2023.06.02 21:01 twophonesonepager Losing track of time…. Please help.

I’m 33 today but it’s not a happy birthday. Each birthday reminds me and those around me of my ailment. As I sit in my wheelchair, facing the two melting candles, I feel unable to muster a deep enough breath to blow them out.
My wife stares sadly at me, and my few friends gathered do the same. I know what they are thinking, is this “his last birthday? he looks ready to kick it.”
To describe my problem in the simplest of terms: I am old.
My face is wrinkled like that of a 90 year old, my body is spotted and the skin hangs off it in the most unattractive of places. I’m losing my eyesight, my hair is white, and I’m barely able to walk on my own. I’m so fucking old my boney, vein-riddled hands shake as I try to raise a spoonful of cake to my mouth. I mash the cake around my mouth with the few teeth I have left.
And all this biological ageing has happened to me over the last seven years. The doctors had many theories, but no solutions. Some said Progeria, the premature ageing syndrome, but that starts when you are young, usually just two years old. I was in my mid twenties when my ageing accelerated.
The doctors were not only useless they were suffocating. When you have an ailment as rare as mine there is an overwhelming pressure from the science and medical community to “discover” the cause. You might think this a good thing…. a glimmer of hope that my condition could be halted or reversed - but no - they are fuelled by greed. If they could figure out the cause of my ageing, they could potentially gain insight into all human ageing, and how to slow it and ultimately how to profit in the billions.
So I called a halt to the daily testing and life of a lab rat. And now I plan to live out my newfound old age in private, with my wife and friends.
I’m 33. I should be traveling the world, snowboarding, dancing, getting drunk with friends and staggering home yelling obscenities at five in the morning. But age has descended on my now frail body like an ever shrinking prison cell.
For six years I’ve turned to reddit for help on many varied topics. Troubleshooting houseplants, DIY car repair and even how to brush my dog’s teeth. I write this in a last ditch attempt that someone, a doctor, a psychologist or biologist, can identify what’s happening to me and help.
I think I was 26 when I started losing track of time. The scary thing is, I find that it’s really hard to remember the second half of my 20’s at all. It went by so, so fast. I have to look back at old emails, entries into my calendar and text messages to remind myself of where I was and what I was doing over the past few years.
But I do vividly remember when I first noticed time slipping on me. It was 2016, a year of many forgetful films and very few good ones. As a film buff I was always at the movies or reading the trade mags. I was at the cinema with Sammy (my girlfriend) watching one of the only good films of that year, Arrival.
Sammy and I shared a love for films and we sat in the very front row of a late night screening, so as to have the screen to ourselves. About 30 minutes into the film, it became tense, Sammy and I held hands. In a blink the credits were rolling. As the lights came up Sammy turned to me to get my thoughts on the film, but I had missed almost all of it. I was so embarrassed at having apparently fallen asleep, that I just agreed with everything that Sammy said about the film and then returned the next day to watch it alone.
This sort of thing started to happen more and more, and I thought I was losing my mind. There were times when Sammy and I would be in bed spooning after an evening love session, and suddenly it would be morning and I would feel completely unrested.
Other times my loss of time was welcoming. Like the time we flew 13hrs to Australia, in cramped seats with crying babies on either side. That flight which was bound to torture me for hours felt as if it was just ten minutes long.
But I wasn’t really scared until I noticed the physical effects of lost time. It started with the crows feet around my eyes, then the grey hairs began to appear, the back pain and eventually the liver spots. All of this before the age of 30.
The hardest part was the reaction of those around me. My friends teased at first, about the grey hair and the wrinkles but as my condition developed most of them became concerned or disappeared from my life entirely.
At Christmas when a family photo was taken, I was devastated to see I looked older than my own parents.
And yet Sammy stayed by my side, never seeming to notice, never seeming to be concerned or bothered despite me constantly unloading my despair on her. Sammy just continued to smile, her youthful smile, a smile that never changed over the seven years we’ve been together.
And now as I chew my cake and Sammy happily enjoys hers and laughs with our friends, I wonder why she stuck with me so long. She hasn’t changed a bit from the day I met her, she was 21 at the time and doesn’t look a day older now. When people see us together they think she’s my granddaughter. When they find out we’re a couple they are then disgusted and think she’s a gold-digger, the sad part is I’m far from rich and she is now the sole provider for our household.
I fall asleep in my chair, which is common these days as I have little energy, and by the time I awake my friends have all left. Sammy wheels me out of the kitchen and into the bedroom. She gets in the shower and I ease myself out of the chair and change into the pyjamas that are folded on the corner of the bed.
I’m determined again tonight not to lose track of time. This is something I do every night now.
I lay on my side, the covers pulled up to my chin, and I stare at the clock on the bedside table.
The time is 9:48 PM.
As the clock ticks I count the seconds in my head. tick. tick. tick. tick.
I’m not ready to die.
tick. tick.
I have my whole life ahead of me.
tick. tick.
I’m terrified.
tick. tick.
I count every second and every minute until Sammy comes out of the bathroom ready for bed.
The time is 10:28 PM.
Sammy lays down beside me, puts her arm around me and grabs my hand. The time is 7:15 AM.

At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had other people raising eyebrows when he said that his long-awaited superhero debut in Spider Man Across the Spider Verse would be the beginning of “a new era” for the DC Extended Universe naturally followed: What did he mean? And what would that kind of reset mean for the remainder of DCEU's roster, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the rest of the Justice League, Suicide Squad, Shazam and so on.As

Spider Man Across the Spider Verse neared theaters, though, Johnson clarified that statement in a recent sit-down with Yahoo Entertainment (watch above).

“I feel like this is our opportunity now to expand the DC Universe and what we have in Spider Man Across the Spider Verse, which I think is really cool just as a fan, is we introduce five new superheroes to the world,” Johnson tells us. Aldis Hodge's Hawkman, Noah Centineo's Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell's Cyclone and Pierce Brosnan's Doctor Fate, who together comprise the Justice Society.) “One anti-hero.” (That would be DJ's Spider Man Across the Spider Verse.)

“And what an opportunity. The Justice Society pre-dated the Justice League. So opportunity, expand out the universe, in my mind… all these characters interact. That's why you see in Spider Man Across the Spider Verse, we acknowledge everyone: Batman , Superman , Wonder Woman, Flash, we acknowledge everybody. There's also some Easter eggs in there, too.So that's what I meant by the resetting.Maybe 'resetting' wasn't a good term.only

one can claim to be the most powerful superhero .And Johnson, when gently pressed, says it's his indestructible, 5,000-year-old Kahndaqi warrior also known as Teth-Adam, that is the most powerful superhero in any universe, DC, Marvel or otherwise

. "By the way, it's not hyperbole because we made the movie."And we made him this powerful.

There's nothing so wrong with “Spider Man Across the Spider Verse” that it should be avoided, but nothing—besides the appealing presence of Dwayne Johnson—that makes it worth rushing out to see. spectacles that have more or less taken over studio filmmaking, but it accumulates the genre's—and the business's—bad habits into a single two- hour-plus package, and only hints at the format's occasional pleasures. “Spider Man Across the Spider Verse” feels like a place-filler for a movie that's remaining to be made, but, in its bare and shrugged-off sufficiency, it does one positive thing that, if nothing else, at least accounts for its success: for all the churning action and elaborately jerry-rigged plot, there's little to distract from the movie's pedestal-like display of Johnson, its real-life superhero.

It's no less numbing to find material meant for children retconned for adults—and, in the process, for most of the naïve delight to be leached out, and for any serious concerns to be shoehorned in and then waved away with dazzle and noise. Spider Man Across the Spider Verse” offers a moral realm that draws no lines, a personal one of simplistic stakes, a political one that suggests any interpretation, an audiovisual one that rehashes long-familiar tropes and repackages overused devices for a commercial experiment that might as well wear its import as its title. When I was in Paris in 1983, Jerry Lewis—yes, they really did love him there—had a new movie in theaters. You're Crazy, Jerry."Spider Man Across the Spider Verse " could be retitled 'You're a Superhero, Dwayne'—it's the marketing team's PowerPoint presentation extended to feature length.

In addition to being Johnson's DC Universe debut, “Spider Man Across the Spider Verse” is also notable for marking the return of Henry Cavill's Superman. The cameo is likely to set up future showdowns between the two characters, but Hodge was completely unaware of it until he saw the film.

2023.06.02 21:01 gamerboy000000 Thinking of breaking six months of no contact

I stopped talking to my mom almost exactly six months ago. I don’t know if my mom is a narcissist, but I’ve found this sub very helpful in feeling less alone. My mom is extremely religious, and I believe the nature of religion can mimic narcissistic traits even if the person isn’t necessarily a narcissist themselves. After revealing to my parents that I was moving away from my hometown with my Jewish boyfriend who I live with, I was attacked by my sister and my mom and spent a few months trying to defend myself over email. I pulled the plug when my mom, who is aware I have rare and potentially life-threatening disease, told me that this disease and dying young could be an opportunity to be a testimony for God’s love. That’s the straw that broke the camel’s back. I told her what she said was extremely insensitive and that I would reach out when I was ready. The only attempts at communication I’ve received since is a generic birthday card with a Bible verse and an email letting me know a distant relative had died both of which I did not respond to. Today she texted me saying that she misses me and sent a photo of her flower garden.
I have been thinking about reaching out but haven’t because I don’t know if I’m ready and I don’t know what to say. Should I take this as my opportunity to connect again? It weirdly feels almost like a competition to me to see how long I can hold out and I can’t help but feel like I’ve failed myself if I respond after the first genuine attempt she makes at communicating. I am unsure why I feel this way, but I think it is because all the words I said to her did not make her understand how hurt I am by her and my sister’s treatment and I feel like the only way for her to understand is by not communicating. But I don’t think I can just never speak to my mom again for the rest of my life. I don’t even know what to say if we did speak. I haven’t spoken to her in 6 months. I don’t trust her with information about my life. I don’t even know where to begin to find common ground for discussion.
Do I respond to this message? What do I say? I don’t miss her as a person, but I miss having a mother.

2023.06.02 20:56 Shummers561 Offering Kratom to my Grandfather?

Don't want to make this too long. He is dying and is against pain killers. But he is in lots of pain, he takes tons of OTC stuff, his body is eating away at his muscle mass &body fat, he weighs less than I do now (I weigh like 130), he can barely walk with his cane, and he generally seems very uncomfortable in his body, and in pain, and unhappy. He finally bluntly said "I am dying" to me and "Something is eating me from inside" yesterday.
He's been to over 3 different doctors. He's spent $10,000s on medical treatments that did nothing. He's endured more pain from prescriptions that don't help like promised. He's being played by doctors but he's an old patriot-type who doesn't quite understand how the medical system here isn't all good people trying to help and heal. I'm interested in writing an article/essay to document his experiences being disregarded to die by the medical system, and I am interested in using this situation as an angle to write about how substances like Kratom can be used as an incredible drug for easing my grandfather's end of life, and also how things like CBD, Med. Thc, and Kratom can be used for harm reduction and as ways to circumvent our horrible medical system until change comes.
But I want to make sure I do it right. He's skeptical of trying drugs of any kind and doesn't want to form a dependance. I don't know how to explain what kratom is without his "just say no" sirens going off. I would only offer the types of dosages I take for my own chronic pain, which is max of 4g. Also considering what ROA would make sense. I could put a small amount of extract into a capsule.
I'm just trying to be cautious, please just chime in with any thoughts or suggestions. I was over at his house the other day to help around the yard with the work he can no longer do, and I took some kratom for my own pain from the yard work, and it felt wrong to use it for myself while not trying to offer in some way to someone who is skeptical but ultimately could benefit from it more than I could.
Also just saying, don't underestimate the political power of an ex-military old white guy! If we can get vets and other older people with pain, which is a common struggle of the elderly, behind kratom for their pain then we'll have the "help the poor elderly" appeal for keeping Kratom legal. And I feel like I can turn this into a powerful article in favor of Kratom.
Sorry for poor editing and phrasing etc. I don't have much time rn. Love yall have a good day.

2023.06.02 20:56 CntPntUrMom Newly minted diamond Terran doing 1-base all-ins, story time and replays

I’m posting this because I wanted to give the other noobs some things to think about, especially for those who want to progress “quickly” with low APM and real life responsibilities.

TLDR: Used Pig’s 2-base marine, tank, medivac all-in to get to Plat 1 in like six months, got pissed off at DTs and went with a different one-base all-in for each match up to get to Diamond 3. So it’s possible to suck less even if you inherently suck and don’t have time to get good. Replays below. Feedback welcome.

I started playing ranked in October 2022 after getting to where I could reliably beat Very Hard AI after about a month. I didn’t know what build orders were so I just did what the game’s training module had you do: build a supply depot, some barracks, some marines and marauders, and then go across the map to fight.
As you can guess, I got my ass kicked when I got on ladder and settled into Silver 1 after making some adjustments with an MMR of 2250. I sucked for like a month before I found Pig’s 2-base marine, tank, medivac all-in (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2pIZNCtIis). Then I simply spammed that build all the way to Plat 1. I made Gold 3 after a month of that build in early December, then just a week letter I hit Plat 3. When that build clicked, I completely smashed Gold players.
It took me until the end of February to make Plat 1, however. Things do change in Plat. Everyone has a “real” build they’re working on. And by the time I was mid-range Plat 1, the 2-base all-in just stopped working. I ended up in Plat 2 again for a while.
The problems I faced in Plat 1 were attributable to other players scouting my build and army and being flexible enough to counter what I was doing. They saw mass marines and they build colossus or massed banelings. Or they built lots of vikings and some ravens. And they started to catch me out on the map when I wasn’t sieged. That would have been fine if I had better micro or scouting, but with a whopping APM of about 60, and just half a year of play under my belt, I just didn’t have the micro or the knowledge of the game to counter their counters (still don’t).
But what really got me pissed off in Plat 1 was all the early aggression and harassment, especially from Protoss. DT drop in my main at 5 minutes. Mass blink stalker when I have just one tank out. Cannon rushing. Proxy Stargate right outside my main with several shield batteries, bleeding me out with voids and tempests. Felt like a sick joke.
It’s at this level that I also started to get hit with competently executed roach ravager all-ins. Basically free MMR for the Zerg. Nothing I could do. Even after learning about the counter online I never really got it right. Plus, by Plat 1, Zergs know how spread creep, micro banelings, get surrounds, and focus fire tanks with mutas and roaches. So, you know, real competition.
Terrans at this level also started to rush, proxy, harass, etc. They especially start to get good enough with reapers to screw up your build timings and even snowball them and kill you. The fast 2 tank 8 marine doom drop was particularly annoying. And don’t get me started on fast BC.
So, at this point, I knew I had to make a change if I wanted to make Diamond, which had become my goal. I could either buckle down and simply get good by practicing new build orders against the AI, working on my mechanics, doing some micro training, off-racing, etc. But I have two jobs and a new baby and a wife and all that, plus my APM sucks, so all that Rocky Balboa shit wasn’t going to happen.
Instead, after getting DT dropped a few too many times, I decided to go to the dark side and deploy some “brass knuckle builds”.
What got me to Diamond was a different one-base all-in against each match up and the 2-base all in from Pig when it’s a random player. Why one base all-in? The theory is pretty simple, and applies to all RTS games (maybe even turn based as well), and others have said it better. But basically, if I invest in fighting units while you’re investing in tech or expanding your economy, and I attack you before you start producing off that larger economy or better tech, then I will have more stuff when I arrive at your base to kill you than you have to defend your base. There comes a point when your expanded economy or better tech will kill my army, but if I kill you before you get to that point, it won’t matter.
The real reason I switched, however, was pure rage: I was just utterly fucking done with DT drops. I wanted a build that would kill Protoss before the DTs came, or that would base trade well enough that the DTs on the map wouldn’t matter. Then I figured I’d just do the same thing to the other races as well.
After about a month, I found myself beating D3 and D2 players as I practiced the one-base builds in unranked. That was my cue to move back over to ranked and climb. And climb I did, and here I am.
Some replays of the one base builds are here:

Vs. Protoss (https://drop.sc/replay/23661376)
2-1-1
Reactor marines, 2nd rax before factory, get stim ASAP, constantly produce marines and tanks, and when your two medivacs pop start moving across the map. Maybe mix marauders. Usually build a third medievac and keep pumping out marines, adding tanks if needed/as gas allows. The key to this is to keep the tanks alive as long as possible. Mules or scvs can help keep tanks alive.
Vs. Terran (https://drop.sc/replay/23661370)
1-1-1
Reactor marines, start tanks right away, starport with reactor right away, and move across the map as soon as the second tank is out. Scan the natural/main before you show up to find tanks. Always produce four vikings, then third tank, and then the fight dictates what you produce next. Can also proxy the starport, but I kept getting hit with cloaked banshees or doom drops when I did that so I stopped. Sometimes if things stall out at their base, I build two medivacs and drop the main with two tanks and eight marines, then push the front. That usually kills one of us and I can move on.
Vs. Zerg (https://drop.sc/replay/23661723)
1-2-0
Probably the oddest build. I don’t know if this is a “real” build since I more or less just made it up through trial and error, but I have more success with it than I do against the other races with the other builds. Basically I reasoned that blue flame hellbats would absolutely wreck whatever zerg had, provided there was tank support and Thors on the way to deal with mutas. Add in marauders to tank damage. Two marines to start just to deal with early lings and to snipe the overlord, blue flame ASAP, then nothing but bats, marauders (w/concussive), and tanks. Sometimes +1 attack if I’m feeling lucky. Roll out when the second tank pops, then either build a third tank or go straight to thors. Thors are better for larger maps because by the time the thor gets there the mutas might be out and you want two thors to fight the mutas.
Vs. Random
No sense showing you my implementation of Pig’s build. The only variation I make is that I hit with 1-1 a tiny bit later than he hits with +1 attack because I drop my ebay sooner. Costs me some marines early on but seems to pay off later and it does give me detection sooner. Sometimes I’ll even put reactors on the 4th and 5th rax if there was early harass or a failed push and I think I have the time.

So, that’s it folks. I figure one day these builds won’t be enough to have fun anymore and I’ll decide to actually learn the game. Until then, you see you noobs at your natural between 4-5 minutes into the match.

2023.06.02 20:55 SimilarSherbert1 "just friends" Stepmother in law

My husband (33) and I (f/30) had had a quick engagement and wedding. When we met, he had told me that his parents divorced amicably 15 years ago when he left for college, and he now has a stepmom who is 18 years younger than his dad. I was absolutely fine with that.
We met the father and stepmother a few days before the engagement. After a few post-dinner drinks, my FIL let slip a few things my husband had conveniently omitted during our short courtship.
My FIL and his 2nd wife met when she was 19 and he was 37 married and the father of two kids. He rented the place across from her parents. He wasn't invested in his marriage, ignored his wife, and showered his children with gifts. He got his young college going neighbour woman a job in his company after she graduated. He couldn't leave his family with his folks still around. When they died, one fine day over morning coffee, my FIL announced to my MIL that he doesn't want to be married to her anymore. Hurt and confused, she asked why. He clarified he didn't "want to be married to anyone". Essentially, it was ANYTHING but amicable.
He moved out a week later, into a building where the college going neighbofamily friend/colleague (now 33 while he's 51) also lived. He kept up pretences and told everyone they're friends for 14 years. Suddenly, he married her a month after my husband flew out of the country for a job. I presume that was to ensure that none of his kids attend his wedding. Everything with my FIL has been shady.
His second wife or SM insists that she is not a parent to my husband and that they're 'just friends' - after all, they're just 18 years apart in age not unlike my FIL and her. When I came into my husband's life, she was doing my husband's taxes, his shopping, all documentation, etc. Calling her was the only way for my husband to communicate with his father because his father wouldn't attend his own son's calls directly. I presume this was a tactic to have her integrate into the family as the mom figure. ( Not possible, quite a bit of intense betrayal, pain and suffering there)
The first time we stayed at their house, when we came out for breakfast, the SM commented on how "pink my husband's lips looked". My brain shut down for a second. Becase ...sorry what..... And she repeated to him, "your lips are so pink, my God your lips" and giggled like a hormonal teenager.
I found that inappropriate. I began noticing her extra loud laughter around my husband, her intense need to speak to him everyday, her daily texts to him which he never replied to. She was markedly different with my husband's younger brother. Not quite as, well, distracting.
We began discussing her and my husband realised, well, that there was something off. He began distancing from her, and that set off a tantrum.
The SM called him one day at work to scream and cry about how he was "ignoring" her, he listened for a while as she shouted which by the way made him very anxious. He cut the call after pointing out that he didn't wish to address this at work. Right after, in his stead, she called me while I was at work. She screamed and cried to me as well, asking for answers. I calmly told her that it wasn't mine to answer, and only my husband could address her concerns.
After calling me, she called my husband again. And again. And again. She called him thirty times.
He freaked out, realised there's something weird in how she perceived their relationship. He finally dropped a long time message to his father telling him how absolutely rubbish it was, the deceit that the second wife and him played on their family for the last 20 years. He expressed his discomfort with her to his father. Now his father wants him to apologise for the text and accept his second wife in our lives wholeheartedly. This is where we are today.
Neither my husband, nor I want that. We want FIL to be in our lives, but that's it. We can't do wholehearted acceptance of 'just friends' SM. What do we do.

2023.06.02 20:54 NadalaMOTE Pride Month is going to be really hard

A lot of my trauma is due to my strict religious upbringing in the Mormon church whilst coming to terms with being gay. So many times I was called sick, and disgusting; compared to a paedophile. Told in graphic detail about my step-father's rape by another man when he was 16. Told that I was going to get raped, get AIDS, and die. That satan was ruining my life.
There is so much hatred for the LGBTQ+ community right now. Trans people and drag queens are being dragged through the mud under the pretext of protecting children, but it's not about that. It's never been about that. Because I was a kid, born to straight parents, brought up in a religious heteronormative environment where any deviation from "normal" was offensive and gross, and I still ended up gay, and I wasn't protected. I wasn't protected from any of the same shit that's being said now.
Every time I look at the news and see a new anti-trans bill or speaker or protested drag performance my heart aches. It literally aches. Because they're saying all that same bullshit now that they said about me when I was growing up. And it never made me straight. It just made me broken. Being gay didn't do that to me; homophobia did. Hate hurt me. Hate has destroyed me.
I was such a happy kid. I ran and danced and sang and performed and swam and I loved it. How could they turn that happy and harmless kid into a broken shell? How can they keep doing that now, when we know what it really does to people? There are going to be a whole generation of new kids like me, seeing this hate, internalising it, thinking it's their fault. Kids are going to end their lives because of this. And I can't stop it from happening all over again. I just have to watch.
I'm so scared. I am so so scared.

2023.06.02 20:54 Mista9000 Perfectly Safe Demons -Ch 13- Kidnappers hate this one weird trick!

[Chapter One]
Prev and Next

Late at night, in the back of a warehouse.
Grigory squirmed against his restraints. The rope binding his hands was coarse and too tight, causing his hands to lose feeling. A bored council guard stood nearby, but was mostly ignoring him. He wasn’t going to get far with his hands and feet tied together. It was worse than he had thought possible. They are very much going to kill him tonight. This was even worse than either Stanisk or Aethlina had speculated, and he just knew that they would use his role in this disaster against him in future disagreements. However, he might be overly optimistic worrying about a future that might not include him.
Grigory thought over what he had left in his notebooks, contemplating if it would be enough for someone to continue his work. He wasn't sure. It was a lot more than he started with, but there weren't a lot of qualified scholars looking to follow his footsteps. The best outcomes for a lot of different paths all need him to survive.
Grigory tried not to be distracted by the ropes digging into him, and frantically wracked his mind for any sort of escape plan. He had a single imp totem on him, and they left him with his satchel nearby. That’s something. He would need to be untied to invoke it, and a single perfectly safe imp wouldn’t change the balance of power much. Perhaps if everyone but the four executive members left, he and Stanisk might have a chance to overpower them. Well he could at least be distracting while Stanisk overpowered them. They also hadn’t checked his satchel yet, so maybe he could bribe them with the ten thousand glindi engraved gold bar he brought to pledge his support? Bribes are a type of negotiation, and being tied up while they already had the gold put him in a frustratingly weak position to start negotiations. Not getting executed by the organised crime successor to the Council of Demonologists wasn’t on his list, but he still felt it was important.
Grigory could clearly see and hear the meeting continue in the centre of the warehouse. A small detail that he noticed was just how small the sums were. Robberies of a few hundred glindi? The value of a business protection racket being ten glucks a week? Had the runaway success of his imp-made goods distorted his value of money? Pandemonium Partners profited a few hundred thousand a month, and the big safe in the workshop’s basement held about a million glindi, mostly in heavy gold bars. That was after the expenses, taxes and salaries had been paid. Maybe bribes will work here.
Another trend that emerged was how cheap lives appeared to be. Stole a knife from the boss? Death. Miscounted the take? Death. Didn’t show up to the job? Finger loss. How they attracted or retained any talent at all was its own mystery. On that note, we wonder if he enormously overpaid his people? These goons were killing each other over sums of money close to what he paid each of his security goons a day, which in turn was a fraction of what he was paying his partners. All the people he hired seemed excited when he told them the starting salary, and not a single one asked for a raise. Not the time for that! Focus on the matter at hand! Grigory continued to look for anything that he could use to escape.
All too soon the business part of the meeting was concluded. Two of the Council's guards wheeled out a cask of beer, and a crate of cheap clay mugs. Not great news for plans that require being left alone. In singles and groups the ‘Demonologists’ started to come over to where he was tied up. To drink cheap beer and look upon true evil in his demon summoning face.
“Hullo gentlemen! This is all a silly mistake, I’m sure we can work something out,” Grigory said with a calmness and pleasantness he didn’t feel.
A gangster in a threadbare tunic and patched leather pants started going through his coat, and then his satchel. His notebooks with neatly written titles were thrown on the floor, and the minor spell reagents placed on top of a nearby crate.
“Holy shit!” he exclaimed far too loudly, ensuring everyone saw him pull out the slim gold bar, about the size of a knife handle. “This can’t be real?!” The gangster saw how everyone near him stared, mouths agape at the bar in his open hand. The bar’s engraving of the Royal Mint of Hiruxia glinting in the flickering rushlight.
“Back off! I found it!” He held the gold tight in his fist and drew his dirty, nicked knife from his belt with his free hand. Quicker than a blink of an eye every member had their blades out and the men at arms from the edges moved towards the commotion.
“PUT IT AWAY!” boomed Arcanist Devorio. He reasserted control of the situation with palpable menace. “The prisoner and all his goods are the property of the Council! Put it down on the table, Tricky Tupo!”
The gangsters grudgingly resheathed their weapons, and Tricky Tupo passed the bar to the Arcanist without making eye contact.
“Holy shit, it is actually real gold!” Devorio muttered after inspecting it for a second. “Where the hell did you steal something like this?”
Something in his phrasing crystalized a plan in Grigory’s mind. An insane, reckless, dangerous plan. Grigory tried not to smile when he replied, “Not stolen at all, well not from our plane of reality.”
“You summoned it?” the well dressed head of the council asked incredulously.
“Oh no, not at all! I stole it from the treasury of Hell! You see that’s the point of having a perfectly obedient demon, it does what I say, and not what the Lords of Hell say,” Grigory lied. The Hellplane wasn’t organised like that at all. There was no such thing as a treasury there. He still wasn’t sure how to sell it, but he hoped there was enough ignorance and greed in the room to do the heavy lifting for him.
“Demonologists have never stolen from hell! As far as I know. I think?” The arcanist was in uncertain territory.
“Mostly true! But we steal minor things all the time, like magical energy, or arcane secrets, but the exciting advance I wrote to you about was stealing things like minerals or artefacts and sometimes regular boring gold.” Grigory was hoping he was priming their greed enough. He worried he was being too subtle.
“Well, it looks like you have a new job! You steal Hell gold for us now!” The Arcanist-turned-crime-lord was back in familiar territory of coercing people into giving him what he wanted.
“Oh I couldn’t!" Grigory feigned reluctance. “I don’t have the right equipment, I haven’t done the full balancing equations for today’s planar alignments! I should go home and get what I need, and I’ll be happy to come back tomorrow and we can get a fresh start on this.”
“Not a chance! You’re doing the ritual this instant, or your blood will cover this entire floor!” Davenio countered.
Grigory, aware that excess blood could damage goods, decided against arguing. “Alright, you win, I’ll have my imp steal another dozen gold bars tonight, I guess. But that’s it! I’m leaving after that!”
“Hah! We’ll see about that!” The arcanist cut Grigory’s bonds while staring straight into his eyes.
Grigory rubbed his sore wrists, and looked at the fifty or so people that had gathered around him. Cruel smiles and the stink of cheap beer surrounded him, but he had a plan. “First I’ll need to summon my imp, to help me set up the ritual!” Grigory found himself speaking like a showman at a fair, with exaggerated gestures and in a loud clear voice. The assembled thugs, goons and crime lords backed up to give him some space. Aethlina suggested obscuring the details of invoking a demon, which was a great idea. He slowly and rhythmically chanted in demonic detail how he likes his tea, with lots of hand gestures and steps and ritualistic looking movements. After a few long seconds he pulled out the imp totem from his vest, waved it around like a wand for a bit before doing the quick gesture of invocation to actually invoke the imp. With two small clicks the tiny imp landed on the rough floorboards of the warehouse. Several goons gasped, and one of the lady goons even shrieked a bit. Truly a sad state of affairs when someone calling themselves a demonologist is startled by a tiny perfectly safe imp!
Grigory picked up his notebooks from the floor, and found the one titled ‘Charts, Formulas, and Tables.’. Doing some mental maths, and modifying a few old spells and rituals on the fly, Grigory gave his imp simple directions in demonic. He could have just spoken plainly, but he was aware he was also putting on a show. Keeping everyone’s attention was important for the next part.
“Ahem, is there any furnace ash, or the like? I’ll need to create a circle in ash or wax or sand.” A few people turned to look for what he needed, and Grigory returned to working out the planar alignment in his notebook. They returned with a canvas bag of stove ashes, he looked them over and nodded. “Does anyone have a silvered steel blade I can use? Anyone at all? No matter, I have one!” Grigory pulled out the small pocket knife he used to cut his food with. It actually was silvered steel, since that also came up from time to time in his line of work. Besides it was interesting to learn that was the only silvered steel blade in the room.
Grigory passed the bag of ash to the imp. He gave detailed instructions on the shape, symbols, and spacing of the elements, all crucial to the huge circle taking shape in the middle of the warehouse floor. The assembled crowd of dirty, dangerous, and desperate deviants started to look concerned. What had started as a bit of mean spirited fun was fast turning into the exact thing they knew was evil incarnate. A path to Hell was being built in front of them! A few moved to leave, but the others called them names and threatened their reputations, forcing them to stay and watch. There was a good reason to stay, there was about to be a lot of gold for everyone. In theory.
At last the preparations were complete. Grigory slowly walked the entire outside of his circle to make sure it was unbroken. He had done similar rituals before, but always with hours of double checking, and never with an audience. His hands were sweaty and shaking as he tore a page out of his notebook. Quickly, he scribbled down a final set of instructions in demonic script and handed it to the imp.
“Merp!” it said in agreement.
Grigory turned to address everyone. He saw a very worried Stanisk standing off to the back, and he subtly gestured for him to wait. Steadying his nerves for a second he addressed his gathered kidnappers, “Soon you will see a small tear in reality! Plug your ears, lest the screams of the damned drive you mad!” Grigory looked around, to make sure everyone was properly alarmed, and activated the ritual.
With a crack of thunder and a hurricane blast of dry wind that reeked of hot iron and sulphur Grigory’s surprise appeared in the centre of the circle. A towering rage demon, its black armoured hide covered in dancing hellfire, its wolf-like face filled with jagged fangs, and its shoulders brushing the rafters of the old warehouse. The assembled criminals looked up from the floor and saw the bipedal nightmare towering over them. They stood stalk still, not knowing how to react, nor sure what exactly was happening.
Grigory stood up straight and turned on the crowd, in a commanding bellow he condemned them, “What kind of idiots let a master demonologist do any summoning ritual he wants?! Look upon the true power of hell and despair!! Your petty schemes are –”
Grigory’s gloating was cut short by a foundation shaking roar from the demon. It started grabbing people at random, and biting them in half, throwing hunks of torso against the wall with splattering force. In accordance with the note, Grigory’s imp hopped up on the table, grabbed the bar of gold from where Arcanist Devorio put it, and sprinted figure eights between the demon's legs. With everyone’s fear AND greed now focused in the same area, Grigory took his stuff and ran for the door. Most of the so-called ‘demonologists’ were trying to escape, but a few were focused on the imp running with a gold bar held over its head. That was as much as a labourer would make in a year, and they couldn’t just walk away from that. The massive demon continued to kill and dismember with glee. The sound of tearing meat and snapping bones was even louder than the screams of the dying. As far as distractions go, Grigory was pretty proud of this one.
Grigory started for the door they had entered by. However, it was jammed with people trying to escape. He stopped at the edge of the chaos, trying to gather his thoughts. As he did, a better solution appeared to him. The demon grabbed one of the cutthroats that dove at the imp’s gold, and threw him at the wall with enough force to vaporise him. The impact filled the whole side of the warehouse in a steamy red mist, and sprayed meaty chunks over everything. The demon howled with laughter when he saw how people popped when thrown into walls.
The important part for Grigory was that there was now a second exit. An exit covered in gore and bone fragments, but entirely clear of goons. Signalling Stanisk, he made his way out through the wreckage. Slower than he’d like, and getting blood and worse on everything, but a clear path. The demon had stopped feeding entirely and was just throwing people as hard as he could, first at the floor then at other people. Its roars of rage were now peals of terrifying laughter. The air in the warehouse was thick with a mist of blood from the high energy impacts.
“I assume it knows not to kill us?” Stanisk asked in a ragged voice once he caught up to Grigory.
“Yes, but only not to kill people in purple. So don’t take off your tabard! It was the best I could do!”
They struggled out into the cool night air of the yard, free of the stenches of hell, gore and terror.
Stanisk looked down at his tabard, so soaked in fresh blood that it looked black. He ran even faster to the wagon.
“So this thing is just going to destroy the city until someone slays it then?” Stanisk asked, as they ran to the cart while frantically gesturing for his two guards to turn the wagon around and get it rolling.
“Oh no! Just until midnight” Grigory explained after he dove into the moving wagon. He wiped his blood soaked hands on his blood soaked robes, to no benefit.
Stanisk stared backwards at the destruction unfolding behind them. The demon had brought the warehouse down around himself and was clearly visible from the road. It was still energetically killing and smashing. “That's more than an hour! You reckon it’ll come for us?”
The single horse dragging a cargo wagon with four men on it was maddeningly sluggish
Grigory fumbled around for something to get the blood and bone fragments off his glasses. Finally finding part of his undershirt clean, he wiped them and he replied,“Oh my no,It’s bound to the summoning circle. Within a hundred paces.” They both watched as a few people fled on horseback, and a wagon rattled away at a gallop. Mostly it was a mess of shouting and terror. Knife fights broke out as people tried to commandeer the remaining horses. Horses were panicking and bolting without riders. Some survivors just ran away on foot. With every fresh kill the demon laughed so loud that Grigory felt like it was coming from his own skull.
“What the hell happened in there, sirs?” asked the terrified guard driving the cart.
Grigory turned around to answer, but Stanisk put a hand on his arm and answered instead, “Those filthy witches in there tried to kill us with a demon, but Grigory outsmarted them and turned it on its creators. Keep driving Kedril, we should be safe in an intersection or so.”
“Light preserve us all!” Kedril the driver said. “Is that a real demon Sir?”
Grigory watched the demon grab one of the goons fighting in the yard and threw him in a high arc towards the city centre. The demon’s arm cracked like a whip as it threw. The ragged corpse left a trail of blood mist as it arced far overhead.
Grigory answered calmly, “Yes.”
Grigory pulled out his demon totem from his robes, and devoked the imp, causing a gold bar a block and a half behind them to clatter to the blood soaked warehouse floor and slide into some debris. He was surprised how calm he felt. By all accounts his plan was in shambles and he’d stirred up a dozen hornets nests. Facing certain death and prevailing did wonders for one’s perspective.
Grigory looked over at Stanisk, and he was looking less calm. Which was entirely fair. A lot of uniquely horrific things happened tonight. Stanisk’s mouth was a tight line, face pale and eyes bloodshot. That might have just been blood from before, that got in his eyes.
“We can’t go through town looking like we bathed in the blood of the innocent, take us to the Golden Anchor’s warehouse on Glibstone Street. We own that place, we can clean up and change there,” Stanisk tersely told the driver.
Grigory countered, “First off, the previous owners of this blood were far from innocent, and secondly that’s across town, let's just lay in the bed, throw the rainsheet over us, and go to the main workshop.”
Stanisk groaned and tried to rub the blood off his face while he thought it over, but just smeared it around.
“Fine, Kedril, Remember to do a few triple left turns to make sure we aren’t being followed, like we discussed last month.” Stanisk undid the oilcloth on the side, connected it to the mounting points, and slid underneath.
“I think we need to review our plans!” Grigory whispered.
“Shhhh, cargo don’t talk.” Stanisk whispered back. The soldier cupped his head in one hand, and covered his eyes with the other and tried to get comfortable enough to sleep. Grigory rolled onto his back and stared at the cloth in front of his face. He tried not to dwell on the odd whip crack sound coming from behind them, nor the horrified gasps of the two guards on the driver’s bench while he mentally updated his plans.
****
A few hours later Grigory was bathed, wearing fresh clothes and feeling much better. He sat contemplating at the kitchen table in his workshop. He was troubled by what this was going to mean for his business and for himself. Stanisk was still in the tub cleaning up, and the two guards had been dismissed for the night. It was shortly after midnight now, and that meant more to Grigory than it did other nights. He hoped no one innocent died tonight, but he was also a little surprised how little he was bothered by the destruction he unleashed this evening. Considering it was the first time he took another human’s life, albeit indirectly, he expected a stronger emotional response. Part of this was a clear case of kill or be killed. Another part was these people were awful people. Grigory worried this might mean he had more subconscious bias against the value of the lives of the economically disadvantaged, but that’s probably not it. Being biassed against people that were willing to kill him made more sense, but also he knew the coming years mean that will become the same as willing to kill most of the world.
Grigory put on some fresh tea, and set out another cup for Stanisk when he was done washing. He couldn’t shake the feeling that his worst fear, being mad with power and using that power to violently kill everyone he perceived as an enemy, wasn’t as far-fetched as it was before. These were the goons that might have killed his mentor, Archmage Willoford. Avenging a mentor was a reasonable rationale, at least in songs and plays. Grigory knew that wasn’t his motivation tonight. And besides that was the inquisition from the sounds of it, these ones just celebrated his mentor's execution, which isn’t really moral grounds for demonic dismemberment. He also knew he could have summoned a stench demon or a screaming demon, or just non demon based rituals he could have used to escape without violence. He didn’t even offer to bribe them, just straight to violence. Grigory wasn’t sure he liked finding out who he really was when lives were on the line.
His introspection was interrupted by a sound coming from his workshop door, and he sagged with relief when he saw it was just Aethlina. Relief that was short lived, because the questions started immediately.
“I assume you had something to do with the demonic giant that threw seventeen people into the side of the Cathedral of the Light?” the elv asked, without reproach or scorn.
Grigory took a second to answer. “I had something to do with the presence of that demon in our plane of reality. I had a little to do with either the people it chose to throw. Nothing to do with where it chose to throw them nor its accuracy. Interesting it threw them at the Cathedral, you’d think it would have some kinship with the church? They both love burning people.”
“By all accounts the accuracy at least, was excellent. All the bodies hit Cathedral Square. The Cathedral itself requires extensive repairs to the nave, and two flying buttresses collapsed. At least according to the terrified lady I ran into.” Aethlina paused for a few seconds in case Grigory chose to share more details.
Aethlina asked mildly, “How rude of me. I meant to ask, how did your meeting go tonight?”
Stanisk came out from around the partition wearing fresh clothes. “The fucking witches weren’t even witches! They were just shadow blighted gangsters what stole the demonologists reputation! Broke as shit, and twice as dumb!”
Stanisk grabbed a bottle of whiskey off the shelf and sat down at the table, ignoring the cup and the pot of tea. After drinking right from the bottle he continued, “It hit the actual main Cathedral? The one right in the centre of town? That’s like an hour walk from where we were! A catapult wouldn’t have thrown a person half that far!”
“The one and the same, The Grand Ubrafadter’s residence is in that square, so I assume what follows will be the sort of witch hunt the city has never seen before.” Aethlina turned to Grigory, “May I also assume your reasons for staying in the city are weaker and your reasons for leaving are stronger than they were yesterday?“
“There were definitely survivors, and I was introduced by name. I can’t stay here, probably not in the empire at all. I don’t think they know the name of the company, but Stanisk and I were wearing the company’s sigil, so it might not be long for them to work it out.” Grigory rubbed the bridge of his nose without taking off his glasses. “I guess we should start planning our exit immediately.”
In a rare show of emotion Aethlina smiled for a second, “We are leaving on a ship named the Widow’s Remorse, it’s provisioned for us and departs on the morning tide, in about nine hours. The captain agreed to wait until we were in open water to hear our destination. He and his crew also suffer from a rare medical condition where their memory fades entirely anytime they are given a bag of money. The ship can carry thirty-five passengers, so the guards can bring their families. I’ll describe the places I think we should go, after we are in open waters.”
Grigory was both very impressed and a touch alarmed. “Did you know what would happen at that meeting? Did you know what I was walking into?”
“No, I had mistakenly assumed you were on top of that, and took you on your word about them. The odds of them being what you expected were poor. I also had a detailed plan in case they kidnapped you.”
Stanisk burst out laughing, “Imagine if they kidnapped you, Boss! All trussed up like a rotisserie chicken! Hah! I guess I’ll get packed and meet back here to get everything organised! I’ll miss my townhouse, but I’ve had enough of living in Jagged Cove, it's loud and crowded.”
Stanisk stood up, and turned to leave, but paused mid stride. “Miss Aethlina, how big of an investigation do you reckon it’ll be? Reckon they could keep after us after we leave?”
“Likely. There are cases where the inquisition spent entire centuries on the trail of heretics and their descendents. Those heresies were vocally opposing an aspect of doctrine. This may be the first heresy in which a building-sized demon flung citizens into Cathedral Square. I assume yes, they will be interested in following up.”
“Alright, I’ve got an idea that might buy us some time. Grigory, are there any specific numbers that are significant to demons?”
“Um, not actually, but the older texts are filled with references to threes and eights I guess?” Grigory said with a shrug.
“Perfect!” Stanisks' smile strengthened and he turned to Aethlina. “Can you think of eight nobles, eight businessmen, and eight clergy the city would be better off without? Here, write 'em on this!” He slid her a notebook page when she nodded.
Grigory leaned forward,”I’m not sure what you are going for?”
“In the army, there was a famously clever bird that would trick soldiers, called a red heron. We are going to make a whole flock of ‘em!” Stanisk excitedly explained. “Oh, draw a demon circle on this page, doesn’t have to work or anything, like the one from the warehouse”
Grigory began his sketch. “I don’t think red heron is quite right, but I’m catching your drift.”
While they wrote, Stanisk went to the carved chest where all the imp totems for the workshop were stored, and invoked twenty four of them. Taking Aethlina’s list and Grigory’s sketch, he ordered each imp to sprint across town and use hellfire to scorch the circle into the street in front of the home of a specific name.
After the final imp bounded out of the building and was leaping along the rooflines Stanisk returned to his partners. “Now they’ll have too many leads! Hopefully folk see the imps and hellfire, that’ll be even better!”
“We can just outvoke them in an hour or so, that's easy enough. Great idea, Stanisk!” Grigory said cautiously, still thinking through the plan.
“If your big demon didn’t cause a public panic, I can’t imagine a better way to finish the job.” Aethlina replied.
Stanisk smiled and shrugged. “It wasn’t my good looks alone that kept me alive this long! I’ll send some runners to gather the lads and get this show on the road. Human runners I mean!”

At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had other people raising eyebrows when he said that his long-awaited superhero debut in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse would be the beginning of “a new era” for the DC Extended Universe naturally followed: What did he mean? And what would that kind of reset mean for the remainder of DCEU's roster, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the rest of the Justice League, Suicide Squad, Shazam and so on.As

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse neared theaters, though, Johnson clarified that statement in a recent sit-down with Yahoo Entertainment (watch above).

“I feel like this is our opportunity now to expand the DC Universe and what we have in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which I think is really cool just as a fan, is we introduce five new superheroes to the world,” Johnson tells us. Aldis Hodge's Hawkman, Noah Centineo's Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell's Cyclone and Pierce Brosnan's Doctor Fate, who together comprise the Justice Society.) “One anti-hero.” (That would be DJ's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.)

“And what an opportunity. The Justice Society pre-dated the Justice League. So opportunity, expand out the universe, in my mind… all these characters interact. That's why you see in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, we acknowledge everyone: Batman , Superman , Wonder Woman, Flash, we acknowledge everybody. There's also some Easter eggs in there, too.So that's what I meant by the resetting. Maybe resetting' wasn't a good term.only

In addition to being Johnson's DC Universe debut, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is also notable for marking the return of Henry Cavill's Superman. The cameo is likely to set up future showdowns between the two characters, but Hodge was completely unaware of it until he saw the film.

2023.06.02 20:51 Lucifer_Lightfall Moments That Truly Made You Realize?

Moments That Truly Made You Realize?
Over the years, I've given myself to so many. So much effort and forgiveness; so much certainty that I was doing all I could to be a good person. However, I wanted to share a few experiences that I've had that aroused my sense of justice and made me go "wait?"
These are some examples:
  1. The teens and young adults in my old congregation did nothing but bully me.
I grew up in a broken home. My parents were addicted to drugs. Me and my sister grew up on the anti-social side because of this. We were queit and very reserved. I ran to the Hall thinking it was my home, a place where I could heal and find true peace from my pains. So-called brothers and sister took delight in making fun of me for my quiet disposition. And I mean delight! Instead of being the Christian they claimed to be, they instead thought it would be a better option to relentlessly exclude and talk shit about the quiet, lonely, suicidal kid who just wanted a damn hug and some understanding. Bunch of demons, man!
One time in service we had an uneven number of publishers. Most were already paired off. One jokingly said that no one wanted to work with me. Another said that an angel would be my partner. Sweet and loving, right? The same person immediately retorted, "Oops, there goes the angel back to Heaven. Guess he didn't want to work him either." They all cruelly laughed. These people are evil.

  1. I gave constant apologies only to receive radio silence.
I had a crush on this one sister. Gave her gifts and cards. Every single time I gave her something, she would never object and took it with a smile. She gave not the slightest indication that she didn't harbor romantic feelings. And she never once took a brief moment to tell me that maybe my gift-giving made her uncomfortable. The only impression I could conclude was that she at least was okay with it. I tell her that I like her only to recieve:
"I appreciate your honesty. However, I do not like you. And I never will. Nothing you say or do will ever change that. If you can't control yourself, let me know. You are a little brother to me. That's it."
Excuse my language but. . . What in all the hells is wrong with these people? Thing is, I wasn't even offended by her message and understood (like a human being is supposed to). I responded back with, "Thanks for getting back to me. I feel like I can breathe now. I can control myself. I respect your feelings Big Sis! I won't ever take this tone with you again! I never meant to offend you or disrespect you. I'm sorry! Enjoy your day!"
What hurt was that this viper bitch had all the energy of Goku and a Spirit Bomb to be condescending to me. But not a single word to acknowledge an apology. It takes a lot to put yourself out there like that. That just shows how ready these people are to condemn and judge. Why would you respond as if I willfully ignored previous indications that you didn't feel that way? She never objected but lashed out as if she had. Do I look like Professor X to you? Maybe before being an asshole, try communicating before you condemn people based upon what little you think you know. Bunch of hurtful ass demons, man!

  1. The dating scene is anything but healthy.
Was dating this sister. She'd joke about infidelity constantly, despite me telling her how traumatizing my broken home was because of things like that. Told her things my own father will never know. I thought she loved me. Turns out most are only into paryting and looking cute. Some were secretly dating two people at a time. She was too, apparently. Told her once I found out that I didn't want to be with her. I said if you're willing to do that, that only shows me that fidelity means little to you. Why would I want to be party to something like that? Knowing fully that you'll do the same to me?
I stand up for myself and then all her friends unfollow me and treat me like an outcast.

  1. Pandemic and Moving.
Long story short, I struggled finding a home. Lived with dad, moved out to my best friend's for a month. Moved out; he was getting married. Move in with my biological sisters. Finally, right before the pandemic, I found a place. Best friend didn't even ask. Didn't inquire if I was ok. Didn't even ask to help me move. When did I finally hear from him? At the end of the intial month of the pandemic. What prompted his call? A shared friend of ours mentioned and asked about me at work to him.

  1. My Beard.
Became inactive for 2 whole years. Finally decided to drop in one night. I grew out of my dress clothes so I just wore what I had. I go for about 2 meetings and already I was pulled over to the side about my appearance.
Not my circumstances or mind. Not even my family or general situation. None of these:
-Brother can you even buy new clothes?
-How's it been?
-Are you homeless?
-Did any family die?
-Did you lose your job?
-Are you sick or suffering from illness?
-It's been two years; anything could've happened, are you okay?

A month prior I had a literal heart attack and was hospitalized for 2 weeks. No text. No call. No voicemail. No visits. No cards. NOTHING. Ok, so I made it my personal business to check up on friends and family. One of them said that I should shave my beard with a disdainful tone.

...I almost died...

And all you care about is my facial hair? . . .

Somebody please grab me some TOPSHELF! I think I need a drink!

M (29) So i’ve been with my wife (F29) since we were 13, married since we were 23. She finally came out to me about 1.5 month ago, even though i’ve known since she was 18 that she found women attractive. I’m really proud of her for finally acknowledging it & our relationship has blossomed because of it & our ability to have much deeper and open conversations about ourselves.
Its only been about a 1.5 months, but i’ve already known i was fine with her exploring herself outside of our marriage. Like i said, i’ve known she was bisexual for a decade, and I already knew i’d be okay with her exploring her sexuality. She lived in a bigoted household & our friends weren’t accepting of that lifestyle, and at first she had said that “if i died she would then explore her sexuality” but i don’t want to feel like i’m holding her back from experiencing life for potentially her entire life, if she were to pass before me. And i genuinely want her happy, it makes me so happy when she’s happy. 😊
This month we’ll be going to our first pride event together, and i’m so happy to support her.
Questions: - What should i wear as a CIS straight ally? I don’t wanna send wrong message or offend anyone at the pride event by wearing something inappropriate.
Thanks, and hope this post doesn’t ruffle feathers or offend anyone.

2023.06.02 20:50 g320_ Empathy?

I went with a friend to a graveyard. A relative from her died a few months ago. She cried and i was just quiet and did say very few words. I did not feel sad or feel anything, it was all thinking how to respond. Has this something to do with the illness?

2023.06.02 20:49 c_maxine The View Slumber Party episode

Okay so yes I’ve complained about the Patreon not being super worth it before, but this episode was sooo good. Some thoughts:
  1. It was worth the cost of Patreon just to see Holly and Bridget die over Hef barking. Didn’t see that coming.
  2. Also, did anyone find it bone chilling when Joy said “You’re not happy Holly, I can tell.” 💀 Smart lady.
  3. Holly looked so gorgeous (in the slumber party reaction I mean) that I was almost drooling and I’m a straight woman. Bridget looked great too, but lord Holly’s eyes are just so big and beautiful and her face shape and structure is like… so aesthetically pleasing? I don’t know how to explain it but I could just stare at her for days 😂 It’s not like she looks different or anything but I’m still kinda wondering if she got something new done cause idk her face is just so snatched.
  4. I honestly did not think the View interview was that bad. I can see why they were upset of course, but it was what you’d expect for 2005 and their situation. Also, the TOPIC OF THE EPISODE WAS SEX. I didn’t realize that before, and now I think it’s kind of silly that they were so shocked about the sexual questions when the theme was literally sex. The only part I was shocked by was the “dirty old man” moment - I had always wondered what that was about cause Kendra mentions it on the GND episode. The question was “Without the money, wouldn’t you just be a dirty old man?” Yikes! Hef handled it well! I mean, he WAS gross but I didn’t expect them to disrespect him like that to his face. Kind of amazing.
  5. I think the girls did a better job of representing themselves than they think - but I always feel that way in general. I liked when Holly explained why she doesn’t like guys her own age - I often felt the same in my 20s and teens even, and I love that Joy validated them said “Yeah, I can see why you guys like him” rather than making them look stupid like Barbara did when she goes “okay well I don’t get it but hey”because Hef is such an extreme person - his bad qualities are horrifying but I could see how his good qualities would be very attractive. I also thought it was smart of him to say that it’s not so much his money they’re attracted to, it’s the whole Playboy world and lifestyle, and he’s right. I’ve never heard him acknowledge that before. Overall, it was much more interesting and not as tough on the girls as I expected.
What are your thoughts?

2023.06.02 20:47 ArchaicChaos Pneumatology 2. The Paraklétos (John 14:16-17, 26, 15:26, 16:7, 13-14)

John 14:16-17, 26: And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you to the age— the Spirit of truth, whom the world is not able to receive, because it does not see Him nor know. But you know Him, for He abides with you and He will be in you.... But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and will bring to your remembrance all things that I have said to you.
John 15:26: When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes forth from the Father, He will bear witness concerning Me.
John 16:7, 13-14: But I tell you the truth, it is profitable for you that I should go away; for unless I go away the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you... But when He the, Spirit of truth, shall come, He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak from Himself, but whatever He may hear, He will speak. And He will declare to you the things coming. He will glorify Me, for He will take from that which is Mine and will disclose it to you.
Translating "Paraklétos"
The translation above (BLB) uses the term "helper," other translations will variously use: advocate, comforter, intercessor, counselor, etc. These are all translating the Greek word παράκλητος (paraklétos). The word itself is variously translated, not because it is difficult to understand, but because we don't have one solid English word that encompasses everything the Greek word means. This word describes someone who is para, or "close" by another and is in defense of them. This can be in defense in regards to comforting or helping with a problem, but this word is also used in legal defense, someone who advocates on another's behalf as an intercessor before a court or an audience. This is why all of these translations are used. Each does represent a different aspect of what this word means. In context, Jesus is comforting his apostles in these chapters. John 13-17 (and part of chapter 18) are all of Jesus' last night before his trials begin. John 13-16 is the "upper room discourse" where Jesus has his final words with his apostles. Chapters 14-16 are mostly repeating the same few points over and over. Namely, that Jesus will show us the way to the Father through the Spirit which will comfort them after he dies. He will soon die, and they will be comforted by the Spirit of truth. John 17 is called Jesus' "high priestly prayer," this entire chapter is Jesus' prayer to the Father. Chapter 18 is when Jesus is captured and taken to be tried. These statements about the Holy Spirit, Spirit of truth, or paraklétos, are found in the above listed verses in chapters 14-16. Jesus is comforting his apostles by telling them things before he goes to his death. He goes on to explain that he will ask for another comforter to come and comfort the apostles after he is gone. For this reason, the context seems to me to be best translated as "comforter," or "helper," because this Spirit is coming to comfort and help the apostles through the period of time after losing Christ, and as they go one their great commission. For the course of this article, we will generally leave the word untranslated for this reason.
Who is the paraklétos? The Holy Spirit
The paraklétos is the Holy Spirit. "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another paraklétos, that He may be with you to the age—the Spirit of truth... But the paraklétos, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name..." (John 14:16-17, 26). The Holy Spirit is the paraklétos that the Father will send in the name of Jesus. The paraklétos, Holy Spirit, and Spirit of truth are all equivalent terms referring to the same thing. The paraklétos is the Holy Spirit.
The 3 Trinitarian Arguments
In these passages, many Trinitarians will use them to argue three points.
-1 That the Holy Spirit is a person, due to the fact that "he" is used and not "it."
-2 The Holy Spirit is someone other than the Father or Jesus because the Father sends him, Jesus sends him, and the Spirit is "another" being sent. It follows that if the Holy Spirit is a person, and another, then you have a third person of the Trinity here.
-3 The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father due to what is said in John 15:26, the Spirit ἐκπορεύεται (ekporeuetai), or, "goes forth, proceeds from" the Father. In the doctrine of the Trinity, the procession of the persons (how the Son and Spirit come from the Father) advocates that the nature by which the Father generates the Son is through begetting, while the Spirit proceeds, or spirates. Depending on the stance on the filioque, the Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son, or the Father through the Son.
Argument 1, "He"
Looking at argument 1, we find that the Trinitarians do have a particular point here. In Greek, you have grammatical gender. A particular word will have grammatical gender associated with it. Common examples are "logos," or "word," which is grammatically masculine, and "sophia," or "wisdom," which is grammatically feminine. The Greek word for Spirit Πνεῦμα (pneuma), is grammatically neuter. When using a pronoun associated with the subject, the pronouns' grammatical gender must match the subject. So, if we use a pronoun associated with a grammatically feminine word, the corresponding referring pronoun must also be in the feminine gender. Our subject here is "Spirit." Which is grammatically neuter. Therefore, the associated pronoun should be grammatically neuter. However, something different occurs in these passages that we would not expect to see. While referring to a grammatically gendered word, the gender changes to a masculine when the referential word is used.
"But when He (ἐκεῖνος, ekeinos, masculine), the Spirit (Πνεῦμα, Pneuma, neuter) of truth, shall come, He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak from Himself (ἑαυτοῦ, heautou, masculine), but whatever He may hear, He will speak. And He will declare to you the things coming. He (ἐκεῖνος, ekeinos, masculine), will glorify Me, for He will take from that which is Mine and will disclose it to you." (John 16:13-14)
As we can see, while the referential pronouns are referring to a grammatically neuter word, we have them in the masculine. Compare this to Matthew 15:22:
"And behold, a Canaanite woman from the same (ἐκείνων, ekeinōn, neuter) region (ὁρίων, horiōn, neuter) having approached, was crying out saying, 'Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is miserably possessed by a demon.'"
The subject here, being "region," which is grammatically neuter, is paired with the same pronoun used in John 16:13-14 above, but it is also in the neuter gender.
Grammarians say that John is "breaking the rules of Greek grammar" by doing this, and this is for the purpose of referring to a person. The reason why John would change the grammatical gender from a neuter to a masculine is for the purpose of showing that the subject is specifically masculine.
Some Unitarians' Response
Many Unitarians argue that the Holy Spirit is not someone, but, something. It is "God's power," or "an active force." It is a rather impersonal object that's used by God, not a person. If the above argument from the grammar is correct, then this would disprove the Unitarian claim. It is my understanding and opinion that the objection above is correct, and this does disprove the Spirit in this case to be something rather than a person. The Spirit is not "it," but properly, "he." My argument is not against the case made for the grammar, but my argument is against the Unitarians, such as the Jehovah's Witnesses, that claim that the Spirit is nothing more than an impersonal force. Under the study notes in the NWT (New World Translation, the translation made by the Jehovah's Witnesses), they say the following:
Study notes on John 14:16:
When Jesus spoke of the holy spirit, an impersonal force, as a helper and referred to this helper as ‘teaching,’ ‘bearing witness,’ ‘giving evidence,’ ‘guiding,’ ‘speaking,’ ‘hearing,’ and ‘receiving’ (Joh 14:26; 15:26; 16:7-15), he used a figure of speech called personification, that is, referring to something impersonal or inanimate as if it were alive. In the Scriptures, it is not unusual for something that is not actually a person to be personified. Some examples are wisdom, death, sin, and undeserved kindness. (Mt 11:19; Lu 7:35; Ro 5:14, 17, 21; 6:12; 7:8-11) It is obvious that not one of these things is an actual person. God’s spirit is often mentioned together with other impersonal forces or things, further supporting the fact that it is not a person. (Mt 3:11; Ac 6:3, 5; 13:52; 2Co 6:4-8; Eph 5:18) Some argue that the use of Greek masculine pronouns when referring to this “helper” shows that holy spirit is a person. (Joh 14:26) However, Greek grammar requires masculine pronouns when the activity of “the helper” is described since the word for “helper” is in the masculine gender. (Joh 16:7, 8, 13, 14) On the other hand, when the neuter Greek word for “spirit” (pneuʹma) is used, neuter pronouns are used.
Study notes on John 14:17:
spirit: Or “active force.” The Greek term pneuʹma is in the neuter gender and therefore, neuter pronouns are used when referring to it. The Greek word has a number of meanings. All of them refer to that which is invisible to human sight and gives evidence of force in motion. (See Glossary.) In this context, “spirit” refers to God’s holy spirit, which is here called the spirit of the truth, an expression that also occurs at Joh 15:26 and 16:13, where Jesus explains that “the helper” (Joh 16:7), that is, “the spirit of the truth,” will “guide” Jesus’ disciples “into all the truth.”
Study notes on John 15:26:
That one: The Greek demonstrative pronoun e·keiʹnos is in the masculine gender and refers to the helper, which is also in the masculine gender.
Study notes on John 16:13:
that one: Both “that one” and “he” in verses 13 and 14 refer back to “the helper” mentioned at Joh 16:7. Jesus used “the helper” (which is in the masculine gender in Greek) as a personification of the Holy Spirit, an impersonal force, which is in the neuter gender in Greek.
link to the Study Bible of the NWT
In other words, the NWT is arguing that the reason these pronouns are in the masculine, even though they are paired with the neuter "Spirit," is because they refer back to the word "paraklétos," which is grammatically masculine. They are saying that John is not changing Greek grammar to note that the Spirit is masculine to indicate that it is a person, but that these pronouns refer to the masculine word "paraklétos."
Then they explain that the reason why God's "active force" would be called "the paraklétos," and doing things that someone would normally do, not something, such as bearing witness, testifying, hearing, etc, is because this is simply personification. They then give a list of other things in the Bible that are personified to justify the fact that the Bible does this at times.
Their end result is to uphold that the Spirit is an impersonal active force that God uses, and Jesus here reifies the Spirit and speaks of it as if it is a person doing personal things.
Objections to the Jehovah's Witnesses Response
Does their answer fly? I don't think so. First, I am not convinced that a good grammatical argument could be made that the referential pronouns are referring back to "paraklétos" and not "Spirit."
Second, while personification is a common figure of speech in the Bible, it does not justify this to be the case here, it only posits it as a possibility. The notes of their study Bible give no definitive proof of either claim thus far. How do we explain the Spirit as doing all of these things if it is merely a personification? One example they give is that of wisdom, in which it is personified in the statement, "wisdom is proved righteous by what she does." We can explain this metaphor. The results of what someone does from wisdom is the personified action. But with the Spirit, how it comforts, and how it testifies is never explained by these notes. While personification is assumed, we should have an explanation for how these personified metaphors apply in reality. In other words, if we are going to assume metaphorical language, we must have an explanation for the metaphor. Far too much is said in these passages to just assume it to be metaphorical.
Third, they argue that, "God’s spirit is often mentioned together with other impersonal forces or things, further supporting the fact that it is not a person." They argue that the Bible mentions "holy spirit and fire" or having "joy and holy spirit" this emphasizes that the Holy Spirit must not be a person. However, by this same logic, in the passage in question, the Holy Spirit would be proven to be a person. Since the Holy Spirit is mentioned as "going forth from the Father," who they admit is a person, why wouldn't this mean the Holy Spirit is a person here? What about Matthew 28:19, "the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit?" The two things mentioned alongside the Spirit are persons, even by JWs standards, so why should we not use this line of reasoning to assert that the Spirit is a person? Even in the infamous verse in the NWT of Genesis 1:2, where God is mentioned as being with his Spirit, we should then infer that the Spirit is a person. As a side point, this would also disprove their theory on Proverbs 8:22 being about Jesus preexisting as God's wisdom and being created. Why not use the same "personification" argument here with wisdom? Why not argue that because wisdom is mentioned with other things that are not persons, such as the Holy spirit in their own listed example, we should conclude that God's wisdom is not a person in Proverbs 8?
The arguments here are circular, and I do not buy them to be accurate. It is to start with the assumption that the Holy Spirit is entirely impersonal and then to make ad hoc arguments to justify the assumption. When we read in these passages that the Holy Spirit is how the apostles will be comforted, shown truth, and will testify to them, this can not merely be a personification. How does the Spirit comfort and testify to us?
The Holy Spirit, More Than Power
The Holy Spirit is not just a force God uses, nor is it just God's power. Zechariah 4:6 says: "Then he said to me, 'This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.'" Some argue that this "might" and "power" refers only to human might and power. God does not say, "Not by your power, but by my power." The contrast isn't between just human power and divine power. It is between power and God's Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God's power (Luke 1:35) but is not than simply this. The Spirit is also God's word (Psalm 33:6), God's wisdom (Proverbs 8:22-31), God's presence (Psalm 51:11), the angel of his face (Isaiah 63:9-10), God's intercessor (Romans 8:26-27), the mind of God or the communication of it (1 Corinthians 2:11), and much more. To reduce God's Spirit down to just his power is to ignore the entirety of Pneumatology and the many statements about what God's Spirit is and does. How, then, should we define the Spirit to encompass all of what the Spirit does? The Spirit is the nature of God. Compare 2 Peter 1:4, "partakers of the divine nature," with Hebrews 6:4, "partakers in the Holy Spirit." The Holy Spirit communicates everything God wishes to communicate. That is to say, every communicable attribute of God can be communicated by his Spirit. It is his very self. God is Holy, and God is Spirit (John 4:24). The Spirit of God is what he is. God is power. God is love. When we receive his power, his love, when we receive his Spirit.
The Spirit communicates the person of God to us. There is what's called the "transcendence, immanance problem" in philosophy. How can God be transcendental, residing in heaven far above us, and yet omnipresent, here with us? How is he both transcendent and immanent? God is a person, and he resides in heaven. And yet he also resides in us, and we reside in him (John 14:23, 1 John 2:24). The Spirit is how he resides in us. The Spirit of God communicates the person of God to us. His own presence resides in us. This person resides in us by his Spirit.
The Lord is the Spirit
When Jesus was raised from the dead, he received this same Spirit in full (Acts 2:33, 1 Corinthians 15:45, Colossians 2:9). In the same way God resides in heaven and resides in us, so also does the Son by the same Spirit. These are not two different spirits. The Bible says that we only know one Spirit (Ephesians 4:4). Jesus was raised from the dead by God's Spirit, and he himself became clothed in that Spirit. It became his own nature. This is what a new creation is. A man of flesh who is now Spirit. When Jesus was raised from the dead, he says that he has flesh and bone, unlike a spirit (Luke 24:39). Yet, he appears in locked rooms and in a different form (Mark 16:12). He breathes the Holy Spirit onto his apostles (John 20:22). Jesus is the same body that rose up from the tomb, the same body nailed to the cross, with the same holes in his hands and side. Yet, he has the Holy Spirit within, his own breath, his own life source. "The second Adam, Life-giving Spirit" (1 Corinthians 15:45). No longer a body of flesh with life made to be a living soul, but a body with the Spirit of immortality clothing it.
Who is the Paraklétos? Jesus Christ
In the topic passages, we are talking about the paraklétos, who we have clearly identified as the Holy Spirit (which is not a very contested claim). If we read 1 John 2:1, we find: "My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you might not sin. And if anyone should sin, we have a paraklétos with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous One." Jesus Christ is identified as the paraklétos "with the Father." John is talking about the risen Christ and says that he is the paraklétos. "We have (present tense verb) a paraklétos with the Father." Is Jesus, then, the Holy Spirit after resurrection? Yes. "Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all having been unveiled in face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image, from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit.... For we do not proclaim ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord" (2 Corinthians 3:17-18, 4:5). As plainly as it can be, the Lord is Jesus, and Jesus is the Spirit. How many spirits are there? "One Spirit" (Ephesians 4:4). Jesus Christ has been made the Holy Spirit now that he has been resurrected. So, too, will we be "who are being conformed to the same image."
The Holy Spirit "Was" Another
The Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of the Lord, the Holy Spirit, all of these terms refer to one and the same Spirit after Jesus' resurrection. A common objection raised is that the Holy Spirit is something that comes down upon Jesus at his baptism. "I saw the Spirit descend and remain upon him" (John 1:32), and other objections which show a distinction between Jesus and the Spirit. This is not to the point. We, now, receive the Spirit as a down-payment (2 Corinthians 1:21-22, Ephesians 1:14). You put a deposit on something that you do not yet own but have some partial claim to. The Spirit is granted to us as a partial reward for what is to come at resurrection and glorification. The Spirit that we have now is not ours. This is the same for Jesus in his ministry. God gave Jesus the Spirit as a deposit for what he would receive in full at resurrection. The Holy Spirit becomes the Spirit of Christ only after resurrection. To argue that the Spirit is someone or something else during Christ's ministry does not change the facts presented here. Jesus becomes the Spirit. That is the resurrection body Paul speaks of at length in 1 Corinthians 15 (verse 12 ff). A body of glory by the Spirit of the Lord of glory. This is why we are the body of Christ. Because Christ has been raised in a body of Holy Spirit, and when we partake in that Spirit now, which is his body, we become his body. This is truly what Jesus means when we ask us to eat his body, his flesh, and drink the blood of his life. What has the body of Jesus become? Life-giving Spirit.
The Holy Spirit, a Person? Who?
John 14:23 says: "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and we will come to him and will make a home with him." This is just before and after he has introduced the paraklétos to us. When we receive the Holy Spirit, which is the Spirit of the Father and will be the Spirit of the Son, then both the Father and Son are in us through that Spirit in us. One Spirit in us, the presence of both of these persons. 1 John 2:27 says: "And you, the anointing that you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But just as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things and is true and is no lie, and just as it has taught you, you shall abide in Him." What is the anointing we receive? Is it not the anointing of the Holy Spirit? When we are anointed and receive the Spirit, then we abide in Him, and he abides in us.
When people argue about the Holy Spirit being a person in John 14-16, the argument does not prove the Trinity to be true. The question is, "Who is the person of the Holy Spirit?" There is no reason to assume that the Holy Spirit is another person, not the Father or the Son. When "he" abides in us, the Spirit of truth, in these verses, is the resurrected son. He, the risen Lord, will be in us, with us, and testifying to us, comforting us. This is not personification of something. The personal presence of Christ is in us. He is immanent. He is with us, as our paraklétos from the Father.
Argument 2, "Another" Paraklétos
"And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper." Jesus says that the Father will send another. How, then, can I say that this is Jesus? Because the resurrected Jesus is another helper, a different helper than the Jesus in his ministry. This is what they did not and could not yet understand. Paul refers to this resurrected Jesus in the same way. Romans 7:4, "Likewise, my brothers, you also have been put to death to the Law through the body of Christ, for you to belong to another, to the One having been raised out from the dead, so that we should bear fruit to God." We died in Christ, to belong to another in his resurrection. In this context, Paul is talking about the union of Israel to the old law, and he likens this covenant to a marriage covenant. At the death of one party, the covenant is broken. "'Til death do we part." After death, the covenant is broken. There is no law holding the marriage together. Likewise, Israel died to the law when they died together with Jesus in their baptism into his death. Water baptism. We die to ourselves, we die to the flesh, which the law governs over, and we are raised in the Spirit. Spirit baptism. We receive the Spirit of another. The risen Jesus. Have you ever wondered why Acts 13:30-33 says that God had to beget Jesus when he was raised from the dead? Have you ever wondered why Colossians 1:18 and Revelation 1:5 call Jesus the firstborn from among the dead?
Paul also says this in 2 Corinthians 5:16-17: "Therefore from now, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have regarded Christ according to flesh, yet now we regard Him thus no longer. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away; behold, the new has come into being." The Jesus that went to the cross to die was the first comforter. The comforter in the flesh. But this flesh was nailed to cross, and what rose from the grave was another comforter. A new creation. This is why we are also a new creation when we are "in Christ," by dying with him in baptism and raising with him in the same Spirit that raised him from the dead.
"I will send another paraklétos. We have a paraklétos with the Father, Jesus Christ." Another. The resurrected Jesus. A new man, a new body, begotten of God again, life-giving Spirit. Jesus is saying that he will send the Spirit of Christ to us. And when we receive this Spirit of Jesus and the Father, they are abiding in us, at home in us, and we abide in the them in that same Spirit. "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I am coming again and will receive you to Myself, that where I am, you may be also. And you know the way to the place I am going." Where did Jesus go? Was he not ascended to heaven? He isn't talking about going to heaven when you die. He's talking about where you will reside when you receive his Spirit. "Seated with Christ in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 2:6). This is now for those of us who have been filled with the Spirit, and heaven has been opened to us (see Acts 7:55-56). Notice that Paul uses the aorist tense, which is a past tense verb in this verse. God has already, past tense, seated us with Christ in the heavenly places. Paul goes on in verses 8-10 to explain that his audience has already received forgiveness and grace, and they have already been created in Christ for good works. That is to say, they have already received this Spirit. they are seated with Christ already in heaven. Not when they die, not after resurrection, but now. "I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you" (John 14:18). He says this just after he speaks of the paraklétos coming to comfort us. Jesus isn't talking about coming back at his return. This isn't comforting to them. He still has not returned. He's talking about coming back in the Spirit.
John 14:16-17, 26 Explained
John 14:16: "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you to the age—."
Jesus will ask the Father on our behalf as mediator (1 Timothy 2:5), and he will give us another helper. Not the helper they had in the flesh, a new helper in the Spirit. The risen Christ. And this Spirit of Christ will be in us until the end of the age. The Church age. That is until his return.
John 14:17: "the Spirit of truth, whom the world is not able to receive, because it does not see Him nor know. But you know Him, for He abides with you, and He will be in you."
The Spirit of truth, the Holy Spirit, which guides us into all truth. The world does not receive the Spirit of Christ. They have the Spirit of the world. They do not know or see the Spirit we have received. They do not understand or faith. But the apostles know him, the Spirit of truth, because they see the Spirit in Jesus while he is alive. They will have that same Spiritual deposit when they receive him.
John 14:26: "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and will bring to your remembrance all things that I have said to you."
The Father will send in the name or authority of Christ. God will have given Jesus all authority (Matthew 28:18). We receive the Spirit in the name of Jesus. He is our way to the Father. The Spirit will teach us all truth, so that we have no need anyone should teach us (1 John 2:27).
John 15:26 Explained
John 15:26: "When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes forth from the Father, He will bear witness concerning Me."
The Spirit goes out from the Father. It is essentially part of him, which goes forth. But this part of him is given to Jesus, who participates in the shared Spirit. This is what makes us a family. We will all share in what the Father is. The Spirit of God is sent from the Father through Jesus, and that Spirit will bear witness concerning Christ. This means that when we receive that Spirit, we show and display the mind and nature of Christ, and Christ is formed among us. "We will be like him." This is not about a distinct person proceeding forth from the Father's essence as a new and separate center of self-consciousness. The consciousness and personhood of the Spirit are the same consciousness, the same person as he who sends it. If the Father sends his Spirit, the Father is in us. If the Spirit proceeds from Jesus, then Jesus is in us. Since the Spirit becomes a shared Spirit that both are sending, then both are in us by this Spirit. This is why Jesus says that he will send the Spirit from the Father. His Spirit is that which he received from the Father (Acts 2:33), and they both are present in the same Spirit. This is why the Holy Spirit is sometimes very vague in the NT as to which person sends the Spirit. Because it is very much a blended act. Romans 8:9: "You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him." The Spirit, the Spirit of God, and the Spirit of Christ are all interchangeably terms here. All are the same thing.
John 16:7, 13-14 Explained
John 16:7: "But I tell you the truth, it is profitable for you that I should go away; for unless I go away the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you."
If Jesus does not die on the cross, the Spirit can not be poured out to us. Why? Because we can't be a clean and holy temple for the presence of God to reside in if we do not become sinless by dying to our flesh in Christ. If Jesus goes to the Father, he will send the Spirit to us. Because Jesus does not receive the Spirit in a way that he can pour it out upon us unless the Father elevates and raises him. Jesus must be changed (1 Corinthians 15:51).
John 16:13-14: "But when He the, Spirit of truth, shall come, He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak from Himself, but whatever He may hear, He will speak. And He will declare to you the things coming. He will glorify Me, for He will take from that which is Mine and will disclose it to you."
The Spirit guides us, individually, into all truth because each of us individually receives this Spirit personally when we are anointed. "He will not speak from himself, but whatever he may hear, he will speak." The Spirit does not possess a separate consciousness from the Father or Son. The Spirit says nothing from himself, the one speaking in the Spirit is the one who sends the Spirit. What Jesus communicates through his Spirit, this is what we hear. But this paraklétos is the risen Christ. He, the resurrected Jesus, does not speak from himself. He speaks what the Father has told him. "A man who told you the truth I heard from God." Hebrews 1:2 says that in these last days (a reference to the resurrected Christ), God has now spoken to us in a Son. The Son does not speak from himself. He speaks only what he has heard from the Father.
Applicable and Explanatory Context
Other scriptures from this discourse from Jesus illustrate his points.
John 14:2-4: "In My Father’s house there are many mansions. And if not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I am coming again and will receive you to Myself, that where I am, you may be also. And you know the way to the place I am going."
In my Father's house are many mansions. Places of residence in the Father. Receiving the Spirit of Christ is not just about the Father and Jesus being in us, but about us also being in them. Being in them where they are. Seated at God's right hand in heaven. "Seated in the heavenly places."
John 14:11-12: "Believe Me that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me; but if not, believe because of the works themselves. Truly, truly, I say to you, the one believing in Me, the works that I do, also he will do. And he will do greater of these because I am going to the Father. "
We should believe that the Father is in Jesus by his Spirit because of the works that the Father does through Jesus (Acts 2:22). The one believing in Jesus will do "the greater of these works" (not "greater than these). The verse literally says, "the [one] believing in me, the works that I do he also will do and greater of these will he do because I go to the Father." He's talking about us doing the works he did and the greatest of those works. The greatest work Jesus did was love his neighbour and share the gospel. These are the works we are to do "because I am going to the Father." We do the works of God too because we are to receive the Spirit of God just as Jesus did. This is how Jesus demonstrated perfect love. This is how Jesus was guided into the truth of the gospel. Because he received the Spirit of God, and so also will we.
John 14:20: "In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you."
In what day? The day we receive the Spirit of life. We will know Jesus is in the Father because we will experience what that is like. For those of us who have received this Spirit, we know that we are in God, God is in us, and we are in Christ, and he is in us. "In that day," the day you receive the Spirit. We will understand how the Father in him did the works because they will be in us doing their work as well.
John 14:21: "The one having My commandments and keeping them, he is the one loving Me. Now the one loving Me will be loved by My Father. And I will love him, and will show Myself to him."
"I will show myself to him." How? As the paraklétos. Heaven is opened. "I know a man in Christ, fourteen years ago—whether in the body, I do not know, or out of the body, I do not know; God knows—such a man, having been caught up to the third heaven. And I know such a man—whether in the body or out of the body, I do not know; God knows— that he was caught up into Paradise, and he heard inexpressible words, not being permitted to man to speak." (2 Corinthians 12:2-4)
John 14:23-24: "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and we will come to him and will make a home with him. The one not loving Me does not keep My words. And the word that you hear is not Mine, but that of the Father having sent Me."
"We will make our home with him." Think back to, "in my Father's house are many abodes." We receive them in us when we receive their Spirit. The words we hear are that which he received from the Father. "He will not speak from Himself, but whatever He may hear, He will speak." Jesus will teach us the truth from God as the word of God. "In these last days, God has spoken to us in a Son."
John 14:27: "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it fear."
Jesus, here, is our comforter, leaving with peace. Jesus will give us peace once again when he returns to us in the Spirit. As another comforter.
John 14:28: "You heard that I said to you, ‘I am going away and I am coming to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I."
Jesus is going away through death to ascend to the Father. He is coming back in the Spirit to us. Jesus knows his apostles will be sad at his death and his ascension in losing him. But this is how Jesus comforts them. They should rejoice because he is going to come back again to comfort them. "The Father is greater than I." His reason for mentioning this is because the way in which he can comfort and strengthen them in the Spirit he will send and receive from the Father is greater than the way he can comfort them now. They should rejoice at Jesus' leaving them. Not because they want to see him go, but because they will understand that he will come back to them in the Spirit once he does. He must ascend to the Father to receive his Spirit and inheritance to be able to pour out that blessing on us.
John 15:4: "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch is not able to bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither you, unless you abide in Me."
They can abide in Jesus by the Spirit he will pour out upon them.
John 16:16: "A little while and you behold Me no longer; and again a little while and you will see Me."
You will see me. Not someone else named the Spirit of truth, but you will see me. Jesus. We will see him where he is in heaven when we receive him to ourselves in the Spirit.
John 16:19-22: Jesus knew that they were desiring to ask Him, and He said to them, “Do you inquire among one another concerning this, that I said, ‘A little while and you do not behold Me, and again a little while and you will see Me’? Truly, truly, I say to you, that you will weep and will lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be grieved, but your grief will turn to joy. The woman has pain when she is giving birth, because her hour has come; but when she brings forth the child, she remembers the tribulation no longer, on account of the joy that a man has been born into the world. Therefore, you also indeed have grief now; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you."
Their pain will turn to joy when they see him again. He will come back to them as their comforter. They will be grieved when Jesus dies, just as a woman who has a child is in pain during the child birth. But after the pain comes relief and reward. After losing him, they will receive him and see him again, in the Spirit. "No one will take your joy from you." Even when Jesus ascends, they will still rejoice because they have not lost him. They still have him by the Spirit.
John 16:33: "I have spoken these things to you so that in Me you may have peace. In the world, you have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world."
Summary
The paraklétos is Jesus, who is the Holy Spirit in resurrection. When he ascends to the Father, he receives his inheritance to pour this Spirit out upon us. "Therefore having been exalted at the right hand of God, and having received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father, He has poured out this which you are both seeing and hearing" (Acts 2:33). This is when the Spirit is poured out on Pentecost. Jesus pours out the Spirit from God because he has received his promised reward. "We have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous One" (1 John 2:1). Jesus is going to be raised as another. A new creation. In doing so, he will grant us the Spirit he has received in full, yet we only now receive as a deposit of what is to come. We will receive this same Spirit in full when we are changed and raised up to glory. "When he, the Spirit of truth shall come, he will guide you into all truth." That is the Spirit of Christ. The personal presence of Jesus himself.

2023.06.02 20:46 In_Yellow_Clad A Widow's Wrath -- (A One Shot)

A widow on the path of vengeance,
A life taken, her heart in fragments.
She wanders through the dark of night,
Her thoughts consumed with deadly might.
No mercy shown, her aim is true,
She'll take revenge, see it through.
With each step she grows more bold,
Her heart beats fast, her grip is cold.
Her enemies beware her wrath,
Their fate is sealed, there's no escape path.
Her sword is sharp, her aim is sure,
No one can stop her, the gods assure.
The widow on her quest for retribution,
Will not rest until there's restitution.
Her mind is focused, her heart is strong,
Her foes will pay the price, no right or wrong.
In the end, justice will be served,
The widow's heart, though broken, will be preserved.
For she has triumphed in her quest,
And now can lay her soul to rest.
-The Legend of the Shade
-----------------
One would expect that a planet named Ilara would be some sort of paradise, or at the very least, pleasant to experience. This could not be further from the truth. Ilara is an arid, hot and dusty mess of a world. What little surface water there is has seen settlements of all kinds pop up around it, and considering the sort of planet it is, it’s no wonder that these oases have become dens of lawlessness.
Well, most of them have, a few still manage to be civilized, but to paraphrase a good man, many are ‘“Wretched hives of scum and villainy”, and it is one of these places where this tale takes place.
Nefaria’actul’oproni, or as the citizens called it, Murkville, was not a happy place. It wasn’t particularly nice looking either, the buildings all worn and smooth thanks to the repeated sandstorms that like to roll on through. There were scorch marks and even streaks of dried blood in all the colors of the rainbow on the walls in some places. And yet, for all its shittiness, people still lived there. They didn’t like it, but the next nearest and far more civilized town was much too far away for any of them to make it without suffering some form of horrible accident, attack by the wildlife or something else along those lines. So they stayed, and they endured.
Murkville was also under the control of the crime syndicate calling themselves the Set’ruthal, a brutal organization that specializes in drugs, human/xenos trafficking and prostitution, none of which was mutually exclusive in the slightest. They were scum of the highest order and they held Murkville in their iron grip, extorting the populace for ‘protection’ money and the like. All terribly cliche, but such is the way of the world.
It was a dark and blissfully cool night at the local saloon, and Scaszer - A Solvoih, who are what humanity would call an anthropomorphized snake with legs - was enjoying a drink with his friends after a long and hard day of work. His two friends, a Khik or vaguely like a tall dog person and an Almell, which humans describe as an elf with feathers, sat with him. They were all simply enjoying the cool air and the good drinks, one of the few actual luxuries in this gods forsaken dump of a town.
Flardryn - the Almell - was the first to break the silence that lingered over all of us.
“So, have you heard the rumors?” He asked, his voice a touch chirpy at times, but today not so much. Scaszer and Deikx the Khik both looked at him curiously, then at one another before they shook their heads. Flardryn grinned and leaned forwards, lowering his voice to a whisper only we could hear.
“Rumor is, someone’s sticking it to the Set’ruthal. Blowing up outposts, caches, and just generally causing chaos.” He said, Scaszer and Deikx looking rather disbelieving.
“What a load of ketch, if that were true don’t you think we’d have noticed? Ketch, if that were true this whole place would be worse than it was, they’d be taking out all that anger on us instead of the person causing the trouble.” Deikx snorted, shaking his head in a manner that had his droopy ears flopping about.
“Yeah, you know how they get when things go wrong. We pay the price.” Scaszer said, Flardryn huffing.
“But it is true! They say a human is causing all this fuss.” He protested, and that gave the other two pause. Now that sounded pretty plausible, when humans wanted to break something, they always seemed to do so in spectacular fashion. So one human causing such a ruckus wasn’t unheard of, but still it was only a rumor.
“Alright then, tell us about this human.” Scaszer said, and Flardryn looked overjoyed at the prospect of doing so, leaning in even closer to speak.
“So, rumors say this human holds a personal grudge against the Set’ruthal. They say the syndicate killed the humans family and nobody would bring them to justice, so the human decided to do it themselves.” That was honestly not that surprising. Humans love a good revenge arc. “Anyway, they started small, or so the rumors say. Just some low level scum going missing, then working their way higher and higher up the ladder. It’s got the Set’ruthal scared but they don’t wanna show it, keep up appearances you know?”
Scaszer and Deikx nodded, both of them fully understanding the concept of saving face. But this did seem a little far fetched.
None of them really noticed the human that entered the saloon, a long, dusty and tattered coat draped over their shoulders, heeled boots that gently thumped against the floor and a wide brimmed hat on the top of their head. Nobody noticed them save the bartender when the human sat at it, nor did they hear the softly spoken request for a drink from this human.
What they did notice was the very loud group of Set’ruthal enforcers, who were off duty at this time, wandering into the saloon not five minutes later, cussing and generally being obnoxious. The establishment fell silent, fearful eyes tracking the enforcers as they kicked the occupants of a table out of their chairs and claimed it for themselves. Nobody moved a muscle to challenge them, they all knew what would happen if they did.
The human however, hardly seemed perturbed as they glanced over a shoulder, the long ponytail of red hair shifting with the motion. It didn’t take the Enforcers long to notice the human, nor the fact that the human was a female. There was a very good reason why there were no humans in Murkville, and the Set’ruthal were that very reason, as the men tended to get slaughtered and the women… well, best to not talk about that.
“Well well, looks like we have a newcomer!” One of the enforcers said, grinning maliciously. The Set’ruthal were almost exclusively occupied by members of a species known as the Bholkal. To humans, they were very large armadillos, with the same amount of teeth as a shark and generally they all had very bad attitudes. “And a human at that, it’s our lucky night lads! Seems we’ll be having some lively entertainment.”
They all stood and the trio of friends all felt a bit of bile rise in their throats, feeling for the poor human who had wandered into the wrong town. But the human did the most curious thing, and perhaps the most stupid thing as well. They ignored the enforcers and instead flagged down the bartender, who looked to be quivering in fear.
“Could I just have the bottle, please and thank you.” The human said, her voice light and lilting, but with a touch of a Terran subcultural accent, what they would call Southern. The bartender was quick to acquiesce, and a bottle of some alcoholic beverage was placed before her. She was quick to take it up, spinning the cap off it with a well practiced motion. She didn’t even care that the cap was sent flying off into the unknown as a result, she instead focused on chugging the contents of the bottle while turning on her stool to face the enforcers.
The enforcers didn’t look too pleased and everyone else all wanted to look away from what was going to happen next, but found themselves transfixed.
“Aren’t you a pretty thing, why don’t you come play with us girly.” The lead enforcer, a particularly nasty fellow and coincidentally the son of the Set’ruthal patriarch, grinned as he reached out a claw to stroke her cheek. Instead of responding verbally, her head tilted back as she continued her drinking, a single finger raised to single him to wait. He didn’t really appreciate this, as he moved with such speed that nobody really knew what happened till the bottle had been cut into pieces, the contents splashing partially onto her and the floor while the glass shattered on impact.
She stared at the broken and empty bottle with a look of exasperation, before her ice blue eyes shifted their focus onto the heir apparent.
“Alright, I’ll play with you.” She said softly, and the enforcer grinned, leaning in to begin his violations, only for all of us to hear a sound we were most assuredly not expecting.
It was the sound of railgun coils spinning up.
Before anyone could react, there was a sharp sound of metal on metal, followed by wet squelching, as nearly every soul tracked the arm that sailed through the air and landed in a bloody heap well across the room. Then came the screaming, as the enforcer looked at the stump where his arm had been, and the ancient looking revolver that had removed it. The gun shifted, angling lower, the same whine repeating and now he was missing a leg as well.
The saloon burst into motion as his screaming intensified, his buddies all surging towards the human who stood in a flash and used their foot to hook onto the rungs of the stool she’d only just been occupying, sending it sailing straight into the face of an enforcer even as she took aim and fired again, turning another's head into a fine purple mist. She became a blur, firing and slashing with the broken bottle. She painted the room with their blood and they never even laid a claw on her.
It was over in an instant, the human standing there and breathing heavily, even as she watched the first enforcer claw his way out the door on his stomach. With a deep breath she turned, placed a stack of credits on the bar and walked after the fleeing enforcer, all while reloading her weapon.
Without much hesitation all present who had merely been spectators scrambled from their hiding places and to the windows, watching as she stepped over the prostrate being and pressed the barrel of her gun to the back of his head.
“D-Do you know who I am? Who my father is!?” The being wailed, and the human nodded.
“I do, that’s why I’m here, why I’m doing this. Because you took everything I ever held dear from me, and now… now I have nothing left to lose.” She murmured, and the alien grinned, purple blood oozing from his mouth.
“You know you’re gonna die right? We’re gonna take our time with you, make it hurt!”
“Perhaps, but here’s the thing,” She kicked him over onto his back, a position of great shame to a Bhokal. “There’s room in my grave for you too.” She hissed, and they all expected her to end him right then and there. But she didn’t. Instead she drew a knife and smiled in a sweet manner, yet instead of the comfort that such a smile should have brought, they felt nothing but a chill run down their spines (or spine equivalents.)
“Now, you’re gonna be a messenger to dear old dad, so you best listen close, don’t want to miss a single word.”
Those watching turned away, some getting sick at what she did next, the screams echoing down the street.
Ten Hours Later
The plantation on the outskirts of Murkville was an opulent affair, reminiscent of ancient Terran plantations as well, which is what it had been based off of coincidentally. It was here where the end of this story shall take place, and it shall go down in history as a pivotal point for Ilara. A night of blood and death, of vengeance secured and the end of a dynasty.
It began, with the sound of someone scratching at the door, a sound that was entirely unheard of in this place. When a guard was ordered to investigate, they found only the mangled son of Patriarch Bilharzia bleeding - not nearly as profusely as he had been earlier - on the stoop. He was quickly moved to a secure room and his father was livid, bellowing up a storm of vile hatred for whomever had done this to his son.
When eventually he calmed down enough to not only hear himself think, but to hear others when they talked to him, he was informed that there was a camera attached to the front of his son's uniform. He quickly snatched it up, peering directly into the camera as a snarl ripped from his throat.
“I don’t know who you are, or why you’re doing this, but you’ve made a very grave mistake! I will hunt you down, I will tear everything you love and hold dear apart! I will make you beg for death and I shall not give it! DO YOU HEAR ME! I SHALL NOT GIVE IT!” He roared into the camera, unsure if whomever was watching could even hear him. But apparently they could.
“You already have. Now it’s my turn. An eye for an eye.” Came the sibilant response, and that’s when they all heard it. A gentle beeping coming from nearby. Bilharzia turned towards the source, only to find his son awake yet again, and looking fearfully at him. He couldn’t speak, whomever had mutilated him had not stopped at his limbs, but had removed his ability to speak, to warn them of the danger he presented.
It clicked in Bilharzia’s head that the beeping was only getting faster, and just as it became a solid tone he bolted from the room. He was fortunate to have done so, his son and the others however… not so fortunate. The high explosive charge that had been embedded into his son detonated, blowing a good chunk of the west wing entirely to pieces.
As Bilharzia raised his head from the ground where he’d landed thanks to the blast, he caught sight of missiles streaking up into the air, only to explode mid-flight and rain down phosphorus and napalm over the fields of product he maintained, setting them ablaze. Heavy gunfire sounded, the rattling of a very large chaingun booming through the silence of a beautiful evening, raking rounds over his vehicles and depots. Everything of value save the servants quarters was put to the torch, and he could only watch.
From the smoke strode a figure, one he instantly recognized. He was not ignorant of human history, their conflicts Shumon Synergy or the Valvak Despoilers, he knew a human warmech when he saw one. And this one was particularly well known.
Before his home stood the warmech known as the Black Widow though its official name was 22-39 Ward. The body was painted black, a single red hourglass on the chest partially hidden by some sort of tactical covering that closely resembled a poncho. It was a monster of a machine, and there was only one person who had ever piloted it. A woman who was known as Shade, or that was what her foes had called her. To her peers, to her family, her name was Myra Fields. A war hero a thousand times over, a loving wife and mother of four.
A widow, whose family had been ripped from her by Bilharzia’s very hand.
The warmech launched another salvo, striking at targets that went unseen behind the manor, and his men, his loyal men, rushed out to face the beast of metal and wrath, only to be gunned down without mercy or hesitation. And then the chassis opened, and out stepped his worst nightmare.
A woman in black, with blood red hair, dropped from the pilots cradle and landed with nary a sound. Bilharzia made to flee through the house, but the fire caused by the explosion within it had weakened the structure, a burning beam landing upon his legs and pulverizing the bones. He cried out as he was stopped dead in his tracks, and from where he lay he could see her approaching slowly, patiently.
Finally she stepped into the burning home, the smoke filled wind catching her coat and making it flap. She knelt before him, not a single emotion on her face. She studied him for a moment, then looked at the beam and the fire which engulfed the house before nodding. She didn’t say a word, not even in response to his begging, his pleas for mercy. She had none to give, none to show, and so she stood and left, leaving him to his fate.
Finally she spoke, even as she walked past the waiting warmech.
“Light the fire, Ward.” She said, and the machine nodded, launching more incendiary missiles high into the air, and watching as the payload rained down on the home. And just like that, it was over, a syndicate which had existed for five hundred years, reduced to ashes. The machine nodded again, then turned and trailed after its mistress.
Four days later
Myra crouched before a series of headstones, brushing the sand off them carefully and with reverence. She didn’t know what to say, didn’t know what to do. But looking at them sparked something inside her, a purpose.
“It’s done… They won’t take anyone else anymore, I made sure of that.” She whispered. “Now… Now I think I’ll see what I can do to help make the galaxy a better place. There are more out there like me, who need their own closure. More like them that need to be brought to justice. If I can do even just a little bit… Then that’ll be enough for me.”
She rose, dusting the sand off her knees and took one last look at the graves of her family.
“I love you all.” She murmured, turning and clambering up into the cockpit of her warmech. As it sealed she placed her hat upon a hook, and turned them both towards the horizon, and the star port beyond it.
“What are we going to do now, Commander?” Ward asked, and she smiled, giving one of his consoles a gentle pat.
“Now… Now we’re going to do what we do best. Think you’re up for it?”
“Affirmative.”
“Good boy. Let’s go kill some bad guys.”
And so, the two walked off into the great unknown, looking to bring justice to those that required it.

Still not over it
I’m still not over how they did Bonnie but definitely not over how they did Rudy. Was he a shit parent yes but he didn’t deserve to die the way he did. Also he died and they just move on. We don’t see Bonnie grieving her last living parent. Like she was just supposed to move on and do spells. Elena and Caroline both were given grace to grieve when their parents died but Bonnie wasn’t given that same curtesy and I HATE IT!!

2023.06.02 20:42 FordMFingRANGER Fortnight 7 media key review

Video Game Review 7 keys
Title: Fortnight
Publisher: Epic Games
Genre: Battle royale
ESRB Rating: T for Teen
My Rating: 4.5
Primary Audience: younger audiences
Year of Release: 2017
Platform: PC, Mac, X box 360, X box 1, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, IOS, and Android
Trailer:
Fortnight is an animated 3rd person battle royale style shooter video game. Battle royale means you enter a lobby with a set number of people and you fight to see who is the last person alive. This is a very cool concept because it is more realistic than shooter games where you keep respawning because if you die you lose all of your progress which makes your life in the game more valuable. The aspect of Fortnite that differentiates itself from other battle royale games is that in this game you have the ability to build. This means that you can collect resources and build walls and ramps to help protect yourself from enemies or to provide cover as you attack other players. In Fortnight the game starts where 100 players parachute down onto an island. Once you land the players have to find weapons and collect building materials to use to survive. The game also has a way to gather all of the players left in the game to one spot so the game does not take forever. “The storm” is the name of this in game characteristic, It is a poisonous cloud that drains health that slowly closes in on the island forcing players to move towards the end location on the map. The end location is different in every game so not to create a predictable advantage for players.
The First Media Key: Balance
The first media key of balance applies to Fortnight because of the even playing field that the game has established. This game does a great job of providing an equal possibility to all players for winning. Because all the players start out with nothing and have the ability to go wherever they want on the map all the players have a chance at winning if they have the right skills. The game is also balanced in the sense that the game is constantly evolving through changes in the map, new cool weapons that they add to the game. Every few months or so the game developers change the map or add in new features to keep the game interesting and exciting.
The Second Media Key: Attitude Awareness
The second media key of attitude awareness applies to the game Fortnight in two different ways. The first message is survival of the fittest. If you are skilled at the game, you can turn any battle around and find victory in this game. Because of this message that the game conveys through how it is set up has let to players becoming incredibly good at this game. The second way that attitude awareness can be applied in this game is through recognizing what the game is advertising. The game often incorporates heroes from popular movies and TV serries into the game. The game has had refences to Star Wars, Attack on Titan, My Hero Academia, Batman, John Wick, the Avengers, Dune and many others. While by having these popular characters in the game they are helping themselves they are also simultaneously helping the media they are promoting.
The Third Media Key: The Dignity of the Human Person
It is difficult to argue that the third media key the dignity of the human person is upheld in this game due to the fact that the whole purpose of the game is to kill all of the other players in the game. This game can be extremely competitive which makes winning feel awesome but losing very painful. Because of the difficulty of this game players spend a vast majority of their time on the game losing which can cause players to be filled with rage and anger. That being said I believe this game to be harmless due to the animated and very fake look of the game. The game is purposely not designed to resemble the real world closely.
The Fourth Media Key: Truth‐Filled
Truth filled the fourth media key can be applied to Fortnight in the sense that the players are able to evaluate their opponent’s skill levels through how they play the game. The main sign of an opponent’s skill is their ability or lack of ability to build. Players that are able to build quickly and fluently are often the winners of games. Another way that this game can incorporate the fourth media key is through teamwork. Players can join teams with their friends and work together in order to win the battle royale. This communication and team work can relate to real world applications and friendships.
The Fifth Media Key: Inspiring
The fifth media key inspiring applies to Fortnight in the sense that the game teaches perseverance. Fortnight is an extremely difficult game to win that requires a great deal of skill obtained through practice. It is very common for a more skilled player then you to run up on you and absolutely demolish you. The frustration caused by this inspires and motivates players to continue to train their skills with the hope of someday being that player absolutely recking other players.
The Sixth Media Key: Skillfully Developed
The sixth media key skillfully developed doe greatly apply to this game. Since its release in 2017 this game has been consistently at the top of the charts. This game has even morphed into a sort of social ranking for young boys where if you are good at the game, you are cooler. The game developers have done an incredible job of creating the world of fortnight through the awesome graphic art used and the fun weapons some biased off real weapons and others entirely made up. This game has done an excellent job of adapting and creating now game modes and changing the battlefield layout. There are even memes about how when Fortnite incorporates video games characters from other games that the Fortnight version is better then the original.
The Seventh Media Key: Motivated by and Relevant to Experience
The seventh media key applies to fortnight is the sense that players are motivated by the hard goal of achieving victory and the glory that is associated with it. When the game was first getting popular it was common for players to actually post pictures of their wins on social media because it was deemed such a hard game to beat. Players are also motivated to do better then they did in the previous game they played trying to get closer to first place.
Fortnight is an extremely challenging but fun game to play. Personally, now I am not a huge gamer and prefer to spend my time outdoors or watching TV so when I play the game my skills are quite low which makes it less fun. In the past however I was pretty average and had a lot of fun playing the game with my friends. I think this is a very well-designed game and would give it a 5 out of 5 even though it is not my favorite game because I am not very good at it. The reason I am giving this game such a high score is because I can recognize how creative and well managed this game truly is and how awesome it is for people that are actually good at it. I believe this game is appropriate for ages 10 mainly because I don’t think kids younger then 10 should be spending a ton of time on video games but that is just my personal opinion.

2023.06.02 20:42 Southern_Cost3920 How to understand the roles of SAHM/wife and breadwinner/husband

My husband and I seem to be having repeated arguments that I think have the same root cause: we have different opinions about our roles, which leads us both to have certain expectations. And then if those expectations aren’t met, one of us ends up disappointed/angry.
A little about us: I’m the SAHM to seven kids (age infant-15). For many years, I was doing all the housework/childcare/homeschooling because my husband was deployed. In a way, it was an easy set up. If there’s childcare or housework that needed to be done, I did it because there was no other option. Then my husband got a very demanding civilian job. There were times he didn’t even see the kids because he was working crazy hours. When he was home for one day on weekends, he was happy to bbq, do the food shopping or take the kids to the pool but during the week it wasn’t much different than a deployment. Basically, we both worked our tails off at our respective jobs.
Now we have a different lifestyle. He works from home and has very reasonable hours. Our kids now go to school, decreasing my load significantly since I’m not homeschooling. So now have a chance to figure out how to be great partners.
But we are struggling. And some of the things he says makes me think we aren’t on the same page as far as the proper understanding of our roles.
In short- he says ‘as the breadwinner, I could say that I am responsible for zero housework/chores and that would be acceptable.’ He also says that any time I ask him to help out, he does it is a gift. Anything he does around the house ‘for me’ is a gift. His main argument is that I don’t bring in money. So if I can’t help him with his job, anytime he’s helping me with mine should be considered extra. I don’t think I ask for too much. I like my role as a homemaker and I think I do a pretty great job. And I love my role as a mom! I’m feeling discouraged in my role as a wife with these kinds of opinions being repeated any time we disagree about housework.
As Catholics, what’s the proper understanding of this SAHM/breadwinner dynamic. I’d love to hear your thoughts or any resources you think might help.

2023.06.02 20:41 lurebat That one scene in The Hunger Games and we used to see it

Intro

It's been more than 10 years since the first Hunger Games movie. I can't say that the franchise has stayed on my mind too much, after the oversaturation of the genre and the way it ended.
Maybe it's the prequel coming out, but that one scene popped into my mind and stayed there.

The Scene

I'm talking about the scene where everyone trains for the hunger games, and the elites are watching them from a high window.
Katniss, during her showcase, shoots an arrow right through the high window, hitting an apple right next to the rich people.
We don't see the immediate aftermath, and it's never really mentioned again - Katniss isn't banned from the games, isn't punished, the movie just moves on.

The Reaction

I very vividly remember the reaction for the scene, at least my side of the internet - smugness.
At that point in time, it was all about being better than the “normal” people - hating Twilight without reading it, being a smug atheist, etc
So the Cinema Sins Dingers and YMSes of the world had a field day over this movie.
And sure, the movie was flawed, and nobody can say that the rock makeup scene wasn't silly as fuck, but I think the movie didn't deserve all of that.
That scene in particular got dinged to all hells - why didn't they have a glass, why were they even in the same room as the teens, why wasn’t Katniss punished?
They just want to show how of a badass female katniss is they don't care about precious logic.
I remember that I myself mentioned this scene when talking about the movie with my friends.
And just the other day, I thought about this scene again and it became obvious.

What I think now

I think it's a pretty good scene.
Hunger Games is very much about class division, it isn't subtle.
The games themselves are supposed to be sickengly normal - we're at the 74th iteration, and everyone just accepts it as part of life. Just one of those things you have to do once a year.
For the colonies(?) it's also their only chance for class mobility, people see it as a gift rather than a burden.
It's about rich people tricking the poor into fighting each other rather than them, getting scraps while the rich live frivolously.
There are regions who specifically train people for the games, other see it as a contribution, but even those who hate it treat it as something that just exists, rather than perpetrated, something that the elites chose to do and maintain.
So far, I haven't said anything groundbreaking, it's only subtext in the strictest sense of the word, I'm sure everyone at the time got most of it even if not in these exact terms.
So back to the scene. Katniss shoots at them and there is no glass.
The whole point is that there is no glass. They don't need it.
The whole point is that they can sit in front of people they condemned to die, without any protection, give them weapons, and they aren't afraid, they don't even think of the possibility of damage.
It's the implicit rules, people are seeing them as judges, the rivals are the other kids.
The only thing that separates them is not something physical - it's an idea.
I remember people saying that the scene was dumb, since "they're probably gonna die anyway so they might as well do it", but the answer is the opposite - their only chance to live is to play by the rules (not to mention collective punishment for their people).
So why did Katniss do it? because that's kind of her thing. not being fearless or badass or to borrow a "girlboss", but to show her strategy - not to play by the rules.
The whole point of her character is to show the flimsiness of the games, and by extension, the system.
By hiding instead of fighting, by being compassionate, and at the end literally cheating and talking directly to the game runners, she constantly challenges them and forces them to bend the rules. Change the immutable hunger games.
And that starts with noticing that the glass isn't really there, and shooting though it.
Why wasn't she punished? maybe she was, we don't really know. but they can't kill her, because they also have to pretend that there are rules. Not having her in the games after being announced is a no no.

Am i just stupid?

Now despite all of the discussion, I've never seen anyone give this interpretation before. Probably again, it was my circle and the fact I was much younger.
But this isn't some hot take, it's just taking the message of the movie and applying it to that one scene.
Maybe it was the "logic rules" idea of the time. I mean we got the whole Titanic door debate back then. Though that's kind of the opposite when you think about it - in Titanic everyone got the point of the scene - the idea that one of them must make a sacrifice, but the debate was more about the prop or the positioning of the characters.
Here it feels that the logistics of the scene are possible, but nobody gets why it's there.
Or maybe, just maybe, they all did. There is always this thought that I'm just an idiot.
That all along everyone got the scene, in all of the levels I do now and maybe even deeper, and they were always just discussing it at higher level I never got. Maybe. But I feel like my perspective is more nuanced than it was 10 years ago, and that's a positive for me.

What's next?

What do you think? Have you also gone through this change? Are there scenes like that sit in your mind, unfairly hunted by pop culture?
