriend were charged with unlawful possession and felony 3rd degree assault. They pleaded to lesser charges, and the mother was sentenced to 14 months in prison.
“Who leaves a loaded a .45 laying around?” Poss asked.
Lots of people, as it turns out. As of 2015, as many as 4.6 million children lived in homes with at least one loaded, unlocked firearm. According to the Giffords Law Center, 23 states and the District have passed legislation requiring people to secure their firearms, though the regulations vary widely, as does the enforcement of them.
Among the cases in which children brought guns from home to their elementary school, and someone fired them, a Post analysis found that prosecutors declined to file charges against an adult only once. In Newport News, authorities say they have yet to decide what to do, citing the ongoing investigation.
“I don’t understand how a 6-7 year old [could] do that,” Gracie wrote. “but then again gage.”
“I know,” LeBleu replied, “it’s sad.”
Gage Meche is LeBleu’s son, and one day six years ago, a gun slipped out of

“Specialist Barnabas! There’s a guest here to see you!” Linda’s desk speaker chimes out as she activates it.
“... I’m at least mildly paranoid as well. This is too soon for... well...” Linda says and Chenk nods as all three of them head to the front. There’s a synthetic man in a very much off the shelf body. Not an expensive one either. No real face, no moving mouth parts no... nothing beyond basic shape and articulation. He is in an Undaunted uniform, but those can be faked. Even calling the entity a he is a bit of a stretch. It simply has no sexual characteristics. It very much has the sensation of a practice or extremely cheap synthetic body.
“Specialist Barnabas! Good to see you. Also as I’m sure you’ll be glad to know we’re learning from this case. We have retrieved some information and are passing it to you to do what you want with it.” The synthetic Undaunted says.
“So what is this?” Chenk asks as he takes the packet the man offers him and gesturing to the synthetic body.
“Remote body work. This is just a training platform. Getting used to a body’s feedback loops and such. It’s possible for drone starships and drone projections into hostile territory to get work done.”
“Kind of makes the physical training seem a little redundant.” Chenk mocks him and the prosthetic body tries to smack him with a pair of fingers and it’s deflected. The man then tries again and again and again before Chenk get’s distracted grinning at him and receives a light punch in the chest.
“There’s more than just building muscle in those exercises.” The Soldier replies and Chenk nods.
“Fair enough, reflexes and balance are important. Still... how’s the feedback from that thing?”
“It’s okay. Weird though, I can see why it’s not popular. Better than Axiom puppeteering a genejack though. That shit is clumsy, uncomfortable and leaves you feeling dirty even when you do everything right.” The Soldier states.
“I’ll take your word for it... who the hell am I talking to anyways?” Chenk asks and the prosthetic body holds up a pair of fingers moves them in a circle then quickly jerks them apart. Chenk swats it on the head as he chuckles.
“And fuck you again for that smartass.” He says and the prosthetic chuckles.
“Oh by the way we have another thing to test. But you need to hold onto it until we send a runner to pick it up.”
“What is it?” Chenk asks and the prosthetic pulls out a strange communicator. It’s even chunkier than the extra resilient ones The Undaunted use. It’s about the size of a brick. “And that is?”
“Will you be taking command of this item after I have used it?” The Soldier asks.
“Yes Lazlo, I will. Now what is it?” Chenk asks.
“I told you, it’s Las. Anyways. It does this.” Lazlo says holding the device over his head. It opens up and he lets go of it. It absorbs him as it falls to the floor and clatters there before snapping shut. Chenk blinks and picks up the device. It’s screen lights up and confirms that the transfer was complete.
His communicator goes off and he puts it on speaker. “I really hope this is Lazlo with an explanation on speaker.”
“Laz, for the love of god man. Call me Laz.”
“You’re going to have to make me.” Chenk replies.
“That can be arranged. You still have the particle transfer box?” Lazlo asks and Chenk chuckles.
“Yes. Is there a reason this isn’t used with flesh?”
“It’s kind of like the Star Trek transporters in that it rips things apart at the atomic level then pastes it back together on the other side. It’s legally murder to transport a person this way. But a remote piloted drone? Hold that sucker out.”
Chenk does so and the device pops open again. He points the opening away from himself. What emerges this time isn’t a little off the shelf drone but a massive combat form that resembles a terminator crossbred with a suit of power armour. As it turns it finds a plasma pistol shoved right into its optical sensors.
“Oh relax. The drone is big and scary but unarmed. This is just to show you that with this new toy we can project all sorts of combat robotics all over.” Lazlo says.
“Dude, I understand that we’re testing all sorts of new toys all hours of the day. I’ve got some myself, and as hypocritical as this sounds, this is not the place for that. We have injured officers, a criminal mastermind outright fucking with us and more people are being shifted on and off the case as The Shroud makes this more and more personal to more and more of us.” Chenk says as he holsters the plasma pistol. Lazlo’s prosthetic head moves around and scans the nearby area. Counting the dozens of sidearms and full on rifles being put away. Most are non-lethal, but not all of them.
“Fair point, but you see the advantage right? We just need to miniaturize these things a bit, or even incorporate them into the drones and we’ve got a way to rapidly project power without risking soldiers.” Lazlo states and Chenk nods.
“Yes, but try not to do it in the middle of a jumpy police station.” Chenk says and while Lazlo doesn’t have facial expressions to look contrite, he still has enough body language to do so. “Is there any way that that thing looks like anything other than...”
Lazlo taps something on his neck and a hologram shuffles over the robotic face to show a blocky face with thick mutton chops and a heavy moustache. A tap on the shoulder and he looks like he’s wearing a wool coat frock and suit. He’s clearly still a robot but he looks like...
“Are you seriously ripping off that Sherlock Holms sci-fi cartoon?” Chenk demands in a deadpan.
“Maybe.” Lazlo responds.
“How’s the tactical feedback on your prosthetic?”
“Fairly good.”
“Good.” Chenk replies before MOVING and smacking the robot in the back of the head with a hollow ringing sound. “Dumbass!”
“Coming from the man that just damn near broke his damn hand?” Lazlo asks in a slightly stunned tone. “How stupid are you?”
“Well I could have used Axiom and ripped the robot head off. But I wanted to see if I could smack some sense into you remotely.” Chenk remarks.
“Oh my god...” Lazlo says covering his holographic face with a still clearly reinforced robotic hand.
“Do weird things like this happen regularly on The Dauntless?” One of the officers asks.
“Oh this doesn’t even come close to weird. We’ve been keeping non-humans well away from certain parts of the ship because dear GOD. Things would get bad.”
“The last food fight was amazing.” Lazlo remarks as he chuckles.
“It also would have been lethal for most races to be within thirty metres of that mess hall. Especially after some of the things got aerosolized.”
“The Admiral was so mad...” Lazlo says with further chuckles.
“Alright, so you’ve shown off the new toy and offered some evidence. Are you hanging out still due to inertia or...?”
“I’m also here to answer any questions had. I’ve been fully briefed on the bit I’ve brought you.” Lazlo says. “Also I’m still testing out this system. It’s working great, but if it breaks down I’ll just call via communicator.”
“If we didn’t have regenerative comas returning injured soldiers to full working order this would be a great way to get them back on the field.” Chenk notes.
“Among other things. Anyways, are you going to crack the evidence?”
“I’m too close to the case now. So no, I’m turning it over to The Chief instead.”
“Thank you.” Chief Bowman says reaching for the package and taking it. She opens it up. “Two data chips and a hand written report. Get this down to the lab and give me a write up of its contents ten minutes ago ladies.”
At her command an assistant take the folder and rushes off. She puts her hands in her pockets and looks UP to gauge Lazlo’s face. “Do you humans enjoy causing problems?”
“Let’s be fair, the problem is the lunatic playing games with the lives of others. Humans are complicated, but we’re not trying to make things worse. Usually.” Chenk justifies.
“I’m sure. All right, humans and associated lunatics in my office please. Let’s sort the mess.” She says and Chenk is the first to follow her with Linda right next to him and a casual Vera being in the middle as Lazlo is in the rear, taking in the sights of the station for his first visit.
Chief Bowman’s expression is grim as she enter the office and gets into her chair. A press of the button on her desk has a bit of baffling technology kick off and it does nothing to Lazlo’s control of his drone. Which means that in all likelyhood some Protn has been used in its construction. Or at least in its control method. “Okay humans. No nonsense, no double-speak. How much are you interfering with this investigation? And how much danger is this going to put my girls in?”
“Nothing from me. I’ve declined to report as the ongoing situation is still evolving and any information I give would be immediately proven inaccurate by the time I finish giving it.” Chenk says and Bowman turns her gaze right onto Lazlo. The man is hundreds of kilometres away and behind numerous bulkheads and he still leans back a little at that gaze.
“Are you even IN a position to lean back?”
“No and that’s what has me confused. I’m lying on a couch that’s basically a set of cushions on a big computer core with a bit of protn to transfer everything.” Lazlo remarks as he shuffles a bit uncomfortably and settles himself. “Our own investigations are currently observation and hands off. We haven’t broke any laws, at least, we haven’t until someone notices the spies everywhere and makes a stalking accusation. Then we’re in some trouble.”
“Alright. So if it’s something that was retrieved without hacking, invasion of privacy or breaking and entering... or coercion, or the planting of evidence... or a threat of violence... or....”
“It’s just observation so far. Access to company records retrieved by formal request and observations from a public place to a public place with civilian grade equipment. We haven’t spoken to or even been seen by any of the people involved.” Lazlo insists.
“Alright, and formally you are?”
“I am Operative and Engineer Lazlo ‘Laz’ Cunningham. I work in The Intelligence Division of The Undaunted as an Equipment Operator and Data Analyst. This is a new piece of technology we’re toying with and information we have retrieved with, admittedly dubious, but entirely legal means.”
“Equipment Operator and Data Analyst?” Chief Bowman asks.
“I mostly spend my days reading through files, thanking god for PT and training to break the monotony and if I get lucky I get to operate some camera drones. I may be technically a spy and a super soldier, but I got some of the boring jobs.” Lazlo admits and Chief Bowman snorts in amusement.
“Charm off Double Oh Tinhead. She’s married.” Chenk remarks in a completely deadpan tone and Vera snorts in amusement.
“Alright, enough of the stupid competitions humans. I want a summation of the information I’ve given to my analyst from you and any personal notes you may have about it.”
“Certainly. In summation the hostile known as The Shroud has proven to have political ambitions across a minimum of twenty two spires. We suspect more, if not now then later. We gained this observation by noting which politicians got calls on unusual hours before or after a potential Shroud Event. We found a fairly wide pattern and in a full fifth of them we have images taken from public security cameras that verify a figure wearing The Shroud’s signature black hoodie was making the call from a public terminal. Often times with a basic, off the shelf prosthetic body wearing it, but sometimes it would be a young woman reading off instructions from a dataslate. The woven web is impressive even if we only count those we have a confirmed Shroud Contact with. Those with suspected contact triples the size.”
“How far back have you traced the existence of The Shroud?”
“We’ve found evidence going back at least ten years, if not considerably longer. Their actions have grown bolder, more numerous and far more aggressive the more time has passed. Effectively their activity has outright doubled or tripled each year. They’ve only now reached the point where they’re really active. Some of our analysts think that the previous years were testing the waters and developing a signature. Now they have a very firm grasp on things, and a string of political favours long enough to either cause a great deal of chaos or a huge amount of backlash if and when they reveal their hand.”
“So you’re just confirming what we already know and letting us see that this is both bigger and longer.”
“I’m not surprised The Shroud has been under the radar before now. Their initial actions were very low case and not the sort of thing that grabs attention. We don’t even have confirmation that The Shroud Events were actually caused by The Shroud at the time and they weren’t just claiming credit for someone else’s actions.”
“Either way, they were claiming credit which makes them accountable. Ten years of this?”
“It’s only in the past few months that they’ve stepped up their movements and began tightening their grip. It used to be one or two events a month on very different spires to spread out the details and sightings. Now? It’s like they stopped caring.”
“Meaning something caused a change in pattern to embolden them. But what?”
“It began shortly after we Undaunted showed up. So we may have some responsibility here.”
“I see... now where they inspired, or is this a confession?”
“Inspired.”
“I know that, we have evidence going back before your people left cruel space.”
“I was just being clear.” Lazlo says.
“As was I.” Chief Bowman replies.

2022.11.21 20:34 blindfoldeddriver Super sources will power the 'smartest map on the planet.' But what are they?

TL;DR: Super sources are location data sources that offer a high level of accuracy in a cost-effective manner compared to traditional data gathering methods, like using mobile mapping cars. They come in a variety of forms, including observations from automotive OEMS, vehicles, connected sensors, partners and open-source projects, like OpenStreetMap (OSM). But the goal is always the same: to bring more data together, to create a more detailed and accurate map.

---
Earlier this month, TomTom lifted the lid on its game-changing approach to build a new mapping and geolocation data ecosystem, the TomTom Maps Platform. Data will be key to its success, and while the company already has more than 30 years’ worth of global location data, it’s not resting on its laurels. The Dutch mapmaker is instead taking data sourcing to new heights with what it calls “super sources.” But what are they?
“Data,” Mike Harrell, VP of Software Engineering TomTom Maps, says. “It’s all about the data.”
Whether you’re making a simple map to show where your restaurant is or a high-definition map for an automated vehicle, you need data. Naturally, the more complex the use case, the more detail and accuracy you’ll need. Equally, the more data you have access to, the more opportunity you have to innovate.

“The future of mapmaking is a wide-open field. I think it is anything we want to let it be. The construct of what we have now is sound. But I think the more [data] we are adding to it and the more alive we’re making it, the better the end results. Jonathan Houston, General Manager Commercial, MapIT
Today, location data is used in more business models, applications and in more innovative ways than ever: from geotagging social media posts, to routing food delivery drivers, to informing insurance calculations, to ensuring your bank cards aren’t being misused, to suggesting what the default language on your devices should be.
This vast variety of use cases is placing “insatiable demand” on the kind of technology TomTom develops, Harold Goddijn, TomTom CEO, said at the company’s recent investor event.
For a world reliant on location data, developers and engineers need the best, most detailed map possible. The “smartest map on the planet,” as TomTom puts it.
But to begin building that, the company requires data, lots of data. The good part is that there is no shortage of data out in the world. “Location data is everywhere, and it can never be decoupled from our lives,” says Gaby Grillo, Product Marketing Manager, TomTom Digital Cockpit. Harrell is much more direct, “It’s a tsunami of data,” he says.
The difficult part is bringing it all together and making sense of it. This is the fundamental challenge TomTom faces every day. As Tara Goddard, Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University, puts it, “How do you find the signal in the noise?”

TomTom's new mapping platform and ecosystem

TomTom’s new platform is designed to do just that. It will absorb more data, from more sources, at a greater rate and with greater accuracy than what’s currently available on the market. All with the goal of building a smarter, more useful map.

“Our new TomTom Maps Platform goes far beyond what we have been able to do so far. Building the maps the world needs requires collaboration and the pooling of resources. Harold Goddijn, TomTom CEO
“It’s good to have a lot of sources. To make a fresh, useful map you need a variety of information feeding it into the system,” Laurens Feenstra, VP of Product Management TomTom Maps explains.
For this, TomTom is taking conventional data sourcing a step further through what it calls super sources. Eric Bowman, TomTom Chief Technology Officer, explains that super sources are location data sources that offer a high level of accuracy in a cost-effective manner compared to traditional data gathering methods, like using mobile mapping (MoMa) cars.
In the early days of digital mapping, mapmakers had to drive MoMa cars on every single road to collect the data to build maps. Even though these were time-consuming, expensive and slow to operate, they were the only way to get the quality of data needed to make a map.
Super sources, though, take data sourcing to another level. Rather than having to undertake the expensive task of going out into the world to collect data, with super sources, the data flows directly to TomTom.
Super sources come in a variety of forms, including observations from automotive OEMS, vehicles, connected sensors, partners and open-source projects, like OpenStreetMap (OSM). But the goal is always the same: to bring more data together, to create a more detailed and accurate map.
With better maps, location-tech companies can increase their efficiency. They can save time, money and resources, all of which contribute to improving the experience for their users.
One of the most appealing data sources TomTom is using to make its new map are sensor derived observations or SDOs for short.

Sensor-derived observations: A mountain of useful data

As the name suggests, SDOs are data observations about the world that are gathered by sensors. In this case, TomTom refers to sensors on vehicles, such as cars and trucks.
Kris Kobylinski, Director Product Management, tells me that TomTom collects more than 2 billion observations from vehicle sensors each year, and we’re only just scratching the surface of what’s possible with them.
The average car on U.S. roads is more than 12 years old, according to figures cited by Kelley’s Blue Book. As a result, the majority of cars on the road today are equipped with only basic sensor arrays (or none at all). However, more than 90% of new cars sold come with advanced sensors, including some form of location-relaying device. Within the next decade or so, we can expect nearly every car on the road to feature a more advanced sensor array.
As more vehicles come equipped with sensors and data-capture systems, the number of possible sensor observations gathered each year is going to erupt and bring with it a waterfall of potential opportunities for mapmakers. Where SDOs now provide a steady trickle of input, they will go on to supply a torrent of mapmaking data. With its new platform, TomTom is readying to make the use of this data like no other.

The first type of sensor-derived observations

Essentially, SDOs gather three different characteristics about our roads, Kobylinski says. They capture vehicle trajectory, basic lane geometry and road signs with a value, which could be speed limits, stop signs or weight restrictions.
TomTom has been using vehicle trajectory (aka, GPS trace data) to inform changes to its map for a couple of decades now, since the days of the personal navigation device (PND), in fact. This trace data — which shows the location of a vehicle in time — can, in crude terms, be considered the first type of SDO.
GPS trace lines are a simple data point but offer powerful potential. So much so, that with them, according to Steve Coast, Founder of OSM, “You could redraw a map of much of the world every day.” Or even every hour in some busy places.
Trace data from highly accurate GPS systems, coupled with something called dead reckoning (read more about that here), make it easy to calculate where roads are and what the direction of traffic is, spot patterns of congestion, understand speed profiles, and monitor for infrastructure changes and road closures. For a company like TomTom, remapping an entire road network is an elementary task.
Today, there are many more sensors on vehicles, such as cameras, rain sensors, light sensors and forms of radar. With a little interpretation, data from these sensors can be ingested, turned into useful information and applied to the map.
A common use of SDOs today is street sign recognition, Kobylinski explains. Sign recognition cameras are capturing millions of street signs every day, all over the world. It’s one of the technologies that helps make things like Intelligent Speed Assistants possible. Using this kind of sensor data, TomTom can identify speed limit signs and keep its speed limit data up to date in real time.
While each vehicle only captures one instance of a sign, by combining every observation, the mapmaker can know, with a high level of certainty, what the sign is. Comparing this data against TomTom’s 30 years of historical data and MoMa vehicle data, the company can verify if the sign is new, if it’s changed or even if it dissapears.

The future of SDOs

With more complex sensor arrays, in future, every vehicle will be a sort of MoMa car, Harrell says. Cars will be filled with all kinds of sensors and computers and this could have a powerful and broad-reaching ability to inform updates to TomTom’s map, Harrell adds. It will allow mapmakers to go beyond lane geometry, vehicle trajectory and sign recognition.
Think about a vehicle with advanced sensors such as radar, high-resolution stereo cameras and even LiDAR (light detection and ranging, a form of range detection system that uses lasers). The observational potential of these sensors is massive compared to a single street sign recognition camera. These sensors can more accurately map the widths of lanes on a highway, they could identify road markings and the types of vehicles on the road. They could even map objects by the side of the road, such as fire hydrants, benches, building entry points and dropped curbs used for disabled access.
We’ve come a long way from the lone MoMa car slowly traveling the world for data. In future, every car in the world will collect data around the clock and beam it back to TomTom to sift through so it can update its map in real time. It’s one of the most powerful tools the company has in its mission to make the world’s smartest map and it’s on a trajectory to only get better.
Indeed, it’s certainly a key differentiator against some of the world’s other global mapmakers who don’t have access to the same combination of SDO data, MoMa data and historical insight that TomTom does.

Community and partners: Collaborative mapmaking is the future

While data is undeniably important to TomTom’s maps, so is collaboration.
Traditionally, when TomTom talks about its community and partners, it’s referring to people, individuals or organizations that suggest map edits, make changes to the map directly or provide data to inform map updates. These range from drivers highlighting when something’s not right on the road through their PND or navigation app, to partners, like ride-hailing and logistics companies, tracking issues with the map and presenting those to TomTom at regular intervals.
TomTom has collaborated with its partners in this way for most of its history [Check out these stories to see for yourself.] But now, with its new Maps Platform, it will be even easier for partners to contribute to, and benefit from, the company’s pool of global geospatial data. Sharing data among partners is a core part of the new platform’s architecture.
Rather than just pointing out where the map needs an edit or making that edit directly, data will flow more freely between TomTom and its partners to suggest map changes with less human intervention. The data they supply will remain largely the same — this will include road network information, POI data, addresses, street names, location context and so on.
Partners are valuable sources as the data they provide often comes directly from ground truth observations, such as inputs from rideshare and delivery drivers — it’s typically very accurate and relevant to their specific use case.
In some cases, TomTom’s partners prefer to edit the map directly with their own in-house expertise as it allows them to prioritize changes they want to see reflected in the map. TomTom will continue to provide this option to them.
In its current map, TomTom uses partner leads, but with its new platform, the bandwidth to accept changes, perform quality checks on them, validate them and push them to the map will increase.
Of course, business critical data will be ringfenced and kept exclusive for each business in their own layer — unless it must satisfy open-source licenses, in which case edits will flow back to OpenStreetMap, for example. Everything else will contribute to making a unified, powerful and robust record of ground truth that will be shared throughout TomTom’s partners, allowing them all to benefit from the data pool’s collective mapping efforts.
When this happens, the quality of the map accelerates. It's not limited by the pace of any one company. And it creates a foundation for innovation as everyone in the industr is referring to the same record of ground truth.
TomTom’s CEO Harold Goddijn stresses the importance of creating a foundation for collaboration with its new map platform. “The TomTom Maps Platform supports our strategy to foster an ecosystem where the world comes together to create the smartest map on the planet,” he said in the announcement.
TomTom is already talking to a handful of new partners from the tech industry, as well as discussing broader collaborations with a few longstanding partners. While they can’t be named yet, we do know one thing: the broader and more diverse those partners become, the stronger and smarter the map grows.

OpenStreetMap: Intricately detailed maps

TomTom also aspires to extend its definition of community beyond commercial partners, to grow its position as an active member of the OSM community — both in terms of using data from OSM to enhance the new TomTom map in line with its Open Database License (OBdL) and through sharing additional map data and other mapping resources back to OSM editors.
Like many companies that work with OSM data, TomTom has a dedicated OpenStreetMap outreach team to deal with this. It has a dual mission: “Make sure that TomTom’s use and improvement of OSM data is done according to the community’s guidelines and uncover opportunities for TomTom to support the OSM community’s many mapping initiatives,” Courtney Williamson, OSM Engagement Lead, explains.
Over the past decade, OpenStreetMap has exploded to become one of the best-known and most detailed maps of the planet. Over its 18-year history, more than 9 million people have signed-up to edit the OSM map. At the moment, the platform has around 50,000 regular active users per month. Based around the globe, they make around 4 million map changes each day.
“The community is everything in OpenStreetMap, because they’re the ones that create the data,” Steve Coast, Founder of OSM, says.
The level of detail can be astounding. OSM’ers map individual trees, down to their species, trash bins, the color of buildings, types of barriers, fire assembly points and beyond. It’s mind bending. If you want to see all the kinds of feature tags OSM supports, check this out. As a data source, in terms of detail, OSM is one of the best in the world.
“That’s what makes it so challenging to work with. It’s hard to assimilate all that data, it’s just so much detail,” Williamson explains.
Despite the immense breadth of detail though, Harrell says OSM isn’t always appropriate for enterprise use. It’s designed for individual use, it’s not in a standardized format and feature and edit prioritization is left to the community. What’s more, as an entity it’s not structured for companies to work with, making it time consuming and resource intensive when they do. These are not bad things, but they're not aligned to the needs of most corporations that build with map data and need to scale.
OSM is designed to create a free and open map of the world that anyone can contribute to, “The Wikipedia of maps,” as Steve Coast says. It’s not a commercial mapping solution.
“OSM was built for people who walk, ride bikes and hike, as well as drive. By contrast, mapmaking companies must consider mobility, navigation, ADAS and other routing concerns,” Williamson explains. “Combining OSM data with a commercial map takes a lot of time and people and it’s tricky too. But the result will be powerful.”
That’s where TomTom’s new mapping platform comes in.
“Using OpenStreetMap will be a game changer in the mapmaking industry. It’s continuously updated by millions of active mappers. It allows TomTom to deliver the richest, most detailed, accurate to ground truth and dynamically updated global map. Frederic Julien, Director Product Management, OSM at TomTom Before his time at TomTom, Frederic worked in Telenav, TeleAtlas and has been an active OSM contributor for a number of years.
TomTom will be the first global location data provider to directly integrate OpenStreetMap data, Julien tells me.
As part of its new platform, TomTom plans to take key data from OSM, validate it and standardize it for commercial enterprise use. Validation includes checking the data for bad edits or vandalization and ensuring everything is as it should be before integrating it with the TomTom base map. If it something isn't quite right, data is quarantined, cross-referenced against TomTom's other sources and corrected accordingly. Standardization is the process of ensuring all the data is in a useful and consistent format.
Like any company that uses OSM, TomTom will ‘share-back’ any improvements it makes to the OSM data as per its community guidelines.
At its Capital Markets Day, the company explained that there will be an uplift to both maps in terms of data. “Those using OpenStreetMap can get the full coverage of TomTom’s road network,” Michael Harrell, VP Engineering TomTom Maps Platform, said.
It should be noted that OSM data is supplementing what TomTom is building, not replacing it. Its data will allow the company to potentially address use cases beyond navigation, routing and more automotive focused applications.
Speaking to the many TomTom teams responsible for sourcing OSM data, complying with its guidelines and attribution requirements, and engaging with the OSM community, it’s clear they’re taking their involvement with the project seriously. And with good reason too — TomTom’s commercial platform requires quality OSM data. By investing in the OSM community, TomTom’s map improves but so does the OSM platform. It becomes a better, more accurate version of itself. It’s a symbiotic relationship of sorts, one that should benefit TomTom and OSM alike.
[There's a lot to unpack when it comes to TomTom and OSM's relationship. We'll be writing more about that in the near future so be sure to check back.]

More data means more value

It’s important to note that many of the sources TomTom is using to power its new map have existed for a while. In some cases, especially with SDO and partners, the company has long used data they gather to inform changes to its geospatial database. It’s also worked with OSM for a while too.
However, there has never been an open, transparent and collaborative platform — a commercial one — through which to assimilate the data from all these places, in one place, in a standardized, quality-checked form and turn it into something valuable and useful that businesses, developers and engineers can benefit from quickly and efficiently.
The days of static geospatial databases are over. To keep pace with the world, mapmakers need to be agile and tooled up to make updates as quickly and accurately as possible. The best way to do that is by using a carefully curated set of high-value sources.
Combining all of these sources will give TomTom the best chance of making the smartest, most accurate map on the planet. A map that can power ride-hailing apps, food delivery, fleet and logistics, insurance calculations and specialist commercial routing algorithms. There's no one else in the market that's taking such a comprehensive approach to building its map.
TomTom is definitely on to something.
Thanks to the proliferation of and demand for location data, the success of peer-produced geospatial projects, like OpenStreetMap and the willingness of the global mapmaking community to collaborate, TomTom’s new map isn’t going to be bound by the pace of any one company’s efforts.
“It moves as fast as the combined effort of many different companies across the world,” Harrell says. “[The map] even accelerates in what its capabilities are because everybody’s adding their own little pieces of innovation on top of it.”
When companies can worry less about making their own map and turning their location data into something useful, they’re given the space, time, funds and resources to innovate. They have more opportunity to focus on what matters to them, what makes them unique and competitive in the market.
“This open solution should create a significant acceleration in innovation,” Harrell adds.
It’s a big bet. One that no one in the industry has ever made. But it’s one that must be made if TomTom is going to make the world’s smartest and most useful map. Could it be what’s needed to usher in a new wave of location-based tech? We’ll have to wait and see.
