2023.06.02 20:35 rinamy Short codes / SMS issues - thinking of switching to Fi.

Currently on T-mobile, thinking of switching to Fi to add my mom who wants to use an iPhone 14 so I'm concerned about issues I've been lurking on the subreddit.
How common is the short codes problem (people not able to receive short codes like MFA from banks/credit cards/etc) and is there an actual easy resolution? Is it for all phones or specifically for phones that aren't officially supported, like iPhones?

I was reading people are also having porting problems with T-Mobile. She wants to keep her current number so I don't want to risk being unable to do that for her (number lost in limbo like some posts here have said).

Anything else to be concerned about for an iPhone user? Mom not very tech savvy and might freak out about small issues so I need to be prepared/aware of anything that might cause day-to-day problems. She doesn't live near me so I'd have to do remote support for her.

2023.06.02 20:34 enviousbuckeye What cashback VISA card can I use at Costco and as a catch-all? Preferably do not want a Costco Citi Visa

Essentially, I have a PNC Visa card that has $50 minimum redemptions for cashback that I used to use as a catch all card. It is my oldest account I am the primary holder of (6.5 years), but it has become mediocre on benefits with 1.25% cashback. I want to throw it in a drawer with a recurring payment on it and forget it. I recently moved to an area with a Costco 3 years ago and shop there often. My gas goes onto my Verizon card for 4% back already, so getting a Costco Citi is not attractive to me for gas. Also, I am not a fan of the idea of getting my cashback once per year waiting in line at the store, I assume it would be mayhem lol.
My Apple Card is my 2% catchall for mobile purchases, but it is a MasterCard. My SavorOne is also a MC. Is there a Visa card you would recommend?

Thanks in advance!!

2023.06.02 20:34 LoonyMoonie Air Canada refund processed - never received in Credit Card

Back in January 2023, I received from Air Canada a "Refund Receipt" as a result of unused paid fare. They said it would take up to two billing statements to add the credit back into my account.
I filed a ticket on April; refund was never received by my bank. Ticket was finally answered today -- they say that refund was processed on mid-January, to credit card ended in ABCD. End of story.
Here's the first red flag -- this credit card does not exist. The plane ticket was paid entirely with vouchers, with ABCD being the voucher code. So I really don't know to what credit card they refunded to (Air Canada never asked for any information). I'm trying to get back in touch (by e-mail) with the agent who replied to my ticket; no answer so far.
It's possible that refund is being sent to an already closed credit card. I called my bank; they said that if that was the case, transaction should have been rejected. In any case, my bank says that there's no investigation they can do without further information from Air Canada (ARN number, or documentation); information that Air Canada has yet to provide.
Should I open another ticket and wait 2 more months for a reply, or should I pick up the phone/another means of communication instead? Does anyone else have a similar experience, where they've been able to successfully get the refund back from Air Canada?

2023.06.02 20:29 nickygee123 Politicians wanting to ban abortions are not banning them because they think it's ethically wrong.

Im a millennial in my 30s, I have a very large and diverse groups of friends and acquaintances. I can count on one hand the number of my friends that have children. As our generation ages, we will be passing off "our work" to a dwindling population. When millennial retire and get put out to pasture, there will be less people in the work force to conduct business. I think that abortions are being banned because American politicians are trying to sustain our population. However, I believe that we live in a world of manufacture division, and all the religious reasons are utter horseshit and I also think that progressives are on board with banning abortions as well. It doesn't mater what you think of the left or the right. Both sides are incredibly intelligent and know how to manufacture an emotion out of their constituents and will continue to do so to continue the illusion that your vote matters.
Also war is always on the horizon with us Americans. I think that after watching over 200,000 Russian soldiers turn into fertilizer in less than 2 years by a vastly weaker army, America needs some troops to combat China.
Anyway in short. If abortions are illegal a lot more unplanned pregnancys happen. Those kids grow up and become the working class of America to keep the machine going. (In theory)
Disclaimer: I'm not a fucking scholar. Just a regular person trying to make sense of the world i live in. I'm open to different point of views and actually encourage them. Im intrested in knowing what other people think.
Also I'm a conservative but believe abortions should be legal at a federal level.
K bye.

2023.06.02 20:28 healthierhealing I (27F) was unknowingly the affair partner to a man (35M) I met overseas. When he came clean I forced him to tell his wife, and now I feel terrible.

Two weeks ago, I was in South America visiting some friends. My first night there, my friend and I are walking into the hotel to go to bed and as I pass the lobby bar I notice a this man sitting by himself at one end. We make eye contact and I tell my friend I’m going to stay up for a while and try to meet him. I go to the bar and send him a drink, he picks it up with his left hand I note that he’s not wearing a ring and text that info to my friend who is like “yes!! Go for it!!” I walk over to talk to him and was in his room within 10 minutes. He was prepared. Had wine, condoms, body hair was very manicured. After we did the deed and we’re laying there cuddling and chatting, I make a stupid joke and say “does your wife know you’re with me right now?” to which he just laughs and says there’s no wife.
I end up spending the night and when I leave the next morning, we exchange numbers. We were both traveling to Europe later that week, each for work, but me to Italy and he to Spain. He follows me on instagram, no sign of a partner, and we start chatting all day every day there and on WhatsApp. After 9 days he convinces me to come stay with him in spain after wrapping up my work. I add two nights to my trip and way too much in flights to go stay with him. So Tuesday of this week I fly to spain, we go to dinner together and he is sweet as anything. I feel so into him and on Wednesday spent nearly the whole day in bed with him with some intermittent walks where we had deep talks about our lives and emotions. I asked him if he’s ever been married, had kids, had a pet, has he ever cheated on someone. He seemed so genuine when he said no.
Wednesday evening we’re at dinner and he tells me he’s tired of life on the road. He says he wants a real relationship and feels sad that he’s met me and can’t spend more time with me and that he wants to switch his career and is having a third-life crisis. I felt so sad for him! Smh. I was holding his hand across the table and reminding him that it was because of his transient nature that we could meet and reunite so quickly in the first place, and I offer to fly out more in the future to continue visiting him. He’s also due to be in my city in the US (he’s English) in October and I offered for him to stay with me. He acted like this wasn’t enough and I felt bad for him that he seemed to have such strong feelings (lol).
Wednesday night he slept fitfully and I kept waking up to him clinging to me and it was frustrating. I woke up yesterday morning early to catch my flight home and he’s laying in bed looking sad, then he says “do you normally get into men’s heads this much?” And he keeps telling me that I’m trouble and it was making me feel strange. He says I’m better at not getting attached than he is and I said I just wasn’t sad because I knew it wasn’t the end, it was just the beginning (LOLLL). He walked me out to my cab and kissed me goodbye and kept in touch all day long.
I get home yesterday evening and he video calls me and for a moment I thought I noticed a ring on his left hand and immediately asked about it. He laughs it off and I let it go. I was showing him my apartment and he comments on how my apartment is such a metaphor for who I am because it seemed like a lonely place and then he called me broken and said I’m afraid to be emotionally available and started asking if my ex husband hurt me so badly that I couldn’t trust people anymore. I rejected this psychoanalysis and said that while yes, I am independent, I have lots of friends and a pet and I don’t feel lonely. He started talking more about how attached he felt to me and I told him that maybe he feels lonely because he’s on the road touring all the time, and I asked who his best friend is. He started to cry and hung up on me.
I felt terrible and like maybe I hurt his feelings and I apologized to him over text and asked if he’d like some space. He sent back a weird cryptic message that said
i am a douche... and i think i know that so that why its hard for me to hear. I have met you who's awesome, your zest for life and drive is inspiring and refreshing, but i also have not been truthful. My actions over the last week could/will hurt people... and i dont want that to happen... i dont want you to hurt, or feel hurt, or be depressed or hate me, but i also dont want to hurt those who i should be faithful to. My loneliness is damaging to everyone around me... i feel like i have been more authentically me whilst simultaneously lying through my teeth and that is the "problem". I feel trapped between what i know i should do and what feels right. And even whist writing this... which is so hard to do and admit Im a douche... all i want to do it turn on the camera, look at your face and could happily sit in silence looking at you in awe of your passion for your dog magnets and pens... and yet my being dishonest with you will hurt and damage you, it would certainly damage my home relationships and i don't want anyone to hurt. My inability to be fulfilled and my now newly recognised acknowledgment of being lonely then make me question everything about my life.... Im sorry... so sorry
I immediately replied “are you married?” To which he said “yes”. I was a bit crushed, disappointed, creeped out, and massively angry for his wife. I was also triggered to the emotions of relationships I’ve been in where I was cheated on. I sent him a few explosive messages and told him to grow up and stop feeling sorry for himself.
I couldn’t sleep all night after this and I ended up looking him on Facebook. Yep. Wife of ten years. Beautiful wedding photos. 5 year old son, she stays home to care for the child while deadbeat dad traverses the world fucking women who are 8 years younger than him. Finally at 5 in the morning I get out of bed and realized I had a UTI. I start thinking about the possibility of him giving his wife an STD. I’m completely seething at this point. I unblock him and tell him that either he is telling her or I am and it’s happening today. He starts pleading with me and doesn’t acknowledge her emotions once, just that he’s going through so much, he didn’t realize he was lonely until I said it, he’s going to change and be better. I was emotionally dead to all of his pleading until he finally messaged her the following:
im so sorry... I have cheated on you... I have made the biggest fuck up of my life. When I was in Brazil I met someone... I am in such a bad head space... im sorry. She then met me in Barcelona... Im having a break down here... I didn't tell her I was married... I regret my actions so much... I cant phone you yet im stuck in the office... but please I would like to talk later... I promise it has never happened before... im so sorry... Obviously I know I fucked up... obviously I didnt want to tell you as I know it will rip our world apart... but to be clear... I don't want to loose you..... ive been a cunt... a dick... an asshole... I know I have... I want to be accountable for my actions.but I don't want to loose you... I am so ashamed of what I have done.... I told the woman involved last night…... And obviously she is mad... and want to also hold me accountable.. so she says she's going to message you to make sure ive told you.... Im so so so so so so SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO sorry.....I need therapy
(For the record I will not actually message his wife for confirmation. I do believe he actually sent the text)
After that I just felt sick and sad. I felt like she HAD to know, he tells me he’s never done this before and that’s why he’s so upset now but he had his ring off at the bar and he pursued me for over a week after we’d had the one night stand. I didn’t consent to being an affair partner, I would never. I’m also sad because I really liked him and I feel used and disappointed. And that of the two of us, I’m the one who seems to have more empathy for the woman he’s supposed to love. Luckily my friends are kind and uplifting to me so I have support and I know this won’t get me too down. A couple of my guy friends said I shouldn’t have gotten involved and shouldn’t have made him tell her. My women friends are very glad that I did.
When he showed me had messaged her I said Okay. Good luck with everything. Hope you get your life sorted. It’s not the end of the world but you’ve got a turbulent road ahead and I hope you learn from that and come out stronger and happier. I really liked you and thought you were one of the good ones. Really sad to find out the truth. All the best and please if you’re really feeling like you’re having some kind of mental health thing and you’re a danger to yourself, get help. Do actually get a therapist, know the emergency numbers, and reach out to your family if you need help.
I then blocked him and I feel bad for him weirdly and even feel I may have been too harsh with him. I was really harsh when I’d first messaged him - called him a child, said his behavior was gross, and when I made him tell his wife I said I didn’t care about his feelings. I wonder why he even told me the truth. What if he kills himself. What if it ruins an otherwise healthy marriage and causes trauma to his child. I feel like shit because at first I felt bad for him thinking he was sad that we couldn’t be together yet (lol) but now I’m realizing he was just anxious and panicking that I was going to find out about his marriage and blow his cover. Im out and about today and refusing to mope around about this, but it’s just such a sad situation all around. I don’t know if I made the choice but I am thinking that whether I did or didn’t, keeping him blocked is the best option.

2023.06.02 20:25 jb_bryant Orbi Router as DHCP interfering with hostnames being passed through CLI?

I installed the CLI on a RaspberryPi on my network, and set the IP of the Pi as the only DNS server. A handful of device hostnames are making it to NextDNS analytics, but most are reading as Device # with random letters and numbers, which is the same IP as my Orbi when I hover over it. I've noticed that the DNS on devices is getting set to the IP of the Orbi, not the IP of the Pi, so I think all DNS is being routed through the Orbi to the Pi then to NextDNS.
Does anyone have any ideas on a workaround or fix?

The energy transition involves more than a move away from high-carbon fuels to low- and zero-carbon fuels. It also entails the fundamental reorganization of the global economy around so-called critical minerals—the metals and other raw materials needed to build electric cars, solar panels, power lines, and other technologies that cut carbon emissions.
At the risk of stating the obvious, mines are needed to produce critical minerals, and right now, United States doesn’t have enough mines meet the demands of the energy transition—not even close.
While the United States also has to work closely with allies to secure the supply chains for these materials, something has to change at home, too.
Like many other U.S. industries, mining was largely outsourced to other parts of the world during the late twentieth century. As a result, global markets for most in-demand minerals are now dominated by the Chinese Communist Party. In fact, of the 50 critical minerals listed by the U.S. government, China is the top producer of 30 of them.
“For most critical minerals, the United States is heavily reliant on foreign sources for its consumption requirements,” a U.S. Geological Survey report said. It further reported that domestic metals production fell 6 percent in 2022.
Simply stated, the United States needs to build new mines and expand existing mines in the United States. Rather than stop digging, the United States needs to start.
To be sure, it will not be easy. Before the passage of landmark environmental laws in the 1970s, including the National Environmental Policy Act and Clean Water Act, the U.S. mining sector was known for polluting practices and indifference to the concerns of neighboring communities. Public anger and distrust proved to be a major factor in the offshoring of U.S. mining after the 1970s. This was understandable, but there were unintended consequences.
An “out of sight, out of mind” approach to metals and other mineral commodities took hold, giving tacit approval to toxic waste dumping, the use of child labor, and other reprehensible mining practices abroad.
Today, there is an opportunity to write a new chapter for the U.S. mining sector, in which the some of the raw materials for advanced energy technologies are produced here, under close scrutiny, subject to the most protective standards in the world and—above all—with strong public support.
The complicated history of mineral extraction in this country must be addressed fully and forthrightly, but it cannot be used as an excuse to keep saying no. At this point there doesn’t seem to be a mine on federal land that is not facing opposition, delays, or rejection.
Fortunately, there are already some promising examples of this new approach to mining in the United States.

A Sense of Patriotism

In southeast Nebraska, for example, the developers of a mine that will produce materials for electric-vehicle batteries have built a strong base of support in the local community. As reported by the New York Times, the mine has secured all the permits it needs to start digging and the developer—Colorado-based NioCorp—is now working with the U.S. Export–Import bank to complete financing for the billion-dollar project.
The planned Elk Creek mine will produce niobium, scandium, titanium, and a series of magnetic rare earth minerals. The global market for these minerals is dominated by other countries, including China, Russia, and Brazil.
These critical minerals can be used to build the components for electric vehicle batteries, fuel cells and wind turbines. But in conservative southeast Nebraska, NioCorp has found ways to connect with people who are less concerned with the energy transition and more worried about economic issues and national security.
The minerals produced at Elk Creek will also be used to make lighter and stronger steel products for the automotive, construction, and oil and natural gas industries, and to build fighter jet engines, among other military applications.
“NioCorp is being very thoughtful in how they’re communicating with Southeast Nebraskans,” Senator Julie Slama (R-NE), who represents the Elk Creek area, said. “In Nebraska, we have a sense of patriotism and desire to serve our country.”
While the proposed mine still has its detractors, the broad-based appeal of the project has helped maintain a sufficient mass of support, also known within industry circles as the “social license to operate.”

Same Rocks, More Value

While building new mines is absolutely necessary, it will also be important to make the most of the mines the United States already has. In some cases, existing mines will be expanded, but another strategy is gaining momentum: full-value mining.
This strategy identifies new ways to get other metals and other valuable materials out of the same rocks, which improves the economics of the existing mine and reduces mining waste.
A leading example of full-value mining is taking place in Utah at the Kennecott copper mine, southwest of Salt Lake City. Last year, the mine’s owner—Rio Tinto—started producing tellurium there as well.
The tellurium, which is used to make highly efficient thin-film solar panels, was in the same rocks as the copper. But until last year, it was not cost effective to separate it out, and the tellurium was discarded along with other waste.
That changed when Rio Tinto found a U.S. buyer for the tellurium, First Solar, which builds solar panels in Ohio. The deal was “an important step towards securing a North American supply chain of critical minerals to support the clean energy transition,” the mining company said.

Old Mines, New Tricks

The idea of reprocessing piles of discarded rocks and other mine waste has also gained steam. Innovative companies like Nth Cycle and Phoenix Tailings have developed technologies that can cleanly and safely extract critical minerals from this waste.
These breakthroughs also allow for the reprocessing of waste at pre-1970s mines that were abandoned and never properly cleaned up. For example: Regeneration, a start-up mining company is scouting for locations where critical minerals can be produced from abandoned mines and other so-called legacy sites, while creating new revenue sources for cleaning up those sites.
According to Corey Fisher, the public lands policy director for Trout Unlimited, an environmental nonprofit with experience in abandoned mine restoration, the work of Regeneration and others “will help both clean up abandoned mines and recover much needed transition minerals.”

Confront the Past, Build the Future

Abandoned mines are not the only legacy to confront. The quest for mineral wealth in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries was especially cruel to Native American communities.
That history, and the distrust it continues to produce, should not be brushed aside in the quest to build a domestic supply chain for clean energy technologies. According to investment research firm MSCI, between 68 percent and 97 percent of U.S. cobalt, copper, lithium, and nickel reserves are located within 35 miles of Native American reservations.
Changing minds about mining in Native American communities will be a massive undertaking, and there are bound to be conflicting signals along the way.
For example: Lithium Americas, the developer of a Nevada mine that will produce lithium carbonate, a key mineral in batteries, reached a “community benefits agreement” last October with the Fort McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone Tribe that includes job training, local hiring, cultural education, and other initiatives. However, three others—the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, Burns Paiute Tribe and Summit Lake Paiute Tribe—are fighting the project in federal court, arguing they were not properly consulted.
Conflicts like these can be resolved or even avoided, but the amount of work needed should not be underestimated, according to Daniel Cardenas of the National Tribal Energy Association.
“If you want loyal and long-term mining partners who can supply the most environmentally friendly and sustainable critical minerals, start talking to the Tribes now,” Cardenas wrote on Linkedin.

A Project-by-Project Focus

According to the Bipartisan Policy Center, leaders in the White House and in Congress have plowed billions of dollars into research, resource assessment, and workforce development programs focused on critical minerals since 2020.
The area of critical minerals also offers one of the rare slivers of bipartisan light. Among other things, that means allowing national security concerns—such as materials needed by the Department of Defense—to play a bigger role in the discussion, as opposed to only seeing mining through an environmental lens.
There are also promising efforts within the Biden administration and on Capitol Hill to speed up the years-long permitting process for mining projects while maintaining environmental safeguards.
These initiatives are essential, but it would be a mistake to assume that all the work to build a domestic supply chain for critical minerals can be done from Washington, D.C. in one fell swoop.
This endeavor will succeed or fail based on delivering this new positive narrative for mining. And the difference will be whether the neighbors can be persuaded that digging for critical minerals in the United States is not just good for the planet—it is good for them too.

June 2, 2023~China Is Digging a Big Frickin' Hole 33,000 Feet Into the Earth~

China Is Digging a Big Frickin' Hole 33,000 Feet Into the Earth (yahoo.com)

Well at the Shunbei oil and gas field belonging to Sinopec Northwest Oil Field Co. in Tarim Basin of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, on February 21, 2019.
China has seemingly set off on a journey into the center of the earth. This week the country has begun digging what will eventually become the deepest hole in China’s history to test drilling technology and further understand the Earth’s underground structure, Bloomberg reported.
Once completed, the hole is going to be 10,000 meters (32,808 feet). That’s a little more than 6 miles deep into the earth. The drilling is expected to occur for 457 days and is being led by the China National Petroleum Corp, according to Bloomberg. It will cut through 10 continental strata, which are the various layers of the earth. Once completed it will reach down into the cretaceous system; rocks in that layer of the year date back more than 140 million years.
The drilling project is part of the country’s efforts to expand underground research. During a speech back in 2021, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged scientists to break new barriers in different areas including deep earth exploration, China Daily reported. And earlier this year, Chinese officials vowed to strategically build up the country’s energy supplies and mineral resources. “China will launch a new round of domestic prospecting operations, focusing on strategic bulk minerals that are in short supply,” Wang Guanghua, the minister of Natural Resources, said in an interview with Xinhua News Agency, according to Bloomberg.
This could explain why the project is based in the Xinjiang region, which is the largest oil and gas-producing area in the country, the South China Morning Post reported. China also has some of the world’s largest crude iron ore reserves in the world, which is widely used in steelmaking. This could present another energy opportunity for the country as it tests drilling technology.
Countries around the world are increasingly focused on mineral exploration. Rare earth minerals and other elements found deep underground are necessary for new clean technology. They’re often used to make batteries for electric vehicles, for energy storage, and for wind turbines. And as the market for more clean energy continues to increase, nations and businesses will need steady access to those minerals to keep up with demand.

2023.06.02 20:20 gorgonzola2104 Bob, the Bob’s Baby episode made a difference

I just want to thank Bob for telling the story of his son’s birth. Thanks to what Bob shared, my wife and I were able to confidently make a hard healthcare decision for our own family with more context.
A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I welcomed our first baby into our family. I am happy to report that all of us are healthy and well. Our experience in the hospital bore a lot of similarities to what Bob recounted.
My wife started being induced using a method where they gave her some preparatory drugs on a Sunday night to then begin the labor process 12 hours later on Monday morning, all the while monitoring both her and the baby’s vitals. Monday at 8 am rolled around after a restless night on the complimentary dad couch. Our doctor, flanked by two labor and delivery nurses came in to report on the data they had collected.
The prep drugs had no effect on my wife. She had started having light contractions through the night but had not dilated any amount. Then the doctor dropped the sentence that immediately brought Bob’s story to mind. Those light contractions corresponded precisely with heart rate decelerations for the baby. Our baby was already set to come three weeks early due to some health complications, with this news added into the mix, our doctor laid out two options.
Option One: Attempt vaginal delivery - This route would involve a lot of pharmaceutical and physical intervention and would likely take 30 hours from start to birth to complete. Additionally, this method would put an incredible amount of stress on the baby. If the baby’s decels got worse during that process, they would likely take my wife in for an emergency C-section.
Option Two: Elective C-section - This route was the simple solution. There were plenty of baby and mom health red flags. We could just use surgery to deliver the baby in an hour-long process from prep to final stitch.
From Bob’s story, we suspected that those heart decels could be due to the baby being entangled with the umbilical cord and that attempting vaginal delivery would only worsen the issue. From his own experience, the doctor suspected the same, among other possibilities for the baby’s condition.
We chose door number two; get the baby out now.
We signed consent to treat forms from the surgeon and anesthesiologist at 9. My wife was whisked away for prep at 9:30. I was given sanitized gear to put over my clothes and brought into the operating room at 10. Our baby was born and we heard his first cries at 10:30.
Lo and behold; that little umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck, not once, but twice.
In the aftermath as the anxiety and adrenaline of the birth subsided; I couldn’t get Bob’s birth story out of my head. Because he chose to share that experience, my wife and I were able to make a hard decision but not feel alone. We had heard about the symptoms, treatment, and outcome before, so nothing felt like an uncertainty.
We are fortunate to not have experienced any of the post-partum anxiety or depression; but with our own medical histories, we thought that it would have been likely.
So, thank you Bob. Your story, honest and well-told, made a difference for me and my family. I think that’s worth a few wins to add to the ledger.

2023.06.02 20:07 kingfiasco [Lucky Guess] 6/2

Well folks. Despite all of our negativity and Orioles based trauma they actually did it. 16-12, four games over .500 for May. The worst is over and the O's came out on top. Or is it? The bullpen is certifiably cooked and Mullins is on the IL. Something that we all know marks a good, playoff, team is they can get through a month missing key players. June is just another tell all month. They did it in May, let's see it again in June.
Also, I LOVE when the O's play the Giants. Dongs after Dark baby. My favorite O's moment comes from an O's/Giants game in 17 when they came back down hard and Schoop hit a clutch Earl Weaver Special tm to left centerfield to put the birds up in the 9th. Manny fuckin clocking Schoop always gets me.
What are we doing here? O yeah, this is the lucky guess post. No winners from Thursday.
Because I love O's/Giants series so much and hate u/mrtallgreg I'm going to add in a bonus feature for this series. You get one chance at this and we'll record your first one. Number of splashdowns in McCovey Cove by the O's or Giants for the series. Add it to your guess but make sure it's coded after your tiebreaker guess. For instance 8-3 BAL, 5 IP 3 SD If you get the splash downs correct for the series you'll get 3 points. 0 splash downs will not count.

Hi everyone,
This morning, a little over $11,000 was removed from my savings account with no prior warnings. The transaction says Debit/Hold 06/02. I have been on hold with customer service for over an hour. Has anyone had this happen before? What is this?

2023.06.02 19:50 ConsequencesFree How much would this unmanned convenience store cost to build and operate? Is $30k enough to build?

I am currently in Maryland, USA and I noticed that most liquor stores here and in DC close at 10pm even though their license allows for up to 2am. I would sell other things as well. So I thought up an automated convenience store that functions kind of like a vending machine… but today upon more research, I shouldn’t have been surprised to find out Chinese companies are already doing it but surprisingly they seem to be missing one key piece that mine addresses. Mixing both unmanned retail stores with the vending machine experience. For example an unmanned store in Korea allows people to walk inside the store and shop alone and the payment is automated… that concept requires a lot of faith whereas mine eliminates any possibility of shrinkage/theft.
You browse through the app/website, select your product and pay. You can have it delivered or pick it up. Let’s say you decide to pick it up. You drive up, park, and walk up to the small structure. So imagine a small detached structure similar to those some banks have to access ATMs. You scan your phone, input your code, and the door unlocks, you walk in and it locks. You step up to the glass screen and have the option to add more products to your order. The lobby is very small. If you need help, you can press help and a customer service representative will assist you via audio. There are cameras inside and outside the structure. For sensitive products such as alcohol, this representative will confirm your ID/age. You complete the checkout and your order is dispensed similar to a vending machine. You pick it up, unlock the door and leave.
So the whole building is very small, maybe the size of a US walk-in closet. Merchandise is stored underground, 1-2 stories, in box containers and brought up automatically. These structures would be either next to shopping centers/strip malls or next to neighborhoods. Ideally it can hold 100 different products, and about 3,000 items. The size of store could be bigger, like the size of a 7-11 or bigger. Also the number of products depends on item size and the structure size. There will be a person who loads inventory when trucks arrive, daily or weekly.
Business model
Either charge a $5.99 convenience fee per order or a $19.99 monthly membership fee.
$14.99 delivery fee. Most, if not all of that money goes to the driver.
Charge delivery service companies such as Uber and Doordash a fee to use the platform. $1,000 per month, plus 20% revenue split on whatever they charge customers for delivery.
Charge CPG companies $500 per item, per location slotting fees when legal, plus 10% sales fee. This is meant to keep prices down. So if product X sells for $100, we get $10, while the company gets $90.
My target customers could be anyone with weird work schedules, family’s, and people inconvenienced by early store closures. One example is, say you get off at midnight, almost every retail store will be closed. But you can do your shopping on your way out of work, and pick up your goods before heading home. Or you could place and order and pick it up early in the morning, say 5am. Another example is people who want to drink but don’t want to go out to bars now that liquor stores are closed. Or people needing over the counter medicine for things such as a cold that’s keeping you up, etc.
My big problem is I don’t know how much it would cost to build this out. Ideally, I would want it under $50,000, preferably closer to $30k all in. And yea I know the liquor license and having over the counter medication and maybe even weed would come with their own challenges, regulations, and headaches but I think the trade off is worth it. I can easily see a scenario where each location clears $1,000,000 annually with say a 70% margin.
What do you guys think?

2023.06.02 19:38 sunniehon What to file in my situation?

I’m a U.S. citizen (born there) living in another country. I just graduated university but have never worked/had a job.
I do plan to move to the US probably sometime next year.
I have 2 foreign bank accounts in my name but I think they are called custodial accounts. Basically my mom opened a savings account for me when I was a minor and now that I’m over 18 I have access to it. However, she still places a percentage of her income into it every month.
My question is what forms do I file and when? Should I wait till I get to the US to do them or start now? I do not have a U.S. bank account or a U.S. phone numbeaddress/ PO box but I can get those things when I move to the US.
Do I file form 1040 even though I’ve never worked? I know I need to file the FBAR but does the account being custodial/my mom still putting money into it, require an additional form? Does that count as income?
Lastly is it possible to do this myself or should I pay for a service? Thank you.

2023.06.02 19:37 Thecardinal74 You stole from my girl? I won't be petty with my revenge...

This took place late 90's, when cell phones still charged calls by the minute so the use of pagers was still pretty common.
My GF at the time had a pager, and she would keep it clipped to her sun visor in her car when driving, so if it went off she could glance at it to see who was sending the page without really taking eyes off road, and see if it's worth pulling over. Being early summer and we were about 20, 21, life was all about social time those days.
At this time, well before the internet took hold, the popular hangout was the Shopping Mall. 200 stores, something for everyone, and it's where the masses of teenagers would spend their free time. Largest mall in the region so always a chance to meet new people or find people you hadn't seen in a while.
So as she pulled in on a Friday night to meet up with her friends, she saw an old friend from her neighborhood, someone she hadn't seen since middle school years. (he went down the pothead route, she didn't, they drifted but no hard feelings) So she stopped next to him, chatted for a few minutes, exchanged pleasantries, then moved on to find a parking space.
It was there, as she went to get out of the car, that she noticed the pager was missing. She instantly remembered he had leaned in to rest his arms on the window frame to chat, and remembered when he asked her about something that prompted her to reach for her glovebox, and he must've swiped it then. Feeling stupid, and knowing who took it wasn't hard to figure out, but good luck finding him again amongst the crowds.
She went home, and tried to deal with it herself. She knew where he lived, as during the conversation he had mentioned he was "staying with so-and-so" and she knew where that guy lived. She borrowed her older brother's cell phone, called me and told me where she was going, gave me the address. I headed there.
So she went to the townhouse complex, parked right outside their unit, walked up and rang the doorbell. She talked to the mutual friend's mother. Explained what happened. Lady seemed annoyed at the kid, said he was a deadbeat, and agreed to help. She paged her son, he called back, and she said they were on their way home right now.
So she sat outside and waited. 15 minutes, 30 minutes... I show up and park far away, but within a line of site. I wanted to back her up in case things for fucky but if she wanted to handle this the nice way, I'll let her do that first. (I think she thought she would confront him, he's say something like "it was worth a try" and hand it back?) An hour. By now it was getting late, was after 12 midnight. We waited until 12:30 when she calls me and says she needs to get some sleep, "let's just write it off."
But I had a feeling. So I told her to leave, to pull out of the complex, circle around, then pull back into the complex and park over where I was parked, then turn off her car.
She does, then comes join me in my car and we have a bit of a stakeout.
Sure enough, my suspicions were confirmed when not 5 minutes later the guys arrive. Her mother told them she was waiting, then told them once she left and it was clear to come home.
I asked her if that was the asshole's car, or the friends. We saw them get out and realized it was the asshole's car.
My plan quickly fell into shape. I told her to go home, get some sleep, I'll take care of this.
See, the car stood out. It was a beater car. It was blue with a silver back fender and back passenger door, replaced from an accident but never painted to match. It was heavily tinted, which is illegal but not really enforced unless police wanted a reason to pull you over. It had a loud system. Every square foot had a dent or a ding. There was a shitty add-on spoiler that was 3 sizes too large, and there were Jamaica flag bumper stickers on it even though he was white as snow. And he had these obnoxiously bright neon license plate frames.
You know the type, instead of buying a decent car wastes tons of money blinging out a piece of shit that constantly breaks down.
So I sit and I wait. 1 am, 2am rolls around. Most house lights in the area have gone out by now, including theirs. Not quite time.
3 am rolls around, 3:30... almost.
3:45, there was not a lick of movement anywhere. Now's the time!
I get out of my car, hunch down (just in case) and slowly work my way to his car. Pull out my screwdriver and quietly remove both the back and the front license plates, replace the frames, head back to my car, and drive home.
You see, the way the parking lot was, walking out of his front door you are looking at the driver side of his car, not the front or the back. And who, honestly, looks to see if there are license plates on your car when you go to get in it?
So it's now late Saturday afternoon, and a posse shows up at my GF's house, including a very large woman threatening to beat the crap out of her. She played it cool, said she had NO idea what they were talking about. They screamed that she stole his license plates because he had stolen her pager, and he even took out the pager and smashed it on the sidewalk as some sort of "revenge"
She laughed and said "I honestly have NO idea what you are talking about.. I don't really care about the pager, we already had the account moved to a new pager, that was was old and ugly anyway", yeah I came by to ask for it back, but it got late so I just got a different one. I don't care enough to make an issue out of it"
They continued to scream at her. Apparently he went out, the cops pulled him over for not having plates on his car, and he had to go to the police station and file a police/theft report in order to get out of a ticket.
She just repeated "I had nothing to do with that, so unless you have proof, you're about to be seeing the police again"
They knew they had nothing, grumbled and weren't sure how to react, so they gave a few more empty threats threats and left.
I let it sit. I gave it about 6-7 weeks, nothing more came of it, and everyone but me apparently moved on with our lives.
I guess they thought that was the end of it.
But I saw that visit and those threats as an escalation, so I reacted in kind.
Late summer I Again went back to his place. Again I found the car (it was really easy to spot), and Again I waited until about 3:45am, and Again I stole his (new) license plates.
Only this time I put his original plates back on.
And because the non-repaired side of the back of his car left a gaping hole in the wheel well, I was able to get my arm up in there and pop out the bulb socket for his left blinker, then I went on my way.
So even if he DID get into the habit of making sure there were plates on the car.. there were. And unless he was paying attention, the numbers would seem natural because he had them for years. But I'm not sure he even looked.
If the internet was a thing back then, hell if SCANNERS were a popular thing back then, I would still have the hard evidence which to this day I'd probably use as my phone's lock screen picture.
A little blurb in the local paper a few days later. A blurb that was proudly cut out and shared amongst friends, but sadly lost to the ages in 25+ years and countless apartment and house moves since then.
A little blurb the "police blotter" section.
About the arrest of a particular young man, who was pulled over for a malfunctioning blinker, on a car that was operating on stolen plates. He was charged with fraudulently filing a false police report, (claiming plates clearly in his possession were stolen) defrauding the Motor Vehicle Commission (a crime in this state) for fraudulently obtaining new plates, possession of controlled substances, and possession of drug paraphernalia, along with a host of traffic violations for having tinted window, failure to maintain vehicle, and a few other tickets. He was remanded pending bail and issued a court date.
Never found out if he posted bail, I'm sure his friend's mother didn't, and he had already been on the outs with his own family.
It was a good 5 months later when we were at the mall again, and she sees the large woman and a couple of the other people that came to her house that day walking towards us. We all noticed each other at the same time, I felt my GF tense up a little bit, but without a word those three just paused a second, turned, and went in a different direction.
Never saw or heard from any of them ever again. I guess my message was received loud and clear.

2023.06.02 19:35 mtol115 Does removing a missed payment restore your credit score?

So all of my credit scores were in the 690s/700s. Forget to turn on autopay for one of my cards (Bank of America) and missed a payment (it was $9 dollars and the only balance). Score dropped to the 660s and my auto score dropped to the 630s.
called the credit card company and said they would remove the missed payment and report that to the bureaus. Will the removal restore my credit score, and will it still hurt me if I try to get a car lease which I plan to do sometime in July?
I’m 23 with total 5 years of credit history and an average of 2 and a half years credit age.

2023.06.02 19:28 KingFotis I fixed running down fleeing units! (or: how CA is actually awesome)

So I've been modding a lot of Total War since Rome 2, and was especially bothered by not being able to kill routing units. It happens in most games since the 1hp rule was abandoned, but the Warhammer titles are the worst offenders.

I will keep this short, this is the relevant value in the _kv_rules file:
pursuit_charge_bonus_modifier 1.0000
All attacks against fleeing foes are charges, and... this number multiplies your charge bonus by this much when attacking a routing enemy...

So if you set it to, say, 10, your units instakill most fleeing foes with a single attack or two.

You can go crazy and set it to 100 or even 1000, and your units will even destroy fleeing heroes and monsters, or you can be more conservative and use a lower number like 2 or 3, or even 1.5.

I particularly enjoy deleting units, as I used to in Rome and Medieval 2, so I figured you might as well!

PS: So CA is secretly awesome for including this number in the game for us modders... but I'm wondering why don't they actually use it, even a x2 modifier would've made a difference - and units being unable to kill routing enemies has been often reported as a problem here and elsewhere.

Disclaimer: What I am reporting is for Warhammer 2, but the value is unchanged in Warhammer 3 and probably similar in other games as well, so you will get the same results there as well.

2023.06.02 19:28 avantgardengnome Am I fucked?

I applied for a passport renewal by mail on 4/1 and USPS tracking confirms it was delivered to the Irving, TX location the morning of 4/4. To the best of my knowledge, all of my paperwork was in order. But the application status portal has never listed anything but “Not Available,” and my bank hasn’t processed the check I sent along with the application, either.
After a few attempts I was able to get through to the expedite-your-passport phone line, and they sent me the application, which I promptly submitted, only to get a message saying that “After reviewing our system, we are unable to complete your request because we have not yet received your application at the Department of State.” I replied with a note clarifying my situation and asking for further info but never heard back.
So now I’ve called the expedite-your-passport people again, and they just recommended waiting until 14 days before travel and calling back then. When I pressed them and mentioned my check hadn’t cleared, they put me on hold and eventually said I could either wait until 14 days before travel or just try reapplying altogether, but they couldn’t provide me with any further info.
I’m starting to get worried that my paperwork may have gotten lost in the shuffle entirely, and I have an international trip planned for July—I’m not sure if the 14-day window is going to be enough time if they determine that I have to start from square one (and I’ve of course already mailed them my current passport).
Has anybody seen a situation where a check hasn’t been processed for 8 weeks and the new passport still arrived eventually? Or is there a more direct method of ascertaining the status of my application paperwork before a locator number is assigned online? Any leads whatsoever would be greatly appreciated!
