Pois bem, hoje me deram a noticia que eu teria minhas ferias sim. 1 semana de férias. 1 fucking semana.

2023.06.02 21:49 RetireEarlyNZ First-time NZ travelers to NYC?

Planning to take my wife to NYC this early December and was hoping to get some info on things to do or avoid (tourist traps) as we will only be there for 4 days then taking Acela to Boston.
Arriving in JFK and taking the AirTrain to Jamaica then LIRR to Penn as we are staying at W 35th.
No specific itinerary yet as we have just started planning. We are the type who don't want to cram too much in a day but just go on a leisurely pace.
I know I can google a lot of these things but was hoping to get some insider info from the locals as that is what we normally do when visiting a place for the first time.
Any tips on food places nearby e.g. pizza/pasta? Don't mind hole-in-the-wall places as we actually prefer them. Even food carts work for us.

2023.06.02 21:48 ArthurPele Eu transo mal?

2023.06.02 21:48 Carlier450 Lexus LS400 Power Steering Leak

Lexus LS400 Power Steering Leak
Not sure if anyone has ever heard of the notorious power steering leaks that LS400's get, but my leak seems to be a simple fix. Typically they leak from the pump, rack, idle/up air control valve or the high pressure hose, but not mine. My car is leaking from the return line that runs in front of my radiator and AC condenser where the hard steel line connects to a typical rubber hose. The connection has leaked for so long before I bought the car that it completely covered the AC condenser, radiator, and everything under the front of the car. My question is, since the part I need is no longer available anywhere besides used ones on eBay, would it be an issue to replace the steel line with just some 3/8 O.D. copper line and replace the hoses to fit? The original size is 10mm steel line and hoses to match, but finding 10mm copper line and 10mm rubber hoses is harder than just running to the hardware store and rigging it up. I've seen posts from other LS400 owners with the same leak using copper line and thats where I got the idea from. Haven't found much about whether that's sufficient enough to handle the fluid temps and what not, but it seems like it would work fine. I've also thought about snipping off the rusted portion and getting a longer hose but any advice would be awesome. Attached is some pics to see what I'm talking about (don't mind the green fluid, manifold gauge I rented from O'Reilly's had a leaky hose and shot out PAG oil and freon while recharging)

2023.06.02 21:46 716crl [NY] Reference Check for Federal Employment

Please help! I recently let my current employer know that I am moving closer to family and therefor, looking for another job. I have interviewed with the Department of Veterans Affairs and they are conducting a reference check. I listed my current supervisor as a reference since she was made aware I was looking. They sent her form "omb approved no 2900-0117" to complete (I can't figure out how to attach this - please google and it is the3rd link down). She sent me this e-mail...
"While you know I don’t have anything negative to say at all, my HR rule of thumb says I can’t provide a reference with the level of detail they are asking for– especially on paper. Its 2 pages including performance rating etc. Best practice is to just provide dates, compensation etc and maybe indicate ‘eligibility for rehire’."
While I know that it might not typically be information that employers provide, I can't find any NYS laws against providing this information and the first page of the form says that Title 5 of the US Code grants the VA authority to ask for this information. Does anyone have experience with federal reference checks specifically? Does Federal Law say somewhere that employers are able to provide this information without repercussion? Thanks so much for your help!!

2023.06.02 21:46 lisbon_guy Fim do capítulo 3

2023.06.02 21:46 McGlone_Games 'In Vision' Commentary Notes - Behind Bars

'In Vision' Commentary Notes - Behind Bars
We've been gambling, had a nip-and-tuck, and now we're headed 'Behind Bars' for another 'In Vision' commentary recap. This is actually the fifth episode in 'The Strange and the Dangerous' box-set, but it's also my least favourite commentary and I wanted to get it out the way, so I've made it the third recap. I will warn readers in advance that this does touch on some unpleasant topics related to prisons.

\"...\"

For this one Louis is joined by Paul Taylor, a former prisoner and a notable figure involved with the 'Strangeways Prison' riot of 1990, where a confrontation in the prison chapel sparked a riot that lasted for 25 days. The riot is credited as being a significant factor in the British prison system receiving an overhaul, which made it far more humane towards the inmates. You can read more about what happened during, and after, the riot here and here.
This is unquestionably the most awkward 'In Vision' commentary. There's almost no rapport between Louis and Paul, and Paul has almost nothing to say about what happens in the episode. Paul mainly sticks to just answering Louis' questions, or promoting his ideas for how prisoners should be treated.

  • Paul lists the many prisons he has been incarcerated in, and states that he spent 16 years and 9 months of his life behind bars
  • Paul says that "The Hole" would be referred to as "The Punishment Block" or "Segregation Unit" in the UK, and he was sent there for "rebellious conduct" towards the guards, and inciting other prisoners
  • Paul had "gassed" (thrown urine onto) guards when he heard them being "a bit awkward" with a fellow prisoner, then admits he also did it to see if they would move him to a different prison (all it did was add 28 more days to his sentence)
  • Before choosing San Quentin, Louis and the crew had approached over 30 prisons, narrowed the number down to 5, and then the Director and an Assistant Producer visited each one
  • Paul doesn't think the concept of "gangs" exists in British prisons, but admits that a group of prisoners may attack other inmates who have grassed on them (the British equivalent of "snitches get stitches")
  • Paul has, unsurprisingly, never heard of the American term "Buck Rogers time" for when an inmate has an extremely long sentence
  • When Paul started out in prison, his "toilet" was a bucket
  • Louis notes that most inmates at San Quentin are there "in transit", and only stay until they are assigned somewhere else to serve their full sentence, which is why there is so much over-crowding and so little for the prisoners to do
  • Paul notes that the American prison system does not appear to allow for "humanitarian or civilised conduct" by the prisoners, which likely encourages non-compliance and an anti-authority mindset
  • At the time of filming, San Quentin had not been executing anyone on death row, due to a legal case over whether the lethal injection was unconstitutional
  • Paul says he never had a discussion with fellow prisoners about the death penalty (the death penalty had not been used in the UK since 1964, yet was only officially banned in 1998)
  • Paul claims that there is not much racism in British prisons, except for during the 1970s when many prison officers were members of the far-right National Front party
  • Paul recites a short poem he wrote to Louis, and Louis awkwardly nods his head at him several times
  • Paul gets a "WTF is this?" look on his face when he sees transwoman Deborah and her boyfriend, and says he never saw relationships like that in British prisons
  • Louis notes that they met several other trans inmates, and they were a "significant feature" of San Quentin, though only Deborah was included in the episode
  • Louis says Deborah was a heroin addict, which was one reason why she kept being imprisoned (she later died of a drug overdose)
  • Louis asks Paul what makes someone a criminal, and Paul relates how he grew up in care homes after his parents became unable to look after him, committed crimes to escape from the abuse he suffered, and then continued to commit crimes with the people he escaped with to get by
  • Louis says the alarm would sound in the prison around "3 or 4 times a day" while they were there
  • Paul had met some prisoners who were "exceptionally damaged", such as a Nazi who had shot multiple people with a crossbow (but was still allowed to watch videos on Nazi Germany while he was incarcerated)
  • Louis says there were two places in San Quentin they never filmed: Death Row ("the leading cause of death on Death Row is, actually, old age"), and "The Adjustment Centre" that was full of the most "recalcitrant" prisoners who were "locked-down, absolutely"
  • Paul thinks there is less "machismo" in the British penal system, and that there is less picking-on of other prisoners, because Brits don't like bullies
  • Louis points out how the guards are careful not to use the word "friend" when describing their relationship with an inmate
  • Louis clearly tries to bait Paul into talking about how sex offenders can hide behind religion, and Paul is having none of it
  • Louis mentions that "leave him alone, he's religious" was a common reason for an inmate not to be harassed
  • Louis wasn't that worried when the prisoners in the yard started threatening them, as he didn't think he would be worth beating up
  • Louis, again, clunkily tries to get the uncomfortable-looking man, who previously mentioned being abused in a care home, to talk about child-molesters
  • Paul does reveal that the crimes of Ian Brady and Myra Hindley had made many of the Manchester inmates at Strangeways hold "bitterness and resentment" towards sex offenders, and anyone else whose crimes targeted the innocent or vulnerable, so they took the opportunity to attack specific prisoners when the riot started
  • Paul also talks about how there were three on-site pharmacies at Strangeways, and the prisoners who raided them got so loaded on drugs that they had to get carried out on stretchers
  • Louis regrets joking to gay inmate Chris about how a gay man should be happy being locked up with hundreds of other men, and he later says Chris had been moved to San Quentin after being gang-raped in another prison
  • Paul's "WTF is this?" look is back with a vengeance when Chris' ex-Nazi boyfriend Ronnie appears
  • Paul doesn't think your "average British criminal" could cope with the "cruel, brutal, and uncivilised" American prison system
  • Louis on Ronnie and Chris: "I found that quite odd."
  • Louis notes that Ronnie, while in a relationship with a gay man, did not consider himself to be gay
  • Paul was once put into "The Hole" after assaulting 3 prison officers, and was only allowed outside in a similar cage to the ones seen in the episode
  • Louis mentions how the various gangs would, in their own way, help run the prison and keep order, however Paul points out that they wouldn't need to help, if each ward had the same number of guards as a British prison
  • There is an interesting conversation about how Paul's original crimes were more about giving himself a better standard of living, and he is now happy with what he has in life
  • Louis wanted to follow Deborah after she left, but he and the crew decided that the "story" of the doc was life on the inside
  • Louis: "The issue of what goes on in the outside world is really beside the point, because, for these people, this is the universe they inhabit."
  • Louis compares his time at boarding school to being imprisoned at San Quentin
  • Paul implies that he made few friends during all his years in prison, though did try to be a "mentor" and encourage other inmates to follow his way of thinking
  • Louis, yet again, tries to goad Paul into talking about sex offenders, this time asking whether they were seen as "scum" by other inmates
  • Paul responds by saying that they were kept in separate wards anyway, and they still deserve to receive help with whatever disorders they may have
  • Paul disputes that there is any "class system" or "hierarchy" among British prisoners, and strongly disagrees that any British prisoner would be viewed positively if their crime was killing a police officer (he looks visibly shocked when Louis suggests that would be the case)
  • They awkwardly sit in silence for almost a minute
  • Louis: "And that is pretty much that."
  • Paul ends the commentary by expressing regret for how the riot affected the former governor of Strangeways prison, as he was trying to implement more humane changes at the time, but was allegedly facing resistance from the guards

2023.06.02 21:46 EagleHammer6 How the rules were enforced when I was in the Navy was wild.

Things woud be one way for a year. Everyone would go by a specific baseline. Then one day - things changed and some person wouldn't get the memo. So they would do things how htey had been done for a year. Then they would get gaslit and told things were never done that way.
I started to question myself so I kept a notepad in my pocket. I'd write down dates and exactly how something happened. Then when it was re told a few months later, I'd refer to my notes knowing they were full of crap and I was right.
Someone would do some minor thing and everyone would act like they killed a man. Like a guy left a receipt under his matress one day. They took that as "gear adrift" and destroyed his rack. This guy was one of the only people who worked or followed the rules 99% of the time. And that is how they treated him.
he once hadn't eat in 36 hours and was about to get his chance, but his watch relief relieved him ten minutes late knowing hte galley was closing simply because they wanted to miss 10 minutes of their watch knowing the guy hadn't eaten. The guy gets mad and everyone tell him to quit crying and doesn't say one thing to the late relief. But they had eviscerated him over a fucking receipt under his matress.
We would have battle station drills. I was maybe 4 months away from getting out with my honorable. The pipe patching team was all brand new people with no leader. That had no idea what to do. But the chain of command would send them into drills by themselves. Totally setting them up for failure and if a real event happened they'd maybe die.
One day I get irritated because it is the end of battle stations and they are sending these guys in alone. The person running hte drill and testing them knew what was happening. There was never any equipment left at the end, and I felt their lives were worth something... So I take charge of the team for the drill and I take them in and htey are just doing abysmal and won't listen to anything I say and the person running the drill is just giving me shit like - "You're supposed to be leading these guys, where are your boots, where is your hat, why don't they know this." And I am just thinking, this is what I get for trying to do the right thing. That stuff wasn't as important as educating and preparing them.
One battle stations my team had finished their drill and it is near the end of battle stations. A second class comes in and says, "Eagle, get an air tank and follow them!" There were no air tanks because it was the end of the drill. There was also no boots or hats. I know it is going o take me a minute to find some so I ask the group and the second class - where are the ygoing so I know? No one would acknowledge I was speaking.
I find a tank, hat, and boots, and I walk through a fir barrier the directio nthe group went. A Chief and First class are standing there gabbing. I ask, "Am I supposed to be on air? Where am I supposed to go, what team am I helping so I know what to do?" They wouldn't acknowledge I was speaking. I try to get a response for maybe 3 minutes. So I go through another fire barrier and just can't find anyone nad have no clue.
Suddenyl the Chief and First class come through the barrier and th first class is yelling at me, "Why the fuck aren't you on air? Chief, this idiot isn't on air!" And I am looking at him like are you kidding me???? And I say something mildly snarky and he loses it, "What the fuck is this guy's problem?" And the Chief said, "Oh, e jst has an attitude problem." And I am just standing there like, yeah that's it. Not the fact that I asked you for three minutes if I neede to be on air and never got a response.
----
People would try to enforce rules across the board like there was never any special cirumstances.
We'd paint te sides of the ship and we couldn't wear our gloves because they would stick together and get ruined. You couldn't work with the fingers all stuck together. Out hands would be numb and we'd be walking from the wuarterdeck to the berthing with our hands in our pockets wet and shivering live a dog. And someone would shout at us and tell us to, "Get our fucking hands out of our pockets." Because the rule was no walking with hand in in pockets.
I'd have watch as midnight, then go straight into sea and anchor, then wed have to clean everything up, dress the lones, bring in messenger lines, etc. I'd be walking through the hangar bay at half past noon with some stubble on my face. Some Chief would stop me and just yel at me for 15 minutes because I had stubble, "When was the last time you shaved?" And I'd tell them, when I got up this moninging - and before I could say I got up at midnight they'd just lay into me on how the rules state I have to shave everyday and blah blah. And I am just thinking, are we done - I have a mountain of work to do and if I'm lucky we'll get an hour of liberty before curfew - was I really supposed to excuse myself from mooring the ship to go and shave?...
We stood brdige watch and lookout watches. I got off watch at 3am one morning and I step into the hangar bay piss tired with my hat on. Underway you don't wear a cover. It's 3 am. Me and one other guy were theonly person in all three hangar bays. This guy is pointing at his head frantically like someone is going to die because I have my cover on at 3am on my way to my berthing where I'll get 3 hours of sleep.
It boiled down to no one having any empathy or thinking into things. No one stopped and thought - these people are barely sleeping, barely eating, getting abused physically and mentally... Maybe I should cut them a break.
One summer me an one other guy did a job by ourselves that was usually 12 people. We'd get 20 minutes for lunch. We had to go to this barge because were in a ship yard. I had to poop. So I poop and I had ten minutes left. i go to the galley to find something I can take with me. They had these individual ceral cups. I took one and this guy just loses it on me, "Hey! No taking food off the mess deck!" So I pretend to put it back and stick it in my coveralls. The guy sees me and I just bolt.
I literally ran to the lower level and into a head to scarf down dry cereral. The guy didn't even think - maybe this guy is just hungry and htis is his only meal today - he is covered in paint and carrying a life jacket - maybe I should let this one slide.

BBW cancelled my birthday reward lol
I finally figured out something to use my birthday reward on (free body care item up to $8.95 with purchase) on the very last day. Ordered online cause I just found in store overwhelming trying to find product that was under $8.95. Just got the email that only the free item was cancelled 😂 not mad, but I just find it kind of iconic BBW at this point so thought I'd share lol

2023.06.02 21:44 Tarnarmour Lindet is not a genius

Spoilers for Gods of Blood and Powder trilogy:
Just finished the last book, and I was consistently annoyed with how Lindet was treated. We are told over and over that "Lindet is frighteningly smart, she's a genius, she has plans for everything" but we see almost zero evidence of this.
  1. Lindet is head of a nation with a huge ethnic divide, and chooses to oppress and neglect the majority of her citizens because... why? If she's so smart, why didn't she realize that she could have had the support of the Palo instead of constantly fighting against them, just by not oppressing them?
  2. Lindet supposedly knows that the Dynize are going to invade to take the god stones, and yet she accomplishes no visible preparation. She doesn't forge alliances with the 9, she has insufficient guards in Landfall and needs to rely on the riflejacks, she almost forces the Mad Lancers to fight against her because she won't get rid of her psychopathic head of spies, and she relies on an unorganized paramilitary force (black hats) to rescue the Landfall godstone from clearly superior enemy forces.
  3. After putting herself in a position where only Vlora can realistically save her from the Dynize, she insists on calling for her arrest. It should be totally obvious that asking Vlora to turn herself in is pointless; likewise it makes no sense, when already on the back foot in the war against the Dynize, to try to defeat her seasoned troops in battle. Surely the smart thing to do would have been to trick Vlora into helping her, then sneakily take the godstones out from under her nose?
  4. She manages to get caught by a traitor general. Not sure if that's really her fault but it's funny to me that the only time we see her in book 2 is when she's helplessly captured. I guess the one good thing she does is giving Ben his armor back, but that's not really a point in her favor. A genius would have judged Ben's character and realized that he would rather fight the Dynize than her, and trusted him with supplies and more weapons much earlier.
  5. In the last book, the only thing we hear about her is that she has raised an army of conscripts and suffered multiple military defeats. Then at the very end she admits that being a despot was not the right choice. Whoop di do.
I just don't understand why we have to be told repeatedly that she's dangerously intelligent. Clearly, she's not. She has barely any impact on the story at all.
