2023.06.02 21:17 CPTpurrfect The Dangers of Modern Gaming - written by someone who loves gaming

Hey fellow siblings and dads,
I love video games, they were always a part of my life. I met a lot of dear friends through them over the years in many different games. And that's why I want to talk about something I positively can describe as disgusting and gross.
Or more accurately: Predatory.
Over the last twenty years the focus of the game industry became more and more towards multiplayer games and away from single player games, and more and more towards multiplayer-centric games.
And I want to focus your attention on the first sentence of the last paragraph - to be precise on "the focus of the game industry". What does that mean? Does that mean that single player games weren't popular anymore? No. Not one bit. It means that the people behind the big publishers (those who pay for the development of most if not all larger games but not necessarily develop them themselves) realized something very important to them: That they can monetize multiplayer games - or as they call them "live services" - far better than single player games.
It isn't that single player games were dead or didn't sell, it is that the game industry wished them dead.
Because what's more effort? Developing a new game, or just putting another 50 skins or so into an existing one? The pay out is probably roughly the same, whether you pay 60 up front or enough people by a handful of those skins so that the average player paid 60. I think you can make an educated guess what is more effort.
But if it was just that I wouldn't have felt the need to make this post. This is truly just the tip of an iceberg I want you to show here.
And for the next part we talk about a concept some of you might be familiar with, but don't worry if you aren't - I'll explain it in detail. The concept in question is a four letter acronym, and it is called
F.O.M.O.
Or spelt out: Fear Of Missing Out. And the name really tells you the whole story what it is about - about the publisher's intentional creation of FOMO within vulnerable users - not all are vulnerable and if count among the ones who aren't affected by this at all, you are truly "one of the lucky ones".
FOMO is about "limited time offers" and I think most who are into gaming can see where this is going:
Rotating storefronts (Fortnite, VALORANT), battle passes (every multiplayer game in existence, seemingly), sales, limited time offers (BUY NOW! ONLY AVAILABLE FOR XX), etc.
To take VALORANT as an example for the first point, imagine you see a cool skin in the shop, but it isn't even the one you really want for the gun - just one that you think is still an "upgrade" over the one you currently use. I mean, sure it isn't the one you really want, but,... who knows when that hits the store shelves? And when I don't buy it now, I still prefer that one over what I currently have, and most-ish others, so... if I don't buy it now, who knows when I can get another skin for that gun that I actually like? Right? Better buy it now, right?
Does that feel remotely familiar? That is pure FOMO. And I don't think it surprises you to learn that this is 100% on purpose. As said earlier: Something I can positively describe as predatory. And the prey, that is the player.
Another concept integral to live services is what is investment - many of them are free to play, so starting them doesn't take a lot of you - just download and install the game, maybe you need to make a new account and you are good to go - great, right? How easy it is to get started. Often you then also get something to make the start smoother, some kind of starter pack, ain't that nice, now you even have some stuff, straight of the bat!
So, now that we are all hopefully a bit more cynical... let me ask you: Why do you think do they give you those things to make the start feel so smooth? Why not just make the experience as a whole smooth and get rid of the "starter pack"? I want to remind you what aspect we are talking about here, once more:
Investment.
Because that way you already have so many nice things you earned from playing the game - stuff you'd usually often have to spent money for or otherwise would take a whole lot longer. Ain't that nice? You can earn stuff by playing. Almost like... a job. But this isn't a job, right? This is FUN, right? This is what you want to invest your time in after work to get it out of the system, to relax.
Fast forward: You are now playing for a couple of hours, maybe this is your second or third day, and the goodies from the starter pack are basically used up. You feel how the dopamine cycle gets stretched and how what you do now isn't fun anymore - it is boring. You really want that experience back you have just a few hours ago, where everything was fun and the dopamine was flowing freely. Well, how nice that in the shop you see this super exclusive starter offer for a really sizeable amount of items, that otherwise would cost you a fortune, for, what is that? 90% off? Just for a few more hours available? Oh boy, better get out the credit card, wouldn't want to miss that, I mean I already played a couple of hours and I had a genuinely good time with it, if that stretches it out for a few more hours, that'd be great, and what's 10 bucks? That's a steal!
So you buy it. And for another few hours, maybe a day, you have a great time, dopamine flows freely again. You enjoy what you are doing. And it was definitely worth the money, right? But then we are back at the point where the experience starts to drag. And the items from the super exclusive starter offer are also nearly gone as well. I mean I could buy items from the shop now, but what earlier was 10 bucks would now be 50, and that's a lot of money,... but I mean I already paid... so... but it's really a lot of money, I could by myself something outside of that game for that. A nice dinner, a good book and maybe still have enough for cinema tickets, but... I already invested money.
So might as well.
-50$
And that brings us to what investment leads us, to be a bit melodramatic about it - you might have noticed I do like being a bit melodramatic - the THIRD HORSEMAN OF THE GAMING-APOCALYPSE...
okay that might've been a bit much, but it really is basically the other side of the same coin as investment:
The Sunk Cost-Fallacy.
Popular in gambling and live services alike, it describes the "in for a penny, in for a pound"-mentality - or in other words, why we just paid 50 bucks for a bunch of crap that will be used up within two hours. Because we already invested those 10 bucks earlier. Because that told our brain "it is okay to invest money into this" and that is a huge flood gate gone. A flood gate certain companies obviously want gone. So we are ready to pay more. And more. And more. Because I mean if we already paid now 60, might as well take the big super deluxe pack for 100 next time, I mean I get 10% more value out of that than if I had bought 2x50 buck packs.
And now let's talk about an element popularized by Fortnite you can basically find in every online game these days, one mentioned earlier already, that unites FOMO, investment and the Sunk Cost-fallacy in one fine package:
Battle Passes.
Basically inescapable in modern multiplayer games, to not aware allow you to earn rewards for a limited time within a battle pass. And for those blissfully unaware, allow me to explain the concept:
A battle pass (BP) is a form of continuous rewards for keep playing the game, you can think of it in a way as a stamp card. Except that this stamp card often has a very limited time during which you need to fill it up to get the payout, as they are usually only active for a very limited amount of time, this differs from game to game, but common durations are between 1 and 3 months. Instead of the stamps you have a separate "battle pass level" (or something called something else that is functionally a separate level), and (usually) two reward tracks - a free one and a paid one. The free one drip feeds you nice rewards every few levels, but the paid one is where it is obviously at: Exclusive cosmetic items you can only find in here (hello FOMO my old friend), other stuff you'd usually have to pay obscene amounts of cash for, etc.
I think you can see how this works already - but there is an extra kicker that makes them worse:
Battle pass progression is often capped per day/week and is usually achieved with missions you do on the side even if you don't plan on doing them.
So even if you aren't interested in the battle pass you still will slowly progress, you will get your free rewards and one day you might just look at it and go "well that's a lot of stuff I'd already get if I buy the premium pass upgrade now" - after all you level the pass as whole, so if you buy it late you still get all the premium rewards for the previous levels immediately. And you better believe that the game will do everything in its power to make sure you see what you could get "for just a handful of bucks".
So you buy the pass. But if you buy the pass, you obviously don't want it to go to waste, now you want all the rewards, right? You want to reach the maximum battle pass level, otherwise you lose out on stuff you paid for, right?!
And now let's go back a few paragraphs: Battle pass progression is often capped per day/week. Can you see why they'd do that? Why they don't just allow you to play 83478 hours non-stop to get everything immediately? Why they want you just to play... a few hours a day. And even if you don't feel like it, you better log in and do your daily missions, right? I mean you don't want to miss out on all the stuff you already paid the money for. Better now also pay the time for it.
And let's go back a few more paragraphs: But this isn't a job, right? I mean, you do your time per day, even if you don't feel like it, to get the rewards,... that does sound an awful lot like a job, suddenly, doesn't it?
And now thanks to battle passes, you can't just quit, I mean you'd at least would want to finish the current battle pass, you paid for it, right? You wouldn't want to waste that money, right? So better finish that one and quit after. And,... oh, what is that? I could PREORDER the next battle pass?! And I get it 40% cheaper? I mean,... I don't really enjoy playing the game that much anymore, but I'd be stupid not to buy it, right?! That's a massive steal! I can't let such an opportunity pass me by!
And as said, that's not one game that's doing that. It's most of them. They compete for your most valuable - no not your money, your time. Imagine if you don't just play one game like that, but multiple, imagine what it does to you.
To those who feel caught reading this: It isn't your fault. You are a victim. And it isn't your fault. You just wanted to spend your precious free time with something you enjoy.
I don't think I surprise anyone at this point that all this very much isn't just by design, but almost the central goal of many of those companies, as this gives them the most recurring revenue and makes sure that even if they have a game that does poorly their other stuff is still active and lines their pockets with cash at the expense of those vulnerable to those mechanisms.
Lastly, for those who want to know more about this a video from 7 years ago at a mobile gaming conference that goes into more detail how most of this works and what tricks are employed, most fitting summed up with a sentence by the speaker: We can talk about the morality of this at the end, if there is time.
And all this is written by me, who loves video games. And it is written, because and not despite me loving video games. I am not saying "don't game" or "forbid your kids to play games" - games can and should be something wonderful. But what I want to do is to inform you about this. So that you know the tricks they try to employ against you. Companies never are your friend, but most video game companies are a special kind of evil.
Much Love
Big Bro (or for the ones who read this older than me - Lil Bro)
P.S.: Feel free to share your stories about similar experiences in the comments, depending on how this post'll do I'll try to read and respond to as many as possible.

2023.06.02 21:15 fonix232 How to adjust a draught excluder on the front door?

I've recently moved into a new flat, and the gap under the front door is quite massive - I could nearly fit my pinky under.
This also means that any time a window is open, the front door turns into a boatswain's whistle. Quite annoying.
I've had the maintenance guy of the landlord attend due to some other issues I've had, and he said it's adjustable, but since it wasn't a problem reported initially, he'd need to charge £100 to do it. Which is quite high for something that's apparently really simple.
However I can't find a single guide that would tell me how to do it - all of them are about fixing a non-adjustable excluder to the outside of the door, whereas mine is built in.
As for adjustment I found that there's a metal plate on the side of the hinges, on the bottom, with a single Philips head screw and a plastic piece below that can be pulled out about 4cm.
How would I go around lowering this?

2023.06.02 21:14 traumathrowawayacc 22 [F4M] New York - Want to build a genuine and wholesome connection!

Hi there!! I'm Jay! :)
I want to find a guy that is compatible to me and shares the same values. Hoping to find him here!
I am a 22 year old who graduated college and and am currently living in New York!
I am looking to form a bond with someone, and then continue with an in person relationship!
A bit about me: - I have natural hair that I like to keep short, and I occasionally like wearing different wig styles to show my personality!
-I am on a weight loss journey! So I cherish healthy living and fitness. I am looking for someone who will motivate me to make the right decisions but at the same time also loves my body the way it is right now. I am currently 170lbs, my goal is around 130-140lbs. I've done it before, so I know I can do it again! I love walking and being active so definitely looking for a man who is the same!
-I am looking for someone who is mature and is established. Meaning, a man who works hard every day in any aspect of his life (career, family, or fitness). Someone who is level headed. But I am also looking for someone fun, kind, affectionate, and chill to hang out with!
-I am looking for a man who will prioritize spending time with me, whether it is virtually or in person. Someone who communicates and is neither pushy on me texting back within seconds, but someone who respects me enough to let me know if they're busy/to expect a longer wait time. Someone who is not shy to take random pictures of themselves and send them to me just so I know those silly little thoughts you have. Also someone who doesn't mind me taking tons of pictures too (because I do take a lot of pictures haha)
-I believe in communication! I need someone emotionally available, someone who isn't afraid to have those long, deep conversations with me. Someone who will hear me out and not judge me. A man that really listens but also has enough confidence to speak up too!
-My love languages are words of affirmations and quality time! It's my top two love languages :) Also, I want a man who intentionally plans dates/hang outs/skype sessions, and wants to genuinely have fun with me!
-I love anime! I watch so much anime, and I need a guy who is willing to watch some with me!
A bit about my careeschool...
-I am a published author! I have written 3 books, first one dating back when I was only 13! I was introduced to the publishing industry at a young age, so I went to college to study creative writing. I am currently minoring in creative writing and majoring in psychology! What I plan to do in the future is become a liscensed Expressive Writing therapist and/or create books for the youth to help their mental health!
-I used to have 3 on campus jobs when I was on campus. Library Assistant, tutor, and I work at the gym as a proctor. I am going to be starting a new job soon so I would consider myself a busy person, but I ALWAYS make sure to prioritize my relationships that are serious, and I expect my man to do the same with me.
***I consider myself to be a religious person, and this is something that value. I am Catholic and hope to meet someone who shares my faith! I'm looking for a deep connection, where we can pray together and listen to gospel music!
*** I smoke weed! So I am also looking for a man who does the same! I'm very 420 friendly!
*** I would consider myself to be asexual, which means that I want to form a relationship where sex is not a priority and isn't expected of me. Sending nudes is also something I will not participate in and is a hard boundary. However, I am an extremely romantic person and value intimacy and closeness in other ways! If you want clarification on this, I will gladly explain further over PM!
I am open to talking to anyone between the ages of 22-29 years old!
I want to say that I am a very open-minded person and welcome many different guys! Please decide for yourself if you meet these qualities and send me a message! All I ask for is commitment to having something serious and someone who is ready for that. Looking forward to finding you!

2023.06.02 21:12 Tomtomorrow9 trip report: Coe Trip over Memorial Day weekend

I posted pics separately but imgur link is here: https://imgur.com/a/QJYSL7D. Am discovering I am not a reddit-whiz. Here is my trip report.
Quick summary: Basic route: went from HQ to China Hole, up Narrows Trail, right on Bear Mtn Road to County Line Rd., left on that then Right on Chaparral trail, then short right on Red Creek and left on Robison Creek, then Right down Orestimba Creek Road, Right at Hartman to Mississipi lake, South on Willow Ridge Road, right on willow ridge trail and back to HQ. I think total mileage about 45 miles with some detours and about 6,200 feet elevation gain. For Coe a lot of people, but still able to camp by myself every night. Weather was perfect: lows upper 40s highs b/w upper 60s and mid 70s. Bugs: minimal, bothered me about an hour total around sunset over 5 days, had a couple bites, didn’t use deet. Water – plentiful in China Hole area, available in Red Creek with good flow but I don’t know how long, not much in upper Robison creek but plenty lower down in creek, plentiful Orestimba creek. For me, Coe is usually too hot and dry after Memorial Day but I think this year may be an exception if anyone still wants to give it a shot while they wait for snow to melt in Sierra.
Extended description:
Thursday
From HQ to China Hole, up Narrows, past Miller field and Arnold Horse Camp, right on Bear Mountain Road, camped just above/North of Water Gulch right before Bear Mountain Road crosses East Fork Coyote to begin steep climb up Bear Mountain. I don’t know maybe about 8 or 9 miles all flat and downhill with of course some slower creek walking which I like.
There is a lot of flat space there. Water was flowing well and clear. Pro tips: don’t mash your finger with rock while putting in stakes. Don’t get both your hiking socks and camping socks wet. Not that I did that…I am much smarter than that.
Saw a couple people on way to China Hole, and two more b/w Los Cruzeros and Bear Mountain Road intersection. No one after that.
Friday
– Up up up Bear Mountain Road. Though steep I kinda liked it. Might have been worse going downhill ‘cause knees. Lots of what I think is mountain lion scat some disturbingly fresh. Lots and lots of pretty views. Didn’t see a soul. Just for kicks, took second right, first right after Bear Mopuntain peak Trail, on to first turn off for Bear Springs trail, thinking I’d see if I could find Spring. Gave up after about ¾ mile as seemed blocked by brush and didn’t want to poke around to find trail. I know people go frequently on bear spring to mississippi lake - maybe the second right at County Line road is better bear spring trail route - or maybe if I had poked around a bit I’d have found trail. I dunno.
- Then left on County Line road. You get to some barbed wire as is private property but look to your right and can easily step over and continue. Though feels weird/questionable to do this, I believe is completely legit as long as stay on trail to pass through the private property. Was feeling like a real explorer but then humbled by crossing path with high school group out for graduation trip. They were cheerful and was good to see them having fun.
-Then right on Chaparral Trail. I knew it’d be steep and was not a great trail but was worse than I expected, perhaps partly because was getting tired and it was getting hot. A real knee-buster in places. Often blocked by growth. Easy to lose trail (though I was tired and bombing down it so maybe if I was more careful would have been better). I lost it pretty badly at one point and got stuck doing some real bushwacking through shrubs to get back on it – scratching up my clothes and self a bit. Pro tip: don’t do this. Didn’t see anyone.
- At bottom of Chaparral trail, took right and found first shady spot by Red Creek. No one there. It is really pretty valley plain with a lot of flat spaces for camping. Very very nice. I was tired and it felt like mid-70s. I figured I was probably covered with ticks so stripped down put all my clothes save boxers in permeable bag (senchi bag) with rock in it to allow the creek to wash everything off. Then took washcloth bath in creek. Water flowing well though was not a ton. I don’t know maybe up to my ankles. While airdrying in sun in my boxers while creek washed my clothes, high school group came by again – awkward. Hung up my clothes to dry a bit (but not too much as wanted them a little moist to stay cool) and hung out enjoying the sun on my skin. Pro tip: if your skin hasn’t seen sun in I don’t know a year, uhm, don’t do this, you will get a burn. But again I would not do this. I am much smarter than that.
-High school group continued down red creek road and camped out of site/sound at intersection of Robison Creek trail. I walked around Red creek a bit but mostly just hung around then cowboy camped in bivy. Got a lot of dew and outer bag and borah bivy alarmingly wet but I was dry inside and worked out okay. Really pretty stars. Nice afternoon and evening.
- All in all was I don’t know maybe 8 or 10 miles for day
Saturday
-Went south on Red creek and in only .2 or so left on Robison Creek trail. High school group was camped there as well as another group of 3 or 4. Robison creek trail was somewhat encroached with grass but easy to follow and pretty and I was excited to be in Orestimba. After a couple miles or so you hit upper portions of Robison creek and trail follows creek northeast. At upper creek, not much water, I guess you could pull in an emergency but not really flowing and gnarly looking to me. Followed creek trail and as you went down flow got good. Lots of crossings. At intersection of Pinto creek is pretty field with lots of flat spots for camping. Would be nice to camp there one day. Saw party of 3 or 4 that had camped at beginning of Robison trail.

2023.06.02 21:11 extraterresticle_ binding methods for summer heat

I've tried taping with KT tape, it's expensive and a waste bc for me I can never get it too look well, with out it hurting and pulling my akin, only for sweat or water to make it useless less than 24 hours later.
traditional binder works best but still socks lmao, uniboob moment, also it's hot as and traps heat and sweat. started getting a rash last year that took months to get rid of, don't want again.
now that I'm starting wear stuff thay fits better, I'm beginning to feel more confident 3 months on T, but it's getting hot again, and I live in the ar.pit of Texas where summers can be upwards of 90-100+ degrees for 4 months straight, humid, and even hot at night.
plus side is T has definitely caused my chest to lose elasticity and make everything more maliable, bad news is I still ha e plenty there. Last time I checked over 5 years ago I was a 36DD and not much has changed since then.
I'm considering one of this black Nike sports bras? I want something that'll flatten but be comfortable and if doable be something that doesn't show to badly under my clothes.
any advice is worth noting, I'll try just about anything twice.
most days I normally just don't bind but since T I've been getting more and more dysphpric about my feminine attributes as my masculine ones are coming in, it's getting harder to ignore and want something reliable for days it's impossible to ignore. thank you :]

2023.06.02 21:09 Belt_Head Seeking Advice as a Student: Which Functional Programming Language Should I Learn?

Hello fellow people I'm seeking guidance on choosing a functional programming language to learn.
It is for fun but if it complements my upcoming subjects oop with Java and Python. That would be great.
I'm already comfortable with Python and OOP in C++, so I'm sure that i will have some free time and in that free time i want to explore the realm of functional programming. Could you please recommend a functional programming language that would be a great fit for me?
I'm fine with reading documention but if there are any good resources please also leave them in commons.

2023.06.02 21:08 AccomplishedKale795 Ben Gross : The Cat Dad

Ben had never thought that he would ever be a cat dad, not since he saw his own father run over his cat when he was only five. But yesterday, history almost repeated itself when he almost ran over two stray kittens while driving himself home from the graduation ceremony.
It had happened only a few hours ago - despite the fact that in an attempt to impress his dad, who was in the passenger seat, he had tried to be extra precise while backing out of his parking spot, he missed a little something in his way.
However, before the disaster could happen, a shrill scream made him slam the brakes.
"STOP! You'll run over them, STOP!"
Shira?
He jumped out the car and ran to the back, to find Shira looking slightly wary of a cardboard box near one of his back wheels. Inside the box were two kittens.
"BEN!" she shrieked on seeing him, her arms flailing in an almost comical way, "You almost killed them!"
Ben picked up the box, and noticed that there was a small slip of paper inside it.
"You should be more mindful of how you treat animals, Ben! We're supposed to share the planet with them, not-"
"Here, hold it for a moment" he interrupted, holding out the box for her to take.
She did not comply. Instead, she scooted away with a scared look on her face.
It took every last ounce of resilience inside Ben to not roll his eyes. Here she was, lecturing him about being 'mindful' with animals, when she was too disgusted to hold a box with two tiny, malnourished sleeping kittens.
Balancing the box in one hand, he pulled out the slip of paper and opened it.
"Take care of them, please" it read.
Take care of them. Hm. Someone left them here to be found.
After a moment of pondering, he made his decision.
"I'll take them to a shelter." he told Shira, opening the car door to put the two kittens inside.
"Wait!" Shira exclaimed, pulling out her phone and positioning herself as if to take a selfie.
"Shira, I'm really not in the mood to-" Ben began protesting, but the sound her phone made told him she had refused to listen to him. She skipped away, typing what he was sure was a story about how she saved two innocent kittens.
Her followers will like that, for sure.
Still, I'm rescuing two kittens from certain death. That's a good deed.
His good deed, however, remained unfinished, because the shelter did not have any space for cats and could not take in the two kittens. Ben was forced to take the kittens home, with the reassurance that his dad would find a place for them somewhere else.
And now here he was, having cleaned and fed them with Patty, trying to figure out what variety they were while shovelling spahgetti into his mouth.
"Oh, Ben! My sweet boy has graduated!" a saccharine voice suddenly spoke.
His mother.
Vivian Gross, unlike his dad, had chosen to be absent from his graduation ceremony, where he and Devi had jointly recieved the title of valedictorian. His dad had hugged him tightly and exclaimed how proud he was of his son with tears in his eyes. Ben knew he would remember that moment and smile till the day he died, he would be forever grateful for it, but it didn't quite erase the truth - he had expected his mother to show up. This was not a PTA meeting, not a debate tournament, not a club presentation - he has graduated high school. This was important. Today, for one day, he was important.
Apparently not important enough for his mother to abandon her regenerative healing spa appointment.
He did not want to admit it, but a sinking weight had appeared in his chest when his dad had informed him that his mom wasn't coming at all, and it had only dulled slightly since then. On hearing her voice, the weight re-appeared with full force. She pulled out a chair and sat beside him at the dinner table.
"No phone! Be respectful when your mother wants to talk to you, alright?"
Ben immediately put his phone down.
"So, have you thought about college, honey? Where would you like to go?"
Ben tried his best to not let the sheer disbelief show on his face. After all, 3he should have seen this coming.
"Uh, yeah, I - I applied to Columbia. The acceptance letter arrived two months ago. I got in. I'm pretty sure I told both you and dad?"
"You did? Oh, I must have forgotten! Typical me, forgetting things all the time."
It isn't normal to forget what ivy league your son got int- no, no Ben, don't be ungrateful. Don't say anything.
Well, I'm not being ungrateful here. She should've known this.
Before Ben could decide whether or not to convey his true feelings on the matter, Vivian cut the conversation short by pulling her phone out of her purse and beginning to scroll through it. Whether she ignored or didn't hear his scoff, he did not know.
After some time, she spoke up again.
"Oh, you and your girlfriend rescued kittens today? That's so nice!"
"My girlfriend?"
"Shira! She's your girlfriend, isn't she? I'm one of her followers! Very sweet girl, understands the importance of self-care very well."
He opened his mouth to say something, but no words came out for a bit.
"Mum" he began, drawing a deep breath and trying to control the quiver in his voice "Shira and I broke up two years ago, in sophomore year."
You'd know that if you knew anything.
"Huh? Oh! So you haven't had a girlfriend since?"
"No." he mumbled back, realising it wasn't worth it to explain anything to her. If his mom didn't care enough to know everything that had happened in his life in two years, then he didn't care enough to tell her either.
Ben had always thought the fault was in him. After all, he was richer than most kids in his class, he knew that - he had everything. And yet he felt unhappy. He felt unhappy despite having everything, hence he must be ungrateful.
But he had come to understand he was anything but ungrateful. His dad was the one who was always busy, but he had tried - he had become a better parent. He had been there for Ben. He had showed up.
His mother had chosen not to, and it certainly wasn't his fault. Mothers didn't behave like that - he had met Nalini Vishwakumar. He had to fight the urge to yell some sense into Devi every time she said she hated her mom.
She's ungrateful. I'm not.
This realisation had made him colder towards his mother. He realised it, but was even more hurt by the fact that she didn't notice this at all.
"Well, what did you end up doing with the kittens anyways?"
"The shelter didn't have space for them, so I brought them home. They're in my bedroom. I'll keep them until Dad finds a spot for them." he said.
The silence that followed made him look up from his plate, to find his mother staring back at him with disgust.
"You let stray animals into my house?"
"Stray - what? But you just said it was a nice thing to rescue them!"
"It is! For somebody else! If you wanted a cat we could get you whichever you liked from a breeder!"
"I don't want them! They had been left in the parking lot! They would've died there!"
"They could be diseased, you know."
"They're not. I had them checked and vaccinated at the shelter. There's a veterinary clinic right beside it."
"Still, Ben, get rid of them right away. There will be no random abandoned strays in my house."
Bold words, calling it your house, when you're never in it yourself.
She left the dining room in a huff, mumbling exasperatedly to herself.
Left alone, Ben made a decision. Sure, it was driven by hurt and anger, but he would do it anyways. She hadn't come to his graduation, had she? She hadn't listened to him. Why should he listen to her?
For the first time in his life, Ben Gross was going to disobey his parents. He was going to keep those damn cats.
----------------------------------
Ben woke up the next morning to the sounds of two kittens rolling around and yawning in a box, and realised he was a bit conflicted - taking care of a whole live animal was no joke, especially since he couldn't ask for help from Patty and his dad.
Hiding them from mom isn't really a problem.
The thought of his mother brought back some of the rage he had felt the night before.
He was keeping those kittens, for sure, but for now, he didn't know where to start.
After an hour of research, Ben had a list and a day full of errands to run.
------------------------------------
Why are there so many litter box varieties in this world?
Ben had never known such confusion in his entire life. He was the class valedictorian, had won multiple awards and first place prizes, had gotten into a freaking ivy league, and yet had never faced something so difficult.
In front of him were five tub-like containers - each of a different colour, shape and size. One of them had a transparent lid, another one had a coloured lid, one of them had all these little knobs and buttons on the side, another one had a tag that said 'CAUTION : Be careful of electric wires'
He had angrily told the salesman to leave him alone after the idiot had attempted to sell him seeds for a parakeet, and now he had no one to ask for help.
Or maybe not.
He whipped out his phone and dialled a number.
-----------------------
Ben was regretting his choice.
Paxton had been standing beside him for the past five minutes, brow furrowed and completely silent.
Ben had suddenly realised that he did, indeed, have friends, friends he could ask for help. Only, his friend seemed even more lost and confused than he was.
"I- Wait, does that one say be careful of wires? I thought litter boxes didn't need electricity!"
"So did I! That's why I called you for help!"
"Me? What would I know about this? I've never had a pet!"
"But then why did you agree to help me?"
"Dude, I thought the box was too heavy for you to carry!"
"What's too heavy to carry?"
Trent had showed up out of nowhere, but Ben was somewhat used to him appearing out of thin air.
"Nothing. We can't figure out what to do here, which one of these litter boxes should I buy?
Trent looked at him with confusion. "Bro, you know these are for, like, cats, right? You can't use them."
Ben closed his eyes while Paxton held in a laugh.
"Yes, Trent, I know. I have two kittens at home. This is for them."
"Oh!" Trent said, rolling up his sleeves "Well, none of this fancy shit. What you need is a smart, durable, and simple solution" Spinning around, he called out - "Yo, does anyone here know where the Paw-fect range is?"
A girl in an apron appeared in the aisle, gesturing at them to follow her. She lead them to a different part of the store - a section that seemed entirely dedicated to the company Paw-fect.
An hour later, they were walking out to Ben's car with three large shopping bags.
"Dude, how do you know all this stuff? I mean, you basically told us what varieties of cats there are based on hair length. Where did you find that out?" Paxton asked Trent, not being able to place when precisely Trent had become an expert on cats.
"I spend a lot of time watching commercials on youtube, bro. I know exactly how to look after bunnies and dogs too."
Ben smiled to himself, getting inside the car. He rolled down the window and bid his friends goodbye before driving off towards home.
-------------------------------
A month had passed since that fateful day when he discovered his two beloved pets in that parking lot. Now, a month into the summer, he felt he had become somewhat of an expert cat dad. Well, enough of an expert to be worthy of a 'Best Cat Dad in the World' mug, the purchase and use of which had earned him some inquisitve glances from his father, but no questions.
He had hidden the kittens away inside his room, making sure to keep it locked at all times.
So far he was managing spectacularly. He had told Patty that he would clean his own room from now on, in preparation for college, and she had not discovered the kittens yet. To his dad he had said that the same shelter they had visited on graduation day had found an empty spot and accepted them.
He had developed a routine - everyday when Patty went out for grocery shopping, he would empty the litter boxes, fill up water and cat feed in the dispensers and brush their fur. He had installed a lock on his door, and made sure to leave it locked whenever he went out.
So far, so good. Nobody knew - not his dad, not Patty, and definitely not his mom, who had only been in the house for two days in the entire span.
The doorbell rang, telling him that Paxton and Trent had arrived to meet the cats.
"Oh, welcome! Ben is upstairs!" he heard Patty tell them.
Footsteps got louder and louder till Trent finally burst through his door.
"Where are they? Where are my nieces?"
"Trent, dude, not so loud man!" Ben warned, but he couldn't stop the smile from coming onto his face.
When he had found them, the two kittens had been on the verge of death. Thin and sickly, with dull fur, they barely had any energy at all, and would stay lying around and yawning all day long. Now, Ben had nursed them back to health, and they were happily climbing up their scratching post.
The only complaint he had was how aloof they stayed all the time. They made absolutely no efforts to return his affection and made no effort to get close to him, and bolted any time he tried to pet them.
He would call them ungrateful, but they weren't humans after all. Perhaps this was just how cats behaved.
"So, what are their names?"
Ben looked at Paxton for a moment before realising - he hadn't named them yet.
"You haven't thought of names yet, have you?"
"Uh, no."
"We'll help."
They both sat down on his bed and began gazing at the cats carefully.
This went on for some time. Just before Ben was about to interrupt, Trent finally spoke up.
"The white one is Taylor and the ginger one is Sadie."
On recieving confused looks, he explained further "She reminds me of Taylor Swift and she reminds me of Sadie Sink. Name your kids after great people and they shall become great themselves."
Before Ben could say anything in reply, the cats noticed that they had visitors in the room and bounded towards Trent. Jumping onto him, they began licking his face.
"Hey! They like the names!"
"Well," Ben said, smiling "Taylor and Sadie it is."
The very next morning they had little silver collars with Taylor and Sadie engraved on them, hanging around their necks.
--------------------------------------
Ben stood as if ready to tackle, glaring at the white kitten. Taylor glared back - no one would make her take a bath if she did not want to take a bath.
A moment more of glaring, and Ben jumped onto her. Taylor let out a yowl and shot off towards the bed.
"Come back here, you little rascal! Don't get my bed all muddy!"
But Taylor refused to listen. Jumping on the bed, she left her muddy footprints all over the white sheets.
Ben had accidently left the window cracked open the previous day, and the more mischiveous one of his cats had taken the opportunity to escape out into the rain-filled muddy backyard. Ben had been trying to get her to take a bath in his tub ever since, but getting a cat near water was proving to be more difficult than imagined.
"You were fine with soaking around in the rain yesterday - what's the problem with my tub? It's still water!" he exclaimed as she attempted to run away from between his legs.
She was not succesful, however, for in that second Ben bent over and caught her.
She growled again as he held up her little kicking and squirming frame in victory.
That very moment, the door opened, revealing Patty on the other side.
Ben gulped - he had forgotten to lock the door.
"I can explain-" he began, but he was cut short.
"Oh little prince, did you really think you could keep a cat in this house for two whole months without telling me? Who do you think kept them clean this whole time? Come one, hand them over, I will give them both a bath."
Shocked, Ben handed Taylor over to her.
"Does-does Dad know?"
"Of course! He really liked your 'Best Cat Dad Ever' mug."
As Patty took the kittens away, Ben smiled to himself. So his dad did know him well enough to know his secrets after all.
-----------------------------------------
The news had put a damper in an otherwise splendid morning.
Ben had grown out of wanting his mother to return home. Now, he didn't feel anything but frustration when she was around, didn't wish for anything but for her to leave. It was better when she was away.
But that morning Patty had told him that she would be returning home for a whole week.
Way to ruin a boy's day.
He was shuffling about his room, reluctantly trying to find his jacket so he could go out and buy something nice for his mother.
Ever since the reveal that both Patty and his father were well aware of his pets, Ben had let them run free in the house. The very first day the two had run across the hall while he was they were eating breakfast, and his father had simply smiled in response.
Now he headed downstairs, calling out to them, but neither of them appeared.
Shrugging it off, he left for the grocery store. A box of chocolates would do nicely, he thought.
------------------------
Ben returned home to chaos.
His mother was apprently screaming at someone in the living room.
As he got closer, he could make out the words more clearly.
"How could you let those...those creatures stay in our house Howard? He picked them off the street!"
Of course, the very first thing she did after returning home was berating his pets. Anger bubbled up inside him, but he pushed it back down and entered the room smiling. His father was sitting on the couch, massaging his temples, while Vivian stood in front of him.
"Mom, you're back! I got you chocolates." he said, trying his best to fake happiness, holding out the box.
His mom didn't take it, and instead crossed her arms and glared at him.
"Ben, I told you to get rid of those cats."
"You did."
"But you didn't listen to me! They were in my house! I went to the fridge to get myself water and I found them rolling around on the kitchen floor!"
Ben paused for a moment.
"I wanted to keep them."
"I don't care! I told you to get rid of them! You have to listen to me, I AM YOUR MOTHER!"
Well, it's not like you ever behave like a mother.
"What did you just say?"
Did I say that out loud?
"What did you just say, you ungrateful brat?"
That was what did it. Something inside Ben's chest shattered into pieces. His eyes filled up with tears as he stared straight at his mother, having waited far too long to say what he needed to be said.
"I SAID, you never behave like a mother! You didn't show up to your only son's graduation ceremony, you didn't know that I got admitted into a ivy league, hell , you didn't even know who my girlfriend was! THAT IS NOT HOW MOTHERS BEHAVE! If only you actually had time left for me after all your retreats and spas and treatments, maybe you would realise you know nothing about me!"
Ben did not wait to find out her reaction. He did not turn around to face his dad who was calling his name. He did not look at Patty. He simply bolted up the stairs to his own room.
Locking the door, he jumped onto his bed with shoes still on, and buried himself under the covers. Trying his best to not let the tears fall, he tried to call his cats.
"Taylor? Sadie? Are you there? Taylor?"
Not one peep. They weren't here either.
For the first time in a long time, Ben felt absolutely alone. He had his dad, he had his friends, but he had never had a mom. She was right there, down the stairs, the woman who had given birth to him, but he had never had a mom. And for whatever reason, that was enough to make him feel the way he did.
He lay quietly for some time, not letting a single tear or a single sound escape. He refused to cry.
Suddenly, he felt something weighing down the bed beside him.
Taylor and Sadie both made their way underneath the blanket, finally lying down right beside Ben.
He turned to his side and tried to pat Taylor's fur. He gently touched her with his hand, afraid that she would run away any moment.
But she didn't. Instead, she let out a content purr and curled up into an even smaller ball of fur.
They were here. They were here with him.
He could not hold back the tears any more. But even through the sobs, he began to smile.
------------------------------------
"Take good care of them Patty!" Ben called to his housekeeper as he hugged both of his cats one last time.
"I'll be back for Thanksgiving and Christmas, alright?"
He finally got up to leave when Patty began hounding him about being late to the airport.
He got into the passenger seat beside his dad.
His mom hadn't spoken to him since his outburst that day. He had tried to get a hold of her, but had always come out empty handed.
Still, having let all of it out had left him feeling lighter than ever. This time, he noticed, he didn't really care about his mother's absence.
"I left all the instructions for food and water on a checklist on my desk. Vet visits every month, and -"
"Ben, relax, we got this. You're going to college, be excited."
Ben smiled and looked out the window one last time as the car started, at the two little fur balls that he had come across by accident, who had ended up claiming rather large pieces of his heart.
What's more, they had ended up healing large parts of it as well.
"Yeah, I'm so excited." he said, looking at the road ahead.
------------------------
Author's Note : I am so sorry for being SO LATE, but I have an excuse - I kept deleting and re-writing over and over again because this is the first time I'm showing something I've written to someone else. I'll be doing the other two prompts over the next two days as well.
Well, this ended up being sappier than I had thought earlier! Anyways, I always appreciate constructive criticism, but please be kind.
Thank you for reading!

2023.06.02 21:06 monotious How do I make double click on title bar for MS Word maximize the window to full screen?

This question implicates both MacOS and Word, since the behaviour that I am having issue with doesn't seem to be the MacOS default behaviour, but then it certainly isn't Windows default behaviour either, so I don't know if it's Apple or Microsoft that's at "fault" here. But judgments aside, I think this is the best place to ask this question.
When I double click on an empty spot on the title bar for Word application window, it expands to fit the width of the document at the current zoom level. In other words, unless the zoom level of the document that I am working on is such that its width is at or larger than the width of my display, the window expands only up to the width of the document at the given zoom level. I then need to either manually drag the edges of the window to fully maximize it to the whole display, or increase the zoom level of the document and double click the title bar again.
I don't like this behaviour because a lot of times I want to maximize my Word window to the whole display even when the zoom level of the document is lower, since I find it useful to to have the margins created thereby. Also, some buttons in the top ribbon get combined when the Word application window is not fully maximized to the whole display, which is inconvenient.
And no, the green full screen button is no the solution because I don't want to go into the full screen mode. I still want relatively each access to other open windows.
I am not sure if I've been this type of behaviour with any other MacOS applications, but this certainly isn't the kind of behaviour that Microsoft would think of making its programs do, because Windows doesn't have this type of stuff in the first place - on Windows, double click on title bar always maximizes window to the full screen, with any application.
Does anyone who use MS Office on their Mac know if there is a way to change this?

Old Intro

Old footage of the Grabatron opening, before the 5 UFOs update
I remember a sequence from all the way back when I first played this game. This was before 4 new ships were added to the game too. What it was was some mini-movie that first showed some prophecy and info about the aliens. The one thing I remember was:
"Now thousands of years later, it has returned"
"And this time, it's EVIL"
We then cut to a shot of Earth from outer space, which shows the planet and its moon. Then suddenly, a portal opens up and the mothership emerges from the portal (As shown in the picture above) and approaches Earth. Once it enters the atmosphere, it sends in the scout UFO zooming by. We later see the Scout UFO's signature claw as it heads to a town to destroy it. After that, the sequence ends with "Grabatron". I can't be the only one that remembers that old sequence.
Nowadays, I play the game through bluestacks, though even with lucky patcher, I can't get the missile launcher transaction to go free.

2023.06.02 20:57 Simon_Drake Travelling through the fourth dimension as a form of magic

It's a common concept to consider fourth dimensions of space with a comparison to a 2-dimensional being that is shocked and amazed at our ability to travel through a mysterious 'third' dimension that they can't perceive. Flatland is the classic reference material. Just as moving through a third dimension is magical to a 2-dimensional being, a creature with access to a 4th spacial dimension would seem like magic to us.
So from the perspective of a 3-dimensional being, what magic powers would a being with access to a 4th spacial dimension have?
  1. Circumvent (seemingly) impassable barriers
  2. Travel across (seemingly) vast distances almost instantaneously
  3. (Seemingly) vanish from sight and touch like a ghost
  4. Move/retrieve objects to/from (seemingly) thin-air
  5. Seeing things that should be impossible to see like internal organs
However, I think these abilities would be depend on the context and the location, not things you could use wherever and whenever you want. I don't want to labour the metaphor too much because it's been repeated so many times but imagine an ant on a sheet of paper being blocked by a wall of ant-poison granules, then imagine a grasshopper alongside the ant that can jump over the impassable barrier. But now imagine the ant and grasshopper are trapped under a glass bowl by some naughty child. "Mr Grasshopper, there is an impassable barrier of glass just like the impassable barrier of poison, why don't you use your mighty legs to jump over the barrier as you did before?". The two situations aren't the same, the grasshopper obviously can't just jump over the glass wall because it's a full dome enclosing them, but the ant doesn't know that.
Or imagine an ant on a coiled garden hose. Two points on the coil of hose are very far apart for the ant but a short distance for the grasshopper that can pass between loops. Now the ant crawls along a long straight portion of the hose laid out along the garden path and finds a blob of ice cream that happened to fall on the hose. "Mr Grasshopper, use your ability to pass between distant parts of the hose to go tell the other ants what I have found!". Except it can't. The grasshopper can pass between loops when the hose is coiled up but the ant has no idea that the region he's on is free from coils and the same trick won't work.
So lets imagine a 4th Dimensional Aware Mage and a regular 3D person in a prison cell. Can the 4D person escape the sealed prison cell? It depends on what the landscape looks like in the fourth dimension. Maybe the walls are passable in the fourth dimension but maybe they're not. Maybe Northtown and Farlandia are near each other if you could step through the fourth dimension but maybe they're still really far apart and fourth dimensional travel doesn't help you.
I think this applies to all the 4D powers listed above. A fly could avoid a ground-based hazard by flying but certain hazards like fire would continue into the 3rd dimension and still hurt it. A guard comes to check the prison cell and the 4D mage vanishes (from a 3D perspective), the guard smiles and draws out a tazer. He shoots the tazer through the empty space where the 4D mage was and the barbs dig into the wall behind him. Then he activates the electric current of the tazer and the 4D mage reappears exactly where he was before but now he's being electrocuted. He didn't really vanish, he can't really leave the cell.
BUT the exact same circumstances in a different prison cell could have gone differently. If this cell had been full of regular criminals and they were locked in the East Wing, then these cells are different and you CAN escape by going around the walls in the 4th Dimension.
Which is kinda narratively unsatisfying. The audience will have a 3D perspective and even knowing that 4D capabilities are possible we won't know which 4D capabilities will be available in any given situation. That makes the powers almost a Deus Ex Machina or an unsatisfying cop-out, like how many Star Trek episodes there "electromagnetic interference in the upper ionosphere" preventing them using the transporters to resolve the plot. The characters can or cannot use their powers based entirely on the whims of the writer to contrive a situation is one direction or the other, and audiences will have no way to predict it. The heroes are threatened with a special 4D-gun and locked in a prison cell. Can they escape effortlessly when the guard's back is turned? Are they trapped and will need to wait for rescue? There's no way to know. Is there narrative tension or are our heroes just pretending to be trapped? Flip a coin and wait to see if they Deus Ex Machina powers let them escape effortlessly.
The powers are so powerful I feel they'd be deliberately hobbled in most situations to create tension. Like the "ionosphere is blocking the transporters" trope. The Star Trek writers have even said they kinda regret the invention of the transporters and replicators because they undermine most narrative issues, you can't have famine or scarcity in a world with replicators unless you handwave "oh this planet has rocks that like block the energy of the replicators or something". So yeah, 4D powers are kinda tough.

2023.06.02 20:57 GivingHelper MIL living situation complications

So I haven't ever come on here before but I need advice.
My (58) MIL's second husband is a nice man to us. But she has told me about his anger and some of the things she described to me were abusive. She doesn't have much and neither does he. She expressed to me how much she felt trapped.
(Backstory in a nutshell: MIL has always been dramatic and a source of stress. Her other children have either left the state, no longer speak to her, or have even left the country altogether. When I married into this family I knew it might be challenging. She's got a big heart, but an abusive background that causes her to have pretty extreme reactions at times. Over the years, I've become better at keeping up my energetic boundaries so she doesn't hurt me. She has a tendency to see the worst in situations and get bogged down in self-pity and blame. I have had the tendency to take on her emotional baggage in the past when she'd fling it my way but I've learned how to shield it now. I have 5 children though who don't have that skill.)
Now, after the abusive tendencies came forward and the issues became clear to me, I told my MIL I didn't want her to feel trapped. We currently have a 3-level house and I told her we would make it work if she had to go somewhere to get away. (She threatened to leave many times over ten years and didn't until now.
8 months ago, I moved two sons out of their bedroom so she could live in our basement until she could find a job in the area and move into her own place. (Problem is she hasn't ever really been able to keep a job long-term. She tries to get disability, etc. etc.) The economy has not been helpful, of course. She got a part-time job and lost it and has got another part-time job. She has some health issues and things that prevent her from working longer hours...and yeah. It's complicated.
Anyway, the stress level in our home is definitely harder with her here. She tries her best to stay out of things but she sorta has control issues and has to share our kitchen. She makes little things into arguments (like putting dishes in the sink instead of on the counters or how often my kids can snack). She has fits sometimes about food that my kids eat. I tell her to keep any food she needs to stay precious in her own space downstairs (she has a small fridge and a whole pantry down there.) But it's just hard and she will still have blow-ups over these things, and then feel ashamed and terrified that I'll kick her out. (I could use the buzzword of manipulation but she would be so offended.)
The biggest thing? Her (ex?) comes here to stay with her. She goes down there on weekends. From the very beginning, she's kept in contact and told people she's only temporarily separated. He's supposedly selling his property and getting another property nearby but it's not a liveable property (no water or power) and he doesn't have any money to build. Most likely he'll end up in a camper or something. She says she plans to get her own apartment whether or not he sticks around...but I don't know how or when that would be possible on her income. She wants a second job or something...
I've gotten myself into a pickle.
I don't want to live with my MIL forever. The household is stressed. Yet I do appreciate the help she gives us when she can. She's extremely busy all the time. I've thought about looking for another property and moving my entire family just so we could maybe get a MIL apartment attachment so she really has her own space. But I don't know if it's possible to do that.
I feel as though she's used living with us as a tool to give her ex an incentive to do what she wants him to do. And yet he is still not really treating her much better. I honestly think he needs treatment for health issues that could be affecting his mental health and causing some of these problems...then again so might she. In any case, it's not really my business what she does in her relationship. But I sort of made it my business by opening my home to her.
I don't know what to do next. Does anyone else have similar experiences or advice or something? Any light at the end of this tunnel?

2023.06.02 20:57 Humble-Artichoke1841 Visually Pleasing Cycle Recap: 3.4/172 Splitter

I only applied to schools I would be excited about attending. Obviously I was hoping for at least one T14 acceptance, but at least I shot my shot and don't have a difficult decision lol!

I sent in all applications in the beginning of December. I would have liked to have applied earlier; that's probably the one thing I would do differently if I were to do it again.
Other miscellany:

2023.06.02 20:55 Figmania Fig Varieties by their Taste Groupings

Choosing Fig Varieties......by their taste (flavor)

By Dan
Semper Fi-cus
📷Hmmmmm!! Which one should I choose?? Figs come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. There are large ones and small ones. Round ones and flat ones. Some have long necks while some have no neck at all. Some are pear shaped and others are very elongated in shape. Colors can be green, yellow, brown, red, purple, and black. Some even will have two colors and these colors can exist as color vertical bands or stripes. The Panachee is a beautiful yellow fig which has vertical striped bands of green. The fig's pulp color can range from clear, cream, amber, gold, pink, red, and purple. Taste too can vary quite a bit from cultivar to cultivar. So how does one go about choosing a fig based on flavor??
Well, my taste buds tell me that there are a just a few broad groupings that are based on their "TASTE" or their flavor alone. Keep in mind that any taste rating is very subjective and a personal thing. Given that qualifier, here is what my tongue tells me are similar tasting fig varieties. The better figs in each group will have a richer and more complex flavor. A rich flavor will linger on your tongue for several minutes after you eat it and provide maximum taste sensation. A complex flavor will remind you of several different flavors all playing in concert with each other....and teasing your taste buds. Not all figs will have both a rich and complex flavor. Some will have only a single flavor note....like most honey figs. The sugar to acid ratio of the fig pulp too plays a very big role in its overall taste sensation.
I have some of my figs listed in similar flavor groupings. They are in no particular order:
1) The Celeste types .....Celeste, LSU Improved Celeste, O'Rourke, Southern Brown Turkey, English Brown Turkey, Blue Bingo, Blue Celeste, Celestine, Texas Everbearing.
2) The Mission types.......Black Mission, Violette De Bordeaux, Native Black, LSU Scott's Black, Black Beauty 10, Negronne, Petite Aubique, Beer's Black, Maltese Falcon (GM#5), Rond de Bourdeaux, Hardy Chicago New, 2 Fat Lady Black
3) The Honey types......LSU Golden Celeste, Italian Honey, LSU Gold, Jack Lily, White Triana, Atreano, Florentine, Cajun Honey, Cajun Gold, China White, Flanders, Vernino/Pasquale Not, UCD 143-36, LSU Everbearing, Latarula
4) The Blackberry types.......Hardy Chicago, Sals, Sicilian Black, LSU Purple, Black Triana, Black Italian, Marseilles VS, Dark Portuguese, Gino's Black, Black Beauty 10, Dark Sicilian #11, St. Jerome, Quantico, Maltese Falcon (GM#5), Pastillier
5) The Adriatic types.......Smith, Dalmatie, Battaglia Green, Adriatic, JH Adriatc, Green Greek, Strawberry, Monstreuse, Late Green, Verte, Ischia White, Conadria, Lattarola ---------------------------------------------- IMO Everyone should have one from each taste grouping.
Black Beauty 10....is hands down the best tasting fig in my collection. It's taste is very complex and fits into multiple groupings. It will produce two crops in a zone 9 climate. It is a Persian fig which originated from the northern part of Iran. It is NOT the same fig as Kathleen Black. Persian figs are reputed to have better flavor than European or Mediterranean figs because of their different gene pool. I have two other Persian figs which are yellow in color. The yellow one from Northern Iran (not written about yet) is truly outstanding in flavor which leads me to believe that Persian figs are indeed better flavored than those cultivars that originated from Europe. Time will tell..........
Col de Dame is my second best tasting. Its taste is complex and fits into multiple groupings. My climate is long enough to ripen this fig to perfection. It needs a long hot climate. It can produce a light breba crop. Main crop figs ripen late in the season.
Bourjosotte Gris is third best based on taste alone.....it has a very strong and intense strawberry flavor. This fig tastes more Strawberry than a real strawberry. However, its productivity is still in question. Its taste is complex and fits into multiple groupings. It too is a late season fig producing only one crop.
Smith is often to die for good. It is a very well flavored, balanced, and rain tolerant fig. As more and more fig enthusiast around the country get to taste this truly outstanding fig....you will hear them raving about its flavor. It produces two crops in a zone 9 climate.
IMO....Violette De Bordeaux is a MUST HAVE fig as it tastes so good and does real well in most climates. It can produce two crops in a zone 9 climate.
-----------------------------
IMO, there are other factors that should go into cultivar selection besides "TASTE" (flavor) alone. Ripening times, number of crops, persistence, speed of ripening, productivity, rain tolerance, bug resistance, skin quality, sweetness, pulp consistency, heat tolerance, fruit drop, size of tree, cold hardiness, pot culture vs. in-ground culture, cooking qualities, etc. should also be taken into consideration when choosing a fig variety.
For taste and overall performance in the rainy areas in the South.....it is still hard to beat the Louisiana heirloom Celeste fig that I found several summers ago. I was in fig heaven for over an hour as I ate a ton of figs from that particular mother tree. That fig can be seen in the above picture and listed as Celeste LF. Celeste figs can be to die for good. That is why Celeste still remains the Queen Fig of the South....even though it is usually a one crop fig. -------------------------------------------------
Added the following on June 27, 2012
Here are a few current pictures of my old time Celeste LF stain. This one is not an LSU hybrid fig like the LSU Improved Celeste. IMO, this is THE BEST regular Celeste fig strain to be found in Louisiana and likely the nation.......no, let's make that the best in the world!! lol...... This is the one that I have been searching to find for years. My conclusion is based on lots of research on lots of Celeste fig trees. Its taste is absolutely superb (a perfect 10), does not drop its figs, and does not split. This one will dry on the tree into a raisin if you let it. Its taste gets rather complex as the interior pulp turns into a very rich and jam-like sweet treat. I am exceedingly happy to have found this particular strain. I put a lot of miles on my truck during my hunts to find this fig. You can read more about it in another future post on my Fig Blog..............

2023.06.02 20:54 Glass_Pop7839 Living in an Electric Camper Van in Plano

So I might accept a job offer in Plano for a major food company and I am considering living in my 2022 Ford E-Transit and basically living in parking lots and showering at Anytime Fitness everyday.
I'm trying to build a network of parking lots I can live out of (sometimes police might ask me to leave so I need backup locations)
Does anyone have any advice on this idea or sugfested locations? Would anyone be interested in me sleeping in their driveway part-time if needed?
About Me: -31 yo male, Asexual -Very progressive and passionate about the enviorment (one of the reasons I want to try this admittedly ridiculous idea) -Love movies, boardgames, working out, foodie, playing dead by daylight -More than happy to help out with chores or use my cargo van to help move stuff
Any advice on potential camping locations or RV parks would be greatly appreciated!

2023.06.02 20:54 Emergency-Insect-141 I asked my fiancé for a new ring and I think I've fallen in love all over again

So this is going to be super sappy but here we are.
I proposed to my fiance about a year ago and a few months later he proposed back to me with a ring that definitely fit the descriptions I had given him in terms of looks, however something about it just didn't feel right and for the longest time I couldn't tell him due to the anxiety that he might be mad with me, especially since it ended up being way past it's due when it came to returning the original one he gave me.
I've recently started therapy which opened my eyes to taking care of the things in my life that stress me out, and so I broke down one day and told him I didn't like the ring because I felt that the thinner band on it made my hand look rather big, in a bad way and it made me feel insecure. Of course he was upset, but also very understanding. He told me that on the website it had seemed bigger and when it arrived he had worried I wouldn't like it. Knowing how much he spent on it I thought it ridiculous to ask for a new one in that proce range, and I even offered to buy myself a new one because I felt ashamed that I couldn't tell him before it was too late.
He told me he would love to do it if it would make me happy, and so I sat down and started searching and eventually I found the perfect ring . I shared it with him, it was cheaper and definitely more me (we both agreed) and so he said he'd look more into it.
And today while we were having a picnic at the park, and was talking about our roleplay characters and their silly little romance through a bunch of time traveling shenanigans, he entered a little monologue from his character.
"No matter what happens, when or where we are, past, present or future, I'll always be with you"
And after that he proposed to me a second time. And I think I just finally actually entered the "I just got engaged" jitters, because I swear the first time I got so nervous and barely took it in, but this time it just felt as though everything had fallen into place.
I couldn't be happier to build my story with be with my favorite storyteller <3<3<3
